I’m so bummed that there’s no Wimbledon this year. But I’m enjoying these flashback videos. I miss that era of tennis with Bjorn Borg and Martina Navratilova!
I know. I'm in tears, cant see the screen as I'm typing :) Esp thinking back to the roller coaster their friendship went through... the bravery on both their parts. No disrespect to Steffi, but my fave 3, her & Chris, & Monica. Bloody stabber...
As much as I love Martina and her game, I have to hand it to Chris for her graciousness and also for the kind words from Steffi Graf about Martina’s play.
I loved how, in 2003, on the same day that Roger Federer won his first singles title, John McEnroe later became so upset during the women's doubles final that it might go on too long and push the mixed final to the next day or another court and deny him the chance to call the match that tied Ms Navratilova with Mrs King's record of twenty combined Wimbledon titles. He even ranted during points when all four players were in the backcourt that doubles is played at the net, and Martina would be turning in her grave if she were dead instead of waiting to get on the court. Mr McEnroe (who had not yet recovered from Steffi Graf's withdrawal in 1999 after they had reached the semifinals) became a little emotional during the mixed final, and then Ms Carillo told him, "It's not too late," which sadly did not have the same success as the prediction in 1993 of the Duchess of Kent to Jana Novotna that Jana would win it one day. And, happily, after that 2003 final, Ms Navratilova did not annoy any of the officials by taking a few blades of Centre Court grass.
Mega ditto. No diss to Steffi, but for mine, Martinas 18 mean more than her 22. Monica was starting to stunt that tally, when human flotsam got in the way with a knife.
This is what made me want to play tennis. I enjoyed watching Martina and Chrissie play each other. The competition was always good and fair. Miss those days.
Its funny how time works. When Martina was at the top there was no question about who was the greatest womens tennis champion ever. Now she hardly gets mentioned in the goat conversation. IMO she alone was more responsible for revolutionizing and the evolution of womens tennis than any other. She was the most competetive dug in player for a very long time that Ive ever seen. She would do anything to win. And the times that she overcame in a match should be celebrated. Im a huge Graff fan but Id even put Martina a tic above her.
Real tennis fans always considered Margaret Court greater than Evert or Navratilova. And they still do today. Marge only admitted that Graf was even greater than her.
@@carrerau7138 Oh I absolutely do not think that is true. "Real tennis fans". Oh boy. I dont even think its really fair to compare the era from that far back. Totally different style of game, speed etc. Its like those that say "Babe Ruth was the greatest of all time" I use to be one of those folks.

I started watching women's tennis in 1981. Not only exciting as it turned out, but Chris and Martina ruled. I became hooked on women's tennis in the 80's. Watched every match I could on TV and at the Canadian Opens in person. So much fun. I have the photos! They were stars. Jaeger, Manlikova, the Maleeva sisters, Zina Garrison. It wasn't the wide draw it is today, but the talent stands true and firm. Steffi changed everything. It was exhilarating.
Beautiful and moving tribute. I miss the marvellous serve/volley tennis from the 70s and 80s at Wimbledon. Navratilova, Novotna, Edberg, Becker, McEnroe - absolutely stunning play, a lot less boring than endless baseline rallies now!
Martina is theGOAT!! I don't see how anyone can rank Serena higher just because she has more slams? I MEAN who can win Wimbledon 6 straight and hold the most wins there 9 and be ranked lower? Chrissie should even be ranked higher than Serena because of her unimaginable record on clay and the most French titles! Love both Martina and Chrissie!!!
Still can’t believe the obnoxious Graf cheered like a lion at 6:22 after a mishit ball and a NETCORD WINNER gave her the championship. Disgusting sportsmanship. She also was the most fortunate player of all time to receive a walkover into the USO Final of 1988. She never won a “true” calendar year Slam because she didn’t have to play and win 28 matches; only 27.
Chris would get bageled if she had played that SF against Graf in 1988 us open.lol🤣🤣🤣 She got fever in the night before playing that SF because of fear of Graf.😉😉😉
Martina navratilova was and still is the best woman players in tennis history. No other player get even close to her skills. GS titles don't tell the whole truth. Steffi and serena may have more titles but martina is far more better player. That's all.
Steffi is 9-9 H2H against Navratilova. Even though Martina played most matches against a 16/18-year-old baby Steffi. And even though 89 % of their matches were played on fast surfaces favoring Martina (who avoided Steffi on clay and slow hard courts after her loss to 17-year-old Steffi at the FO 87).
Not a huge tennis fan, But I was there back in the day only once, when it was possible to wait over night. Saw Martina win her first at Wimbledon, and Borg beat Jimmy Conners in a semi final I may have been a year out here. The year Borg beat Tanner in the final
I agree. I remember watching it thinking the exact same. It would have been her 10th Wimbledon singles title. But look how remarkable her career has been since, in doubles and winning her last major title in 2006 in the US Open. Still plays at invitation mixed doubles up to this year 2023 and hopefully next year too!!
at the time many people found it suspicious how she went from being pudgy to then all of a sudden being shredded with veins popping out all over the place. many suspected some chemical help...its just one of the reasons why Chrissie was always a way more popular figure
If anything the grandslams for men's should go down to best of 3 if they wish to grow their fan base. It's just too long and for the average fan, they only enjoy the 5 setters from the big rivalries.
