      Most of the reason they are in a bad position financially is they used cheap money to do debt fueled growth. They bought many other companies in order to get bigger. We don't actually know if they would be profitable if they did not have the weight of all those other companies and loan payments. They are certaintly in a bad place now with interest rates going up.

    1:23:35 To remove tarnish from silver, you add aluminum and **washing** soda (sodium carbonite) into water, not baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). You then dip the silver item into the water so that it touches the aluminum. The thicker the aluminum, the better it will remove the tarnish. There was product sold on infomercials back in the 1990s that was basically a perforated aluminum sheet sized to fit in the bottom of a standard household sink and a small bag of washing soda for this express purpose. **edit** I should point out that washing soda is caustic. If you try this, wear kitchen gloves and goggles for protection.

    • @jase_allen
      @jase_allen ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Lagrange00 It kind of is a problem. I tried it back in the day when that infomercial aired a lot. I didn't catch the washing soda part and used baking soda and aluminum foil, just like Linus mentions. It didn't work. Years later I was looking for something in the cleaning aisle at the store and saw a box of washing soda. I remembered my experiment and bought it. I retried the experiment with the same small silver dish I tried it on the first time. It worked. It wasn't instant like in the infomercial with the much thicker aluminum sheet, and it certainly didn't make it gleam like I had properly polished it, but got rid of the tarnish.

      “Bicarb soda” is actually sodium hydrogen carbonate, and can be converted into the more corrosive sodium carbonate by heating it. (The powder releases water and co2 so it appears to boil for a while)
      If I had to speculate I’d suggest the alkali is dissolving the outer layer of aluminium oxide in the same way that hydroxide is used industrially, then the sulphur responsible for tarnish jumps over to the more reactive aluminium. (Internet results focus on the sulphur and not the purpose of the carbonate)

      @@Tofflus fair enough I stand corrected. I was just speculating it might be a CYA move given what happened with Quad9 vs Sony just a few months ago in a German court. The Ludum Dare game jam is coming up in a couple weeks which is a cool competition where people develop a game from start to finish in 72 hours. Over the years Unity has massively gained in popularity to where a solid majority of the games for Ludum Dare are Unity games. I will be interested to see the spread of game engines this time around. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Micro-B's downfall was not the spec. It came out right about the time that smartphones were going mainstream and manufacturers were aggressively chasing the race to the bottom. The point of Micro-B was to make the port more durable and let the cable be a wear part... Manufacturers immediately started violating the spec and made the ports cheap and flimsy too, as well as making crappy cheap cables so they could save a few pennies per unit. It was a match made in hell.

Unity bought an ADservice 2 years ago and seems to be exempting the install fees (or giving big discount 80-100%) to developers switching/using their ad service instead of competition. * Silver trick works, I read it in an old book and cleaned my moms jewelery regularly (as she only wore silver). Just salty water (boiling is only to disolve salt faster, not that important), crumpled aluminium foil and you drop all the silver items into a jar with all that and leave in a warm place for few hours, or overnight. It's just ion exchange, sulfur etc. jumps from silver to aluminium in an electrolyte. You can speed it up but I never had the need. You know its working when it starts to smell sulfury after some time.

    My favorite thing about the Unity stuff:
    If they somehow manage to accurately track installs, as they claim they will, then it would violate pretty much every data privacy law in the world
    If they fail to accurately track installs they will be sued by their shareholders for failing to live up to their promises and failing in their fiduciary responsibility

    It makes sense that many indie games were developed with Unity. Its pricing structure before this debacle and its LEGO-like ease of use made it a good fit for lightweight development. But, trying to find the silver lining here, forcing devs to move away from Unity might motivate them to learn and use better tools, maybe even creatively develop some of their own. In an environment where such scummy practices are legally possible, it makes sense to own as much of the codebase in one's projects as possible.
    4 legal levels of culpability:
    Negligence (manslaughter or negligent homicide) - You were too careless.
    Recklessness (manslaughter) - You knew or should have known your actions were likely to lead to harm, but no intent.
    Intentional (2nd-degree murder) - Just how it sounds, but it may have been a spur-of-the-moment act, not planned.
    Premeditated (1st-degree murder) - Malice aforethought. You planned your crime ahead of time.

    Funny that they are making fun of the Pirate Party. I don't know about the Canadian one but here in Iceland they are one of the biggest parties both on government and municipality level and their biggest contribution is in transparency in governance, freedom of internet and technology, fighting climate change, healthcare and social care. We need younger people in government everywhere in the world and what Jake did is a great thing and should not be shameful or having have to hide it on your CV. Be proud of this Jake!

    My family awhile back had a shock collar for our dog but actually never used the shock function. There was a tone sound that we’d press so when the dog hears it, they know it’s us telling them no or that they did something wrong. One of the younger kids used the shock part and my parents blew up on them about it and kept the collar off the dog only till guests are over. 1:12:19

    I'm gen Z and I can text faster than I type. I think the big issue is that we were taught to type pretty early in life and then it's just expected that we're always using computers but a lot of stuff is handwritten until college and by then you have years of a gap between when you learned to type and when it's applied. Meanwhile, we are always consuming content and reading the news on our phones. I bet if you had the Zoomers and the Millennials do speed typing and speed texting you'd see a large difference between the generations on both

    • @Daphoid
      @Daphoid ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As a millennial (barely) - I can most definitely type way faster than I can text. I've been touch typing since grade school as my family always had computers and my Dad encouraged me quite a bit when he saw interest (I work in IT now as an adult). I text in full sentences with both thumbs at a decent enough speed but am no speed demon. But I vastly prefer a full size keyboard, mouse, and monitor for doing anything more than consuming content.
      I will actively get up and go back to my desk if I have to do something requiring input; that and mobile websites / apps aren't always as fast.
      But I'm older than Linus, so who knows :)

    • @vaguelysomething
      @vaguelysomething ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Daphoid I prefer typing on a computer too for actual documents, reports, etc but when I type it's only at a "decent" speed and when I text I feel like a stenographer. When I was younger I always told myself I'd learn when I have to but now I'm an adult and I look down every few strokes because my hands aren't really on the home row while I have enough muscle memory to text without looking. I think a lot of us will have productivity issues if we're in a job that requires us to type a lot

    • @surft

    • @araeden
      @araeden ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Texting was also different before smartphones. Feature phones sometimes had those large rubber keyboards which slid out, and the blackberry phones had their own physical keyboards. Go further back and we texted using the T9 dialpad. I remember having the muscle memory to text a quick reply with one hand on a phone still in my pocket. I adopted smartphone use pretty late, and have always hated touch typing on them.

      i dont know what millenials and gen z's etc are, but i'm 43 and i can type waaay faster than i can text. touchscreen inputs are just such a bad way to interact with your device, you as an individual may be "faster on text" but if you put the practice in on a keyboard you will absolutely be faster on that.

    25:33 Unity back-charging developers is worse than Netflix changing the price of your subscription going forward.
    What Unity has done is more like Netflix raising the price to $20/month, and then hitting your credit card for $1200 because of the 100 previous months that you were only paying $8
