Update on other GPUs for memory upgrades. I am currently working on a 3060 Ti to upgrade it to 16GB. Other 3000 series are work in progress. A BIOS edit would be required to double the memory on these GPUs. Once the 3060 Ti is completed a video with step by step process will be uploaded. RTX 4000 series cannot be upgraded as they all use 2GB modules and are the highest capacity modules produced to date. GPUs that can be upgraded are 3060Ti, 3070, 3080 10GB, 3080 12GB, and 3080 Ti from the 3000 lineup. The 3000 series is a work in progress starting with the 3060 Ti. Don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell to get notified when the video is released.

What is the price on that upgrade? U should simply make a video before after performance and compare performance to 4000 series.

My setup is more suited for repairs as i use older hardware. For example my CPU is i7 3rd gen. Older hardware works well with the testing software needed for repairs. Since i am also getting into upgrade i do intend to have a benchmarking setup with the latest hardware (CPUs, GPUs etc.) so i can pitch it against each other. Until i can afford to set this up I ill try and make a basic comparison in my future videos like before and after kind of thing. 😁

It supposedly is a much faster processor and needs higher speed to function properly. My opinion? Yeah, it would be awesome if we could add VRAM by switching sticks or something.

The 2080 Ti came out with a fairly optimal memory config, but cards like the 3060 Ti, 3070 and 3080 10GB are prime candidates for this kind of upgrade, as they can much more readily utilize the extra RAM. Still awesome that you're able to do this at all, of course.

Not sure why this popped up in my recommendeds, but watching this is giving me nightmares of doing manual rework on prototype surface mount boards back in the day, which I was *very* aware were worth more than my annual salary at the time - I was told to take as much time as I needed for that run, since the premium was very much on precision & not killing components or boards. Talk about stressful!! On the upside, to my knowledge, I never killed anything. Nice bonus at the end of that run too! :)

one reason to have more vram on an older card is so that you can do 3D animation rendering with it. GPU based 3D rendering requires you to load the model into VRAM for each card so the amount of VRAM becomes a limit to the complexity of scene that you can render. more VRAM equals more complex scenes. You can also use multiple cards and split which cell they render to improve render times but you cannot stack VRAM so having more VRAM is very helpful. keep up the good work.

If you are wondering about the memory upgrade and why someone would want this , it does allow play at higher resolution for gaming. Most importantly tho , it allows multiple graphic intensive processes to run at once. This benefits Virtual machines , 3d modeling , game developers , and video editors. Even with multiple monitors this will make a difference.

Very impressive! My question is: How did you know what to do ? From where? Could you tell more about "straps" ? What are they? For what? What are they doing? What exactly did you set to high. You are VERY VERY underrated. To change the chips is easy for you and all people who have to do with those kind of repairs but your knowlegde is much more interesting to me. In any case more knowledge than I have 🙂

All information about straps is available in the schematic of the GPU. It also mentions how the configuration should be. For example 1 stands for high and 0 stands for low and M strands for medium. 1 connects 100k resistor to 1.8v, for 0 the resistor is connected to ground. As you play around you will get the hang of it. Start reading schematics it's fun. It gives a lot of insights.

I have here one Radeon VII who quit service some years ago. The only thing I have done at this time, is to install a new driver. I always uninstall the older version, before.
I had asked the official support from AMD here in Germany, and they were very interested in that. They told me I should send this card to the service. I think I'll use this option for the first time.
And when they say they cannot make anything, or repair, then I'll ask this technician. He's absolutely amazing. Such detailed knowledge, I wonder 🧐🤔 where he did got this learned.

I wanted to buy a Puhui T8280 but I saw a video of a russian dude doing GPU reball with a IR cooking plate and I tried to do it myself.
It's very efficient for GPUs but not good with big PCB boards like ATX Motherboards because those need a big heating surface (the board flexes / wrap so bad when the temperature is not uniform on the whole board).

It's hard to say if it's worth it for gaming, ie, 12GB is close to recommended 16GB min, but I do remember a Hardware Unboxed vid where extra memory allowed the textures to full form, ie, not enough memory and they are rough blob renders. They even showed a GPU render properly when started, but after 20min it ran out of memory and the pic became worse. Basically it's the cost, like is the $300 swap ok for a 10% better appearance in games.

    • @GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql
      @GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

As of now, RTX 4090 cannot be upgraded beyond 24GB of VRAM. Micron GDDR6X is only available in 2GB modules in 21Gbps and 24Gbps. Though it is possible to install 24Gbps modules (supported) to increase the bandwidth however the capacity cannot be increased.
The returns on investment in upgrading from 21Gbps to 24Gbps modules will be negligible and benefit minimal (It is a theory based on calculations and yet to be tested though.) If in the future I get my hands on a 4090 and a user is willing, I will put this to the test and measure the difference in performance.
If in the future Nvidia launches an RTX 4090 Ti or a 5090 it will be launched with the 24Gbps modules. (Speculation)
It's the same with 7900XT or XTX. 7900 XT and XTX use GDDR6 memory and the bandwidth of each module is 20Gbps. Samsung is sampling a 24Gbps memory but it is still sampled and not mass-produced. So for 7900 XT and XTX we are using the top possible memory.

The GDDR6X 3060Ti trace connection on the PCB are different. GDDR6X will not work work on GRRD6 PCB. pin out layout is different. Data pins layout is not the same.

@@GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql Ah I did not know that! Since I use the same stencil for re-balling GDDR6 and GDDR6X. But the ball pinout having a different data layout is a deal breaker! But regarding your original idea, I think it would be a waste of VRAM, since GDDR6X has already been proven to make no performance difference against the Samsung HC14 chips, let alone HC16 which is still slower than GDDR6X D8BGW at 19Gbps. And HC16 is so expensive for me, I'm careful with it LOL

I would to have this done to a 3080, to go from 10GB to 20GB of VRAM. That would make a real 4K high settings gaming GPU out of one that never had enough VRAM from new. I have nothing close to the knowledge or skill to pull this off.

I hope you like this video 😁. Yes, you will require skills to replace memory. but skill is built over time with practice. If you start to practice (starting with dead boards) you will build the required skill over time.

getting a 3090 is still probably better, 2080ti with the chips would cost 450€ and if u get a 3090 for 600€ u have a newer card, pcie 4.0, gddr6x, 2gb more, 32bit bigger bus, better performance overall

3090 went up in price last time I checked. 2080ti and 3080 have gone down. The 2080ti has much lower power draw, undervolts to 150w easily and still fast in stable diffusion. Priced could change a lot once next gen drops. I would do 2080ti if you were to run it for long sessions or go with 4000 series. 3090 is a good option too if you aren't too concerned about power usage. The repair guy games its possible on the 3080 as well.

Unfortunately none of the 40 series can be upgraded. It already uses 2GB memory modules which is the highest capacity produced on GDDR6X platform. It also has only 12 memory slots.

Yes games are not gona even touch all the memory but Mining, ohh boy with all that fast memory etherium based algorythms gona love it. AI, rendering, folding, modeling, moding is going to be great. After all just the that flex on unlocking the full potential of a GPU is worth seeing.
