    Finally got my FTW3...couldn't be much happier. Maxed the power, temp and voltage targets, and threw the fans into aggressive mode and ran Unigine Heaven for 7 hours straight to see how hot it would get, how noisy, and what clocks it could achieve.
    Card hits 2000Mhz like this with no core offset, until it hits ~55C, then it drops down to 1987Mhz, and stays there because it never goes past 60C. Usually sticks around 58. At these temps, the fans don't go much higher than 60 or so percent, so it's still pretty quiet. Pretty happy with it.
    Gonna start overclocking as soon as EVGA sends me a code for Unigine Superposition(they have a promo giving out premium versions of it for free)...so I can use that for stability testing, as I am bored of Heaven and the like.
    Also, IAMA about how that extra $30 totally decimated my bank account boys. Times are rough because of it, I may have to sell my house and get a cardboard box to game in lol.

      I paid £810 (20% Value Added Tax for imports in UK) from my favourite dealer. From appearances they get 10 in stock and sell them with in a few hours, the out of stock price returns to £799. I'm very happy with my purchase though. I think the aesthetics of the strix alone are worth paying more for, no photos or videos do it justice. Even if I went for the mid tear cards I would still be paying 20% more lol .

    Steve remains the best youtuber in the industry BAR NONE... His personality in combination with his excellent communication skills, and long hair is a testament to his individuality and abilities.. He is highly intelligent, and committed balls to bones to his craft, and is self evident to those of us who have watched him for years...
    He is the pinnacle broadcaster within his segment of industry and should have long ago received his 1 Million Sub TH-cam award... It is a injustice that someone of his caliber has to wait so long to be recognized for his contributions and the education he has been providing all us without complaint or fail for years..
    While I am convinced he will indeed hit 1 million Subs... I will continue to support and recognize his contributions to the hobby we all love. Well done Steve.... Keep doing you bro! we got your back and support you 100%

    EVGA Deserves way more credit for keeping thier FTW3 card limited to a 2 slot profile. That's a big deal to a lot of people, way more than a few dba in noise output or degrees of heat.

    • @Colehh
      @Colehh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Rin Chi note that past 30dba (i think) each 3dba is now twice as loud. I remember that at some point the increase by 3dba leads to twice the percived 'loudness'.

    • @yeti9254
      @yeti9254 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Don't forget the other BIG advantage of buying EVGA: SUPPORT!
      Asus is *renowned* for being HORRIBLE to deal with if your product arrives DOA/needs *any* modification!

    • @eliadbu
      @eliadbu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ColehBroleh you confuse loudness and sound pressure in db you should search for the measument loudness, since it depends on few parameters like frequency and sound wave pressure, andvit is also subjective matter.

    • @ryanhalewood8784
      @ryanhalewood8784 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought +3db was twice the intensity. Just enough for us to perceive and +10db was about twice the perceived volume. I duno though I learned that stuff nearly 10 years ago :D

      @Bannockburn111 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are right about EVGA, they have a great support reputation. Personally I wouldn't know because I've never had an issue with an EVGA product. And THAT's the reason I go EVGA for my graphics solutions - better to never find out how good their support actually is in the first place. :)
      As far as Asus - I've had good success with their products but did warranty a graphics card a number of years ago. I had no trouble at all with the process, it was timely and there was no drama involved. That said, I've always had the thought that Asus's engineering ideas were at the top of the business but their manufacturing execution wasn't up to the same standard. Fortunately they've recognized this and taken steps to improve their production quality, hopefully it will mean better reliability for their customers.
      If it weren't for EVGA I'd have no problem buying the Strix - or the Gaming X for that matter. And as far as mainboards - Asus or MSI, EVGA isn't top-tier there, for me.

    Is anyone really going to complain over $30 when you're spending over $750 on a video card?

    • @serban2139
      @serban2139 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Christopher F yes. not me, but yes.

    • @TheOneAndOnlyCha
      @TheOneAndOnlyCha 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Christopher F As someone who bought an EVGA 1080 Ti SC2, I'll tell you yes, the $30 extra ($80 in comparison to FE card) is definitely still a factor. Even those of us willing to spend that much on a GPU must believe it's worth the extra money.
      To give you my perspective, when I was weighing up my options, I asked myself what was important to me. I really liked the idea of iCX, so I decided to go EVGA. With the current state of GPU Boost, I decided to just go with the SC2 (plus I liked the way it looks with 2 fans). For someone like me, the Strix is a hard sell because it's more expensive and didn't have features that interested me as much.

    • @JPG126
      @JPG126 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I really disagree with that way of thinking.
      Another example of it is something like: 'Well if you can afford to go on holiday with your family, then you can afford to finally get rid of that old car of yours'.
      Just because you can 'afford' one thing, doesn't mean you have another bunch of money laying around for something else.
      The vast majority of people in the developed world have budgets for almost everything they buy, especially in regards to computer set ups.
      If you have a $2000 PC budget, then a $30 difference on a GPU DOES MATTER. Thats the difference between a very good CPU cooler and an 'ok' one, or the difference between two SSD capacities, or the difference between a locked intel CPU and an unlocked (k) CPU.

    • @37Kilo2
      @37Kilo2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to preorder the FTW 3, direct from EVGA, at $750 over a month ago... not sure why it's now $780.
      That aside, yes, $30 can sway a lot of people (myself included) especially if you are building a new system and/or have a set budget. Every dollar counts the higher the total cost goes. If that $30 gives you significant performance, then it might be worth it, but, in this case, I don't see how spending an extra $30 helps people in any way (well, maybe the customer service... that could be worth the added cost).

    • @larock0wns
      @larock0wns 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's like saying, you are paying $30,000 for a car, what''s another $1,500 for the Nav Package? You setup a PC Build budget for a reason. So while $30 seems like nothing, that $30 could be applied towards better drive, psu, motherboard, etc.

    I'm still happy with the FTW3 vs the Strix. Asus's CS and warranty is nothing compared to EVGA's, plus it would seem the Strix has some fairly bad coil whine issues. From what I have seen almost 1 in every 2 Strix cards has that issue...not something I want to deal with.

    • @MsChubble

    • @soulshot96
      @soulshot96 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If this is a response to the coil whine bit, your fan speed has absolutely nothing to do with coil whine.
      Also, I can't really hear my FTW3 fans at 50% fan speed either lol.

    • @soulshot96
      @soulshot96 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Coil whine is still very dependant on the model and quality of the capacitors used. Why do you think coil whine is such a big issue with so many FE cards? Same with the Asus. It's fairly common on specific cards for a reason.

    • @dennis-br6vr
      @dennis-br6vr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      a card wont get coil whine when the capacitors are good quality.

    So this begs to question, any chance we'll see an SC Black vs SC2 comparison or blurb? :) On the surface, it appears they both have the same cooler and same clock, same reference design - the SC2 just adds the sensors and RGB lighting instead of white only for the SC?

    Finally someone has intelligent methodology comparing (normalizing) by dBA output! I was so waiting for this. Comparisons based on % fan speed need to stop, it is dumb - the fans have different shapes and different dBA at different % speed and also the max rpm of cards differs - other reviewers take notes from Gamer Nexus.

    You should include examples of sounds produced when game is played couple of hours in NIGHT time. For example by recording sounds by microfone. Because sometime fans produces noise on 'bad' frequency. So it can be silent, but if you play in the night, it makes you tired and irritate

      @johnathonm7813 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Julatz Schmulatz if he was after over clocking then I would recommend the evga and do a hybrid mod like GN did as that way you can monitor temps for the overclock
      I bought a Asus Turbo 1080Ti and put a Morpheus II cooler on it. It’s quiet at Low rpm with my two ML120 fans and I only hit max temp 46 degrees at stock 1911mhz @.893v
      My only issue is I can’t measure the vram and vrm temps hence my recommendation for the evga model.
      OptimumTech did a great video comparing the two custom coolers on the evga - I recommend having a look

      hey ICY i just bought my asus code board and wanted to ask a quick question well maybe two as support cant seem to answer it, one do the leds on the motherboard when set to white seem to have a greenish blue glow to them for you or are they bright white? mine have a weird hue, second, are you using an AIO liquid cooler? when i have my corsair H100VI plugged into the cpu optional header the corsair led flickers and im not sure if that port isnt meant to work for it.
      Thanks!

    • @icy0583
      @icy0583 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is because there's only red, blue, and green LEDs in the board. When you want white, it mixes all of the colors to make white. So it is normal.

    • @PrayerZero
      @PrayerZero 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ugh do you know if the formula is any different in terms of the LED lights? and might i ask if you use an AIO

    • @icy0583

      No, you can't really change the LED color when they're already installed in your mobo. (I use the NZXT Kraken x62) I normally use the blue breathing and the blue/purple tai chi in my aio.

    Great video and thank you for all the benchmarking and numbers. Though, two measeruments aren't much valid:
    50% and 100% fan speed as different fans have different speeds, and more importantly they have different airflow (cooling effect). So more reliable and comparable would be measing at certain volume of air going through - and that I guess isn't worth the effort, since it still doesn't tell much.
    So maybe instead I would go for noise+temperatures at certain high as possible frequencies - which should produce same heat for dissipation - and either stock or best possible curve -> to really compare the fans/cooling possibilities (temperature vs noise).

    I chose a pair of these to replace 3 980 TI(s) in Nvidia surround setup because 1) they're the only 2 slot top-end aftermarket 1080 TI which greatly helps with cooling in SLI; 2) EVGA has the best CS of any card manufacturer; 3) I can get advanced replacement RMA service from EVGA if one breaks; 4) the factory warranty transfers to next owner which makes selling my old EVGA 980 TI cards easy; I am able to recoup some of my investment when upgrading. The above for me far outweighs a fw db in sound difference which I can't hear outside the case anyway. This comparison really is doomed from the start as you can't compare a 2 1/2 slot card to a 2 slot card and call it an accurate comparison. The fact that EVGA is only a few db louder with such a large reduction in heat-sink surface area is a testament to the engineering & build quality inherent in the FTW. If the FTW was a 2 1/2 slot card I expect the results would be different... I do like the fan headers on the ASUS Strix though. That was a nice addition, especially if you can control them from the OC Software...

    So now that the Gaming x card is 850, the strix is the best card to buy. I sold my Evga 1080 ti SC Black Edition because it was a loud card. If all the 1080 ti preform the same, then temps. And noise are more important to me.

    You know, (and I believe I'm not the only one) why hasn't any GPU manufacturer offered a custom water cooling card that is w/o the fans and heat sinks? I mean cost wise they wouldn't lose any more money since they won't have to add the cost of the heat sink, fans and the weight for the shipping.

    Would there be any value locking to a temperature, and measuring dB? Basically the inverse of what you just did here.

    • @sudd3660
      @sudd3660 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      its basically has the same value, just lock one of the variable and you make a better and practical review.
      but with the limitation of noise measurement they have it might be better to use relative high db target.
      then they can use the same db at more low power cards and still be in range of the db meter.

      That's basically what they do ALREADY when testing noise. The max temp is usually about 82degC. Even if there's a small difference between cards I don't think it would make much difference due to how BOOST works.

      Now that makes it ant valid. Their marketing to an incredibly small subset of users. Also not to mention those same people would modify the hardware anyways. Are there any bios mods which will just allow us to force a fixed clock speed when the card is handling 3D content? For example with the GTX 900 series cards, it was rather simple to disable the boost 2.0 function, raise the power limit, bump the voltage slightly, and then set the card to 1500MHz and have that clock speed regardless of the game.

    MSI's cards have allways been cooler than all the others at low fan rpm, resulting in the quitetest card of them all. also the exact frequency noise the fans generate are a more comfortable sound than other fans, so when your chart says it is 1dB lower, in real life its experienced like maybe 4dB really.

    I wouldn't say that Aorus Extreme is the least favourable as buying one gets you 4 years of warranty compared to 3 years given by other manufacturers (if I remember correctly Zotac only gives 2 years of warranty on their cards). Also in Europe its cheaper than Asus by about $25-50. The only thing that I don't like on Aorus is that it's bigger than the rest (3 slots vs 2.5).

    Hey GN! I have a few questions about GPU temps. I tried looking through the article and maybe I missed it, but I was wondering what resolution you do your temperature tests at, or even resolution even matters in the first place. I'm curious because I recently got a Zotac 1080ti AMP edition (not extreme), and my temps in BF1 and GTA V at 4K Ultra usually settle at 80c with 80% fan speed. Considering I had a 1080 FE before this that achieved basically identical thermals and noise, I was expecting a bit more out of an aftermarket card. Are these thermals just normal for 4K Ultra? Or would cards like the Gaming X and Strix OC have lower temperatures? Thanks!

    and people dont believe me when i tell my gpu when OCed to 2126 mhz runs at 69c (at 23c ambient), dis a 1080 tho, not the ti. not only does Asus's cooler perform amazingly, it simply just looks amazing (: that is ofc objective. with fans at 1800rpm (49% i think). this is after 5 hours of a stabilitytest :P ive since just set it to 2000 mhz just cause of ocd, and well, its like a 1% performance difference. just to top it all off tho, (this was at black friday ofc, when the 1080 prices were higher) for 620 bucks outside of the US. aint got a single complain about this card, Asus really nailed the 10 series cards (or the strix). Keep up the goodcontent GN, basically the only tech channel i watch anymore.

      @dangdiggity9916 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      if everything youre after is a 1080, it probably wont matter much which one you go with, and i totally would get the price differences and how they matter more. i have yet to see another 1080 go for lower than what i paid for mine durring black friday (even today) unless its the cheaper models on sales, in my country :P 470 usd sounds amazing tho! i myself care a bit too much about looks and cooling so for me personally, i'd pay the full price(after the 1080 price reduction, its now at a 725 usd) for the strix if i had to :P price of being into case modding and overclocking i guess ;D

      I'm not sure if Gigabyte made too many or what, but they're selling both teh G1 1070 and 1080 over here for considerably less than every other 3 fan competitor. Matching founders edition pricing

      just double checked, and gigabyte actually do have a model that is 680 usd, thats not bad at all! its far from 470, but way lower than 725 so! the cheapest atm is a palit at like 640 bucks :P but thats a dual fan one, not to mention the area of the 'lower' quality ones :P

    I am curious if the MSI GTX 1080 Ti Sea Hawk X would perform better than these cards. I've heard there is a coil whine on some of them. Is that on all of those cards or just some that were produced incorrectly. Are there any other AIO cards out there for GTX 1080 Ti?

    • @sudd3660
      @sudd3660 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think at 40 db sea hawk could perform better, but pure db measurement would not account for how pleasant a noise is, only loudness, coil whine or pump noise or radiator turbulence adds more variables.
      but seriously 40 db is quite loud, 20 db is silent, 30 db is ok for some people living in a noisy environment and 30 db is within range of gamers nexus testing. 40 seem like a bad choise
