in the movie, Jet Li's character was shown to be bilingual as he went to school in Japan (and able nab a Japanese gf) the old man was shown to be able to speak some Chinese
I wonder, too, if any of it was an old master imparting a lesson to a gifted student, a little "hey, slow down a bit, don't rush into a fight so blindly". The dialogue post-fight shows Kurata's character's wisdom and understanding of hand-to-hand combat, as well as his great respect for Chen Zhen and his master, it gave a lot more depth to the fight itself.

It's Karate vs mixed styles of Kung Fu, all these throws are in Karate as well as Aiki-Jiujitsu. At some point especially when they're blindfolded it looks like Wing Chun elements in both of them. But there's a lot of blocks that are similar in Karate.
@helioshyperion8077 Jet Li never learned Wing Chun so definitely not. He's playing to his strengths which are changquan or "long fist" and fanziquan which is "lightning fist". The second one in particular suits Jet Li especially considering he is blindingly fast. I learned wushu myself so the number of different kicks he is pulling off is no surprise either. My favorite martial arts movie ever honestly. There are ones better stories and more epic battles, but something about this has always stuck with me. It was the first "Jet Li" movie I ever watched specifically because he was in it. That part where he kicks the hay into the guy and he wigs out attacking the hell out of it has always made me laugh out loud, obviously intentional to lessen the tension and its perfect because it doesnt last long and it something youd actually do to disguise your movement.
And the part where they both hit each other on the head and almost mimic the rubbing of their hands on their head with the same expression on their faces.😂
I love how the old master, even though he's not taking the fight seriously, instantly copies the new and interesting moves from his opponent and turns it back at him.

Such a crazy fight scene, and really creative choreography. Granted, I always hated the SLIGHTLY overcranked cam speeds in Jet Li's films. I mean 6-12% is fine--great, even. Hilarious!!
One of the best fights on film, soo many lessons taught through this movie.
One of the the best fight scenes of all time.
I love this fight more than the final fight with the villain.

First time I hear about Kurata, but I can see why the comments are so exited. 😊
Amazing fight!!!❤❤❤
Ahh that was fun… felt like one of those great little 6 minute pro-wrestling matches that kinda sneak onto a show out of no where sometimes. Just some nice, simple fun by two great performers. Really fun fight. Good stuff.
This movie is something special. Which is rare for a remake. Got this and iron monkey at the same dvd kiosk in kings plaza in like 94 or 95.
Still one of the best duel fight in the history of cinema
My favorite martial arts movie ever honestly. There are ones better stories and more epic battles, but something about this has always stuck with me. It was the first "Jet Li" movie I ever watched specifically because he was in it.
That part where he kicks the hay into the guy and he wigs out attacking the hell out of it has always made me laugh out loud, obviously intentional to lessen the tension and its perfect because it doesnt last long and it something youd actually do to disguise your movement.
The battles throughout the film gave depth to the characters without much dialogue having to be said.
And the part where they both hit each other on the head and almost mimic the rubbing of their hands on their head with the same expression on their faces.😂
The story is actually a remake of Bruce Lee film Fist of Fury (loosely based on real story), and fight choreography is still unmatched.
I love how the old master, even though he's not taking the fight seriously, instantly copies the new and interesting moves from his opponent and turns it back at him.
4:23 I think this throw-combo is my favorite part of the fight. Just a cool technique.
They definitely went to a urban barbershop 😂 love the hairstyle 💯💯💯💯
better than 99% newer fighting movies.
In the days of vhs dubs and rips, I truly think people today are missing out on some amazing movies just because they don't have some flashing CGI burning their eyes every 5 seconds.
Rips?
I love that Jet Li plays Chen Zhen (fictional) and Huo Yuanjia (a real person), his teacher.
Think of Fearless as the prequel to this movie. 😆
@@zetareticulan321 should watch the legend of a fighter, it tells story about young huo yun jia, way before fearless timeline. also young yasuaki kurata is on the movie as well
3:28 How would they know if the other is still wearing the blindfold? xD
Honour.
2:07 that was insane
This is by far one of my favorite all time fight scenes in any martial art movie. Just brings back all kinds of memories, I was 9 when this came out. I remember seeing this and thinking how absolutely awesome it was to watch two masters fight like it was a game of chess and be really honorable about it
Jet li is a real martial artist and it shows.
@@jermainewright2556 agreed. I wasn't commenting on who was better between the two, they are both amazing. My point was compared to other big cinema stars, Jet Li was a proper martial artist.
jackie chan was no joke too.
Bruce Lee anyone?
@@MrJspecefini agreed. No one is saying that Jet li is the only one, there are others Sammo Hung is also a pretty decent fighter, so is Donnie yen. I would personally class Jackie Chan + Yuen Biao as very elegant dancers/acrobats/martial artists. Jet li has won Wuxia championship titles in the real world. Bruce lee is of course a legendary martial artist of many forms and a teacher too.
Would still be outclassed by an amateur boxer.
Incredible. Two martial arts masters in real life doing the dance! One of my favorite films of all time.
The fight that makes this movie stay for more than 25 years in the top ten martial arts movies such as the raid 1 & 2, enter the dragon, drunken fist, spl, ong bak 2, Flashpoint, ninja shadow of a tear and bloodsport. For me ... 😢
I've been always fascinated by this sensei haircut 💂♂
Love the way he plays with Chen Zinn in the beginning lulling him to underestimate him until the blows start raining down on him, LOL don’t trust old people
yeah, trickery even in mma today is the most used tactic. everyone is great at fightin but much of the game planning is to try to trick your opponent and take advantage of a mistake. dude played on his sympathy did did one of his most devastating flyin kicks lol
@@lowlowseesee he really goes at him lol
They're lightning fast! Never seen this movie before, never expected this fight be SO damn good!
Yeah that sounds way better. Nice one. You should send it to the distributor and see if they'll pay you to mix the whole film.
Thanks. I'm not sure why they couldn't have just re-sounded the original Cantonese and keep the original voices. But if I were to use Adobe Premiere or more sophisticated editing software, this combination probably would've synced better....maybe I should send this to distributors and convince them to release a better hybrid audio version haha
I used to watch these Jet Li films when I was a kid with my father. Those were good days. Great scene.
Such a crazy fight scene, and really creative choreography. Granted, I always hated the SLIGHTLY overcranked cam speeds in Jet Li's films. I mean 6-12% is fine--great, even. But once it starts hitting 16%, it's just too bloody much. THEY'RE ALREADY FAST. They don't need to be impossible to see or follow. 😕 That's the opposite of awesome storytelling, lol.
luckily you can play it on 75% speed here at TH-cam
Wahoo
one of the best fights ever made by two great artists. It's really exciting and thrilling just to watch.
