You’re correct. Even to show a gesture of respect to Ipman was a big NO NO considering his background as a Japanese military commander. He risked his own position and self by even showing respect to Ipman, unlike Sammo, Tyson and the other rival Wing Chun master, who none of them wouldve had any consequences for showin respect.

Love how Ip Man's fighting style changes over the course of 4 movies, which was intentionally designed by the film crew. In Ip Man 1 he was alot more direct, fierce, liked using high kicks. By the 4th movie he relied more on technique than force as he was no longer as powerful physically. Top notch figth choreography!

I think they used the help of actual martial artists to get the right moves. In it's entirety, the movie's quite accurate about the different fighting styles like Wing Chun and Karate. I like how Ip Man kind of uses his own kind of Wing Chun, and makes improvements to it. It keeps it realistic, and his fighting doesn't get boring, so you always anticipate what move he's going to do next

I'm a big fan of all the films (doesn't mean I also don't have criticisms). I keep coming back to this fight out of all of the fights Ip Man has been in, because this one always stands out. In most of Ip's fights, he stops once his opponent has been disabled or incapacitated. This is not the case here. I don't think there's another fight in the entire series where he continues to strike his opponent long after his opponent is incapable of fighting back or defending himself. Fighting for revenge, with sheer emotion that looks to include anger is not a principle we ever see Ip fight by. This fight was personal. He wanted to show the General all the pain he has caused, use his fist to deal justice for the lives he has taken. The General and his soldiers have starved, beaten, and killed members of his community and threatened his own family. The lives of two friends who die as a direct result of this General's actions or his subordinates is everything we needed to know about why this fight was going to be different. I often asked "why go through all those extra hits and not simply take the General's life?". I think the General knew even before the final, withheld strike, that Ip could take his life any time he wanted. Ip knew that forcing him to live in dishonor was a fate much worse than death.
