I couldn't care less which connector I'm using. But since HDMI is the standard in the home theater space and all devices are using it (TVs, A/V receivers, consoles), I'll probably be using HDMI for a very long time since I have all those things in my setup.
I am using DisplayPort with my second display, but that's only because my GPU has just one HDMI output. DP->HDMI adapters tend to cause problems, so I just went with a DP-DP cable instead.

I've an inkjet from Brother (dcp-195c), has served me well for 14 years. It ain't fancy, but does scanning and pretty decent photo's for the rare time I need to print. Most of what I actually print is receipts for online payments, 'cheat sheets' for coding, pages from manuals for certain kit, or guitar/bass tabs/chords.
That I can still buy something like 4 or 6 full sets of ink from a reputable seller, for less than half the price of an official set.. is amazing

• @Xanthelei
@Xanthelei 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Yup, the current family printer is a VERY old (by printer standards, I think it's from like 98) Brother all-in-one that my grandmother has had for as long as she was self employed. She brought it with her when she moved in with me and parents back in 2018 and we've replaced the toner in it once since then - and the old cart had been in there since at least 2016. She used to print 200-500 pages in a go for her job and even then the toner lasted about 5 months. It still does a decent scanning and copying job, and as long as we can keep finding working drivers and the occasional toner I doubt it will be replaced until long after she's left us.
Meanwhile I have an HP printer that I mostly keep around for the scanner bed because the paper feed sucks, it holds maybe 25 pieces of paper at a time and cannot grab the last 3 to save itself, the ink is half the price of Gramma's toner AND EXPIRES FOR GOD KNOWS WHAT REASON, and has intermittent connection issues despite never getting unplugged from my PC unless I'm moving the whole setup.
Buy Brother printers, yeah it's more expensive at first and they tend to be bigger, but they're just BETTER. At least the prosumer and business level ones are.

@adi14882 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

We use those same ones as in the video at work and we've gone through a couple of them so far. In case you're wondering, they last about 40k pages before the aftermarket toner gunks them up to the point where they leave residue on all pages even after you clean them and use new toner and drum. I'm sure they'd last a lot longer with OEM toner but that's not cost effective. In your case that would be about 60 years of use.

We need DisplayPort over USB-C to become the standard. USB-C is a better connector, cables are readily available, and users are familiar with them. DisplayPort could use a slight upgrade in specs focused on stability over new resolutions/refresh rates too.

• @Daktyl198
@Daktyl198 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

@@zwenkwiel816 as far as I’m aware, as long as the cable supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (aka 3.2 Gen 2x1 10Gbps AKA USB3) or later (which almost all non-charging USB-C cables do) then it has all of the pin outs required for DP over USB-C. At that point, it’s just on the video card and monitor to support the protocol. 3.1 Gen 2 even supports 4K resolutions or even higher at 60fps.

• @foldionepapyrus3441
@foldionepapyrus3441 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

USB-C is largely garbage, by far the worst 'standard' to take off that I've ever seen. It is far to complex, adds pointless cost in the either way up connector, has far to many optional features. So most devices might be able to do x, but only through 1 not all of their 3 USB-C ports. There are no mandatary markings to differentiate between the supported speeds and functionality of the cable/device port - so USB 2 only on the stupid new connector are very likely... Then as the bandwidth available and how it is shared by the downstream devices isn't clear or even comprehensible to a less techie user, and devices are coming with so few ports now as USB-C is the only connector it needs. So when you plug in your Dock with a monitor or two and USB drive you complain you can't get the connection speed or display resolution you expect - the dock may be good for 4K 60hz on 3 monitors, but the bandwidth that takes means any other feature can't be working fast...
Then you get to the cables - tiny connector with lots of pins and because the connector is so darn small the cables itself has to be relatively thin, so they end up more fragile and/or stiffer, much contain a microchip in the cable for the power delivery to work, etc - full capability USB-C cables are just not a good cable choice compared to HDMI or DP cables for the role of highspeed, and the positive latching and durability of DisplayPort is really hard to argue with..

You have all this expensive hardware and they are SO many software barriers to just consume and enjoy the content you PAID for. And there is no alternative. HDCP doesn't even prevent the sort of movie/TV piracy mentioned here. Ripping a Bluray/DVD does not involve HDMI at all.. it just needs a functioning drive, a PC, and a freely-available copy of MakeMKV. It might help against ripping live content, but since there's bajillions of TV scene groups out there it's clearly no barrier there either.
All HDCP does is protect the signal coming from the playing device (PC, Bluray player, cable box, etc) on its way to the displaying device (TV, monitor, etc) .. which hasn't been a relevant vector for ripping since the days of duplicating VHS tapes. *At best* OS makers supporting HDCP implement their own protections on top of it in order to get certified such as blocking screen recording when HDCP-protected content is playing, but even that is irrelevant as any such content has to be playing *from* something - a disc, streamed from a server, etc - and that something is going to take far less time and effort to rip than screen recording anyway.

[exasperated sigh] What's the point of having a 'standard', if your standard is a secret?
Some place in Europe, there is a standard 1kg block.
Building upon these and other advances, the meter was redefined by international agreement in 1983 as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second.
There's also one about how many wavelengths of light at a particular colour / freq a metre is.
For most of us, those are bit abstract, but we know the kg and the m are the same in Paris as they are in Sydney.
Now where would we be if France and Australia had to pay the intentional standards body a yearly fee, to calibrate and sync their measures, and the way that was done (as well is the numbers) was secret and copyrighted and patented?
You want people to adopt and use your standard. How are you going to promote that if you charge them money and then copyright hound them if they tell anybody what the standard is or how it gets calibrated?
That's not how you operate a 'standard' ~ it just isn't.This is monopolist business practice, the use of content monitoring and copyright content protection in the cable, and using a 'standard' to keep secret how it really works. the use of the word 'standard' in the title, is deliberately misleading.
I am an old Linux neckbeard, but this is everything we're used to in the Windows world, trying to muscle its way into the Linux world.
If you can patent or copyright or digital rights protect the speed of light, then your legal system is busted ~ not physics.

Noticed that the toners cost as much as a new printer so bought a Xerox with higher resolution but newer ones has them "trial" toners that doesn't last as long. But it was cheap and AWESOME quality. And refilled toners are cheap so have bought a set of high capacity toners and replaced two of the colors as they ran out. Never again inkjet printer. Have a old HP inkjet that I use for scanning since my old scanner was printer port only, no USB. So bought a $50 HP for scanning on it. Seriously heavy to dampen what little vibration the scanner travel creates, to reduce jitter. It sat unused for some years, until I discovered SANE had created drivers for it, and a SCSI-to-USB cable means I don't even have to have a special box built (as I used to) just to run a SCSI card.

Magnets only induce a current in wires when the magnetic field is changing, which with permanent magnets be a neodymium or ferrite or some other type that I'm not aware of, is only going to happen if the wire or magnet is in motion, so for a wired mouse there might be some concern (I have not personally tested this) for something like a display port or HDMI cable or a thunderbolt cable that's being used for display, where I personally can't imagine a scenario where these cables are moving at all, from the physics perspective, I don't see how this could be a concern.

God, I feel 22:45 so much. I maintain an expensive Netflix subscription for myself, my girlfriend, my mom, and my brother. I have to pay extra for my mom and brother because they don't live with me.
I have a sideloaded Firestick that I use. It would be far cheaper to set Firesticks up for my mom and brother than to keep paying for Netflix. However, they aren't tech savvy and the prospect of having to teach them to use Real Debrid makes me sigh and continue paying for Netflix.

The buttcrack pants issue is fixed in Husqvarna forestry pants and probably many toher work pants. There is a flap on the back that holds suspender buttons but it also keeps the crack from being exposed to the elements when bending over.

They had it for business just in years gone by, I think the branding was 'instant ink'.
It almost made a bit of sense, since the printer would tell HP when running low, and next day or 2, the guy would arrive to change carts/toner. It was a massive annoyance though compared to just having replacements in stock taking less than 5 minutes to swap out.

I specifically bought a 50€ HP combo unit including the 10 page instant ink plan for free for 6 months. After that, we are paying 1€ (now increased to 1,5€) month.
That's 12€ / 18€ a year, for which I could never buy the new ink once the old one dries out after not using it.
We are at average printing 2.something pages per month, so the main usage is scanning

What I always found odd about the HDMI vs DisplayPort thing with computers is that at one time you could be pretty sure that a computer would have a DisplayPort and you could be pretty sure that a monitor would have an HDMI port, but the reverse was in question.
I rip physical media for my own collection, and that is legal. The only iffy part about the legality is that you might have to defeat copy protection to do it, and the DMCA tried to make that illegal. However, the exceptions to the DMCA that are reviewed and renewed every couple of years can make this legal even according to the DMCA.

This is honestly still the case on entry level monitors - they only come with HDMI. And while GPUs tend to have one HDMI, it becomes a problem the second you want a cheap multi monitor setup, since now you've got 2-3 screens with HDMI only, and a GPU with only one native HDMI... I have one DP monitor and two HDMI ones, and that already requires a janky at best adapter. Sigh.

I still have a Brother MFC 495CW that I got back in 2011 and will never let die. That thing has been the single greatest tech investment I have ever made. It's wireless, my entire family can print to it from their phones, has an excellent scanner with document feeder, and prints decent enough color pictures. Sure it eats through ink a bit, but I can also buy generic ink cartridges for it that work just fine.

How they think this service works is insane to me.

I can't speak for Canada, but in the U.S. it's more common for the hotel to have some kind of laundry services than not. I stay at a hotel about once every 3 months for a week and have only stayed at one with absolutely nothing Another gave me a laundry bag and charged 5 bucks to wash, dry and fold. The rest have all had machines on site for 2 to 3 bucks each. Maybe it's less of a thing in extremely touristy areas like Vegas?

Kind of a note to make for the magnetic cable holders; make sure to put a caution for those with medical devices, such as a pacemaker, for not just the person buying but also the person who would be around them. Just a thought I had because I had to keep that in mind at work around a coworker when I wanted to get some super strong magnets to use for demos but I also didn’t want to unalive the guy.

Got it free from work when corporate finally upgraded us to a newer color printer and told us to dispose of the old one ourselves. (Really didn't really need color at work, either, but they wanted us to have a new printer anyway)

It lasted for years with only one toner replacement.
There were no official windows XP drivers, but the Windows 2000 ones worked. What killed it in the end was me switching to Windows 7. There were just no drivers that worked.

The best way to send a message to HP is for everyone to buy a printer subscription, get the printer and then immediately cancel it and send it back using the pre-paid shipping. It'll cost HP a small fortune (not just for the shipping but the handling and re-stocking costs of dealing with all the returns) if enough people do it.

1:59:31 When Luke said he wants a 16inch larger screen without the graphics card, I'm surprised Linus replied that Framework has limited options. You can just buy their 16inch without the graphics card module for $400 less. Better yet, if you change your mind later, you can simply buy the separate module. IMO, Frameworks has a huge amount of flexibility in use cases.
