Ronny Chieng is having a moment. The already busy stand-up comic, Crazy Rich Asians cast member, and Daily Show correspondent, appears in Marvel's Shang-Chi, which premiered earlier this month and has settled in comfortably at the top of the box-office rankings.
While Chieng is a laugh a minute, he's serious about his watch choices - with a collection focused mainly on Rolex, Omega, and Seiko. Some of the watches came from his late father, while others were sought out as part of an enthusiast's path he credits to watching videos right here on HODINKEE.
Chieng's journey began with a humble Seiko 5, purchased online while he was in university, and progressed to his most recent purchase, the GMT-Master, with plenty of great stories along the way. This is your Talking Watches with Ronny Chieng.

This guy is hilarious and represents a lot of watch fans who are passionate about watches but don’t necessarily have the traditional, detailed knowledge base
I also think there’s something to be said that you don’t necessarily need to have an encyclopaedia of watches in your head to be considered a proper enthusiast. If you want to delve deep into movements, go ahead, but let more casual watch lovers enjoy the hobby too. After all, it’s a hobby. We’re all in this because of the fun we have and the people we meet!
Yea we don’t have to snobs about to enjoy it
@@Sabrermk42 Well said.
@@Dkguerilla but it definitely helps!
Perfectly said!
This episode is what I miss seeing on Talking Watches.
His jokes and comments tearing down the snobby/poser side of watch collecting and teasing Hodinkee for its role in it all, and leaving us with an honest view into the motives behind what is actually a very cool, decent and unique collection.
ronny got me in tears talking about his dad passing away and then suddenly hits with a "i'll sell it to the highest bidder" and now im laughing through tears. what a rollercoaster of emotions haha
every funny guy knows whats that about, hiding pain through humour - we all do it
You need help
Seiko "5" Origins:
In 1968 when it first went on sale, the 5 stood for the following five points.
1. Automatic winding
2. Waterproof
3. Day-date display
4. Dia Flex(unbreakable spring)
5. Dia shock (It won't break even when dropped)
(According to The Seiko Book / Tokuma Shoten)
Now they have seiko 5s without a day 😔
@@adam_kano and that's how the history became the myth.
"Let some things be mysteries, we don't need to google everything"
Touché
I say this to my wife daily.
Honestly, it's really refreshing to see Ronny bring HIS personality into Talking Watches. I love every TW but it feels like most guest, kind of adapt themselves to the mood of many other episodes. It's really cool to see how someone went down a totally different rabbit hole (Bruce Lee) i wasn't even aware of in the watch world. A funny, humbling, and thoughtful episode. Talking Watches has been absolute 🔥 lately
I love his sincere digs at self mportant Hodinkee
Ronny, if you're happening to read the comments like us common people. I am glad you made it man. You're a good soul.
"I'll sell it to the highest bidder in the comments."
I'm dead 😂 . This was A GREAT return to the old Talking Watches. Hilarious, down to earth, and a ton of passion for collecting the things he loves. Good job, team...
That was absolute comic gold.
Really? Dead? You must have one lame sense of humor.
Except, judging from his comments elsewhere, I think he low-key means it...
@@oedipus_tex8660 yea u must be fun at party
@@Chenrandyliu and you must bring the noodles
Love the collection and Ronny’s humor about a hobby that doesn’t have to be so serious all the time. Excellent episode
Exactly!, “ok this vintage root beer GMT I really gotta stop now before this gets out of hand”. So funny.
"Don't ruin this for me! Do not ruin this for me!"
I love this guy HAHAHA
If you watch enough episodes, there is always that scary 'Hodinkee' moment... 😝
@@TyroneBeiron Like has he disproven things in the show with his guests?
@@EthanRom I think it more like being confronted by some new detail from them as experts which blows the mind or changes one's mistaken belief that 'we've got the right watch'. and then you go, 'er... oh no!' It's about the viewer at home watching these and maybe realising they've been taken by some myth or such. It's not a criticism of the channel. Chill.
@@TyroneBeiron It's my irrational fear to be in Hodinkee (as if that'll ever happen) I show them my vintage DJ and then they proceed to tell me it's a redial. Also, it wasn't a stab at the show, I was just curious if maybe past guests on the show had wrong info on their watches and Jon had to correct them
@@EthanRom 😂🍻 ... I think they've always been gracious but Ron was being cute in this video, jokester that he is!
So happy to see a seiko 5 on talking watches
When I saw that, I took my own seiko 5 from the cabinet which I havent worn in probably 8 years, shook it a little, and to my surprise it still works
The snk381 is a cracking watch. A taste of MACV SOG without the price tag. ☺️
@@smurfette1681 just bought one for that reason I'm excited
Love the fact that he has both a Seiko 5 and a Rolex Ronny in his collection.
That’s talking watches at its best. Less coffee drinking and more real-life stories without too much pathos. Great 👍🏻
One of the best episodes by far! Genuine and relatable collection, and love the back story of each piece.
I just gave my dad a Ronny for his 70th birthday. I hope it’s many, many decades on his wrist.
Finally an episode that’s more relatable. And hilarious as well.
I also got the exact two-tone DJ from my Chinese Dad, aka “The Ronnie” lol
Humorous, charming, and an emotionally involved collector. I feel like Ronny represents many of us who got into collecting watches as an expression of our individuality. He is a knowledgeable guy, without being a reference number encyclopedia. Great to see talking watches is back! Let's keep this ball rolling.
Fantastic episode! Great of Ronnie to represent Malaysia, Singapore and all watch lovers!
A Seiko 5 on talking watches!
PURE CLASS
Wow, I've never heard of Ronny before but I could listen to him talk about his watches for hours. Hodinkee, give this man a job so HE can ruin some peoples lives too.
Talking watches also got me through the pandemic. I took a deep dive and now half my subscriptions are watch channels. Thanks/damn you/same.
Haha
Finally someone said this,
"The GMT Pepsi is too common "
Every watch community I knew owns a GMT Pepsi but it is a beautiful watch don't get me wrong.
I thought I was crazy when I couldn't see the appeal but almost every collection I've seen has one...
On principle I would never get one as I think Pepsi is inferior to Coke and I refuse to drink it.
Let's be honest, Rolex watches are way too common in general. The sub is everywhere, so are Datejusts and the Pepsi. But they are still beautiful, solid and functional watches no matter what
I prefer the GMT Coke bezel, myself.
The GMT Pepsi is the “Hey i got one too”
Watch for snobby collectors/resellers. However if you just have the one Pepsi GMT, then you got a great timepiece that will outlast a lifetime.
True, two-tone is such a thing among our Chinese parents' generation thing. My parents would rather have a watch in precious metal than stainless steel. Different mindset.
👏
me too! i love how undervalued gold and two-tone watches are. better for the rest of us to scoop them up.
Probably cause in their time mechanical wrist watches were mere tools. The ones who wanted to cherish them set themselves apart by going two-tone/precious metals.
Personally I would go the route of precious/special materials for dials/cases just so I can standout from the people who wants everything to look like a black submariner.
best of both world is to get a stainless steel w/ a golden or champagne dial
“Does anyone have the time?”
Loved this episode 👌
This is the best episode to date. Ronny is soooo good. Honest. May not be the biggest horologist, but who is. He's a true fan. Stories that come with it make it even cooler.
Love his honesty. I’m very similar with my philosophy on building a collection - I want the classics but don’t want what everyone else has. So this really resonated with me
What a fantastic guest! I love Ronnys attitude towards collecting. This was a tonic.
loved this episode!!
Did not expect to see Jinnyboy in Hodinkee’s comment section hahaha
We need a talking watches with Jinnyboy
Dayummm
"You just keep making everything look cool with your little coffee and watch shots...I know the tricks"
*Bark&Jack breathing heavily*
The best episode I’ve seen in a long time. This guest is endearing, relatable, and offers a great mix of earnestness and humor.
When someone is funny like Ronny Chieng, it just seems to flow out effortlessly like this. Very funny video! That shade at the beginning! LOL
I love his thought process behind each of his picks. Truly.
Most intriguing watch review clip I ever saw..... from bruce lee seikos, Vintage omega, vintage rolex, modern omega and rolex. Damn solid collection.
Good to see another Malaysian finding success outside of Malaysia. Stay safe and keep making a name for yourself!
awesome episode! Ronnie da man, Malaysia boleh!
Best episode in a while! Loved how much personality and self expression Ronnie has injected into his collection. This is what it’s all about!
This is one of my favorite Talking Watches, Ronny’s enthusiasm to collect what he likes is earnest and true to himself. Plus he’s hilariously funny to watch
LOVED this episode. Hilarious! Literally the most fun I’ve had watching Talking Watched ever
Agreed Mitzi. So damn good.
I like that your name is the same as a Kpop gg fandom
Right?!
Now this is a genuine watch collection of an enthusiast that shows deep knowledge of watches as opposed to throwing money at watches. Every collection speaks a lot of the owner. Nice collection.
Funniest Talking Watches episode yet. Would love to see Ronny come back
One of my favorite episodes so far; genuinely funny and entertaining and it's nice to see interesting (but for the most part) attainable watches
Wow wow wow, the best from Hodinkee, yet. Ronnie is one of my favorite comedians. The Daily Show is one of my favorites. And he loves watches, even better! ❤️
Watched all 73 of talking watches , this is definitely one of my top 3 (Bill Higgins, Maximilian Büsser, Ronny Chieng) with no specific order. And the best quote is from Ronny "Don't ruin this for me! Do not ruin this for me!". Suggestion to Hodingkee, I know Patek and Rolex is in your blood and you know every reference number , just don't say them , please write those talked watch reference numbers in the description section for people who need them.
Man what a great video. So fun. Ronnie Chieng is ridiculously funny. My daughter sidled up next to me to watch because I was laughing so much. Of all your watches I love the two tone Date Just that your dad gave you. I love that he was like "oh yeah, no problem, here ya go" with the only watch he ever owned. Amazing dad. Interestingly I nearly bought the modern version of that watch and at the moment of truth picked up a 36mm Wimbledon dial. I have to say my 36mm Ronnie is my absolute favorite watch. I'm going with Ronnie from here on out. Nickname is born.
Probably the most entertaining episode! Love Ronny Chieng
Ohh, Ronny bless him! You can tell his dad means a lot to him. He does that laugh-joke thing to ease the pain of losing your old man! I do the same thing too! I also wear my dad's speed master from the 80s! To remember him! The pain never goes away. You just get stronger!
Ronny has so many funny sound bytes from this episode. I don't even know which quote is my favorite. He's hilarious.
More like this. Relatable collection, funny, reasonably knowledgeable but not so much that those of us who can't rattle off the last 10 years of Rolex model numbers feel left in the dust.
What a fun collection! Love that he mentioned it being basic but special which I believe applies to a lot of people's collections! We are all a bit weird in our special little ways.
Best Talking Watches so far!
'Does anyone have the time?' 😂 Love the 'Ron'. As for his 'root beer', I'd ask him if he meant 'A&W' as a shout out to school days hanging around the joint in SG/MY... or if his Mum sees it, she would have called it 'kuih talam' (local Malay coconut and palm sugar dessert)... 😋 and if you put his Hulk/Root Beer together, Malays will see the Ondeh-Ondeh connection (green and brown Malay traditional dessert). So the truth is out: Ronnie has a craving for home 'sweets' among his watch treats! 😂 ... Loved what he said of the Ron (Rolex Date Just) as a tee shirt combo go-to watch! It's so 'Asian Uncle'. He must miss his Dad! (2018) 🕊
No pretentiousness....just an honest, solid collection he has fun with. Hodinkee: - More of This!
I had the pleasure of meeting Ronny and talked watches in D.C. Great guy and had lots of fun.
Shocked that this was easily one of my favourite talking watches episodes ! This man is so spot on on everything! Bravo and congrats!
This is probably the easiest and most fun to watch video in the Talking Watches series.
Loved this episode, especially when Ronny was talking about Bruce Lee and how empowering it was to be possibly wearing the same model watch he was wearing. Can totally relate with trying to build a connection with someone you look up to with certain pieces they may have used
When Ronny said moon earlier in the interview it reminded me of 'it is like a finger pointing away to the moon' from Enter the Dragon and lo and behold Ronny mentions Bruce Lee's Seiko! Cheers, Ronny for showing us your collection.
Haha this is one of the funniest talking watches clips. Ronny is awesome and has some good comedic moments. Plus he is into watches in a big way!!
This root beer is so retro and classic, much more stylist than the present root beer.
The present one is surely a future classic
@@rajmehta6210 No, I don't think so bec the dial is black, too generic, not representative. What makes this retro so classic is the brown dial and brown-gold bezel, it is a colour locked to 70s.
@@JS-ev4xc agreed. Imo a root boot also needs a jubilee.
A fellow Ronnie owner. An 80s 2tone Datejust (mine is white dial w/roman numerals) that was handed down when my father passed away in 1995. It is my most cherished watch for obvious reasons.
Let's start the bidding at...
HODINKEE is pure gold. Everyone else focuses on the dimensions, movement, specs. Not HODINKEE, though. HODINKEE may as well be Czech for story telling. Bravo, HODINKEE.
Couldn't agree more. My biggest watch pet peeve is when someone wants to talk about the warranty card and the little book. Get to the damn watch already!
Oh man, one of the best Talking Watches so far! Top 5 for me, and definitely the funniest one.
Good job, 'dink!
Same. Right up there with the Gary Shteyngart episode.
Very relatable guy, great content!
This guy is a riot. Fun episode, thanks. Nice to see a watch enthusiast that doesn’t take the whole thing too serious.
Great episode. I appreciate the emotional connection to his pieces. That bi-colored “6” on the Rolex GMT is an impressive typographical solution to having the digit land right on the color transition.
His father must be so proud to be able to entrust his life's work to his own son who matches his passion in horology. I hope this gentleman also has someone to whom he can pass it on.
Love that two tone “Ronnie” 🔥
This dudes hilarious! I love how he keeps talking to the camera. This might be my favorite episode.
Great episode! Love how an everyday person can relate to his collections. Wearing a watch is about you and the stories you have behind it. Sometimes there’s no story and that’s ok. Ronnie is 2 episodes in. Let’s have more 🙂
Dint know that you are from Malaysia until our Sultan Johor mentioned you! Proud to share the same hobby with you!
What a great collection, Ronny is genuine, down to earth and honest. Great video. Big thanks
What a fun interview. Great video. Thanks to you and to Ronnie Chieng.
This is just awesome. The reference to "Industrial Design" in the end is spot on! It's amazing how an object south of 39 little millimeters can invoke such feeling, emotion AND discussion. You have to love watches for what they are, were and will be...
The best yet !!
Ronnie got me looking for that Seiko 5! That watch is beautiful
We need more comedians in talking watches. It was a lot of fun!
Showing a Seiko 5 and a Vintage Seiko amongst those other watches! What a champ! A true watch lover!
Hodinkee was always at it's best with talking watches and this is a prime example. Great stuff.
Bringing some well-needed comedy to Talking Watches! This is the best one since John Mayer 2.
Great collection Ronnie. Someone this successful and still have a collection that’s not crazy outrageous
Big fan of Ronny Chieng
Always appreciate new episodes of "Talking Watches"
Down to earth guy. No pretentiousness or salesmanship
Great interview! Hilarious. Appreciated his honesty about his approach to collecting
Hands down the best episode!
This guy said something I can relate to..watches and watching watch content got me through the pandemic.
Love that two tone Ronny
when you are light-hearted everything is just better.. Just have to be yourself. Great simple watch collection, and so honest with his intentions when getting them.
Fantastic collection ! His outlook on collecting is so funny . Great guy !
This may have been my favorite episode to date.
Ronnie & Watches, great episode!
I always enjoy the personal stories behind the watches. Great episode and keep up the good work.
I have my late father’s 36mm DateJust on my wrist today, only a mechanical watch can be passed down from father to son, i can’t see that happening with an Apple Watch Series 3 for example.
Absolutely. An Apple Watch, unless it’s the very first edition, even if it’s just rolled out of production today, will be worth literally nothing in a few years. The firmware will be outdated within a year and that means it’s going to be unable to support updated apps. And don’t forget the Battery which will not be holding charge in couple of years.
Long live the mechanical watches.
Maybe a Solar G-Shock
Very fun episode and I’m convinced by most of Ronnie’s justification 😂
Genuine, authentic, funny. Great episode.
Best Talking Watches episode yet!
You know you've made it when you appear in Talking Watches with Hodinkee. Well done Ronny.
This is the best talking watch episode so far. Love the authenticity of the guy
Great interview. His interest in collecting timepieces is genuine, unlike most celebrities.
