    there are people saying that Swiatek got tired because she is playing doubles. Navratilova played singles, doubles, mixed doubles and won almost everything.

      Yes, but to be fair, I would say the sport is a lot more physically demanding now than back in Evert and Navratilova’s day.

    • @onetwocue
      @onetwocue 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since Swiatek is out, she'll probably be written off just like Kenin, Stephens and Ostepenko. Swiatek, although great just isn't marketable to even get a Gatorade, Nike, or even a make up commercial.

    • @tennissir1986
      @tennissir1986 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Swiatek has one a Slam - if she wins one or two more or stays at year end number one in the future for a while - the sponsors will be glad to throw money at her - plus she has a real personality - unlike say Sharapova who was cold and selfish (not to mention a cheater) - who got lots,of,endorsements as a Russian citizen.

      @@onetwocue I don't think so, just look at her and Barty's followers for example, Swiatek has a giant hype. I'm a fanatical fan of Iga and Teichmann, the current players.

      That is what I always said: I may be a HUGE fan of Stefanie Graf and I totally respect Serena‘s achievements, but nobody has won as much in singles, doubles and mixed as Martina, stayed in the top 5 for about 20 consecutive years. She is the ultimate player and nobody will ever surpass her.

    • @tellmeto
      @tellmeto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tobiaskluke7094 so many of martina's and chrissy's wins were tournaments where they barely played 2 matches and the competition was non existent, hence why their numbers are staggering. Regarding doubles, no one adds those numbers when factoring goat. It is what you achieve on your own and not with a partner that counts. Not to mention doubles field strength was even lower than singles. Just like Court's asterisk on some of her aussie open wins, some of graf's wins when seles was away for 2.5 years, serena's wins after henin clijsters hingis retired and venus was ill...they all have their strong points for goathood and their asterisks.

    • @tobiaskluke7094
      @tobiaskluke7094 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tellmeto True in some point, but it’s not the great’s fault the competition is low. Who knows if Hingis would have such excellent results from 97-99 had Graf still been healthy and around. Martina Navratilova still won 40 more tournaments (after she lost the No. 1 spot to Graf in 1987, aged 31 already) until 1994, in a time where Sabatini, Capriati, Sanchez and Seles were around, she was able to beat 17 year younger Seles in some matches when Seles was in her prime. Some players don’t even win 40 tournaments in their whole career. Sure, she was way ahead in the early 80s and the competition was low, but that is because she defined new fitness and athleticism standards which the others did not really follow until Graf around who herself was fit as a gazelle. Actually every one who becomes super dominant has something that rises him or her to the superstar level - until the others adapt their game to it. That is what made Graf dethrone Navratilova, that is what made Seles dethrone Graf later. Some kind of super”power” that was new at that point that the others did not have.

    I really love this Chris Evert interviews.
    One thing that hurts WTA now is the issue of top players treating the rest of tournaments as only warm ups for grand slams, and most of the time, pulling out of the other tournaments. I wish they learnt from these two to treat all tournaments with respect and speciality that they deserve.

    • @1958mlvc
      @1958mlvc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of that is due to the racquet technology and how some of the courts put so much stress on the athletes’ bodies. If they played as often as Chris and Martina did back then, a lot of the top players would constantly be injured.

    • @kevinlakeman5043
      @kevinlakeman5043 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From my experience, players have done that for decades. Not sure how you somehow know how all the 'top players' are thinking about every tournament they play in. I certainly see Swiatek and Sabalenka trying to win every tournament they play. I'd say much the same for Collins, Gauff, Pegula, among others. As for pulling out of tournaments, I rarely see it more than maybe twice a season for the top players, as there's the threat of losing ranking points, as well as a possible title lost. Plus, the season is insanely long w/ more mandatory tournaments to play than in the 70's & 80's.

    Both, Mrs. Evert and Mrs. Navratilova are beautiful females. Now aged and matured but they look breathtaking! And I love myself being a man! Besides this, those two women are living legends who bring so much joy to mankind when they played! Martina was one of the greatest fair playing professionals and I adore ( I'm in my fifties) the great time of Navratilova, Evert, Graf, Seles, Sabatini and Hingis! At the same time the world enjoyed McEnroe, Borg, Connors, Edberg, Wendel, Becker and all of them! This days are never coming back but to remember this big time brings always joy and pleasure! We're living in times of TH-cam. So everybody can watch the great matches from the past in the history of tennis! Thank you very very much for uploading this! These are things we really are never privy to as fans. It's also wonderful to see all the love and support Martina received from the other top tennis players and the amazing relationship these two have developed over the years. As a lesbian and foreigner she faced many more challenges than other top players on the tour. It's nice to know that she felt supported by the others.

Even when you weren't playing against each other, tennis was special when you guys were a part of it. Monica Seles was the only other player that gave me that same feeling. What an opportunity to see these 2 greats having one on one.
    We will never see another women's rivalry like Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in a hundred years.
    More often then not, both this great champions will meet in the final and their head to head stands at 43-37 in Martina's favour.
    Both are the leading winners of WTA singles titles in history, with Martina at an astonishing 165 titles and Chris at 157 titles.
    Both have 18 Grand Slam titles each, with Chrissie's career spanning from 1971 to 1989 and Martina from 1973 to 2010.
    Hypothetically speaking, Chris would have won 28 Grand Slam singles titles had Martina not been around ( Chris lost 10 GS finals to Martina ) and likewise Martina would have won 23 GS titles had Chris not been around ( Martina lost 5 GS finals to Chris)
    Their rivalry spanned nearly 2 decades and there was never a moment when there was any animosity between the two whenever one lost to the other in the final. More often then not, these two were the only ones remaining in any tournament that they competed, and one would console the other in victory and defeat.
    Martina always wears her heart on her sleeve but Chris never threw a tantrum.
    What role models these two are....miss them and love them to bits.

She had an athletic exterior and what’s inside is a warm, sensitive, wise, woman who I’ve admired ever since. I’m so glad both women discovered their cancer on the early side.

    I must say "the big 3" rivalry is the only one that gets close to Chrissie vs Martina. But the chemistry between these two champions goes beyond the courts, the media, and the marketing... it feels so human and effortless, something inspiring we don´t get to see that often these days.

    I remember being in junior high and watching Martina play. My aunt who knew I was gay long before ever coming put gently hinted Martina was in a relationship with a woman.
    It struck an emotion that drove me to play tennis, it was my escape and to see someone like me play at that level, be accepted (for the most part) and publicly stand proud got me out of bed numerous times when I felt alone.
    I continue playing tennis with my partner today, not so much a serve a volley game like when I was a teenager. The tennis court was where I found my confidence and most importantly learned I was like able, and to love myself.
    I don’t know of a professional athlete today that is at the same level that is a role model for the young LGBTQ community like Martina.

    Martina was spot on. During the 70's to the early 2000's Grand Slama counted less than they do now. Players were ready and looking to win every single tournament they entered as everyone was chasing that year end no.1 ranking. Now people can literally only show up for the GS and everything else is seen as warmup tournaments

    I'm embarrassed to say that I'm old enough to remember when Martina defected from Czechoslovakia, her post-defection weight gain, those pinstriped Ted Tinling tennis dresses with the wide navy lapels (I had a poster of her hitting a backhand volley on my bedroom walls--and a Billie Jean colander), and Martina calling herself a "chicken head" in exasperation during a Wimbledon final and Bud Collins talking about how she'd picked up on American vernacular. To me she is the GOAT.

      Chris numbers are staggering beyond both sexes 52 of 56 grand slam semifinals or better 34 finals 18 wins
      Only player to beat 2 and 3 ranked players 6-0 6-0 Martina and Tracey
      13 straight years winning grand slam tourney
      Best winning % male or female
      If chris or Martina played Aussie open more frequently both would be above court over 24 grand slams chris easily could have swept 70s Aussie open
      Chris had more grand slam runner ups of any player in history (like Madonna has most singles that peaked at 2 on billboard hot 100)

    Thank you for the interview. There could be a documentary done of Martina and Chris, how they came into tennis and then became rivals. Also how they became friends. Facinating how the women on the tour supported Martina during that difficult time. Also interesting insight of Martina about the press coverage. I was one of the people watching and wondered why there was so little info about them at the time. Thank you both for all you have done for women. When filming or interviewing Martina please make sure that her camera is set slightly looking down on her (this avoids the double chin thing for women).

      There is actually an excellent ESPN 30 for 30 called Unmatched that is much longer and has them spending the day together and chronicling their careers, their rivalry, and friendship both on and off court. It's one of the best of that whole 30 for 30 series.

  • @johniii8147

    Without a doubt the greatest rivalry in history regardless of sport. They built the whole interest in the game ( with BTK, support) for women's tennis. The girl's today don't know their debt. What's most amazing is how they ups and downs in their relationship, but despite the fierce rivalry that came out of it as truly great friends. What made it great is they respected each other and the end of the day it came out pretty even. Both 18 grand slams and they were within 2 or 3 matches in 80 of the total record against each other.
    Both are class acts and kept pushing each other. They need more of that now especially in the Women's game where no one can keep it together for being champions.

      @@scswp6945 i really enjoyed watching that spectacle, all the greats of the past andn present, with Mary Carillo and Shriver cracking the jokes, but, to me, it seemed so very wrong to almost whitewash out 7 championships at Wimbledon, 377 weeks at #1, a Golden Slam, so effortlessly. Surely they can't be so 'offended' that Steffi doesn't live her life in the spotlight, or turn up to take bows for 2 weeks every summer, that they just pretend she doesn't exist ? It was lovely to see players like Dinara Safina or Jelena Jankovic make an appearance, but when the history of the sport is written, which of these players will be remembered most ?

      Especially when it was a contribution of such magnitude! They ignored one of the greatest of all time! I found it shocking in all honesty. Even if Graf has no part in the WTA now, to ignore what she achieved completely is a decision that, to me, is rooted in spite. At least there is consolation in the fact that Steffi likely couldn’t have cared less.

Almost unimaginable, but it IS Ms. NAVRATILOVA! She truly did it the HARD way...serve and volley game, with missiles being fired by Chrissie, Steffi, Monica and others, as she charged the net! WOW is all i can say. So, no disrespect to Serena or anyone else, but MARTINA NAVRATILOVA is the GREATEST of all times! AND THAT IS A FACT. Look at the numbers..Martina PLAYED EVERY EVENT (Singles,doubles, and mixed) of the tournament and WON the majority of them. And a she didn't get an extra day to REST between the semis and finals at the US OPEN like they do now days. Anyway, you get the point.
