There is something so utterly genuine about this woman, authentic to her bootstraps. Her fierce rivalry with Chris Evert, which morphed into the closest friendship two women are capable of, is absolutely inspirational
Women are just so superior to men, and this is just another example. Women in sports compete as ferociously as men, and yet, have the clarity to see the sport in the context of their bigger lives. That they can laser in and realize there is something richer here to be gained. Chris and Martina, Martina and Chris, are a cosmic example of why nothing and no one is by accident.
@@hugochny I partially see your point but I think it’s more down to the content of the character of these two splendid individuals which transcends their gender (there were plenty of unpleasant women in top flight tennis). At their peak they hated losing against one another and Martina’s coach, Nancy Lieberman, even encouraged her to distance herself personally from Chris to make beating her feel more satisfying. Evert once said the only opponent she didn’t feel so bad losing against was Evonne Goolagong because she was just such a lovely woman it was impossible to dislike her even fleetingly.
I think it may be in part to her upbringing in communist Czech, a cold fact only society but added to a wonderful person, allowed to blossom in the US. I love that she loves being american and supports women in sports, her position on trans.
Martina is 66 years old, but looks like she's 50. She must be doing something right in her fight against cancer.
