    Here's the thing. We want people to drive less and use ebikes and public transit right? You ban whole classes of ebikes themselves, and you end up leaving out a whole transportation option that people might otherwise be willing to shift to. This is like banning cars for all their accidents. The answer is not a ban, but 1. dedicated bike roads to give space for bikes away from cars and 2. road rules for ebikes, including age restrictions

      @ahonui ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are on the road, regardless of vehicle (cars, mopeds, and bikes) used, you have to follow the rules of the road. This includes stop lights, stop signs, turn signaling, and speed limits. Sidewalks have speed limits of 15mph

      I go 20mph on the sidewalk lol

    Here we go again, Hawaii imposing more rules and restrictions. It wasn't the bike that killed the boy. 🤔
    And why do you need to pay registration for a bike? Such a money hungry state!

    Wasn't the boy rear ended and thrown into the other lane? Maybe we need better driver education than bicycle education here!

    • @dan749

      No E bike operator rear ended an SUV, which caused E bike operator to veer onto the on coming traffic in which a truck collided with the E bike operator.

      @@dan749 sorry the news had it wrong yesterday then. Not that I'm for young children riding these things but we have some really bad drivers here! Also I almost hit a kid on a motorized scooter recently. Idk how these parents let these kids ride these things.

      @@cherylmedeiros6287 In the Netherlands they have actual bike and car road rules that integrate well and a system that acquaints people with both cycling and driving. Perhaps this underlines a need for a rework of Hawai`i road rules for both, accompanied by a required retest for all drivers and childhood education on road rules when using bicycles.

  • @garrettyamada9821
    @garrettyamada9821 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Less than 20 mph? All the e-bikes that the kids ride around on in my part of Waipahu are able to travel well past 20 mph.
    They are always zipping past vehicles that are traveling at speeds of 30-35 mph with ease.

    • @Critique808
      @Critique808 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know that road. It is downhill going Ewa bound from Kam highway. He was probably going faster than he should because of the downhill speed.

    • @Chunmeista
      @Chunmeista 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Critique808 then anyone driving a car downhill in the same way would have gotten into the same kind of accident-- or rather, it would have been worse.
      In this case, it sounds like operator misuse.

    As a former motorcycle rider I agree the biggest hazard to bicycle and motorcycle riders is other drivers. Lack of education and experience (age being in this category) are other significant factors. I don't know what the answer is...

      I have ridden Motorcycles since I was 18 years old I'm now 70 years old every accident I have ever been in was caused by a driver of a car not seeing me. WHY does HBL limit conducting their workshops mainly Downtown HNL/ WKK area. Every month, HBL could/should hold their workshops in different areas of Oahu, so as to avoid incidents such as Ewa Beach 12y/o.
    If HBL were Really concerned about education/prevention, they Would effort to reach out to ALL of Oahu, not just from Aiea/Kalihi/Manoa/Aina Haina/Hawaii Kai. There are bicyclists, both regular & e-bikes...All Over Oahu!

      Some people live over the Pali/Likelike though (over the mountains). If someone wants to use an ebike for that commute, it doesn't make sense to limit them to 15mph. I think it's still way justified for faster ebikes to exist, just they should not be forced to ride with cars.
