Mandlikova won 4 Grand Slam titles but is hardly ever spoken about today.

they always talked about Hana like she was the most inconsistent player alive- but if a player had her stats today, they'd be #1 for 3-4 straight years.... (today there's zero consistency). Not only did Hana win 4- she got to 2 Wimbledon finals, and 2 other US Finals- 8 total finals and a slew of SF and QF. She'd flake out and lose in the 3rd round once in a while, but top 10 players today seem to always lose before the 3rd round.
@Doseof Reality Here is your dose of reality : Mandlikova was insanely talented but too often inconsistent, therefore winning 4 Grand Slam titles. Evert and Navratilova were insanely talented, therefore wining 18 Grand Slam Titles each!

Steffi was and remains the bridge between the two eras --- the finesse and court craft of the 80's and the power/athleticism of today.
What a good sport Martina was - win or lose, she looked her opponent in the eye at the net, gave a warm handshake and often congratulated the winner if she'd lost.

Evert - Navratilova. The greatest ever rivalry in tennis, men or women! They met 80 times, of which 60 were in finals! 43-37 to Navratilova.
Hana Mandlikova doesn't get enough credit. She was the only woman in 1980s to win slams challenge Evert & Navratilova. Her 1985 US Open win beating Evert & Navratilova back to back in semis & final incredible.
oh how I miss the Serve\Volley game of Sukova, Navratilova and Mandlikova. So Impressive
I was born in 1982. I loved watching and playing tennis in the '90s. I wish I could have been old enough to have fully enjoyed '80s tennis in real time.
Evert only entered the Australian Open 5 times in the 80s and made the final each time, winning twice. That's seriously impressive
Crazy!! She didn't compete in approx 10 AO tournaments. Imagine how many more she could have had on top of her 18 Slams. Martina too!
This is one of the reasons why the GOAT debate is very complicated. Each player had their priorities. Chris Evert and Martina didn't prioritize the Australian open, the could have won more slams. Steffi Graf was still competitive in 1999, maybe she could have won a slam or two, even though we might never know. Serena also didn't play much tennis between 2004-2007 which was supposed to be her prime. She decided to chase other interests. Martina Navratilova also prioritize doubles and mixed doubles. Maybe she could have won more slams if she had focused on the singles only. I feel every era had it's best.

Both Martina and Chris skipped multiple majors- Chris 10 Aussies and about 7/8 French (and she was the Queen of Clay!) and Martina 7/8 of each (Aussie used to be on grass and Grass Queen Martina skipped about 5 then)- they could easily be in that 22-25 total range had they played all the majors like they do today.
Evert skipped the French 3 times (1976-78), not 7/8 times.
@@leolight5369 Chris first played the US Open in 1971- so after that, she skipped the French 1972, 76, 77, 78 and 1989... so- 5, not 3 or 7... the 3 you mentioned were almost guaranteed she would have won- so 10 French would have probably been hers
@@aagold76 Chris may have played the US Open of 1971, but she didn't joined the WTA until after she graduated High School, so she didn't skipped the French Open in 72, she was still in school, which is why she didn't play. She did skipped the French in 89 though. As far as the Australian Open most players back then didn't compete because of the schedule being during the Christmas/New Years holidays. In 80s after they moved it up in December, they started having a full draw, from 1981 onward, they draw was much better.

Sukova hardly "dominated" in the finals. She never won one.
Really up until 1988, the Australian open was very much the poor relative of the grand slams. It wasn't held at all in 1986 and the women didn't have a full 128 draw until 1988. Many of the top players skipped the tournament. Apart from 1986, Evert for example didn't play in 1980, 1983, 1987 or 1989 and she said to Martina Navratilova after her first win in 1982 "Thank God I've won, it means I don't have to come back". The men's event also had weaker draws with the likes of Borg, McEnroe and Connors regular absentees.
A nice idea to show the match points of the 80's, but the background music is annoying and superfluous in my opinion. Please also think of the people who are very sensitive to noise. Thanks.

80’s were pretty much about Czechs only in finals😂 maybe thats why they are still successful now🎉

I noticed chair umpires don’t announce championship point wins as “game, set, and championship” anymore. Why’d they discontinue this? I thought it was pretty cool
sad they didn't hold the tournament in 1986- they switched from holding it in December in 85 to January in 87... Martina probably would have been the favorite- she was on a 50+ win streak 12/86 and it was grass... only 3 majors in 86- Martina Wimbledon over Hana and US over Sukova, Chris- the French over Martina.
Yes, a shame for Martina. She also didn’t play AO 1978/79, the years she won Wimbledon and would have been a likely winner again on grass.

Venus Williams would have benefited a lot in the Australian open in the 80s since it was played on grass. Roger Federer and Pete Sampras would benefit as well. These situations make it difficult to accurately compare different eras
Sukova was the most talented player never to win a slam. She should had won at least two with her game but seemed a bit mentally brittle.

That guy telling Martina she was #1 was lying to her. She finished #3 in the rankings behind #1 Evert-Lloyd and #2 Tracy Austin! It was quite the competitive year with those 3, plus Mandlikova, Jaeger and even Shriver making lots of finals!

How on earth is Venus at her prime better than Navratilova and Graf? Not a chance.
Graf literally won 5 Slams in a row and Navratilova won 6 in a row. Steffi had a year in which she was 86-2 and Navratilova had a year in which she was 86-1.
Both of them are way better than Venus in their prime, sorry.
