Thank you. I am a maintenace (woman) for an apartment building which was built in 1937. I started replacing a broken glass expecting wooden trim that would need to be nailed back on and caulked and well, I found window glaze. Had NO idea what it was but it looked much like the window you just worked on there. It just fell out without tools almost, but then I said "Uh Oh, how and what do I use to put the new glass back in? Thank you, you have just saved my new job that I waited 6 months for lol.
Thanks for the video. I'm re-glazing over 30 60+ year old steel casement windows. I've never re-glazed windows before. Did alot of internet research. Many suggested making the glazing compound into a "snake" & using your fingers to compress it into the muntin. However, I preferred your method of keeping it in a ball in your hand & "feeding" it out using the putty knife. I also located the bent putty knife at Home Depot-it's called a glazier's tool & has a 2nd tool on the other end. Thanks again!

thx for the note here and good question. i have never seen or heard of tinted glazing, that would be a big time saver though. casement windows have metal wire clips holding in the glass usually. be careful not to break them when removing the old glazing. thx, eric.
i'm currently in the process of overhauling a room in my house and the last item on the list is the windows, but before i can do anything i have to replace the glazing. this video is the first and only video i needed to watch in order to learn how to do it! excellent job!
hey thanks for the kind words. glazing is hard, the compound has to be moist, if not, moisten it with linseed oil.

thanks for your comment. verticals are done the same way, but its just more awkward. not sure about bedding of putty on the wood trim side, Bob does not do that.

I've been trying to restore a window that's in miserable condition- replaced all the glass, cleaned it up, sanded, primed it... set new glazing points in place... now I'm trying to glaze, and am having a miserable time working with the DAP puddy- I tried to grab a bunch and work it like dough, but it just sticks to my hands- but I was trying to roll it etc. I'll refer to this video tonight as I continue my "fun" restoration project.
Done some glazing before found it pretty tricky with a flexible putty knife. The bent knife looks loads better. Thank you for the video. Your friend looks like a quality tradesman. Good to see!

there is a real craft to doing this. take your time, bobby ( in the video ) has done this for years. and the glazing compound needs to be fresh.
I had been thinking about replacing my old windows with vinyl, but I really like the look of wood. This doesn't look as difficult as I thought it would be, I think I'll give it a shot.

Are you kidding me....that video showed you nothing but how a guy who thinks he's a Glazier does a job , a drum of putty and a bent putty knife those 2 items where the closest thing to a glazier in the video
@ Sandra- Anyone cough using DAP (crap) is automatically disqualified as a legitimate glazier so I’ll have to agree with your statement.

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. It has been a great help. All the technique and tools, and seeing how he worked with this type of consistency of material (slightly chalky putty) and how things *should* work, was very helpful. My father slopped some putty on our first experimental window and diluted it waaay too much with linseed oil, thinking the putty had dried out, and what a mess! I am dreading being done with painting, as final clean up will doubtless be a chore.
I am repairing my dead grandmother's house which has fallen into disrepair due to my family's severe medical problems. I haven't been able to get a good job since college and have also borne the brunt of their medical issues, so am very poor, have been my whole life, nearly 4 decades now. A college degree was supposed to be the way to a better life, out of poverty, but that has failed miserably (every penny I made went to education, all for nothing, it seems). Some day, I figure when my parents die, this will be the only house I will ever have, so I am trying to save it so I have something left, however modest and desperately in need of remodeling, to live in.
By the way, it is several months later, and I've now finished painting after glazing. Took some time because I have limited bench space, so I had to do the windows in batches (remove putty, sand paint, dust off/vacuum the crevices so the glazing putty would adhere, apply putty, prime 2x, paint 2x, thin coats so the storm windows would still fit in their casings), then hang them, then on to the next batch. Yes, the Dap 33 is still rather soft. Oh well, what can you do, just leave it be--in fact, that might be better for the longevity of the glazing anyway, as too dried out will eventually crack and fall off and you'll be doing this again soon. As some people have said, be careful if you use a heat gun. Not only can it crack window panes, but it can also scorch the wood, something we found when removing the old glazing. We opted not to use a gun and just used a sharp wood chisel (finely honed edge like the scraper in this video--do *not* use a hammer and screwdriver, too blunt, hammering on it with force needed to remove the putty will break the glass) to firmly but gently pick and chip everything out. Most of it came out, but small bits here and there, as well as the occasional 2-3 inch run that didn't want to come out when picking at it just resulted in powdery bits instead of chunks of removed glazing, we left there and glazed around. After painting, it doesn't look too bad.
We did treat the bare wood underneath before glazing with linseed, leaving residue on the window. What works best for cleaning it is to first use a wood chisel or finely honed edge (plain putty knife nowhere near as good, edge not precise enough) to scrap off the large dried blobs, gently but firmly, not too much force that you break the window. Then, for the filmy residue, after giving the window a nice clean with regular ammonia window cleaner to remove other dirt, get a towel and dampen it with acetone. Don't get the cloth too wet, or you could harm your paint, etc. Also, don't try the mineral spirits from cleaning your brushes after oil based painting--it won't work, the chemistry is wrong. I think both the linseed and the acetone are polar, why the linseed is solvated in the acetone, whereas the mineral spirits is very nonpolar (as is gasoline). Turpentine which we used to slightly dilute the linseed application as is typical sort of works, but it seemed to me the acetone was more effective. Gently rub the acetone damp shop towel over the residue, and eventually it will come clean, magnificently.
Also, at first, when I taped off the windows for painting, I would tape very close to the glazing, trying to make a clean edge. I found after the first batch that it's better to leave a small, say 5 millimeter gap, so you have a place to score the paint. This way, you not only remove the tape without tearing the paint off, but you also leave a small layer of paint on the glass to help seal everything off from water.

be careful with the torch, it there is lead paint present, do not inhale the fumes, very bad for your brain cells. this is not the easiest DIY project, but its great when you get the technique down. thx!

Great video. I've been doing this for the last month on my house and it's good to see I'm on the right track. The warming up trick is something new.
He didn't really answer the question as to how long you should wait before cleaning up and painting the glaze. Any ideas?
Also, at most hardware stores there's a nice specialty tool to help you do this. He makes it look easy, but it is NOT. It takes a bunch of practice to get the feel of it.

Really great video. I really needed to understand the sight line part. I applied putty to my first window that was to thick and can be seen as I look out. Luckily I saw this before the DAP compound had skimmed over and I’d primed and painted. Also good to know I can let this cure properly before I prime and paint.
I do have a question it’s been a pretty wet year in the Midwest and I could not put off re-glazing. It’s September in Chicagoland and I am wondering if it’s acceptable to get the glazing done and just leave it to cure over winter? I will prime the wood with an oil-based primer prior to glazing and the window does have a storm window that is getting new spline to make it more efficient so there is no exposure to the elements.

it does take some work to do it, but once you get it, glazing windows is not hard to do. the key is how to hold the blade to get the compound to apply right. once you figure that out, you are good to go.

We have the old old old style crank out casement windows. The last time they were re-glazed was about 30 years ago, so you can imagine they are in pretty bad shape. There are some spots that need immediate attention and I want to thank you for this video. It is quite informative and has taken the 'scare factor' out of doing this myself.
I have a question, though. The metal frames of the windows are painted black. Can the putty be tinted black thereby eliminating the need for painting?
yes, window glaze does not like humidity, its best if you can remove the window and work in the garage, safer to. thanks,e ric.

Great video, how long do you have to wait to put the window back up? I'm using the same glaze you guys did and it says it can take between 7 and 14 days to fully dry.
