5 tools for every field mechanic before you empty the shop tool box for a life outside.

  • I get asked, "what tools do I need to be a field mechanic?"
    These are 5 tools that I think every diesel mechanic should make sure is in the shop box before they even take to the drivers seat. I've traveled all over the world and you would be surprised how many field guys don't have these 5 tools.
    Get yourself a notepad and write these tools down. you're gonna want them if you want to be the hero on the landing.
    Have a great week, be safe and God bless!

      Couldnt agree more. With all the issues encountered with def systems its a fundamental part of the trouble shooting process. A lot of operators/drivers think they are smarter than the equipment they run and do stupid stuff like water it down or piss in it.

    40+ year HD road service here. Fluke 27 multi meter, a sealed mine approved meter, it has no problems with rain or snow, it can be dropped very tough. Although it doesn't do well if left on service bed it falls off, time to buy another one. It is my most used tool. It does wonders when that is the first tool reached for on the initial walk up to stalled truck, it sets the driver mind at ease knowing they are dealing with a mechanic who has experience. I use it for lift gates also.

    Thank you for the tips, sounds good. Fellow field tech here. I would add a coolant vacuum fill set up, due to a NRS, EGR systems. 55 gallon drum for hydraulic oil, to drain into, and reuse if needed. A 35 gallon drum for coolant, to drain, and reuse. Hard wood blocks to crib. Temperature gun for heating issues.

      I don't. Most of the time I know when I need that much storage. I also don't like to refill with what I drained out. A couple of good 15 gallon drain pans can get most repairs started.

    I work Avionics on aircraft as a profession. My go to multimeter has become the Fluke 3000FC because of the wifi capability. One of my supervisors bought the same snap-on meter in your video and it was about 100 to 150 dollars more comparing what he spent to what I spent because it was easier to justify the weekly payment vs the outright cost to his wife... LOL Anyway, these wifi enabled devices have an awesome range and several times I have saved time and another body helping me out by setting up my meter and sometimes our shops meter to connectors of a computer while flipping switches in the cockpit. BTW I paid $350ish from Grainger for my fluke where as my supervisor's snap-on meter was $500ish. Either way, great investment!

    Fellow field mechanic here! I enjoy your videos and look forward to future ones. I was thinking how interesting it is that we can do basically the same job but I have such a different list of tools in this category. I'm guessing it's what part of the country someone is in and of course the type of equipment you encounter. I'm a 20 year field mechanic for Cat in the southeast and I'm watching the video thinking...I never use that or I don't even have one of those. I'm thinking your point is these are some things that, if you need them, you better have em vs something that is a go to. I'd love to see a video on your favorite tools or can't live without type of thing. My top ten off the top of my head are:
    1) Milwaukee M12 stubby impact 2) Pocket screwdriver
    3) Milwaukee M12 90° die grinder
    4) Snap On 14.4 volt ratchets
    5) Pocket extendable magnetic
    6) Snap On digital test light
    7) MOUNTAIN long flex box end ratcheting wrenches
    8) Snap On battery load tester
    9) Streamlight rechargeable Pocket flashlight
    10) Blue Point hose pinch pliers

      Isn't that crazy. I dont know how many times I would fly in somewhere to help a tech. Ask them on the phone calls, before flights are booked, what the RPM is. You get an answer that is close enough to spec to give the benefit of the doubt that they checked it. Jump in the truck with tje guy and drive to the machine. Ask for the photo tach. Whats that? Well how did you measure RPM? SMH

  • @quazy1328

    In my 20 years this is what I think about this. Fluke 233 is a cheaper meter with a wireless feature. I have used my torque wrenches 5 times 1/4"-1", they are useful but you don't have to spend a bunch of money on them just make sure they are repairable/calibrate. Never used a impact driver, EVER. Photo tach's are necessary, my Harbor Freight one still works and I use it to check speed sensors and set pressures for hydraulic motors for fans and drives. Use a good electric one to pull a vacuum on a hydraulic tank, I have the large Harbor freight one and it outlasted any other one that I have been given brand knew, only issue was the switch melted and I got one off of one of the dead Cooler Master ones that was a month old.

    Hi Offroad Wrench,
    Great video you have produced here, I really enjoyed it, great content. I particularly enjoyed the part at 1:00 talking about tools on a field truck. I felt it was really informative and you really brought the point across well. Also discussing multi meters at 3:00 was really good and bluetooth feature. I am really interested in engineering and have had a career in engineering for over 28 years from everything from starting as a mechanics assistant to now a Project Manager. I enjoy sharing my skills and knowledge as well with others like yourself. I have provide training to others and had apprentices work with me to kick start their careers. Just started my own You Tube channel to share some of my knowledge and tips. Many thanks, Great job.

    Thanks for another well done video. I'd like to see how you have your other air vac set up- the TD260M. I've been looking around for something to pull a vacuum on my LX870D when I need it and like the looks of that one. From Air Vac they're pretty reasonable too, about a quarter of what Cat wants for it. Do you run a regulator with a pressure gauge on the input port of the unit? Seems as though that might be a good way to go so you could adjust the pressure from where you're working on the machine if you start pulling oil? Also want to second the torque wrench usage- I have gotten into the habit of torquing anything of importance- it's amazing how fasteners stay tight when they are set to the right value. Thanks again, be safe!

    • @offroadwrench5752
      @offroadwrench5752  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @J Nieves the best you can afford. If its an earthquake from HF. Than at least put that in your toolbox. Run big high pressure air to it and you will be satisfied until you can afford quality. I run a 1" earthquake and a 3/4" bluepoint. My 3/4 is probably 5 years older than the 1". Probably a 10 or 12 year old 3/4 run on big hose at 100 - 120 psi. It hits harder than most 1" guns. When it no longer out performs ¹" stuff I will send it in for a flat rate rebuild from my Snap-on dealer.

      Air Vac TD260M
      Great little heavy duty vac pump. I will try to find a good part number for my plastic housing one. Basically any Air conditioning vacuum pump will work.

      Maybe you could do a video using it and also the photo tac, also could it be used to pump fluids? I’m an automotive guy but I have a strong interest in anything mechanical but especially automotive diagnostics

      Im actually working on the website right now to make the merchandise available. Currently the only way to get them is by being a subscriber/follower on here or Instagram. I occasionally do give aways.

    Cheap mans version on the airvac, I take a small shopvac and duct tape around the fill. It's held anything I've ever used it with

    Not to be a stupid ass, but why ELECTRONIC torque wrenches or CLICK-TYPE?
    Thanks

    • @offroadwrench5752
      @offroadwrench5752  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ease and accuracy of electronic for the new age of torque to yield specs. I still have and use my click type regularly. When the torque calls for a degree of rotation, it requires a second tool.

    • @MikeVinKC
      @MikeVinKC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do make an add on tool that will do degrees if your already invested in other styles of torque wrenches so you don’t have to run out and buy a digital unit. Not as handy, but will save you some money .

      Worst decision I made was a snap on techwrench in 2003. Weak, fragile handle, couldnt hear the beep or feel the vibration in a noisy shop. Handle too large to fit in confined spaces and actually anywhere useful. And worst of all the batterys keep running out. Micrometer torque wrench everytime now. Cat technician 20 years.

      Thanks for the input. I agree that the volume isn't high enough. Mine vibrates well and the batteries are removed everytime.

    Why only five tools?
    When you need a certain tool, that certain tool is the most important tool.
    As far as my box of tools goes, there is not a single tool that is not important. 5 x more than I care to count.

    • @offroadwrench5752
      @offroadwrench5752  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the entire tool box is important and there is a lot more tools that a mechanic needs. These were just my suggestion of the 5 tools that should be in your tool box before you get into the field. They are also the tools that many do not have, yet are needed quite regularly. If I went through the use of every specialty tool, the video would be who knows how long.

    I'm going to call BS on setting hydraulic pump "beginning of regulation" using a "photo-tac".

    • @offroadwrench5752
      @offroadwrench5752  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct sir. You don't use it for setting the hydraulic pump. You use it to identify the RPM of the "motor" not the "pump". I did not say it was to set the "begin of regulation" of the "pump". I said it was for setting the travel. You must first set high displacement and low displacement of the travel motor or a pump before you can set begin of regulation.

    I dont mean to come across as over critical, judgemental or sitting up on a high chair as if I'm some high and mighty individual. Just a suggestion that you take a moment and breathe. I like your videos and you have good content but it is somewhat difficult to sit and listen/watch them due to the way you speak. You tend to do a little studder/stammering which makes your speaking difficult to listen to. You may want to do a practice run of what you are going to say. Then "ah", "um", and the pausing in your speech as if you are lost in what you are saying or searching for a word. I dont mean to sound like a dick or say you suck, I'm just saying that it would make for a much better video if you could clean this up. It's not as being in junior high and someone speaking in front of the class but it definitely makes it a little difficult for listening.... good info though.

    • @offroadwrench5752
      @offroadwrench5752  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I have been trying to work on my speech process. The videos are a great way to practice as if I'm speaking to a large crowd. Even when I'm prepared with multiple practice runs before I do a speaking event. I tend to get a little rushed. It's a situation that many do not get the chance to practice regularly.
      Thank you for watching the videos and I hope you stick around. Have a great day. God bless

    Dude Get the point. You must have said this is 5 things you should have 5 min before you said what it was. Here is an I Idea tell the 5 things then explain why cause at that time you will have interest instead of loosing people cause your trying to get people to watch longer. Just be honest and straight forward we will stay on till the end.
