Also, before you say it, yes, I am aware of the Ainu people. The protagonists outfits are incorporating some elements of some of their clothing, but is more heavily general-Japan inspired I feel. My theory is that this game is the sinnoh region's colonization, people have just discovered the region and are now colonizing it. That would also explain why Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup are not the starter pokémon, becouse they havent been discovered yet

The only fossil to be registered to be seen without the use of resurrection tecnology is Kabuto, and yes in the crown tundra we have wild fossil pokémon but the story of crown tundra is placed after the invention of the resurrection machines
I remember a concept way back then set in Kanto years before Gen 1. You play as Oak in his younger years filling logging pokemon he caught for his proto-pokedex.
One other interesting thing I noticed is that the symbol on the character’s sleeves looks a lot like Team Galactic’s logo. Same color, similar shape, just a bit more black. Not sure f there’s any real significance to it, but how cool would it be if Cyrus saw the symbol in a history book or something and decided to use it for his team?!
Cyrus could have some sort of legacy that links him to whetever organization we're a part of, and that's why he knows about the Sinnoh legends and how to make the red chain.
Theories abound for this one and I hope we actually get some answers! Personally I like to think that Cyrus is either a descendant of the protagonist (and the symbol is a family crest of sorts, hence why he’d know about it and decide to use it), or a descendant of the professor who gives the protagonist their starter (maybe they were researching legends in Johto, Unova, and Alola before becoming interested in Sinnoh).
I saw a theory that this can be a “timeline split” for lack of better words. In Diamond/Pearl lets say we dont defeat team galactic and cyrus gets control of palkia/dialga, he can now potentially warp space/time. We get set back in time with cyrus and thats why the protagonist looks so much like dawn/lucas. Cyrus is ruling over sinnoh and doing bad guy stuff, and now the protagonist has to stop him and “right the reality”.

The reason people are calling it “feudal” is because of leaks. Where we only saw very blurry footage and descriptions from people who saw the trailer once.
While this is an incorrect myth, the origins actually come from the incredibly slow and then incredibly rapid development of Japan. While Feudalism proper began to be dismantled in the 1600s, many of its trappings, its architecture, its class structure, its economic organization, etc, endured up until the Meiji Restoration...in 1868. For perspective, this would be like if Europe had just paused most of its cultural, economic, political, and social development around the time of the early Renaissance for a few centuries and then suddenly leaped into the Industrail Age. As a result, proper Feudal Japan and late Edo Period Japan...look remarkably similar in many regards on the surface. The massive economic liberalization, dismantling of class hierarchy, free trade, enormous education efforts, and breakneck urbanization transformed Japan in a way not many nations up to that time had experienced. So to the outside world, on the surface of it, Japan does look like a nation that basically pivoted on a dime in the late 1800s and went from Feudal to Industrial in a matter of some 40 or 50 years. So anything pre-industrial in Japan is going to look a lot like proper Feudal Japan.
Considering Rowlet and Oshawatt are there regardless of the fact they evolve into a archer and samurai respectively means that the American based pokemon regions are around and are using these pokemon.
I also think we could add the Starters in there as well. There could be a reason why these three were chosen specifically. Oshawott is a samurai. Not only were samurai among the upper echelon of the sociopolitical sphere of Japan, but the Meiji period saw the end of their being the only military power of Japan and essentially dismantled the class system to a degree. Rowlett uses a bow. Bows, or rather the yumi, were some of the most important weapons in Japan. However, with the Meiji era and the steam revolution, this old style of fighting became relegated mostly to a sport rather than warfare. Cyndaquil evolves into the Volcano Pokemon. Not only is Japan in the Ring of Fire and therefore has multiple natural disasters and volcanic eruptions over centuries, but many of them were associated with a Kami, or a spirit/god. However, during the Meiji era they would undergo a massive reform for the Shinto shrines and amalgamate or disband multiple important areas, and due to imperialism from the Western world would see their own religion not be entirely gone but lose its power to some degree. Not only do these three Starters specifically represent the older Japan, but also exactly WHAT change during the Meiji period. Just some food for thoughts.
Another thing to think about, Oshawott and Rowlett are both from American inspired regions and American gunboat diplomacy was basically what kickstarted the Meiji restoration.

@@demikus The symbol on Legends' characters is a Kanji, and it can be translated as "galaxy". It could also be the opposite, with Cyrus reused the symbol because the Legends events are history, in an attempt to use the prestige of Legends' characters.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this was Meiji era. I mean that is when Hokkaido was really started to get settled by actual Japanese. Hokkaido was considered a security threat because of Russia.
I would love for this to become its own game series. Fleshing out the past of the Pokémon universe even more by showing major events ( even letting us participate in them) will make it a richer game franchise. Imagine being in the Kanto war or walking into ancient johto and seeing the burned tower on fire. The potential for this series is amazing

I thought you would talk about it when you mentioned the foreign starters, but Oshawott is from Unova, the region based on New York, USA. If Oshawott, endemic to the Unova region, can make its way to Sinnoh, that means people have come to Unova and left. To my knowledge, no native people of America actually ventured out to other countries before Europeans started colonizing the continent, so that would probably mean that the Unovan starter comes from an already colonized America. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the USA, for better or for worse (they did show up in steam-powered destroyers to show off) were one of the big reasons Japan felt the need to modernize. Great video, probably one of my favourite, and much needed during early speculation ! Also that plus is KEWT!
Crystal is always going to be one of my favourite Pokemon games, it may just be nostalgia blinding me but I desperatly want more Johto content. Suicune is one of my favourite legendaries and I love the adventure/lored hidden in that game. (Ruins of Alph, the multiple towers, the hints at Celebi in Forest Gaurdian Shrine from the forest right after the Apricorn man, etc.)
I think the “big thing that changes everything” could very easily be the final eruption of mount coronet. Wether that’s Giratina’s fault or not, we’ll have to see.
@@seich-of-lacan-getter514 Yeah, but not at Mt Coronet. It's not even on the mainland of the region. The volcano it lives in is part of a separate landmass where battle frontier-y things go on, IIRC.
Let's also appreciate that this is more of a rough draft than a finished product. So many other things that could be analyzed and weren't because there's already so much TO discuss while going only over the biggest things shown and not the fine details. If given more time, I could see this video being at LEAST twice as long with how thorough Lockstin is. This is impressive.
Not sure I want to 'appreciate it' to be honest. I'm more concerned than anything else. The reason there's so many inaccurate "feudal Japan" videos is because everyone rushes at breakneck speed to get their videos out to capitalise on the hype and maximise clicks, views and attention. Lockstin is no different. It would be better in terms of content, and better for the health of content creators if they and we didn't feel as if they had to burn themselves out as quickly as possible to get content out there after these video presentations.

It's possible that Oshawott and Rowlett originated from outside their respective regions. Like how the games say that Tauros were originally from Alola, or how Galarian Zigzagoon was the original Zigzagoon. But then again, we never see them outside their regions in the games, but that might be due to the fact that starter pokemon are endangered species.
Well, there's nothing that says these regions have to be in the same place that their respective counterparts would be in the real world. by all means, the world map in pokemon could be completely different.

I think you're spot on. Only thing is the hat "Lucas" is wearing looks more like one of those "paper boy" hats in my eyes. But back on topic, they did say people from all over were coming to the region and that the Professor got those Pokemon from other places he had been. It's also worth remembering that Red and Green had very similar tech available in Kanto as to what's available in our world, with the main differences being Pokemon related technology and teleport tiles. So yeah. It's possible the eras could be parallel. Then again, things did get weird with the tech as time went on. Who knows?

I believe this. With how advanced Pokemon technology is, its safe to say that Pokemon in the current timeline are very far in the future. Black and white had a rollercoaster that hovered, warp pads that teleported your player to an entirely different building, Pokemon being manufactured by people etc. In Pokemon standards, the Industrial Revolution could be like their feudal Japan which was most likely more than at least 1-2 millennia ago

The Meiji Restoration part can also be supported by the starters in general. Typhlosion represents to explosions of gunpowder, Samurott represents the samurai warriors, and Decidueye represents the archers. Since it was a war, you gotta have some weapons and these 3 fit the bill perfectly
God I really hope legends is done right and plays well. I’m super excited for the idea of a free roam Pokémon game BOTW style with each element of Pokémon helping you traverse and solve puzzles through the island.

Its also worth mentioning that during the Meiji period most common people still used traditional clothing and while western clothing was mostly used by goverment officials and the same goes for architecture too mostly goverment buildings were made with western design in mind so that place with the starters could be something similar
0:52-0:55 I would be gasping that someone dared to point out that routes in Pokemon are in fact: *linear hallways*. But I know that Lockstin learns the moves Research, Pay Attention and Honesty all by leveling up. On other topic, it's nice to see the open world being more than just a cheap gimmick, add me to the list of "I hope this becomes it's own series and we get to see more of the Pokemon's world history" (Kalos War anyone?).
'Legends' seems like just the thing that the season-pass system was made for. Pay a set price and have many short stories, between twenty minutes and two hours. Span it out over a year or so, thus giving the next core game a chance to be amazing and perhaps get inspired with things test played in the shorts. Civ. 6 just did this, and it has been a great success.
@Matthew Hohenbrink that was most likely just buggy lighting in a rushed build. Rhyhorn is a very light blue-ish grey, it was likely exaggerated by the super bright lighting affecting it.
Fun fact: The 3 starter Pokémon are based on symbols of the indigenous Ainu that used to live in the Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan (which is what Sinnoh is based on): the Shima-Owl, Otter, and the Volcano
Haven't watched the vid yet, but throwing down my take first: Oshawott=Samurai Rowlet=Archer Cyndaquil=Mt. Fuji/Coronet Edit: So since it's Hokkaido, Mt. Fuji wouldn't make much sense. Looking it up, Mount Asahi is the tallest mountain on the island of Hokkaido. If anyone knows more about the real world influences of Mount Coronet, let me know!

The turned based combat for Legends seems like it’s going to clash heavily But what I’M most excited for is the potential for Legends Kyurem, if it becomes a thing. Imagine fighting in the war between the two princes
I already now want a Legends: Mew game, where we play as Dr. Fuji's assistant, exploring dense jungles and mountains in a new region based on S. America, and finding/capturing the Mew that would eventually be taken to Cinnabar Island.
Something that bugs me about both the characters is the yellow patches those yellow patches look like team galactic symbols so the civil war thing is a possibility
Well one of Galactic's themes is futurism and technology, so it would make sense if a similar group is taking the place of the imperials in this, though During the war or shortly after it Hokkaido (where sinnoh is based on) actually attempted to declare independence as the Ezo Republic so if this situation does mirror the Boshin war that would be interesting.
When I saw the trailer for the game, I was happy for two reasons: one, they make a new series that explores the history of pokemon(thereby doing some world building like what Mario and Super Mario Odyssey), and two, that my/many other people's theories about children coming up with the pokedex entries may actually be true.
It's also of note that most of the starters are from america, and specifically of note is rowlet, since hawaii was only in contact with the US in around the mid 1800s, and the US started trade with Japan in the period.
My biggest hope is that Krabby and Kingler are in the game, just so that we can finally confirm once and for all that indeed...giant enemy crabs existed in ancient Japa-I mean Sinnoh, and you could attack their weak points for massive damage.
Of course, TGAAC is set in the actual Meiji period, and this is even referenced in-game, with many Japanese characters talking about the changes going on in Japan at the time. The majority of the games take place in the UK, however - which, needless to say, was already a very modern nation by the turn of the 20th century.
I bet it will take place 3000 years ago. I mean every plot point since X and Y has been 3000 years ago. The AZ war, Melmetal’s existence, the Darkest Day, etc..... Also, I bet AZ will show up in this game at some point
You should remember that the spin off game Pokémon Conquest exists in futal Japan (I think that's spelled right) and while in that game some characters mention the fact that in other regions people catch Pokémon with balls. So in futal Japan time they DO have Poke balls.
I think its valid to consider how weird pokemon technology is, like they have the power to turn things into energy but are never industrializing their towns. It might be a reason why this really is so far back

One other interesting thing I noticed is that the symbol on the character’s sleeves looks a lot like Team Galactic’s logo. Same color, similar shape, just a bit more black. Personally I like to think that Cyrus is either a descendant of the protagonist (and the symbol is a family crest of sorts, hence why he’d know about it and decide to use it), or a descendant of the professor who gives the protagonist their starter (maybe they were researching legends in Johto, Unova, and Alola before becoming interested in Sinnoh).
I saw a theory that this can be a “timeline split” for lack of better words. In Diamond/Pearl lets say we dont defeat team galactic and cyrus gets control of palkia/dialga, he can now potentially warp space/time. We get set back in time with cyrus and thats why the protagonist looks so much like dawn/lucas. Cyrus is ruling over sinnoh and doing bad guy stuff, and now the protagonist has to stop him and “right the reality”.

While this is an incorrect myth, the origins actually come from the incredibly slow and then incredibly rapid development of Japan. While Feudalism proper began to be dismantled in the 1600s, many of its trappings, its architecture, its class structure, its economic organization, etc, endured up until the Meiji Restoration...in 1868. For perspective, this would be like if Europe had just paused most of its cultural, economic, political, and social development around the time of the early Renaissance for a few centuries and then suddenly leaped into the Industrail Age.
As a result, proper Feudal Japan and late Edo Period Japan...look remarkably similar in many regards on the surface. The massive economic liberalization, dismantling of class hierarchy, free trade, enormous education efforts, and breakneck urbanization transformed Japan in a way not many nations up to that time had experienced.
So to the outside world, on the surface of it, Japan does look like a nation that basically pivoted on a dime in the late 1800s and went from Feudal to Industrial in a matter of some 40 or 50 years. So anything pre-industrial in Japan is going to look a lot like proper Feudal Japan.

I also think we could add the Starters in there as well. There could be a reason why these three were chosen specifically.
Oshawott is a samurai. Not only were samurai among the upper echelon of the sociopolitical sphere of Japan, but the Meiji period saw the end of their being the only military power of Japan and essentially dismantled the class system to a degree.
Rowlett uses a bow. Bows, or rather the yumi, were some of the most important weapons in Japan. However, with the Meiji era and the steam revolution, this old style of fighting became relegated mostly to a sport rather than warfare.
Cyndaquil evolves into the Volcano Pokemon. Not only is Japan in the Ring of Fire and therefore has multiple natural disasters and volcanic eruptions over centuries, but many of them were associated with a Kami, or a spirit/god. However, during the Meiji era they would undergo a massive reform for the Shinto shrines and amalgamate or disband multiple important areas, and due to imperialism from the Western world would see their own religion not be entirely gone but lose its power to some degree.
Not only do these three Starters specifically represent the older Japan, but also exactly WHAT change during the Meiji period. Just some food for thoughts.
Another thing to think about, Oshawott and Rowlett are both from American inspired regions and American gunboat diplomacy was basically what kickstarted the Meiji restoration.

It could also be the opposite, with Cyrus reused the symbol because the Legends events are history, in an attempt to use the prestige of Legends' characters.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this was Meiji era. I mean that is when Hokkaido was really started to get settled by actual Japanese. Hokkaido was considered a security threat because of Russia.

I thought you would talk about it when you mentioned the foreign starters, but Oshawott is from Unova, the region based on New York, USA. If Oshawott, endemic to the Unova region, can make its way to Sinnoh, that means people have come to Unova and left. To my knowledge, no native people of America actually ventured out to other countries before Europeans started colonizing the continent, so that would probably mean that the Unovan starter comes from an already colonized America. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the USA, for better or for worse (they did show up in steam-powered destroyers to show off) were one of the big reasons Japan felt the need to modernize.

Let's also appreciate that this is more of a rough draft than a finished product. So many other things that could be analyzed and weren't because there's already so much TO discuss while going only over the biggest things shown and not the fine details. If given more time, I could see this video being at LEAST twice as long with how thorough Lockstin is. This is impressive.
Not sure I want to 'appreciate it' to be honest. I'm more concerned than anything else. The reason there's so many inaccurate "feudal Japan" videos is because everyone rushes at breakneck speed to get their videos out to capitalise on the hype and maximise clicks, views and attention. Lockstin is no different. It would be better in terms of content, and better for the health of content creators if they and we didn't feel as if they had to burn themselves out as quickly as possible to get content out there after these video presentations.

It's possible that Oshawott and Rowlett originated from outside their respective regions. Like how the games say that Tauros were originally from Alola, or how Galarian Zigzagoon was the original Zigzagoon. But then again, we never see them outside their regions in the games, but that might be due to the fact that starter pokemon are endangered species.
Well, there's nothing that says these regions have to be in the same place that their respective counterparts would be in the real world. by all means, the world map in pokemon could be completely different.

I think you're spot on. Only thing is the hat "Lucas" is wearing looks more like one of those "paper boy" hats in my eyes.
But back on topic, they did say people from all over were coming to the region and that the Professor got those Pokemon from other places he had been. It's also worth remembering that Red and Green had very similar tech available in Kanto as to what's available in our world, with the main differences being Pokemon related technology and teleport tiles.
So yeah. It's possible the eras could be parallel. Then again, things did get weird with the tech as time went on. Who knows?

I believe this. With how advanced Pokemon technology is, its safe to say that Pokemon in the current timeline are very far in the future. Black and white had a rollercoaster that hovered, warp pads that teleported your player to an entirely different building, Pokemon being manufactured by people etc. In Pokemon standards, the Industrial Revolution could be like their feudal Japan which was most likely more than at least 1-2 millennia ago

Am I the only one who remembers that lockstin called it before sun and moon? Diamond and pearl remakes and an arceus only game which goes in the direction of a reboot. I mean its a generation late but still thats crazy
The Meiji Restoration part can also be supported by the starters in general. Typhlosion represents to explosions of gunpowder, Samurott represents the samurai warriors, and Decidueye represents the archers. Since it was a war, you gotta have some weapons and these 3 fit the bill perfectly
God I really hope legends is done right and plays well. I’m super excited for the idea of a free roam Pokémon game BOTW style with each element of Pokémon helping you traverse and solve puzzles through the island.
True tho the remakes disappointed me a little with the graphics but i will wait until it comes out maybe it will be fun i just feel like they are trying to rush a reamke for some money

Its also worth mentioning that during the Meiji period most common people still used traditional clothing and while western clothing was mostly used by goverment officials and the same goes for architecture too mostly goverment buildings were made with western design in mind so that place with the starters could be something similar

On other topic, it's nice to see the open world being more than just a cheap gimmick, add me to the list of "I hope this becomes it's own series and we get to see more of the Pokemon's world history" (Kalos War anyone?).
'Legends' seems like just the thing that the season-pass system was made for. Pay a set price and have many short stories, between twenty minutes and two hours. Span it out over a year or so, thus giving the next core game a chance to be amazing and perhaps get inspired with things test played in the shorts. Civ. 6 just did this, and it has been a great success.
Yup, Meiji is what I guessed too, because the embassy style building reminded me of Great Ace Attorney, another Meiji era game.
This could be a good way to introduce some extinct Pokemon species

@Matthew Hohenbrink that was most likely just buggy lighting in a rushed build. Rhyhorn is a very light blue-ish grey, it was likely exaggerated by the super bright lighting affecting it.
Surprised he didn't mention that hokkaido's major settlement started in the 1860s.
Fun fact: The 3 starter Pokémon are based on symbols of the indigenous Ainu that used to live in the Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan (which is what Sinnoh is based on): the Shima-Owl, Otter, and the Volcano

You can find the sinnoh starters as wild Pokemon meaning that you can capture your favorite sinnoh starter or all of the sinnoh starters.

The turned based combat for Legends seems like it’s going to clash heavily

I already now want a Legends: Mew game, where we play as Dr. Fuji's assistant, exploring dense jungles and mountains in a new region based on S. America, and finding/capturing the Mew that would eventually be taken to Cinnabar Island.
This needs to be spread around more. I am surprised at how much people missed that it most likely takes place a bit more than 100 years ago.
Something that bugs me about both the characters is the yellow patches those yellow patches look like team galactic symbols so the civil war thing is a possibility
Well one of Galactic's themes is futurism and technology, so it would make sense if a similar group is taking the place of the imperials in this, though During the war or shortly after it Hokkaido (where sinnoh is based on) actually attempted to declare independence as the Ezo Republic so if this situation does mirror the Boshin war that would be interesting.
Pre-watch guess: it's actually set during the Pokémon world's equivalent of the Taisho era, like Demon Slayer

When I saw the trailer for the game, I was happy for two reasons: one, they make a new series that explores the history of pokemon(thereby doing some world building like what Mario and Super Mario Odyssey), and two, that my/many other people's theories about children coming up with the pokedex entries may actually be true.
It's also of note that most of the starters are from america, and specifically of note is rowlet, since hawaii was only in contact with the US in around the mid 1800s, and the US started trade with Japan in the period.
Just Rowlett. Sea otters are universal and have inhabited Japan.

My biggest hope is that Krabby and Kingler are in the game, just so that we can finally confirm once and for all that indeed...giant enemy crabs existed in ancient Japa-I mean Sinnoh, and you could attack their weak points for massive damage.

Of course, TGAAC is set in the actual Meiji period, and this is even referenced in-game, with many Japanese characters talking about the changes going on in Japan at the time. The majority of the games take place in the UK, however - which, needless to say, was already a very modern nation by the turn of the 20th century.
I bet it will take place 3000 years ago. I mean every plot point since X and Y has been 3000 years ago. The AZ war, Melmetal’s existence, the Darkest Day, etc.....

You should remember that the spin off game Pokémon Conquest exists in futal Japan (I think that's spelled right) and while in that game some characters mention the fact that in other regions people catch Pokémon with balls. So in futal Japan time they DO have Poke balls.

I think its valid to consider how weird pokemon technology is, like they have the power to turn things into energy but are never industrializing their towns. It might be a reason why this really is so far back
Perhaps that book/journal would be the pokedex equivalent and we see it be filled with pokemon drawings and descriptions as we progress through
