Your Social Security Number, or SSN for short, is one of the most important documents you must apply for. Depending on your situation, the process can vary. For the most part, it is straightforward, but it can be tricky for non-US citizens. If you don’t qualify for an SSN, you may qualify for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN for short. Understanding the criteria for filing, the required documents, and the filing process can be very complicated.
Don't worry; we've made it easy.
In this video, we cover how to apply for an SSN. We will walk you through the application process and the required supporting documents. For those who don’t qualify for an SSN, you will need to apply for an ITIN. If you don’t know the difference between the two, we recommend you watch our previous video - what are SSN and ITIN, and why do you need them, and then come back to this one. We’ve left the link to it in the description.
Before we even begin, please note that you shouldn't apply for a new SSN if you’ve ever been issued an SSN. Your SSN doesn’t change. Call the Social Security Administration Office if you've forgotten your number. They will help locate it for you. If you’ve lost your SSN card, you must request a replacement card instead of applying for a new SSN.
Assuming you’ve never been issued an SSN before, the documents required to apply for your SSN will vary slightly. We will cover scenarios for International Students on F1 visas, including CPT and OPT applicants and H1-B visa holders. The application process for other visa holders will have a similar process so follow along.
Regardless of your application type, it is a three-step process:
Step 1: Fill out the Social Security Card application form online or print it out.
This form is called Form SS-5. We’ve left the link to our website in the description, where you will find the referenced documents in this video.
Step 2: Gather your required documents.
These vary depending on whether you’re a full-time student or getting ready to apply to CPT or OPT. We will review these scenarios in a moment.
Step 3: Make an appointment at your local Social Security Administration office.
Locate it using the links we’ve left on our website. We recommend calling and making an appointment. Many locations don’t take appointments, so you will need to do a walk-in.
It means showing up to the SSA office without an appointment. If you’re doing a walk-in, it may take two to three hours or more, depending on how busy the office is, so plan accordingly.
By the way, if you’re looking for related tips and tricks, check them out on our website. We’ve left a link to it in the description.
Step 4: Appear for your interview.
Along with Form SS-5, bring all original required documents to your interview appointment. Your interview will be a casual conversation. You don’t need to do anything special to prepare for it. While the wait may be an hour or two, the interview should not take more than 15 minutes.
Once your interview is over, the SSA office will issue a letter acknowledging your application has been received. You should show it to your DSO and your employer so you can start working if you haven’t already.
Remember, Social Security Administration allows you to start working while processing your SSN. However, You must receive your SSN card to get paid. It can take up to 14 days to arrive but typically takes 7 to 10 days.
