I have a lot of these and I love them. Inexpensive so if they go into the water when out fishing your not loosing $100.00 or more. Great quality and value for the money. Also if someone needs to "barrow" it and they forget to return it, not a big deal. Lastly in an emergency they could be used for trade, or barter items. Let's not forget your not going to rebuild a house with an $8 tool. Love mine. Oh and the saw is great to get into tight areas. Again it's an $8 tool.

Hey! I thought of a new category/consideration. "My First Multitool". As either a rating or seperated category, this would be a great way to get someone INTO EDC/carrying. How simple is it, likely hood of self-injury, likely hood of breaking/cost of replacement. I asked a number of guys at work if they EDC, only one knew what the concept was, and had a backpack for hiking trails.

Bought 2 of these a couple months ago just as a joke but I used to carry one everyday especially when camping. The saw has cut quite a few branches and has been a great fishing companion. Great tool overall for 8 bucks.

Perhaps another challenge you can take would be to turn the $8 tool into an $80 upgraded tool.? Lets design a multitool for people wearing suits, indoor workers even for mums at home on their sewing machine etc. You definitely gave us some great ideas to test out in the field. Cheers mate. Greetings from Australia.

Probably is too late for this suggestion, but you should test every scissors to cut zip ties, It's probably the most commonly cut material within a working/industrial/professional environment, at least in my experience.
Can't tell you how many times scissors are the only tool to be able to cut a zip tie securely enough not to damage what is around by accident (some fine electronic cables, wires, delicate circuitry etc.).
Edit. That's the main reason I bought the Leatherman surge and then the SOG snippet, just in case I switch my main multitool...

I think they were aiming the tool at a fisherman/outdooorsman that doesn't need or want to spend a bunch of money on a high end multi tool. it would be a decent addition to a tackle box or on a duck hunter's belt.

The scissors are just for cutting thread off clothing or a troublesome hair; that's about it. I think they designed the bottle opener that way because they couldn't violate other patents. The Phillips head screwdriver is good enough to replace a taillight bulb. I would use the saw to cut through plastic. Like you said, "it's good enough for a lot of things." The tool looks weird/the shape, not compatible with other sheaths for carry. There are other Multitools out there around the same price point, like the Schrade ST10, no scissors on it, though. Ozark trail is an option, and many others on Amazon.

My first plier-based multi-tool (from ~3 years ago, before I knew about EDC) looked a fair bit like this, spring and all, so not knocking it without having tried it - but even mine had a friction-folding(?) plain blade that would hit frame before hand bc inboard tools, and a serrated blade with a great package-opening scallop at the tip.
Even so, the driver and opener implements here look pretty promising as parts in/for a modification!

The scissors work way better if you put the proper force on it so push the handle a certain way so it keeps the gap of of the scissors tighter so it doesn't allow the object or item or cutting to flop thru I also use my thumb not my index finger and it works way better

  • @gnomersy1087

I don't really know how I feel about your scissor gauntlet to be honest like for a full size pair of scissors they all feel like reasonable tasks but several of the constraints don't really fit how I'd use the scissors irl and so it doesn't really feel representative of the experience I'd have. Like the no tension thing. If I'm cutting a seat belt or kevlar straps or even paracord I either have both hands available or they're being used to hold something down in which case they're under tension or I can apply tension using my second hand with a weirdish grip.
Edit: Also more specifically about this tool I think the scissors more or less fit what I'd expect out of them, the saw seems pointless but whatever I'd rather the bottle cap end was set up more for light prying but whatever and I'd like to see if this can hold light wire and bend it before I fully sign off on the pliers but for the price it seems pretty good honestly.

IMHO, you WAY overvalue scissors in a multitool. Outside of NexTool's approach, they are far too small to be really useful. The scissors on that tool (like the blade and the saw) are much shorter than they could have been in a tool of that length which makes how well they can cut almost a moot point. At best they can only be made marginally better than just gnawing through the material.
I agree that a saw that short is not much use outside of making stop cuts on small whittling projects. The blade is another story, though, largely because they had the sense to make the edge so straight.
