      True, but on the flipside Ford and Ram have gone to boxed frames rather than C frames. Also both Ford and Ram are putting lockers now. GM was first to both. IFS on GM HDs are great with for towing and for driving around without a load and great for highway speeds with or without a load. Straight axles trucks need a load to go over 50 mph safely, at least that is what Ford and RAM are both saying in response to their class action lawsuits for death wobble.

    So you're wondering why ford sells more: Ford sells more because they sell a ton of stripped down fleet rucks for next to chicken scratch, which gets them sales tallies. GM doesn't offer anything less than a base equipped truck, even in fleet sales. You simply get a base truck, not a bare bones unit. You get what you pay for, though. A Chevy/GMC is way more reliable, more comfortable, bore capable truck. Also total both of the GM trucks (mechanically the same) together, and the sales gap closes dramatically. I drive a '97 Silverado 2500, and love it. Mine isn't as advanced as the new trucks, but even mine is stiffer than the Fords of it's day, and has the Eaton locking rear (GM RPO code: G86) in mine. It's great on slick and icy roads, which is what the roller ramp in the video simulates.

    • @themechanic345
      @themechanic345 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually Ford is generally more expensive than GM products. They get more sales because they offer a more dependable truck. GM's and Chryslers have "walk home" innovations. That means the ECU prevents the vehicle from running if it senses that one little thing is wrong to prevent any possible damage. Fords, though, don't have that. Which means they're not nearly as sensitive and therefore, much more reliable.

The GM diff is a big plus. Dodge body mounts hold about half gallon of rain water in each one. If you own one go loosen the body bolts and see. Just sayin. @coreyschmidt1647 8 ปีที่แล้ว +234

    Wow a biased hill climb test putting trucks with open diffs up against a truck with posi. What a fair test. And the frame twist test is a bogus test. Ford looked to the big rig industry for engineering advice when they built a truck with a towing capacity of more than 22,000 pounds. You buy a dually to tow with, not go rock crawling. A rigid frame on a heavy towing vehicle is not a good thing, it tends to break things like driveline components and suspension parts. Ive got news for anyone who disagrees with me, you're never going to find a semi with a fully boxed ridged hydroformed frame. Even a heavy haul tractor with a double frame and a tag axle still flexes a lot to prevent damage to other components.

    • @rex4765
      @rex4765 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The frame isn't supposed to flex. It doesn't have a independent limited rotation bed. The suspension and shocks are supposed to absorb and compensate for that, any time something bends when it's not supposed to, it weakens it.

    • @robertvanluven3574
      @robertvanluven3574 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I like how they didn't even give the Dodge an attempt at the 2nd test. lol I'm a ford guy mostly but I do like Chevy also. The Chevy seats hurt my back after long trips. Fords are comfortable to me. As far as the tests go, anyone who would put their truck in that type of loading situation in test 2 would be nuts to begin with. According to the books on all three trucks, loading situations should be with the tires secured on the ground. I don't think the ford was "sagging" it was flexing and you want it to flex to maneuver the terrain. Just like a bridge flexes with heavy loads on it vs. being stationary and breaking.

    A solid frame would snap all the welds down the line.

    I have always been a die hard Ford guy. This time around I bought the Ram/Cummins. Why? I liked the truck better. They offer exactly the trim level I want, the interior is simple and the controls intuitive, the exterior is the most 'truck' of the trucks, and that Cummins is all business. I tow with this thing... set the cruise at 67 mph and it almost never shifts down no matter how steep the grade, boost comes up to 20 psi and up the hill she goes! The exhaust brake is the coolest thing since they put pockets on pants. No regrets here.

    Okay this is the dumbest thing I have ever seen... They have rollers on the fucking ramp... The denali only makes it up because it has a limited slip rear differential and the left ramp has rollers 3/4ths of the way up (and that is the power tire on open differential base model trucks like the Chevy Silverado.) The denali is the top of the line truck made by general motors chevrolet and they took a dodge 2500 Cummins and a base model f350 and put it against it. This is just another foolish Chevrolet add scheme to win the hearts of foolish people that don't know basic mechanics of a truck...

    • @zackattacktba
      @zackattacktba 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little research might do you good. The gmc being tested is the base model. Denali is not a performance package, it is a luxury interior package.

      Tyler Grenier wrong again. The z71 package is not standard on Denali trucks. All these gm trucks have the Eaton G80 electronic locker. • @cullumsforever
      @cullumsforever 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's ABSOLUTELY no benifit to having an unlocked diff. If you want to be in control of your truck that's understandable, buy a manual rather than an auto, ect. But to actuall want your diff unlocked under ANY circumstance is just plain stupid

    • @Polarbear93
      @Polarbear93 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Krissy Cullum There is a reason to have an unlocked diff. whenever you are turning one wheel will have to rotate more than the other to go around the turn if your diff is locked then you will be dragging a tire through part of the turn which will lead to imbalanced tire wear and premature failure. if there was no reason for an unlocked diff then they wouldn't make one

    • @danhellerjr
      @danhellerjr 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Krissy Cullum Have you ever tried to back up a trailer with a locked diff? Or any kind of tight maneuvers for that matter? Apparently not. Anyone who regularly uses their truck to do such things will tell you a locked diff is a pain in the ass and being able to engage it only when needed is best. Yeah, I know it's SUPPOSED to only lock when one tire spins but I wouldn't trust it - that thing would probably engage for no damn reason at the worst times.
      I'm pretty sure an automatic, mechanically locking diff is cheaper to manufacture & sell, but not nearly as user-friendly & compliant.

      3500's will have more weight though. Wouldn't the weight be distributed in the rear anyways? I'm not talking like I know what I'm talking about, but that seems logical to me. As for the locking differential, you could be right on that.

    • @scottb8907
      @scottb8907 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weight doesn't matter in this case. The rear axle is open, and as soon as one wheel loses grip, all the power is distributed to that wheel causing the vehicle to slide back down the hill. There are rollers on one side of the ramp to simulate ice/mud/slippery stuff.

    • @Tgrovez
      @Tgrovez 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think the power would seek the path of less resistance, depending on which tire let go first

    • @dundonrl
      @dundonrl 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      they were probably testing the Ram with the limited slip, if so, it's AAM's version of the Torsen gear type limited slip, and with 1 tire on a slippery surface it will transfer 50% of the torque from the tire that's slipping to the tire that's gripping, since it's on rollers 50% of no traction is still no traction. What you HAVE to do is apply a little bit of brakes to give that wheel some torque so it can transfer that torque to the tire with grip. (the HMMWV has the same problem since it also has Torsen type limited slip front and rear, and in driving school taught by the USMC you are taught to apply a little bit of vehicle brakes to get it to transfer torque to the tires with grip)
      I tested this on my 2012 Ram with the limited slip, jacked one tire up in the air and applying my brakes after a bit, the tire that was on the ground got traction and drove the vehicle off the jack..

    I may be wrong but I believe the gate on the Ford truck is locked (3:00). That's why the guy couldn't open it. I don't know the exact name of the components in the locking mechanism, but when the gate is UNLOCKED, whether it is jammed or not, you will still here a click once the handle is lifted up about halfway. I didn't even here the click. The absence of sound during the full range of movement of the tail gate handle is an indication that the tail gate is locked. The only sound made was when the tailgate handle was lifted all the way up to its mechanical limit. Try this on your own vehicles and listen for the sound. Just my observation.

    So in a flex test, and off roaders know this test, more flexibility is better. However, doing a flex test on a big ass dually truck which most will only see some dirt roads with possibly a few good holes is pretty irrelevant. .....js

    Why Ford sells more? They TOW more. Why would you torque the body hazardously? If you drive on terrain that's as dramatic as those offset ramps, there are better trucks to do it with... Knuckle head.

      it doesnt matter what you say its quite obvious that the gm took more time to put quality into all their trucks rather than ford slapping a bunch together and saying their the best selling. i dont give a fucking rats ass if their the best selling im gonna buy a gm or chevy because i know that they are the toughest well built trucks you can buy.

    The reason Ford sells more trucks is because Ford is considered one brand while GM trucks have Chevrolet and GMC they’re not considered the same brand but if you add them together they probably outsell Ford

    If you combine the sales of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, they sell more than the Ford F-150. But since they are technically separate brands, they can't be combined for that purpose. Ford tried something similar for a while, when they took an F-150 and turned it into a Lincoln, but sales were shit so they stopped that pretty quick. It's similar to Presidential candidates. When you have someone run as an independent, Libertarian, Green, etc. All they do is take votes away from the 2 major candidates. The GMC Sierra is taking sales away from the Chevrolet Silverado so it can't win against the F-150. (Not intentionally of course). GM feels that it's better to offer a better selection than to race against Ford.

    I bet the ford was able to get off that twist test and the gate opened right back up. If Chevy is such the best why do we all pay out of our taxes for GM to keep going. Ford has been over a 100 years now and will always be the best. 38 straight years #1 selling BABY!!!
