As long as the card is fixed and works. The leds can go to hell. Not like the leds will give you more fps.
the only important information on my ASUS ROG Strix 3090 is gpu, memory and hotspot temperatures max temps (42/62/52).
I removed the led fan cooler at day 1 and replaced it with a watercooler and active backplate.
Yeah god know they could use those leds in hell
also i would like to remind you that LEDs are heating when working, so without LEDs card will be cooler
@@loonywalker6729 entire 0.1c cooler lel
The reason why it appears that there's something wrong with the LED lighting is that there is a defect on the translucent tubing where they get cloudy over time and do not transmit light easily. The translucent tubing would need to be replaced. There is nothing wrong with the LEDs themselves
Yes thats true. Because there are only 2 RGB LED on a single PCB on the back of the fan housing and 2 tubes that emits the light from the back to the front on these Stix Cards.
i would not bother since 1080 ti has a ten year life span and only has 4 years left they are leds not going to kill your performance , i would just either sell it and use money for replacement or run it to the ground.
Yep. This was a problem with the early asus strix cards, later on they fixed the issue
yes.. i had 3 exact same 1080ti for repair, and 2 of them had the same problem after repair, the tubing got old.. it looks like the tubing has a clear wrap and a clear tube inside.. and they got kinda separated.. i think that is the problem. I dont know if there is spare tubing somewhere, since it is special to glow on all directions, not only the end like a fiber optic cable
2070 from asus has the same :/
The LEDs are fine it's just the fiber optics cable that runs through the front plate went opaque over time because of heat, changing the fiber optics cable fixes this issue, this card uses 4mm cables.
that's true, i fixed mine just like that, i bought 4mm cable and replaced it's an easy job you don't need to open the card eather
Morning Coffee whilst watching northwestrepair, makes one believe anything is possible.
These ads are getting out of hand i had to wait 2mins to watch my favorite gpu guru
My adblock extension still works on my desktop for firefox browser. No problems what so ever, but on my cell phone they bypass my adblockers
Couple of days ago youtube removed options for skipable ads.
I always had skipable ads ON so you dont get annoyed but i cannot do it anymore.
No one can. Its no longer an option.
@@northwestrepair gotta love google, there is still skippable ads, just can't disable non skippable ads
Newpipe/gray jay time.
Ublock origin continues to work with Firefox.
I have a MSI AIO 360mm with LED's. I ran a program called Signal RGB. It mad some of the LEDs to not work anymore. Even after uninstalling that program and installining the right program. It still didn't work. It took running my computer multiple tim3svand suddenly after a update. Everything started working again. You hooking up two GPUs told me that the owner has something on his computer that is causing this kind of very strange behavior.
I just wanted to share that with you because you have given so much to us. Its only fair to share knowledge. Thank You for your program and going out of your way to help others to maybe start a better life down the road for themselves!.?
Loving all the 1080TI content! Best card ever created! can’t get enough of them lol I own 4
Your troubleshooting skills are top notch sir.
I own this exact card.. Still going strong! It gets new thermal paste & pads every year.
Absolute legend!!! Tell to eveyone you know and they like PC/GPU stuff and like electronics, about this guy!! You deserve much more subscribers than some other!!
I own one of this. I think is the best graphics card ever created. I LOVE mine. Mine is been working perfectly for 6 years.
Such an entertaining video......... This is why you are the Kwisatz Haderach from Dune.........of all time...... Thanks.....
LED light is normal.. you need to replace the optical fiber 4mm diameter
Screw it. I'll let the owner deal with that.
yup same problem with my Strix 1060, I had to buy $5 of optic side glow fibre and it is now like new.
i just love watching people fixing stuff 😍and the gpus are really fascinating for me as a dev and a gamer , and recently started to go deep on learning electronics , thanks a lot for your content dude , and since you're not an electronic engineer you give us hope 💪to keep learning new stuff :D
I ran 2 of these in SLI for a few years. They were fabulous cards. I have since sold them and they are being used by new owners still. I have a couple of Kingpin 980Ti's I used to run in SLI also but they went dead (I used them to mine) I wouldn't mind getting those repaired so I can repurpose them. Seems such a shame to throw away such wonders of tech.
Hi there @northwestrepair great video as always, keep it up. After seeing the references to NRF (which made me smile :)) I have to say that Alex is not the right guy to fix GPUs. I think too many people have just put a trust to Alex hoping he's capable of repairing GPUs. Sometimes he is lucky and can fix them but the problem is that he spends way too less time for the inspection, he does not have enough knowledge nor tools to fix GPUs. Even though he is a good electronics technician, he's rather a general one. On the other hand, this is how his business model works. Fixing GPUs is not easy job so the best way is to go to a specialist. It's like choosing between a general doctor and cardiologist, which one would you choose when you have heart problems?
Ty for Fixing !
Love your work man
I appreciate that!
i love your background music, vid and music calm helps me sleep
Great video. Learning more and more with each one.
1080Ti is a great little guy. 👍I found a little more performance in it with FSR and nvidia image scaling and such.
I had one of those. Then I sold it got an Asus ROG 3080. Didn't notice a difference. Lil colder I guess. 😊
Yep. 3080 and 1080ti are about the same
@northwestrepair and I bow out to you sir. Love the work you do. Keep it up. Know who to call for gpu problems! Ballin that core 🙏
@@northwestrepair In what planet is a 3080 the same as a 1080ti? The 1080ti is equivalent to a 2070 super, so it's not even equivalent to a 3060ti.
They are similar in *some* scenarios. But get yourself a new AAA like starfield and 1080Ti will give you like 25FPS vs 3080 55FPS
Hey thanks for the great video! Watching a few, i kinda noticed some ocasional funny "mentions" of some other channel NRF, so curiosity got the best of me and i had to see who it was lol. He seemed ok i guess... What i wondered, having seen your work first, is why he never did for example stress tests. I dunno, somehow his videos ended too fast always, he pointed at a somewhat blured screen, says its a fix, letters appeared, and thats it, its fixed i guess?.I wondered, well, couldnt the card display some issues under stress worth attending...? Maybe he just has too much work, seemed like 50 unsolved cases on his shelf lol
replacing the 4mm side glo tube will fix the led issue, cheap from amazon and takes 10 minutes to do if that, super easy.
Interesting to hear about your experience with that 3060Ti 8GB>16GB mod! Only heard about it being done with 3070 and wondered if anyone would do it to a 3060Ti (which should have had 16GB to start with!). Scammers suck!
Northwestrepair : Something about NRF getting 20 4090s a week . I wonder how many get fixed? Northridgefix : Better than factory))
I wish all those GPUs sent directly to Tony. I like Alex from NRF but he is no GPU expert. His business model is just to take as many devices as he can and fix those who he thinks are profitable for him.
great work as always !
Nice repair! Almost everything connected to 5v buck converter received 12 volts apparently
I have asus 1080 ti strix, and SU101 chip also has "burning" mark on it. I was concerned that it may overheats, so I put 2x3mm thick thermal pad on it and I also covered PGU1 and SU501 just to be sure, it need at leas 6mm thick thermal pads to get contact on heating fins.
Only problem that I have with the card is that the memory can't run at its full speed, so I need to underclock it -350 MHz in MSI afterburner to not get crash and artifacts in games. In MATS memory test there is no errors :/. Otherwise, card is really great, low noise, I also undervolted it and lower the core clock to 1709 Mhz ant 0.8V and temps never gets above 40 C.
I also need to replace light tube for RGB LEDs to work properly.
The "burning mark" is a marker pen and it's there from the factory. Indicates that the chip was programmed.
@@DIYRepairHour Hm, wierd because i tried to clean it with alchohol & acetone but no luck.
thank you
half-working led light is not a problem, it will not affect the performance of gpu )
also i would like to remind you that LEDs are heating when working, so without LEDs card will be cooler.
Just got a 1650 LP in that is having a no power issue. Only thing I can see is a nick on the card on one of the data lines. Cool thing is that eBay issued the refund and told me I could keep the item, so now I get to see if I can revive it.
Power issues ?
Is it able to boot, but you get spikes ?
Could be PSU too, check the card in other system that has 1k watt PSU please, same there ?
@@lucasrem It a low profile PCIe powered card. This is a known good test bench. Known good GPUs work fine on it. Also, the issue follows the card if I put in other systems. It's definitely the card.
Nice video! How many EVGA you re balled GPU and VRAM?
From what I gathered MSI is kind on a first place on re balling, but is just my opinion.
There are only 2 leds at the ends and a long diffusor.
The rgb controller wasnt broken at all.
the LED strip is shortcutted, so the card is damaged
I love your stuff
just vatching enjoyable stuff!
Hey Tony, what's that core always sitting up at the top of the screen by the copper wick? Is it a good luck charm? 🤔
Yeah it's always there waiting for a 3080ti I think.
Not sure.
I think it has several dead memory channels or it's shorted. Gotta check and throw it away already
@@northwestrepair Ahhh, okay. Maybe there's a chance for it yet!
5:40 Richtek uses this weird marking on their regulators, its a RT6220 Synchronous Buck Converter. It is Always XX=MN DNN
I think it's not an led issue but an fiberglass/optic cable or the diffuser is the culprit?
Maybe, i dont know. I dont deal with heatisnks and LED's
You don't use a hot plate? How?? Isn't the ground plane massive on those cards? Is that the Atten 808D or whatever?
Depends on what I do.
Video is trimmed. I took my time to warm it up, trust me.
Hi and thx for the video, how much do you charge for this kind of reparation ? I have a gtx 1080ti that have the same issue....
Awesome video
That Problem of the LED is that, that the LED PCB sits @ the Back of the Cooler and there are only Two LED`s on the PCB. On that LED stick´s an Round Plastic, Acrylic Tube that emittes the Diode Light until the Front of the Card. My Vega 64 is from November 2017 and works the most of Day since then and it Works Perfekt since Day One.
It's a 4 wire RBG, LED strip on the case on the fans, and on the board soldered, owner here.
last owner short circuited the LED's i guess, damaged the casing.
@@lucasrem Read my Text. The RGB IC isn't burned! Ist the Plastic Tube that doesn't fit well! I know while I have a Asus Vega 64 with se same Cooler Design...
@@lucasrem I would Pull away that RGB PCB on the End of the Cooler. That's it...Mostly have RGB in the whole Computer.
Speaking for myself I learned two things today not to trust eBay sellers with Hi-Tech components and not to care about cosmetics on video cards 😅
But who is willing to solder chips ????
muhahahahahaha
Why Ebay ?
So what if some LEDs wont work, I would be happy that the card works if it was my card.
100k!!!! so close!!!
Yes, the dead LED's on that model STRIX-cards is a known problem!
True, last owner shortcutted the RGB on the fan casing.
Very speciffic description and association reffering to this card. Do you have something to tell us ?
6J= is the richtek RT6220
From today's video I've learn that high level of alcohol in the blood ( may be too much IPA was used for cleaning, how I know? ) makes harder to be concentrated on what he is doing even for the really very good GPU Surgeon. And looks like it alsow makes more jelious toward his more succesful colegua.
With all regards.
hy bro, can u make tutorial to make power supply adjustable for the riser
Good work sir

do you have a list of the equipment you use somewhere ie soldering iron specifically

Surprised the economics of repairing a GPU that old still make sense.
May be old but 1080 Ti was a monster card back in the day, so holds pretty well. That, it's iconic status and sentiment for these dictates that their price is still high. Even a broken one these days is > £100 on ebay. And seen them for £250 - £280 and more (working and boxed) on eBay UK.
16:38 didnt expect that
The proper tool to control asus leds is armoury crate, it is a super heavy bloatware garbage. I hate leds so I just unplug the connector from the card.
You like comments and maybe you want to answer to my question :). Is possible that 1.2v cpu and memory controller voltage at xfx rx580 is fault of controler chip ? I have error 43 and memory is ok and i try 20 different bios. Only suspecting at board is high cpu and controler voltage
The easy ones get fixed. no reballs............
I have the same gpu, and I have there the same white screw. Does that come from manufacturer? 🤔
Hi! did you built that power monitor?
I have a 1070 strix
I tried getting a 2070 super strix but couldn't find one so got a aorus

If there was no video to back up the audio monologue, I'd swear I'd say I'm on a Red-Black Pill YT channel (& not on a computer repair one). 🤔😂😜🤓🖒🖒🖒
Turning an 8gb model into a 16gb model requires not only a 16gb bios version, but also that you modify the board ID resistors. You probably already knew, but there is a chance that you didn't so I offer a comment about it.
he said that the chips he tried to use were faulty
@@formbi I heard, but that's just his diagnostic. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's correct. We all make mistakes.
JamesWSleight
In the old days we did that, only if the chip is supporting it. Able to mod the bios too !
Only on new models you do that, Quadro card will do support it in Autodesk etc. GeForce Bios too, in games ?,they sell 16 Gb version ? Same mem config you need, HBM support on it ?

is it really viable for you to reball the gpus (asking because of northridge not worth the time), I know for a fact that you enjoy doing your job more than anyone else
Maybe the big boss is too busy these days 😏😹.
It's not worth reflowing but worth reballing..

🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Why not just drop the working core into that clean donor and call it a day ?
What is the usual / average lifetime of a reballed GPUs? Some are dies after a month?
non of these 1080 cards went dead on use, strix owner here.
great in OLD DELL systems from the same area, getting a 1080p Pro PC for free !
I have a 1080ti FE who died after i repasted it, all i could see when powering it on after repaste was the green led just flash and the card died😢
Can anyone please help me? I have Asus Strix 1080 ti, it seems to work ok with graphics. But the GPU fans do not turn on (even with new ones installed)...theres no power to fans even after hitting 80c+ on card. The solder on connector looks good, but zero fan power at all...Any idea please?
Hi.
Do you know if a Strix 1060 will power on and work without the 8 pin cable inserted? Just for testing purposes.
Thanks.
No, they need it .
Are you sure? Have you tried it?
I'm asking because this card has an extra core phase that runs off of the PCIe 12V ine.@@AyOGroupVe
