That’s such a dumb thing to comment on tbh, for one it implies that he looked less good before because of his weight, and two, some people lose weight for reasons beyond their control like cancer etc. It’s a terrible feeling to know people think their friends/family look better when they are sick than they did when they were heavier. Just a thought.

Sharks are such misunderstood creatures. I’ve only ever had a shark encounter once, with a leopard shark, and it sat on the bottom of the reef looking at the weirdos in dive gear. I was in more danger from the lionfish than that shark. That dive honestly is my top dive ever just for the shark alone. I wanted to pet it, it looked so friendly.
Just remember the same rule doesn't always apply to terriers. If the fur beast looks cute, rolls onto it's back for a tummy rub, it still might maul you. Sharks are more like my German shepherd. She loves everyone but my Uncle and i agree with her. I've wanted to bark at him, too 😇
I tried to per a conger it looked so sweet and friendly it turned nasty and chased me. Off uam terrified off them now 😳

sea snakes are the most chill. Most species you can actively handle without much fear of being bitten, they dont see humans as a threat most of the time.
Some species of sea snakes have short enough fangs to not pierce neoprene wet suits. however loads and loads of the sea snakes do have long enough fangs to bite through a suit.
So basically don't be scared of them. But also don't f*&k with them.
Couple things, one, I have been diving for 40 years. I have been on countless dives with sharks and have never been attacked. It is one of the most exciting and amazing part of a dive when you are lucky enough to see them. Two, Gus, it looks like you have been loosing some weight. Good for you, I have lost about 45 pounds since I met you guys in Atlanta last year. Motorcycle Bob.

On one of my first open water, checkout dives, I became seasick at about 30 feet and vomited. Prior to that, I had no history of motion sickness. There was a odd current that was rapidly moving back-and-forth. once I could see the ocean floor, the back-and-forth movement had a very bad effect on me. Obviously, that wasn’t a great experience, but I was proud of the fact that, I kept composure, did not get anxious at all, and simply cleared the regulator. I can confirm that the fish do immediately congregate for the free meal.
To be fair to the fish, YOU seemed to be "done with it"... haha ;o)

I bet the first kid was spearfishing. If his family has a boat and he heads out to the reef alone at age 15 with gear. he’s probably been in ocean a lot. It mentioned he usually wore a chain mail sleeve but forgot it, and i wouldn’t imagine you’d need one for much else
100%. The only reason a lone shark on a reef would go after someone is if he was out there shooting fish and got it fired up.
It would be really cool if y’all did a video with the channel Shark Bytes sometime. He’s a shark scientist and says pretty much what y’all do when swimming with sharks. Just respect them and know their power, but they aren’t inherently dangerous. This channel and his has really helped my fear of the ocean and has actually made me want to learn to dive eventually. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Don't ever apologise for advocating for sharks! they are so important and endangered! Totally agree that lying on a medical is a no no, risking others as well as yourself is not cool, horrendous way to find out if not!

@@jaredchampagne2752 many species of sharks are actually endangered. The great hammerhead shark is critically endangered. Just google "endangered shark species" and you will see which ones are considered endangered. Overfishing is what is wiping out the great hammerhead. They are caught incidentally and they are targeted for their fins.
Commercial overfishing will empty our oceans of life.
Snake Island (the one where the divers died, not the one in Brazil) is right near me, I've dived it multiple times. Fantastic dive site with a couple of wrecks on one side of the island (~120ft deep) and a ~400ft wall on the other side. Not a single snake to be found on the island, it's super tiny, just a series of small rocks poking out above the surface of the ocean really.
Ive been blessed with a few encounters with sharks. 3 while snorkeling in the British Vigin Islands and 1 when claming in Nova Scotia.
The most memorable encounter was when a 6 footer physically ran into me. I was snorkeling with my father and sister in a massive school of shinners in about 3 foot of water. The school was so thick it was like wearing a bubble forcefield as they moved away and around us. My father was about 30 feet towards the shore from me and my sister was right on my heals.
I was just derpin along when wham! It was like being hit by a paddle narrow side in the face and all I saw was brown for a split second then salt water in the eyes. Startled as all hell i stood up and saw the distinct 2 fins thrashing for deeper water. My father yells over "holy shit did you see that!" I responded "I didn't see shit, but I felt it".
He had swam right into it and in its haste to escape my father, it ran right into me. I had goggle marks for a couple days afterwards. An awesome experience. Had a few other less exciting encouters there too.
Another one was claming on cape sable Island. We clam off a sand bar in chest deep water 1/2 to a mile from shore and normally the seals stay well away but this day we all said it felt eery out there. The seals seemed agitated and were very active. Usually they just bob and watch from a distance.
That night a local fisherman posted a video of a 14 foot white killing a seal on the very sandbar we were claming. Taken an hour after we left. Soooo freakin cool!

so i just found your channel recently, and even though i would just watch all the "scary" videos, little under a month and i have become so curious and fascinated of the world of scuba diving. i live in SD so i don't think many dive sites around here but i did find this one place where i could go train and get certified and i'm going to schedule a class here in the upcoming future. i'm ready to dip my toes 😉 into the world of scuba diving.

Because you also make diving interesting to those who don’t dive I was watching one of your videos at work and I had someone see and randomly ask me if I dive and start talking to me. Turns out he’s a dive master here and pushed me over the edge to sign up for classes!!
Me and my brother finished the online PADI course (I knew a majority just from watching your videos!) and we have our pool test and first dives next weekend!!!
I know you get hate comments and may not realize to what extent you make impact on others but it’s more than you know!!

Amen, the non-drowsy dramamine is USELESS! And for people like me who get really seasick, even regular dramamine won't cut it unless it makes me pass out first. However, the ear patch was amazing. I still got a little sick trying to snorkel but on the boat for an hour total I was fine. I couldn't handle a full hour snorkeling in the water though.
@@maryeckel9682 Zofran doesn't work on my motion sickness. Thankfully it works for me for most other nausea issues.
My mom was epileptic and would have a variety of seizures all the way up to Grand mal and even during her most heavy episodes I would see intake of air. That would be horrible to have a seizure underwater! Keep up the good work guys, I love your vids.
At some school function I was sitting next to a girl near the top of the bleachers when she had a seizure. Somehow she was falling into the space between the floor and the next seat down. Since a family friend often had grand mal's when visiting us, I was familiar with what to do and not do. Sill, I couldn't just let her fall all that way maybe hitting steel on the way down so I grabbed her and tried to stay where it would be physically impossible to hit me with strength. What really sticks out in my mind is her friends were laughing about it and refusing to help, and I was losing my grip on her. We both ended up being fine. I still think that was a good time to make an exception to the rule. A mild risk of a broken nose and knocked out tooth vs serious injury or maybe even death seemed like a no brainer. I guess the difference in a dive situation might be the added risk of mask or regulator being pulled off and maybe lost and having your fingers bitten off, all for the regulator likely not fitting right so it can do its job. Maybe if it isn't a bitey or clenchy kind of seizure or once it is over, try to put in on the way up. In any case, the thought of seeing someone involuntarily breathing water is terrifying. Really can't see it being a good recreational activity for an epileptic person unless maybe it is under perfect control for many years.
It makes me wonder if the mamalian dive reflex remains intact during seizure episodes... Normally even when we go uncounscious, our brain still keeps our throat and lips closed when the face is wet.
@@DavidMaruca_ Just from my dubious experience (largely being limited)... With seizures, "All bets are off"... That's the best I can tell you. A seizure is like a system-wide, running, short-circuit of the brain... random impulses just firing off everywhere, and no telling what is liable to happen...
With an ordinary regulator, clamped in the teeth, I'd have to vote "cut losses and thumb it" as soon as the regulator is dislodged... I can take time and try more to protect and make a slow, controlled ascent up to that point, but then... well... it's just better to live with the consequences of getting bent and spending a few days in observation or a hyperbaric chamber than it is to sit tight and watch your dive-buddy drown with your thumb in your ass...
It's a somewhat arbitrary, but completely personal priority I've already set in my mind (so I don't have to think much about it "in the moment"... being that I'll likely be subject to "scared out of my mind" just about like anyone else)...
How you prefer to handle a situation like that is totally up to you. I might make the recommendation to try and get informed "just in case" and kind of "program yourself" when you can sit quietly and make a reasoned and decisive choice about where exactly to put that "line"... when you guard and start a controlled ascent, or shoot for the surface and "damn the consequences"...
Make no mistake here. Getting bent SUCKS... It CAN be deadly, but the technology we have today makes life such that there ARE treatments for all that sort of thing, and you can at least get the help needed if "worse comes to worse"... It's NOT an instantaneous death sentence, so most of the time, it's imminently survivable. Drowning because someone spit their reg' out or bit the rubber tooth-guards off mid-seizure isn't so much... and I'm never much in a mood to sit idle and watch someone die. ;o)

I took the non drowsy Dramamine on a shark dive and I puked my brains out because the water was so rough. Good to know I need to take the strong stuff next time! Also the misrepresentations and over dramatization of shark interactions is one of my pet peeves. They are curious creatures and not the blood-thirsty-man-eaters that the media portrays. Glad you guys can help educate others on a sharks true nature :)

The drowsy dramamine works great. 6 foot seas and my lunch stayed right where it belongs. As soon as your face hits the cool water it wakes you right up anyway.
Maybe if they weren’t capable of being a complete killing machine and when you do see a shark normally your in the water where your helpless. Just maybe I would agree. Mountain lions rarely attack people also but if I saw one I’d be fuckin terrified.

I love sharks, and diving with them. They certainly aren’t as dangerous as some people say, but there are plenty of videos of sharks biting divers to show that it can and does happen. Explaining this away as “mistaken identity” doesn’t mean much when you’re bleeding out at depth.

You have an 11ft 300+ pound shark B-lining it for you and instead of panicking or freaking out she does the most badass gangster thing ever, and proceeds to headbutt the shark. That shark was probably very confused for the rest of the day thinking "Did I really just get headbutted by my food???"

10 and 9: I got scuba certified one year ago and my instructor said divers don't get attacked by sharks - snorkelers do.
8. My instructor also said that if you have to throw up, after you spew, your first instinct is to suck in air and your regulator is so small it won't hold much upchuck, so take one side out of your mouth and purge your regulator as you're throwing up.

Hey Gus... the fear and hate snakes get is not at all unlike the fear and hate sharks get. Once you learn about snakes and their behavior your opinions will change. They are some of the most fascinating and amazing predators we have on planet earth.
Yes, agreed- I chanced upon snake youtube and although it wasn’t my biggest fear in the planet, I was freaked/skeezed out by them; however, after getting intrigued & binging some episodes… my fear and anxiety 80% disappeared. I realized the worst case scenario w/ most snakes is a bite… & the rest really are trying to avoid ppl. But it reinforced my belief that education is the antidote to fear. Works with flight anxiety as well! Mentaurpilot is great for helping ease unrealistic fear surrounding airline flights.
The fear of them is alike... you cant see either coming and an investigatory/ warning strike/bite can end your life quickly. Also snakes are so much more common in peoples day to day life. Maybe you dont live in an area with rattlesnakes or other venomous snakes but to pretend fear of snakes is misplaced is moronic.

Actually, you guys are right about sharks and every time I say so to someone I get a bunch of crap too. That's fine, if people want to get their shark knowledge from highly accurate historical documentaries like Jaws, Sharknado and Deep Blue Sea, that's totally top notch information just god help you if you ever see a shark. I'm sure it'll be a near death experience.
Absolutely. My mum has swum with sharks and first hand has seen that they're not malicious or violent animals. Only can get very hungry and therefore crazy sometimes!

Hear me out guys. Born and raised in Jupiter, spearfisher, avid diver and shark diver here. If you’ve ever dove on a shark boat there’s specific requirements as to what you wear.
Sharks are contrast feeders and a black shorty wetsuit with white forearms are totally a situation that could cause a shark to accidentally take a curious nibble.
Let’s not act like sharks are entirely without risk. By and large they’re harmless but silly divers can instigate shark accidents if they don’t know what they’re doing.

Natural sea sickness remedy, chop ginger root in to chunks and put it in some water about half way up the chunks. Simmer slowly, When the water is nearly gone and the ginger is sticky. Take it off the heat and add in brown sugar so it goes to sticky and cover the ginger. When it is cold pop it into a plastic pot and cover with brown sugar.
Chew it and it will work better than any tablets. My Mom feeds the fish on a regular basis but since using this, she’s not been sick.

There is ALWAYS a risk of DCS. Yes, sometimes the risk is less than other times. But there have been reported cases of DCS from simply flying even without diving. Rapid change of ambient pressure creates the risk.

Aahhh! Darnit. I'm a med professional, so I will clarify that yes, people breathe during a seizure. And most people having a.seizure are unaware of their actions. And are highly unlikely to be able to think " I gotta hold my breath". It seems amazing he lived. It is ok to put something in their mouth if you can open it and if it makes an immediate difference to life at that moment. All of it sounds awful, and he's fortunate someone noticed and helped in time.

I don't have a food ritual before kayaking but I always make sure to eat a lot, as long as it's not a sugary breakfast. A sugary meal will make me crash, get shaky, faint, and weak. I have to stay away from granola bars and cereal.

I also want to point out that people can have seizures without epilepsy. My mother had one grand mal seizure at the age of 55 (while parking her car; she was so lucky it wasn't 5 minutes earlier). They did all the tests, tried everything to induce more seizures and concluded she doesn't have epilepsy. It was a one-off. Which is apparently not that uncommon.

Saw a 6-8ft hammerhead 2 weeks ago while spearfishing. It kept its distance but kept circling us at about 30ft radius. We went into the shallows as a group and at about 8ft depth it finally turned back and disappeared.
Concerning Snake Island. I believe the Army visits to check and perform maintenance on a light house.
I need a heavy dose of gravol because I’ll puke uncontrollably. no idea why, never was an issue before my son was born but now just the thought of being on a boat makes me nauseous or any vehicle for that matter 😂
Sharks feel with their teeth how humans feel with their fingers, so typically sharks out of curiosity will take a “bite” but it is simply because they are feeling what is presented to them.
I think I like that she ends on David Shaw at Bushman's Hole. I feels fitting that more people who aren't into diving should learn about that hearbreaking but amazing story. I remember when I first learned about him. There's a band called We Lost the Sea and they have a song on their Departure Songs album called "The Last Dive of David Shaw". No words. It's an atmospheric odyssey that begins with about 2.5 minutes of someone breathing on a respirator underwater and talking periodically. I don't recall if it's from the actual documentary. The music that follows is absolutely beautiful and still to this day when I hear it, I'm reminded about how heroic of an act that was. I still tear up whenever I hear it, lol. but because the impact was so profound, I couldn't help but look him up.
I barfed at Cabo Pulmo during a dive once. If you want to see some fish really close up, it works every time. They love protein bars. Who knew.

I wonder if it's more common for sharks to occasionally be agitated by an open circuit ... it is an unnatural loud and, for all we know, disturbing thing that might just annoy some individual sharks. In that case, using rebreathers would make it that much less likely to have aggression issues. Like how someone with a straw and a nearly empty cup that just wont accept its empty in a movie theater is just asking for conflict lol.
I freedove in a pool once, needless to say I got lost in a cave before turning up in a shipwreck that happened to be located in an iceberg, once the sediment, ice and squid cleared I made it out, unfortunately I surfaced on a crashing plane.

There is an annual migration of hammerheads in the Gulf of Mexico each spring. February through early March is the best time to witness it. It’s an amazing thing to witness. Flower Garden Banks NMS is where I have seen it in the past. It’s an amazing open ocean dive spot. The top of the reefs start around 60’ and goes deeper from there. Stetson Banks are close by and is another amazing dive site.

Now I don’t know about sharks but I have a pair of maroon clown fish that are absolute killers when I stick my hand in the tank 😂
I'm willing to bet the guy bitten by the mako shark likely had something shiny on his arm that caused the shark to think there was a fish. It's a common warning around seals to make sure that you're not wearing silver jewellery and to be careful with under water cameras, either because they are silver, of the waterproof casings with trapped air in look silvery. It makes them think foods there and they end up biting limbs.

I think at that snake island they have a lighthouse or something that needs occasional maintenance, that’s why the army guys go there once in a while.

A German marine biologist named "Robert Mark Lehmann" (btw. he takes awesome wildlife pictures) always always told people, sharks are no danger and they are just as scared of you as you are of them and also they dont like human blood and also humans dont taste like what they are hunting for. Eventually I would like to get my diving certification. Lying about medical forms is the most whack behavior. I suffer from chronic illness, resulting in cyclical vomiting. Wildly enough I don’t get sea sick.
I would LOVE a full break down on throwing up during a dive. It’s so cool to me that something that disrupts my life regularly potentially wouldn’t get in the way of learning how to dive.

I live in NY, been to the Andrea, also have seen hammerheads here on more then one occasion, I don’t like swimming with any marine life that can defeat me, but hammerheads is truly a majestic shark absolutely beautiful.

The reason army guys go to snake island is because the lighthouse needs to be checked and the bulb replaced. No one lives there so it can't be checked without outside assistance.
