Made in USA is always the way to go. The steel retains it's value.

THIS! I'll take USA made working knife than a Chinese made "cool" blade.

I absolutely love this knife. I got one engraved, then got the same thing for my nephew and now I have the 726 mini spitfire coming soon too. Great knife!

Buck 420hc and other 420hc isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, Buck's heat treatment is as good as it gets. That and the 722 edge retention (or lack of) is why they are easy to sharpen. The idea being that every steel gets dull, so how easy is it to maintain? It comes down to preference, but the more I learn about buck knives the more I see their overall philosophy on owning and using knives and how that goes into their manufacturing. Not saying they are the best, just that they build to cater to their philosophy from budget knives to their custom shop.

Buck is a great classic American brand and alot of their knives are still produced in America. I'm planning on getting one of the new more premium 110s. Great review 👍

I like the option of positioning the clip wherever you want, and if you ever use that on game, the lock back is much easier to clean out than a liner lock. While the liner lock can be pretty strong when used in combination with a slip joint, on its own its much less robust than the lock-back... of those two, for my purposes, I would take the Buck every day of the week.

    • @DirkWerning

Don't compare liner locks with back locks, there is no comparison. Back lock is superior. I admit, if you want to use your knife to fidget, goof around, flipping it- the LL satisfies a nervous habit better, but if you want to really work with your knife the backlock is my choice by far. Advantage Buck.

I’ve learned to appreciate 420hc. It’s so easy to keep razor sharp, requires little to no maintenance when around water all the time (I am and I use mine for fishing and boating), and the steel is pretty tough.
I kind of see why Buck sticks with it. The average non knife guy can buy an affordable hunting knife with a cheap sharpener and be good to go with an awesome looking American made knife.
However I am glad Buck is answering the call and offering more steels now. Their new hunters are in Magnacut and you can get many others in S35v.
BTW I’m guilty. I have a decent amount of knives and my most carried is an orange spitfire 😂

Bucks heat treat process is proven awesome 👏. That 420hc from buck blows away most overseas steels . I wonder if it hammers through a bolt like their older knives did ?

Buck is pretending to sell one handed folders but they are not. This knife is tight as a drum in a bad way. It feels like they used glue for a lube. No matter if they put a hole in the blade or a thumb stud you are not flicking a Buck like you do a spiderco. I like the made in America and quality of materials in buck. Maybe the buck designers need to own some spiderco knives to figure out what makes a good modern folder.

You can adjust the tightness with a torc bit. Also, the washers (plastic) can easily be replaced with 1/4" brass ones....and it makes it buttery smooth and fast.

What are your thoughts on the 722 Spitfire being a kids first knife? Mine are 9 and 7. Just got back from camping and my kids were asking me about when they will get to have their first knife. The first folder I handled was Buck 110 way back in 1984 when I was really young. Still love the 110 and frequently carry my 3 dot 1980-81 in 440C. I now have too many expensive folders to name by all the usual suspect USA knife companies. But I'm thinking the Spitfire would be good for their first blade because it's Made here in Idaho where we live, is inexpensive, is thin, has a sturdy mid-length lockback, comes in orange so they can see it at camp, has a pocket clip and is 420HC which is easy to maintain. I was leaning towards a Buck 112 for them, but it's a little different animal. I would rather stay away from liner locks as I have never liked them. You said this was 7.2 oz when I think that is the 110 you referring to. I think the Spitfire is 3 oz.

    • @DirkWerning
      @DirkWerning  ปีที่แล้ว

I think I did misspeak on the weight as it is 3.2oz.
I love the idea of this as a kids knife ESPECIALLY since you live where it’s made. No question this is the knife for your kids first ones!!!!

@@DirkWerning bummer. Was the construction of this one any good? I got a custom 112 recently (I’ve been on a small traditional knife kick), and it was significantly better feeling than any 110 I’ve handled. I wonder if that carries over to knives of this style.

Appears that you have been grinding the recurve out of that blade. I have the s35vn version with G10 scales (custom shop $90) and each time I sharpen it (3x so far as I use it as my all purpose daily as well as camping and wood shaving/carving through knots etc) I am purposely grinding some of that recurve off as I've no use for that. I suppose I could do it all in one go and spend an entire afternoon on it... lol
