I'm from Florida, but have lived in NC for most my life. The last time I went to Florida I saw a rather muscular man aggressively pumping weights by himself in a home depot parking lot listening to horrible techno music on blast AND NO ONE BATTED A SINGLE EYE. That's what I love about Florida, you can be as weird as you want and people just accept it as facts of life.
The last time I was there visiting family I watched my cousin's drunk neighbor ride a sea turtle that always swam up the canal out front of their house.. and also there was a local news story about a serial butt grabber on the loose.
It's worth noting that Florida's Sunshine Laws are what make this possible. All government records are available to the public and media immediately after they are recorded. This includes all local, county, and state hearings and arrest reports. This is unique to Florida and provides all these stories. There is a story of a reporter from Ohio who moved to Florida for a new job. During his first week, he made a records request regarding an arrest that had recently happened. After that first single request, he would receive a daily email from the local police with every arrest report from the previous day...this went on for the remainder of his career in Florida.
When I lived in FL there was a well known homeless guy everyone called the dancing bum. He was this hippy looking old guy with long white hair and a cane who would hang out in Tampa at a specific stoplight. When the cars stopped he would dance his heart out with the cane back and forth in front of the cars. All the locals knew him. I don’t remember him asking for money or holding signs, he would just dance his heart out with no music. One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

I really like to imagine that the guy that stole the electric scooter started putting it together in order to use it as a get away vehicle, but he grossly underestimated just how long it would take to construct it and decided to just stick it out.

Fun fact: According to Legal Eagle, Florida doesn't necessarily have more crazy stories than other states, it's just that the information is more readily available due to differences in laws around handling of criminal activity.
It has more to do with transparency of government records, including criminal proceedings. It's honestly a pretty good thing, and Florida Man is just a goofy product of it. DeSantis wants to do away with the Sunshine Laws, though. So maybe the sunset is on the horizon for florida man.

I'm a FL native and nothing surprises me. FL is so packed with diverse communities you literally have every walk of nature here. I saw a guy other day while I was in my car driving he was coming towards me on a bicycle towing a male torso of a mannequin behind him. Only in Florida.
I think if he actually kept his mouth closed for the entire police booking process, he could dodge this charge with maybe just a bit of substance abuse classes (I mean, assuming he was high at the time) like, nobody in the store tried to stop him, he didn't leave the premises technically

Ive lived in Florida for about 5 years, it is an amazing state not because of its education, safety, or whatever. it is incredible for it's wackyness and honestly it feels like a Yakuza game, everywhere you turn you'll get a side quest from a meth addict inside of a dumpster. truly one of the states of all time.
During my time living in Florida I’ve learned every day can turn into a side quest and the main quest is staying alive. The people on their own aren’t especially dangerous but driving on 95, nature, the sun, plants, and water are testing your durability at all times.
There was a story in Sweden, like ten years ago, where some guys imported tons of garlic from China to Norway. They then drove over the border to Sweden to sell it off on the cheap. This was to circumvent some EU import tax. They eventually got caught by the border control because one of the officers thought that the truck "had a slightly garlicky smell"

The part I remember the most is the guy on border patrol being interviewed mentioned that the truck smelled like garlic, and he thought it was weird
I'm a FL native, St.Petersburg specifically, went to Dallas this past weekend. This one uber driver said "people here talk about FL like it's paradise, it sounds like heaven." I started laughing hysterically. Good luck finding a job that pays just enough to cover your astronomical rent that is astronomically getting worse because people keep moving here because they hear its paradise.
The rent has nothing to do with Florida it's literally the entire housing market whether you're looking for a house or an apartment or whatever tf it's all gone up drastically nationwide But Florida is legitimately a beautiful state if you ignore all the people and just look at the state itself it's incredibly beautiful there's a lot of nature here and we got a bunch of rivers and beaches and even swamps like the everglades (which is one of very few in the world) the state is full of life and adventure and you also have city life mixed in as well that's why Florida is such an attractive place for people to want to move then we have theme parks like yo Florida has a lot there's something here for everyone we even have legal DMT churches in Florida yes you can go a business that is legally allowed to sell you DMT while you stay there lol (fun fact: surprise surprise 3-4 people have overdoesed and died but that's cause they lied about having medical conditions or taking other medications etc.)

Most of those people are not from florida I can promise you that. Any time i see a license plate form the northeast it is frightening. I think the best thing showing how insane Florida is is driving into Florida. There's an immediate shift as soon as you pass the sign saying you've entered the state of Florida, suddenly everyone accelerates by 40 mph and starts cutting each other off. It's insane.

I am from Jacksonville, FL and currently live there. Recently I was stuck behind some idiot at a traffic stop, who had 10 chances to go and wouldn't. I got annoyed and honked my horn. He turned around and he had a key board duster can in his hand and was huffing it. I politely backed up and went down another road.
When I was a kid living in Florida, I watched a man throw a 4 prong pitchfork and hit a water moccasin that was chasing his wife from about 10 feet away. I think about it all the time because of how mind blown I was 😂
First story reminded me of when I was in middle school and two guys stole two bikes from our schools bike rack in the middle of the day, and even better, in the middle of recess when there were students outside. One of my classmates got them on video and a teacher called the police. The police found them behind an abandoned store literally across the road doing bike tricks. Still think about them once in a blue moon.
I currently live in Maine, and I’ve lived a whole lot of places. I do seasonal work in Florida and I have never witnessed such insanity as I have driving on 200, working in peoples homes in the highlands, and walking through downtown Sarasota. Ex-dairy grocery store worker here. There are four gallons of milk per ‘carton’ or the square plastic things that say do not steal on them. Still, $2.50 for a gallon of milk from a strange sounds like a long strange trip
They’d probably be selling it to businesses eg: small stores or restaurants, not consumers. The guys selling it likely already do food deliveries and mix the stolen milk in with the rest of the goods being delivered. Also, this was happening since 2021, it wasn’t $1m worth of milk in one hit 😂
I swear being a Florida man is both a blessing and a curse. South Florida is hot as hell but at the same time you see a lot of crazy shit and get a lot of good stories, and this is coming from a guy like me who lived in south Florida for over 15 years. 😂
As a former denizen of Florida myself, I saw quite a lot of interesting things during my short tenure in the state. I fondly remember going to Kmart off of the 441 in Hollywood and seeing a man arguing with someone because they didn't have a tee shirt he wanted in his size. I remember him flipping over an entire clothing rack in sheer anger, to my sheer amazement. I remember some lady at the nearby Burger King threatening to stab a cashier because her coupons were expired. There was also the story of the Shenandoah Rapist being persecuted and I think they were looking for him for weeks, I don't remember. This was back in 2006, all I remember was one of my teachers telling me to make sure my doors were locked at night. Oh and there was this one time where this guy was running away from the cops and he ran right past my house. He was arrested four blocks from where I used to live. The guys next door to use tried stealing our Cockatiels and stole the whole neighborhood's Trash cans after Hurricane Wilma, I got into a fist fight with this one kid in middle school because he said he hated my spongebob shirt so he attacked me for no reason and some girls were arrested for indecent exposure down in Miami Beach because they thought playing volleyball with their titties out in the open was a good idea. That was the first time I saw a titty, the best memory of Florida I could have left with. Thaknfully I escaped that post apocalyptic wasteland but my aunts and uncles and cousins live there. One in Tampa, the other in Orlando and the third in Tallahassee, so I'm sure they have more stories than I do. Oh speaking of Orlando, when I was leaving the state I stopped at the Orlando Airport and they have this shuttle service straight to Disney that comes every like two hours or so... and I remember this family of five waiting around and the father was verbally abusing several staff members because their shuttle hadn't arrived yet and he wanted like a refund or something? As if the airport handles that. If it's a Disney shuttle they needed to take that up with the park, but it made my layover that much more interesting. Some kid tried stealing my GBA SP but I had the wrist strap on so he fucked off to the bathroom. Oh and there was a man shitting his brains out in the airport bathroom and screaming bloody murder in there, it was so bad that everyone else left, but I had to stay because my uncle is handicapped and needed help. I tried not dying of laughter with every fart. I feel bad for that man and still feel for him to this day. Those are but a handful of my experiences in Florida. I won't even get into the story of the one guy who tried robbing one of those blood bank donation busses for some reason. Though that was hearsay, it did happen in that local kmart so it might've been true lol.

yes they do hold four gallon jugs, but they also hold nine half gallon jugs. considering these products were most likely being sold to small convenience/corner stores, a half gallon makes more sense to steal and sell to them. honestly unless you have a family of four people are not gonna be buying a whole gallon of milk. if you buy nine half gallons for ten bucks and sell them for three or four dollars a piece at your corner store, you can easily make your money back and take some home for yourself.

For the milk theft story, it’s very possible that the stolen milk was then being advertised as unpasteurized. For some reason, there absolutely is a “black market” for raw milk since you can’t legally buy it from any store.
I remember an internship I did where I stayed for some time with a host. Ine day the host had over a friend in their 60s and it was the friend’s bday. When asked how they celebrate, they said they’d dpend the morning meditating on the Akashic Diaries and then in the evening chill on their boat partying with a bunch of younger women. Then they left in a sportcar with a giant teddy bear buckled into the passenger seat. Place is wild.

As it turns out, there’s not much that’s bad with Florida compared to other places: Florida just has very open public record laws so the most crazy stories are conveniently accessible there. Which is a good thing, despite the publicized. They’re not terrible, the rest of us are just lying to ourselves about ourselves.

@keenarnia California isn’t a place you can generalize though. I’m in SoCal near the coast and it’s pretty tame. Drive an hour inland though and it’s nothing but neighborhoods that people in Watts would say look sketchy. California is as diverse as the United States itself on a smaller level.
That milk one is actually smart because I work in a place that makes and distributes milk and the amount of milk that spills and doesn’t get put on record because we know stuff happens is insane. So if they had a place that’s lax on the dump counting and missing milk that’s pretty easy to get bobtail drivers to take in a little extra milk and switch later lol. Then have places like Dollar Generals and other small stores like them buy off of you instead. I guess since I work in that area it makes sense more to me but they put their thinking caps on for that one.
I work commercial construction and have replaced most the loading docks for the semi trucks at a highland dairy and Belfonte . Can confirm the amount of waste is insane. If they have a production issue they could have to throw out a lot of product at a time.better safe than sorry . I still think some higher up’s would figure out that there expected waist amounts were going up. Probably got to greedy
The thing is though, when you live with and in chaos long enough you stop seeing it. It starts to take something truly unique to catch your eye. I moved here from Birmingham 12 years ago and it has gotten to the point that most of it is background noise at this point.

My husband is friends with a guy who was born and raised in Florida. Man's is 10000% a Florida man. I watched him do donuts in a SxS for five minutes straight, only to go and puke his guts up in the parking lot. He's fucking wild but we love him. He knows the BEST trails for four-wheeler rides. One time we ended up in another state because we drove for so long, just following him.
I saw a really cool breakdown by Legal Eagle about the formation of the Florida man mythos and its origin in the very loose public records laws in Florida. So basically any police reports etc, even fresh ones, are available en masse to the media, leading to greater proliferation of particularly weird stuff that the media in other states wouldn't have unfettered access to. I still think there's something in the air in Florida, and I mean besides 99% water content.

I've lived in many states, but by far Florida was my favorite. The landscape is gorgeous and the people, although crazy are very polite. I live up near Erie now and every day I miss the Gulf Coast

We had a milk theft near me recently in the UK, someone stole the van while it was being unloaded and ran. Police got them eventually but I just remember being SO confused seeing multiple gallons on the sides of the main roads, like piles and piles of bottles that had fallen out while they were driving. Don’t know if they were going for the milk or just the van? Very weird

As a Canadian I've been to Florida many more times than any other state. I thought you guys were all like that. I love Florida! Although as a kid I remember driving through Orlando and was shocked by seeing homeless people everywhere in the city...and this was in the late 80s . Its probably a tad worse now but then again same as anywhere these days. Florida has a vibe though...

I started laughing hysterically. I am from Jacksonville, FL and currently live there. Recently I was stuck behind some idiot at a traffic stop, who had 10 chances to go and wouldn't. I got annoyed and honked my horn. As a former denizen of Florida myself, I saw quite a lot of interesting things during my short tenure in the state. I fondly remember going to Kmart off of the 441 in Hollywood and seeing a man arguing with someone because they didn't have a tee shirt he wanted in his size. I remember him flipping over an entire clothing rack in sheer anger, to my sheer amazement. I remember some lady at the nearby Burger King threatening to stab a cashier because her coupons were expired. There was also the story of the Shenandoah Rapist being persecuted and I think they were looking for him for weeks, I don't remember. This was back in 2006, all I remember was one of my teachers telling me to make sure my doors were locked at night.
Oh and there was this one time where this guy was running away from the cops and he ran right past my house. He was arrested four blocks from where I used to live. The guys next door to use tried stealing our Cockatiels and stole the whole neighborhood's Trash cans after Hurricane Wilma, I got into a fist fight with this one kid in middle school because he said he hated my spongebob shirt so he attacked me for no reason and some girls were arrested for indecent exposure down in Miami Beach because they thought playing volleyball with their titties out in the open was a good idea. That was the first time I saw a titty, the best memory of Florida I could have left with. Thaknfully I escaped that post apocalyptic wasteland but my aunts and uncles and cousins live there. One in Tampa, the other in Orlando and the third in Tallahassee, so I'm sure they have more stories than I do.
Oh speaking of Orlando, when I was leaving the state I stopped at the Orlando Airport and they have this shuttle service straight to Disney that comes every like two hours or so... and I remember this family of five waiting around and the father was verbally abusing several staff members because their shuttle hadn't arrived yet and he wanted like a refund or something? As if the airport handles that. If it's a Disney shuttle they needed to take that up with the park, but it made my layover that much more interesting. Some kid tried stealing my GBA SP but I had the wrist strap on so he fucked off to the bathroom. Oh and there was a man shitting his brains out in the airport bathroom and screaming bloody murder in there, it was so bad that everyone else left, but I had to stay because my uncle is handicapped and needed help. I tried not dying of laughter with every fart. I feel bad for that man and still feel for him to this day. Those are but a handful of my experiences in Florida. I won't even get into the story of the one guy who tried robbing one of those blood bank donation busses for some reason. Though that was hearsay, it did happen in that local kmart so it might've been true lol.

For the milk theft story, it’s very possible that the stolen milk was then being advertised as unpasteurized. For some reason, there absolutely is a “black market” for raw milk since you can’t legally buy it from any store.
I remember an internship I did where I stayed for some time with a host. Ine day the host had over a friend in their 60s and it was the friend’s bday. When asked how they celebrate, they said they’d dpend the morning meditating on the Akashic Diaries and then in the evening chill on their boat partying with a bunch of younger women. That milk one is actually smart because I work in a place that makes and distributes milk and the amount of milk that spills and doesn’t get put on record because we know stuff happens is insane. So if they had a place that’s lax on the dump counting and missing milk that’s pretty easy to get bobtail drivers to take in a little extra milk and switch later lol. Then have places like Dollar Generals and other small stores like them buy off of you instead. I guess since I work in that area it makes sense more to me but they put their thinking caps on for that one.
I work commercial construction and have replaced most the loading docks for the semi trucks at a highland dairy and Belfonte . Can confirm the amount of waste is insane. My husband is friends with a guy who was born and raised in Florida. Man's is 10000% a Florida man. I watched him do donuts in a SxS for five minutes straight, only to go and puke his guts up in the parking lot. He's fucking wild but we love him. He knows the BEST trails for four-wheeler rides. One time we ended up in another state because we drove for so long, just following him.
I saw a really cool breakdown by Legal Eagle about the formation of the Florida man mythos and its origin in the very loose public records laws in Florida. So basically any police reports etc, even fresh ones, are available en masse to the media, leading to greater proliferation of particularly weird stuff that the media in other states wouldn't have unfettered access to.

I've lived in many states, but by far Florida was my favorite. The landscape is gorgeous and the people, although crazy are very polite. I live up near Erie now and every day I miss the Gulf Coast

We had a milk theft near me recently in the UK, someone stole the van while it was being unloaded and ran. Police got them eventually but I just remember being SO confused seeing multiple gallons on the sides of the main roads, like piles and piles of bottles that had fallen out while they were driving. Don’t know if they were going for the milk or just the van? Very weird

As a Canadian I've been to Florida many more times than any other state. I thought you guys were all like that. I love Florida! Although as a kid I remember driving through Orlando and was shocked by seeing homeless people everywhere in the city...and this was in the late 80s . Its probably a tad worse now but then again same as anywhere these days. Florida has a vibe though...
I was born and raised in Orlando (still currently live here) and there’s a hefty amount of homeless people still here. I’m sure it’s declined over the years though
