Can we take a second to appreciate how lucky we were with the Pascal 10th gen cards? It was right at the beginning of the PC hype that has culminated in the shit-show of 30th gen, the demand was really starting to ramp up, but still production was way more than enough, so people could get pretty much ANY video card, and in the exact version they wanted. One of the biggest increases in performance from one generation to another, all at barely increased price (by today's standards). No scalpers, no shortages, good prices, excellent performance... F in chat for Pascal 10th gen, folks, and for the better days of 2017... T.T
I love mine. It OCs great runs cool. I have it on an open bench so sound is important to me. It is quiet even when it goes to 70% fan. My RAD fans make more noise. This is a beast of a card. 60fps @ 3440x1440p smooth no drops. Stays level. I went from a Evga 780ti to this card and Wow I am one happy gal.
Gigabyte did great this time I guess. This Aorus price is solid and the card build quality is one of the best. However it needs some additional tweak, they made a quiet conservative voltage.
There is 1 Case when it DOES matter. If you are going to Watercool your 1080 TI, then buy a Founders form Nvidia, which have the highest chance of "golden Samples". Custom Cards are literally who has the best cooler...
I've had the Aorus GTX 1080Ti Xtreme for well over a year now & I'm pretty please with it. I REALLY like the all metal construction of that shroud and the accents are just thin enough that they're not too distracting from the rest of my build white & blue themed build inside my Tower 900. It's a decent card & great for actual work too doing entry level video editing & After Effects work.
I went with Strix and I absolutely love the card. I was lucky so no coil whine, it's cool and super quiet. Gigabyte has lost its mind when it comes to the design, there is no elegance at all. I like industrial things, but they totally overdid it this time.
As someone with the STRIX 1080Ti, I LOVE having the headers for the extra fans. The problem with gaming is that the CPU doesn't do much, so getting airflow in the case when the GPU starts getting hot is an issue. Apart from which, if the CPU is busy, then the intake air is also warm. The extra fans help pull extra cold filtered air in and, with a well ventilated case, it maintains positive pressure and keeps temperatures reasonable (I usually see about 66-67C on the card in the case while gaming)
The extra HDMI connection on the Aorus 1080 Ti sold me. Now only if case manufacturers put a HDMI port on a front I/O panel I would have a place to hook up my vive.
I hadn't bought a Gigabyte GPU in several generations; I only got one this time because I lucked out on Newegg the day it launched when all the other cards were still sold out. It is the Aorus Extreme version and it is an absolute beast. I ended up at +75 core +400 mem clock %120 power limit 85°C temp limit. It stays at 2052 Mhz and never went over 62°C. I immediately got a second one and the OC stayed stable with two cards synced with the top card now never going over 66°C, and the bottom card (the first one I got) still around 62°C max. In actuality they both are usually closer to 60°C. Great cards overall, I highly recommend the cards. They are massive 2 1/2 slot cards though so it pays to know they'll fit in advance.
the aorus 1080ti is actually the loudest non-blower 1080ti. if noise doesn't bother you, go for it. if noise bothers you even a little bit, don't even think about it.
Hairforce • headphones reduce the sound etc and I dont mind the jet engine sound of a fan, I played games on a gaming laptop and those things are pretty strong, but not upgradeable, so I will be making my own rig.
Sorry man, but raw performance is exactly what I am looking at when choosing a graphic's card, first and foremost!!! Secondary is cooling, pricing, noise, build quality and aesthetic's in that order. I will take the quieter, better oc'ing Auros over the loud, less performing Strix all day long. And for the record, it wasn't that it just seemed like the Asus was louder, the Strix is way louder than the Auros by over 10%, yet no matter the higher rpm, it only manages one degree cooler at load, which is within the margin of error.
Personally I always had problems with the fans on the card after a few years and this is something which is basically never tested or considered in tests. Well, it is indeed very hard to test. But often cards use similar coolers as predecessors, so it would be possible to make a test that way. But not having this data, I basically made my choice by having the best "workarounds", which left 2 candidates: EVGA: Great reputation, option to extend warranty (paid 40$ for 10 year warranty) and warranty not void if you replace the cooler yourself ASUS Strix: The additional fan connectors Paul mentioned are actually a great way to connect an aftermarket fan My third card of choice would have been a gainward phantom card with replacable fans. But unfortunately they discontinued that line.
EVGA's Step up program ensures they are the only GPU company I will ever buy from. It's the reason I have a 1080ti instead of a 1080. Upgraded my 1080 to a 1080 ICX version which then gave you a 90 day window to step up if anything else released. The 1080ti dropped and I upgraded with just days remaining. Awesome stuff.
As someone who is planning to maybe water cool: I would get the Gigabyte, because there is no stupid warranty void sticker on the cooler screws and the TDP limit can be increased to whopping 150%!
3:35-3:52 what he said is why I went with Sapphire on AMD bought two RX 580's 8GB Sapphire Special Edition's. However Pricing was slightly more expensive then the average RX 580 for good reason's :). RGB, LOOKS/ESTETICS, COOLING AND BUILT QUILTY IS REALLY WELL MADE. Its also one of the fastest performing RX 580's you can get :D ,but that is why its more expensive. Its also one of the best looking RX 580's you can get with the ability to be able to light up.
My Aorus 1080 kind of shook my faith in them - DVI not working out of the box, graphical glitches, terrible support website and then when I sent it back to the shop for RMA, it killed their test rig. Otherwise a very quiet, fast card. And yes, I also hate the orange accents, but in a Ryzen build with argeebees, they look red.
Paul, could you do us one favor when switching back from the Soundmeter to your moderating? Give us a notification, so we can turn down the volume again. Thx and keep up the work!
I hope you're going to start doing sound comparisons between different graphics cards/cpu coolers/case fans. It's hard to find such information, and is greatly appreciated.
I'm a little late to the party, but I think there is one thing paul didn't mention or if he did I missed it. Make sure the card you buy fits! I've seen lots of posts on reddit and build videos on youtube where someone buys a huge graphics card to put in a small case and its either too long or too tall. I just bought a evga ftw3 3080 and although I have a phanteks enthoo evolv which is a big case I had to move my pump/res up to the next set of holes on my radiator because the card was so long it wouldn't fit. Just remember that if you have custom cooling or if you have a small form factor case!
When comparing the sound of the Fans it'd be far more useful to show the fans at the same RPM rather than a % of the max. And just throw a mention to the maximum speeds of the two cards after.
I really gotta go with the one that is cheaper and less loud. That way you can carefree set it higher VS the more expensive card, and there's more experienced performance. I think what i wrote makes the most sense, but hey - prices worldwide are different so who cares.
Cards are generally the same performance your choosing a cooling, Vrm, etc design. Performance will be within 5% but temperatures will vary. Maybe 10% versus founders editions.
I had Aorus GTX 1080ti for 5 or 6 days and returned it to the shop because the temperatures in Witcher 3 2160p were 79-80 degrees and the fans speed was 80% - that is a pretty bad cooling solution if you want a silent and not very hot card to play in 4K in your case (not an open stand). I bought Asus Strix instead and the difference is so huge - Witcher 3 in 4K can push this card only up 71 degrees at max OC and 45% fans speed. Without OC it runs at 67-68 degrees. So there is big a difference between these 2 cards actually.
NotProGaming you should, asus dont cool vrm, aorus does, vrm is hottest place in card, so aorus just take temps from vrm and add it to gpu and after that cool everything. Asus hads cool gpu, but vrm can heat up to 100C, check guru 3d temps picture if you want proof, what is better cooler gpu and hotter vrm or cooler vrm but hotter gpu:i dont know, vrm is made to live in big temps, but there can be issues with burned mosfets, but its very rear stuff. I go with asus.
I have bought Aorus and temps in custom OC is 69-79C but when fans are at 80-100% temps are 61-69. But my stable OC limit is very low (depends from runned game, not every game is stable on specified OC)
i was geting 82 c + with aorus even 100% fans at at 99% usage for long its f volcano the card and that backplate is way hotter than any other card if u run air cooled cpu expect + 20 c temps
I think it's pointless to buy cards with original cooling(unless you building small pc and you need blower style cooler on videocard), because it's a lot harder to clean, it's lower clocked by default and the cooler itself isn't that great. Why not spend additional $20-$30 for a card with better cooler?
Waterblock availability might be something to check out too? that was one of the selling feature of my GTX 1080... the fact it was a binned for performance, custom PCB and both EK and Bitspower had custom waterblocks for it
One of the things that put me off the Strix is the VRM and VRAM cooling solution. I know it's just my paranoia but having no direct contact from the heatsink to the VRAM and VRM bothered me. Asus did the same thing with the 980Ti Matrix, I was shocked to find the card had no cooling on the VRAM and only a small plate on the VRM.
SUPER! Im gettin my ASUS STRIX 1080TI tomorrow and just cant wait, great video helped me, at least just in the end when you said that IF the price is not an issue (it's not) the asus strix is a winner, very exited to see what the beast can perform, currently have 780TI SLI :) thanks and peaceout
I had two 1080Ti FE's and sold them both for two Aorus Ti's purely for the cooling, price and availability. The Nvidia FE's were so loud and so hot they were unusable for overclocked 4K/60 Ultra gaming in SLI. Even when I tried with headphones they were too loud. Much prefer the more "silent" approach of triple fans.
I got the Zotac gtx 1080ti AMP Etreme core active... and i hate it... coil whine a lot and loud, also random fans issues with them revving up to 100% randomly even when there is no load on them... also i cant change Fan speed myselfs, it just wont let me, if i make the fanspeed to 100% nothing happens, the card just ignores it. Also there is a problem with overclocking, i cant get higher than 1999mhz, if i go higher it just wont let me, numbers wont change . God i need to return it fast and get something else... im done with Zotac...
I ended up with the EVGA FTW3, it was longer than the spec sheet said though so ended up having to move my radiator to get it to fit in a mini ATX. The end results were still great though.
Really bought the Aorus version because of the 3 DP ports instead of 2 and because of it's availability. Most other GTX 1080ti's are really expensive but not the Aorus version.
some venders do the binned gpus. every party has their own designation though. Asus for example uses the "OC" designation. In the past it was the "TOP' series. Generally meaning those cards where good overclockers and carried the price reflecting so.
Really love the Asus FanConnect headers and I will definitely struggle on my next GPU upgrade if no other manufacturer implemented a feature like that.
I have 4 Asus Ti Turbo's and 5 Gigabyte Founders. The ALL at least hit or max out at 2000 to 2050 Mhz on the core and 5800 - 6000 Mhz on the Memory. All done on Air using MSI Afterburner. 110-115% on power limit, 150-175 Mhz on core, and 600-1000 on memory for any card i've OC'd. No increase on core voltage was needed.
Have not watched the whole video but can answer the title: because this video came out today at 10 PM! I ordered at 1 AM today! AND THESE WERE THE CARDS I WAS CONSIDERING! DAMN YOU, PAUL!
The Aorus GTX 1080 Ti, has ZERO sag in my setup, with reinforced PCIe Slots. Also almost all 1080 Ti, overclock to almost the same Core clocks. Example my current Aorus can hit same level of OC as Xtreme Edition 1080ti. Maybe I won the lottery? I just feel all 1080 Ti are at their limit. Both thermal and voltage, and FPS difference between all of them are unable to be noticed.
I found used models at the exact same price but went with the AORUS @ $550 US. I liked the metal design a bit better and the 5 video ports...2 HDMI and 3 DPs as well as the better speeds? Hope I made the right choice lol Oh and there was 1 Strix at the same price but I still chose the AUROS.
Well, while Founders looks cool, it it severely handicapped by weak cooling and OC-ing is kind of out of the question. I want my card to look cool AND perform as good as possible.
I'm about to return my Zotac 1080ti AMP because it runs way too hot at temperatures of 85°-90°, which is awful. I'll be buying a different one, and I have to choose among these two or the EVGA one.
I went with the EVGA FTW3 solely (!!) because of the AIO water cooling. I'm not ready to custom cool and I wasn't interested in dumping 60 C heat into the case.
This is just like when the original 1080 and the 1070 came out... everyone was searching for "the best card", but there is only very small differences between them. The only real differences is the designs and the colours.
I'm sorry I don't understand how you recommend the Asus one over the Gigabyte considering is 60$ more and aesthetics a pretty subjective. You even say the Gigabyte is better built! Money might not be an issue but I'm pretty sure people have better charitable causes than Asus
For me its mostly about cooling and aesthetics and if it's OC'd from the factory then its a no brainer I'd buy it in a heartbeat, that is if i had the money for it.. anyways great video as always paul!
Gigabyte Aorus 1080ti in my opinion looks better with a slight orange color since it fits my setup. The Strix is overrated. To be fair, both have the same performance and the same temp. Only difference is 1-2 fps and thats about it. They both look good. It's all up to you're taste. Both are powerful high-end graphic cards so keep that in mind.
I couldn't be bothered with overclocking, fancy lighting, case windows, brand name etc. so I only buy on price and price alone. In my country, that often means Galax, sometimes EVGA or MSI. I've never had the slightest problem with any of them thus far and I've used all three brands for years now. Asus & Gigabyte are both usually stupidly overpriced, especially when it comes to graphics cards. In the mobo market, there's very little to choose between any of them. Just buy the one that tickles your fancy.
You can find EVGA FTW3 reviews over at Gamers Nexus and JayzTwoCents. Spoiler alert, they are just as fast as all the other 1080Ti high end cards, with no extra overhead to overclock.
larock0wns while that is true, it's also worth it because of the fact that its EVGA; extremely long guarantee, customer support is flawless, build quality is supreme, and if your card malfunctions, they will send you a better version
I don't disagree. I was just referencing performance. You will only be picking out these cards based on price, looks, extras and how you feel about the company. Performance is irrelevant on these cards, since they are all the same
in gn 1080ti results when gpus oced, asus and gigabyte cards tend to lower their 1 and 0.1 percent fps while both evga models did not. So, it is important factor to consider as well.
In my opinion, it just isn't worth spending more on a GPU then the base cost of it. If you really need lower temps, just turn the fan up to about 60-70%. you prob wont even notice the difference so long as you don't have it right next to your head. Granted there is the one scenario of if you live in a vary hot environment. I could kinda see it then.

Why not spend additional $20-$30 for a card with better cooler?
i have had the waterforce 1080ti for 3 years now and had no problems at all . i have the one with the external water block .
All about the FPS for me and the AORUS wins this race
This is the video I was looking for, the 2 monsters head to head. Thanks Paul!
Did u try turning it off and on?
sadly yes
i even peed on it to show dominance
That comment made my day!
Hmmm did you try setting it to Wumbo?
plug your fans directly to our psu with resistors :P set to 1300rpm and you are set.
I have an aorus xtreme model and it consistently boosts to 2150 mhz with power slider maxed and sits around 74 C°
The reason the clock speed is highly on the strix is because paul failed to mention he has the OC edition of the strix.
No increase on core voltage was needed.
chancey1979 my evga ftw3 clocks to 2136 mhz on water.
Hope I made the right choice lol Oh and there was 1 Strix at the same price but I still chose the AUROS.
great shoot out paul your generosity will not go unpunishec
Along with the “jrgb” header, it has 2 fan headers that are pwm and can be directly tied to the cards temperature……..smart.
The new design for gigabyte's aorus branding is horrible.
I agree !
Frankly, I haven't seen a single 10 series card (other than the founder's) that I would buy based on aesthetics alone.
Well, while Founders looks cool, it it severely handicapped by weak cooling and OC-ing is kind of out of the question. I want my card to look cool AND perform as good as possible.
I bought the Aorus and I like the colors and design. When the LEDs are on you do not see the color of the card at all. I like it.
I personally couldn't care less about the RGB bullshit and I really really don't like the shourd on Aorus (the X over the fans mostly).
I got the Asus Strix 1080ti, AND IT IS MASSIVE, i had gigabyte 980 ti windforce before it, but there is no comparison in the quality of the cards.
This is just like when the original 1080 and the 1070 came out... everyone was searching for "the best card", but there is only very small differences between them. The only real differences is the designs and the colours.
Thanks Paul, very useful comparison! Nice job 👍🏻
I'm sorry I don't understand how you recommend the Asus one over the Gigabyte considering is 60$ more and aesthetics a pretty subjective. You even say the Gigabyte is better built! Money might not be an issue but I'm pretty sure people have better charitable causes than Asus
i agree, probably sponsored by Asus :)
He said "if price is no object." He recommended the Aorus if you want to pay less and you're fine with the color scheme.
Paul got friends there at Asus. So yeah.
Strix looks good, Auros looks like crap. And since this is internet, your opinion doesn't matter and everyone should go on with that information.
i think he was more pointing out if your going to spend that kind of money on this card 60$ is chump change for the preference
1990 just called, said they want their soulpatch back.
I wanted to say, "meow" to this, but then realized your picture was a cat and thought that the meaning might be lost if I did.
For me its mostly about cooling and aesthetics and if it's OC'd from the factory then its a no brainer I'd buy it in a heartbeat, that is if i had the money for it.. anyways great video as always paul!
I usually go for EVGA due to the warranty. I got a Zotac GTX480 once for $400 and it died weeks outside the 3 year warranty
Aorus FTW I went back and forth and finally cannot the beauty of the Aorus 1080ti Extreme Edition GPU. Thanks again Paul.
Please do Zotac 1080Ti Amp Extreme vs EVGA FTW3.
Performance is irrelevant on these cards, since they are all the same
not if you have a 144hz or 200hz refresh monitor without g sync
Zotac is faster
You forgot to add warranty period as a key deciding factor.
Thanks for the review, it answers my exact question.
in gn 1080ti results when gpus oced, asus and gigabyte cards tend to lower their 1 and 0.1 percent fps while both evga models did not. So, it is important factor to consider as well.
Both nice but I prefer the hot air outside the box so it is an FE for me.
Well this really convinced me to go for the Asus Strix 1080ti. Thanks a bunch Paul! :)
1080Ti Strix and Strix Mobo in my rig. Not disappointed.
how about coil whine?
2022 used 1080ti 650eu :D
I got a 1 year old one for 600 eur 💪🥵
Based on this review I choose the aorta because of the VR connections
That Coil whine on the ASUS though...
Emanuel Vitorino not on mine.
the aorus had more whine than asus poseidon i run now its luck though pushing clocks to the limit of oc makes it worst over time
That wasnt coil whine
Great video very informative as always. Thanks :)
Orange accents luckily won't bother me... Building in a dark base pro 900 ;)
Great review though Paul :)
If this video was made today, the choice is simple: whatever is in stock, preferably at a price that's not quite twice the rrp.
