- You need a Social Security Number (SSN) to be allowed to work in the US. This is one of the very first things you need to get right after you arrive in the USA. Check out this video to guide you how to apply for your Social Security card.

Can I apply without a work offer?
Can I have a replacement SS card without the “valid for work only with dhs authorization”? I just received my EAD card today.
I have seen all this video and I need your help I request a replacement for my social security card online I did all the steps as you show them but before I send my application I was helping a friend request a replacement when a explained to him I put my name in said application and as you show in the video I put the name of other people where it corresponds to the name of the father and mother I know that the form does not have to be sent but by mistake I did send it the system sent me an online control number that I really don't know what is but I need my social security car do you think that if I make a new application they can take legal action against me and accuse me of fraud when I personally go to the office
ssn number can get US citizen and green card holders only?

Hi Sir good day, planning to fly to guam for SSN trip. Just have a question. Is it possible for my 5 and 7 year old kids to have an ssn even if I just bring their passports and visa packets without them entering the USA or any other US territory? Would I be able to do this with an expired visa? It still hasn’t been a year since it expired though? Also what is the wait time to receive them at the moment?
I don't think so. If you apply for an SSN, your immigration status should be current and not expired. For the wait times, it usually takes about 2-3 weeks for you to receive your SSN in the mail.
No you wont be able to apply for ssn on expired visa, unless you become eligible for a certain type of work visa, asylum or green card, once you overstay your visa you become an undocumented alien. apply for Itin number instead.

Sorry, no this doesn't work with a tourist visa. You need a student visa, work visa or immigrant visa to get SSN.

that's usually your passport number unless you have any other travel document such as an advance parole document or something like that.

Hi there, no not yet, B1 B2 visa holders cannot get SSN. You need to wait for the work visa. This is not legal advice and it's best to check with your employer's lawyer for the best way to move forward.

Approximately 2 weeks.
If after green card then 6 weeks because they have to re verify it w the DHS

Hi, I have a immigrant visa I do not have the actual physical green card yet. I went into the social security office and they advised that I have to wait for a green card before applying a social security number. How were you able to apply for one without a green card? I went to the website for the 1-94 record. Where is the travel document number?
hi, I got my SSN when I came to the US with my non immigrant visa. but you can apply for your SSN as part of I-485 (adjustment of status) or I-765 (application for employment authorization document or EAD). The EAD usually comes before the green card so try applying for that if you haven't yet.
@@CluelessintheUS This means even if i do not have green card, I can still get the SSN on the basis of I-485? Second question, can i apply for SSN even if i do not have EAD card or not eligible for one yet?
Hi, if you apply for the SSN as part of your I-485, you can get it as part of your green card application. I don't completely understand your second question. But in our experience, my wife got her SSN together with her EAD. Because we applied for it together with her I-485.

My understanding is that you can apply for SSN once you get to the US. That's what I did. What's your visa class?

lol. yeah, family petitions take a very long time!! I'm sorry I am not familiar with that process. But from what I know, you can apply for a social security number once you're in the US and you either have a non-immigrant visa, or you're already in the process of adjustment of status (USCIS Form i-485).
This video has nothing to do with other case, but only who have employment offer which next to impossible while your not in green card..very confusing 😅
