depends on the species of shark, i would never stand there next to groups of bull sharks like that, nurse sharks I am pretty unconcerned about and some other timid ones. Some people live next to the sea and make their living from the ocean so we don't have as much choice. But still more people get taken by things like Lions, Wolves, Bears, Tigers in places where people live in proximity to those animals.

@@cocksure8430 the actual point of any spotter is to give you enough warning in advance that some sort of action can be taken, although I rather suspect there was a fair bit of complacency involved in Eric's bite.
RIP to Erich Ritter. He made one mistake and it will be unfortunate that's what he'll be remembered for the most. As he did so much for shark conservation and educating people about sharks.

It always makes me wonder whether it's ego-driven pontification, wishful thinking, or a mixture of the two that makes wildlife presenters so eager to declare that sharks only bite humans when they "get confused", as if we're so intrinsically special that we couldn't POSSIBLY be viewed as a handy food source by a huge marine predator intentionally. They speak as if they are certain that if "the shark only knew we were humans, it wouldn't DREAM of devouring us!"
I don't think for a minute that we humans are anywhere nearly so special to the other creatures with whom we share the biosphere as we are to ourselves. No, sharks don't single us out as their main prey items, because we don't normally live in their environment, however, if we are stupid enough, or unfortunate enough, to end up sharing the water with them, then we are just as legitimate a target as any seal, fish, ray, or what have you. We are made of meat. Sharks eat meat. It is just that simple. No amount of privileged insider knowledge about the latest theories on shark behaviour will ever make them safe swimming companions for people.
Want to avoid becoming shark food? Stay out of the bleeding water. There is no mystery to this reality.
It comes from a conservation culture that was born out of sharks being put at risk of extinction by people killing them en masse and being afraid of them.
The conservationists decided to go full Shark Public Relations mode to improve the image of sharks in the minds of normies, so that normies would support the cause of shark preservation.
Now it's just what you might call the "politically correct" attitude about sharks. It's how polite society talks about sharks. It's how Shark Experts talk about sharks.
You may notice this same phenomena (reality denial, rose coloured glasses, giving the benefit of doubt despite all evidence, "don't believe your lying eyes" hot-takes) taking place in other areas of modern life as well.

I just roll my eyes when I hear the tired old mantra of “ sharks don’t eat humans, they just mistake them for seals “. Big Bull Sharks and Great Whites are apex predators and all sorts of prey have been found in their stomachs. A hungry shark wants to eat. The primary determining factor is available food sources and opportunity. I’m not a shark but if I’m extremely hungry I’ll eat a hotdog even though I would prefer a ribeye steak 🥩. It’s all about survival.
So despite the fact that statistical evidence says that the odds of getting bitten by a Shark are astronomically low when encountering one...somehow you've come to the conclusion that every time somebody is in the water with a Shark, they're in serious danger?

Bull sharks are worse though, in my opinion, due to the fact that they can live in fresh water, as well as salt water.

As the only shark species that can adapt to fresh water from salt, bull sharks routinely swim up the Mississippi River. I live on a barrier island in St. Pete, FL on the Boca Ciega Bay. A mile to my south, a retiree was in the habit of jumping off his dock and swimming every morning in the bay. A few years ago, his jump into the bay interrupted a feeding bull shark and it bit him in half.
Was he suicidal or just moronic ?
They aren’t the only shark that can adapt to brackish or fresh water. Scallop head and bonnet heads can adapt as well, and I’m sure there are probably more.

Nearly 50 years ago when I was in college I spent a summer doing an internship at a facility along the Mississippi coast and my then wife and I stayed in the Hercules employee fish camp located on the Pascagoula (Singing) River. The camp was inland a short distance from the location that the river dumped into the Gulf and at the camp's boat docks shrimpers and fisherman would clean their catch and throw the guts and shells, etc into the water.
I would get out nearly every afternoon and swim across that river and I never had any idea that a shark would be or could be found in that water. Had I known I wouldn't have dipped my toe in the thing.
During our stay Pascagoula sponsored a fishing rodeo so we drove over one afternoon to see what had been hauled out of the depths. There were plenty of sharks to be seen, including a Tiger that was probably 12-14' long.

Bulls are notoriously unpredictable and aggressive. As a Floridian, they are part of the ecosystem that must be respected. Much like the American alligator. We know they can live in fresh water. We take precautions. If you come to this subtropical environment, then you'd be best off having a healthy respect for it.
I reported the first crocodile spotted in the keys. Many years ago. At a swimming hole in Ramrod. Definitely wasn't an alligator. The snout was long and thin with a bump at the end. Later, my sighting was confirmed.
Sometimes stupidity gets punished. Find it difficult to feel sorry for that 'EXPERT'. Couldn't watch anymore of that 'expertise' after that 'expert' accident.

Why haven't I seen this before - its hilarious. Standing in a shallow lagoon surrounded by bull sharks with the 'expert' Eric, who says "As long as we don't move they will realize we are not a threat to them" who is then immediately attacked and a chunk of flesh bitten out his calf. This man is an idiot who has started to believe his own lies. This a a wild, dangerous and unpredictable animal, not a pet Eric.

These Bull Sharks for me seem to have come out of no where. I grew up as a child fishing with Dad & Uncles & brothers & felt I heard all there was about sharks, grey nurse, bronze whaler, hammerhead. I think I was in my teens when I heard of the Great White Shark and only in the past 15 years or so the Bull Shark suddenly becomes a very prevalent shark. I’m 69 now.
Watching this towards the end I recall some 25 approx years ago being on the end of bait nets (60 ft long) after dark!!!!! And further back almost 40yr ago dragging the bait nets in the Burnett River again after dark. At these times I had not heard of the Bull Shark, maybe I’m lucky to still have my arms n legs (or life)!!!! 🦈🦈🦈
They haven't came put of nowhere. They were litterally the inspiration for the movie Jaws. From the real like shark attacks of 1916 in Nee Jersey.
The juvenile hammerhead looked dead - although freshly - when it was onboard being handled and for certain when it was dropped back into the water by the show host. Watch again. If I am mistaken I invite the researchers to explain what I saw and interpret.
We often catch Scalloped Hammerheads here on the east coast of South Africa and they are incredibly delicate, especially the juveniles. To ensure that they don't die we have to get them back in the water as soon as possible. The other species like Blackspots, Milkys, Smoothounds, Spinners etc are fairly robust but Hammerheads are definitely not. I agree that the Hammerhead in this video was probably killed by the trauma of being netted and being unable to swim. On a side note, it is crazy irresponsible for a "shark science" documentary to encourage people to touch or tickle or try and flip a shark over.....

The baby bull shark was adorable, but the adult ones are assholes. And that goes for all sharks (only predatory ones; not whale sharks, etc.). I smile everytime I see any news about dolphins or orcas killing a shark. I don't trust sharks no matter what anyone says. I'll swim with any cetaceans and feel comfortable, but I'll never get in the water with predatory sharks.
Every Shark is a predator, There are no herbivorous sharks, and just because there are Cetaceans around does not mean there are no sharks around, I have seen both in the water in the same area at the same time.

I love when people claim to be experts on sharks. I love how they tell you that sharks have amazing senses, and then in the next sentence say that most attacks are mistaken identity. Just like this guy there are a lot of people who think they have apex predators figured out.
How many of these self proclaimed experts have been severely disabled, or killed by all types of predators? Let’s just use common sense. Shark are carnivores. We are made out of meat. There are too many cases of sharks completely consuming a person, or returning again and again to eat off of a victim. This guy just literally said that tiger sharks accidentally eat people. That is one of the dumbest remarks I have ever heard. Tiger sharks do not mind eating people at all. I promise that. There is a woman who takes videos of herself, swimming with huge sharks. She is going to end up like the Bear man, and countless others who thought they had a bond with predators. These so-called experts are getting people killed. Shark attacks happen more often than we realize. When I was 18, I saw an old man get attacked by a 10 foot bull shark. It returned over and over taking large bites. It literally ate him in half. Feeding or spearfishing dramatically increase the odds of something going wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that you are far FAR more likely to be in a dangerous car accident while buying some groceries than you are to be bitten by a Shark you encounter.

Ever since I seen the video of that poor Russian guy getting attacked and eaten in the Red Sea I’ve been binge watching shark attack videos. I have a phobia of sharks. It’s unnerving to even see them on screen. It’s also my biggest fear in the world and the main reason I stick to clear water and the shallows. If I see any big movement I’m out.

I will never understand when they always say “attacked by accident” or “eaten by accident”. No, no it wasn’t an accident. It is an apex predator. It may want something with more fat like a seal, but we humans will be just fine to eat if the shark is hungry enough. My wife and I like shore diving, whether snorkeling or scuba. A couple of years ago we hugely enjoyed a week of scouring the coastline of St. Croix, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. One day after a rainy, surfy spell we went into the Salt River Bay, or Arawak Bay, not one of the prime destinations, but handy and as yet unexplored by us. Near zero visability, we got out after a few minutes. The Salt River flows down through a developed area of the island, and effluent around river mouths attracts bull sharks, as it does around the world. Nothing bad happened, but something told me nothing good could come of staying in. Anyone seen bull sharks around St. Croix?

I live on the Atlantic coast of Florida. I’ve come to learn that with most sharks, when they bite a human it’s usually a single exploratory strike to see if your edible. I’ve been bumped countless times by blacktips and a few lemon sharks while fishing waist deep in the surf and at least so far they’ve never attempted a bite. Bull sharks are a completely different story. Once a Bull attacks, it’s going to press the attack, and once they find a consistent food source, including humans, they will claim that territory and actively hunt them. Living where I do, it is uncommon to go to the beach and NOT see tourists blissfully ignoring their kids while they play in the surf. While I normally take great care in releasing other sharks when I catch them, I kill every Bull I catch. I’ve hooked a dozen or so over the past 4-5 years, most of them in less than four feet of water, and the thought of releasing one to have it maul or kill someone’s kid is more than I can bear. Can I say I’ve prevented an attack? Nope, but I can say that these sharks that were feeding in an area overwhelmingly used by swimmers and surfers both young and old, definitely won’t be attacking anyone.
Don’t kill animals!
You do know they are important for the eco system, right? They improve the health of the fish population, they dispose of dead animals and they simply have a right to live.
People choose to go into the water, the sharks have no choice. It is THEIR world.

They are certainly pretty vicious considering their testosterone levels when they are amped up and biting hard. However, the Oceanic White Tip is what did the U.S.S. Indianapolis crew in when it sunk. And too me their is no other shark you want around you when in deep water.

This guy lost his right to the title of “shark expert”. And to make matters worse, he continues to make excuses for how dangerous sharks are. I’m tired of these do-gooders making sharks out to be lap dogs. Reality is reality, no matter what YOU may want it to be.
What an "expert". Reminds me of all the TH-cam Reddit Shark Armchair apologists who think every shark attack is just "mIsTaKeN IdEnTiTy" or that we are not on their menu and then come up silly statistics that you're most likely to get killed in a car accident. Duh, people drive with their car daily but don't swim as frequent in waters with sharks. That self-proclaimed expert risked not only his life but the life of the narrator and the camera guy as well. As silly as the keyboard scientists who think they can judge and categorize wild animal behavior because they mindlessly repeat what they got told by others.

Finally, a decent documentary about the real danger in our waters. Yeah, Great Whites and Tigers are big and a bite from them can prove fatal. One bite, and they are like ~ "That was nasty… spit spit spit!" A Bull Shark just won't stop.
True but neither would a tiger shark. They eat everything and unlikely the great white they keep attacking their prey, eating it alive.
