Better Than Traction Control - Introducing The Quaife ATB Differential!

  • A 'Tom Tech Talk' - an insight and overview to the Quaife ATB Differential that we had commissioned over a decade ago to improve the traction of the V8 range of cars.
Traditionally Jaguars had limited slip differentials (LSDs) installed to assist with traction, but with the introduction of the V8 engine cars, Jaguar moved over a a traction control system and they dropped the original plate and clutch LSD.
Whilst there is some benefit to a traction control system, the lack of LSD meant the handling wasn't as good as it could be and the high performance supercharged 'R' versions of the XK8, XJ8 and S Type, simply didn't handle as well as some of their German rivals at the time.
Tom approached Quaife and helped develop their unique Automatic Torque Biasing differential to be suitable for a number of Jaguars, following high customer demand.
Since then, we have fitted a number of Quaife ATB diffs to a large number of X100 XK8/Rs, X300 XJ8s & XJRs, S Type Rs, X350 XJRs, and up to and including X150 XKs & XKRs (the 4.2 V8).
We hope you enjoy this quick video - please note, we will be using microphones in future videos to help with the sound quality.

best thing about a limited slip is being able to send power to the wheel with grip. enjoying your content so far keep up the good work

2:22 - I don't believe that's correct. Surely what a clutch pack limited slip diff does is divert more power to the wheel with the most grip and usually there is a 30/70 or 70/30 split. In the wet you won't get tyre marks but the rear of the car will fish tail from side to side as the diff hunts for grip, while the car goes forward in a straight line. What you described the conventional clutch pack limited slip diff does, is in fact what the Quaife does. The Quaife locks the diff action so both wheels spin at the same speed and the split is 50/50. While this means the wheel with grip 'only' gets 50% of the grip, rather than 70%. However, this means there is less load on the half shafts. On a standing start with a Quaife you will get two lines but that equal power split means the back end (on a rear wheel drive car) will step out to the right a bit. If you have any doubts about the accuracy of what I have said then ask Quaife to confirm/contradict or clarify.

Do you find any gear lash with the quaife lsd. I’ve had one fitted and I’m getting a clunk noise when on and off throttle ( load)

So having Torsen Bias diff eliminates the Traction Control and ABS systems??

If I understand you correctly this won't work in a 72 XJ12? Great info. Thanks.

Hi Jeff - this particular unit won’t fit in your XJ12, but you should already have a plate and clutch LSD in your car as standard. However, we are able to source an alternative Quaife unit suitable should you wish. We have put them in E Types before. If you want more info, send us an email - info@tomlenthall.co.uk 👍
