This kind of photography is EXACTLY what I want my business to be about! I see very few people talking about this style of photography outside of typical street photography videos. Do you know of any good resources that touch more on in-home documentary style photography?
Nathanael Gray YES! Check out family documentary photographer Kirsten Lewis. She did a great CreativeLive class that covered everything. I remember she spoke about sleeping over and documenting a full day. Good luck!
This is my podcast! Thought I'd share here as well. Time stamps: 0:00 Show update. 5:45 Shooting Family Photographs like a Photojournalist. Check out the Moe and O Show podcast here: th-cam.com/channels/T9G5Uj0w4_D5NgB1uRnTfg.html
Those pics of your kids at 10:37 are great! Crocs dance!!! and hugs!!! I am positive that when they are older they will absolutely treasure seeing these! Thanks for sharing.
Great! I have been doing this for a year, taking pictures of my family (husband and our 4 children) . With a selection of the best photographs I have made a photobook . All in black and white. It is a beautifull document and so nice to look in!
Thanks. 'Posy' kinds of shots are almost impossible in my family: four grandchildren aged 9 to 2 and crazy grown ups! Plus, the grandkids see my X100F come out and they all want a go - which I let them (under supervision!). Embarrassing that some of their stuff is better than mine... I've been shooting in the style you mention for a couple of years now and to be honest I love the memories and the pictures. And I will do a photobook from time to time - my son for Father's Day, my wife's special birthday, etc. I've been delivered from trying to catch formal pictures of family!
Its stange that i see this video for the first time even if I've been following you for a while, I have to say, this kind of phography is my favourite, I love to capture those mundane moments
Thank you for ALL of your videos, Omar. You are helping me, step-by-step, learn the tricks of my X-T30 and boost my confidence so that I ultimately have this camera with me at all times. I loved this particular video because family, pets and travel are the types of photos I take most often, and I need all the advice I can get. Just recently learning and loving using prime lenses! Keep the fun coming!!
Just wondered if you and Jim Carrey had a common ancestor, because you have the same ability to make the face do the laugh! Keep on going as yours is a refreshing channel, combining the zany, with the factual and the useful. You both deserve big love !!!
Great stuff again Omar. I’ve been living by these ideas for years now. It’s just great to hear you say them out loud. Shoot so you can’t be seen. Show your pictures to who ever will look at them. Words to live by. Thanks again for the work and the tine you put in.
Love the podcast and have listened to each episode at least twice, and love the idea of a longer audio only version as that's how I usually listen to it. Thank you!
Hope you're feeling better Moe. Good advice for family pics. I always enjoyed the "loose" format of the show, but I am interested in seeing (and hearing) version 2.0.
Thanks for your wonderful videos! They helped me a lot to make the decision to get an X-T20, which I finally got recently. 😊 As a father of a two year old old daughter I like the idea of a separate SD card for family photography a lot. Great and simple idea! But what really touched me deeply and got me writing this comment (which actually is my first TH-cam comment ever) were Nancy's photos. What a beautiful and powerful, yet sad project.
Documenting my family in a photojournalistic or documentary type style is soooo important to me for one reason. Our parents took our pictures and we now have memories to show for them. Fast forward to 2020 and everyone is just snapping them with a phone. Well, phones break. Phones get lost. Phones don't have the image quality that will stand the test of time. And many people don't upload their photos to their computer before getting a new one and hundreds of photos just die in time. Many people say well that's why I upload everything to Facebook and Instagram. Well what happens when those disappear? Are you really willing to put all your trust into social media? I won't. So for that reason, I want to remember my son with the best quality photos I can get so that one day, we can both look back and laugh like I do with my parents now. I want my pictures to tell a story. I want to smell the cookies being baked with grandma, I want that nostalgic feeling of playing with old toys to come back when he looks at them, I want to evoke emotion to others that see them. In an era of instant, I want a lasting result. I am working on putting a book together of my son's first three years of life. Even if the files become corrupt on my computer, I will have a print to fall back on like the old days.
Been watching you ever since before I bought my XT20 a couple years ago. First I've heard of Mo and O. Looking forward to the show, yours has been the most helpful and fun to watch photo channels. Learned so much from you. Thanks for all the effort
Great episode 👍 I've just took photos of my daughter's day from early morning to when she went to sleep and will be making a photobook. Also always documenting my grandparents birthdays 😊 That's the reason why i like photography so much, capturing memories.
Great idea! I have a neglected x100T, the camera that drew me away from Nikon full frame, that would be perfect for this. Slow auto focus and lack of eterna became reasons for lack of use, but it would be perfect for the B&W docu style. New life for an old friend. Thanks!
Love your channel and podcast. One feature of the Fuji 100 camera that lends itself to taking stealth photos is the leaf shutter. It’s so quiet that it is barely audible. The camera also takes great photos, too. Thanks for your service to the photo community, too!
+1 for the shorter clips focusing on a single topic, that's a great idea. Keeping the talk contained and having descriptive titles makes a huge difference, because it attracts people's attention better. Also, along with the topic of this one, what lens would you recommend? Zoom or prime? (I mention this because a zoom gives you the versatility of having many focal lenghts) If it's indoors, wide will be a must, I guess. Maybe 16 or 23 (in Fuji APS-C)? I saw your 27 on your X-T20. Is it any good for this kind of photography? Or perhaps it isn't wide enough? What AF settings would you use to be able to capture vanishing moments quickly? Focus & recompose? Face detection AF on? Judging by your pictures, you have experience doing this ... Maybe you could do a follow-up video expanding on this topic, I'd love that :D
First of all I really enjoy this channel. I've been following it since the beginning. Even before i had my first Fuji, the amazing x-t2. Why doesn't Fuji shrinks the x-t2 (no... the x-t20 although excellent, it's not the same experience/feeling)! Your commitment has motivated/drived my photography. Thank you! On the topic of this video, beside the above mentioned, that is spot on (autofocus continue is a must), i would add some other points for the follow up of this video (you have to do it, pretty please!!!!!): - low light indoors, before bed time? Flash, B&W, high iso noise? - Editing/ photo selection ( picking the best photos of loved ones it's hard, i want to keep them all, even if i have 5 of the same ... I'm a happy trigger, i blame my self afterwards) - when/how do you do, taking the memory card of your camera and getting those photos on your computer. Workflow for family photos, not job related! On can only wish for the follow up. Keep going... keep pushing forward!
Great show!! I really enjoy everything (how can I put italics here??) you do. You inspired me to get the X-T20 and really learn how to use it. Please keep up the great shows!
Happy Thanksgiving! I’ve been thinking bout this exact topic for a while. I plan on documenting my family and love the idea of a calendar. Glad I found the podcast. Keep up the great work!
great video something I had not thought about doing with my family looking at my family photos they show our holidays and that's about it but I think that is for most families will start and see how it goes thanks for the idea
Excellent video, one of the best. For almost 5 years (my son), I do almost only photo journalist of my family, it's my style and I totally share your opinion. The part about the price pictures on the Iphone made me laugh, and totally ok with you. My mother is getting older, it's time to spend more time with her to save as many great photos as possible. Best Omar
Great video and advice ... did smile at the Click Bait comment though (6 minutes before you got to headline subject!!) - but you’re such a nice guy so I forgive you!! 😂
Always have my (only) camera sitting around with a pancacke lens so it's not intrusive and wide anglr enough for these close moments and fast enough to use flashless so eben less intrusive. Google photo's is great since i share with family eho might be less tech savvy. Photo books print for very little money these days. And having one or a few frames dedicated for the recent best family shots around the house, just out of the printer. Although having one professionally printed is easily worth it. And it allows you to work on your skills.
Any recommandations for a small budget fuji home documenting camera? Am switching over from sony to fuji, but there are soooo many cameras to choose from...
I came back in town with my family a year ago and did just that, but then I got a bit of everything on camera and I felt people were getting annoyed so I slowed it down... then I almost stopped. It's a good thing you're video motivates me to get back on tract :) Also, My other favourite photo channel is Danae and Andrew and that's pretty much what they do too; Their videos are warmth to my hearth

Good channel! Subscribed.
What lens did you use for this type of photography?
Great message!
Well. You got a new sub. Thanks YT algorithm!😁
You use the 27mm for the project? Do you think the aperture is enough for indoor?
18-55mm @18 usually. 2.8. But the 16mm or 23mm 1.4 would be great. They're just so big.
You are really a likeable guy. I enjoy your content
