How did you connect your LP120 to your receivers phono input without getting a humming sound. I’ve tried hooking up the same way, and I get a terrible hum which I think is due to no grounding,
A few articles I’ve read online say that if the turntable has a built in pre amp , then plug into an Analog input on the receiver (not phono). This of course will utilise the turntables pre amp, but if your using a decent receiver, this should Suffice pretty well,
As far as I know, most turntables that plug into phono inputs need grounding to prevent hum!

Hi, any chance your bought this turntable mostly because it's the closest low cost alternative to the classic Technics 1200? I have only one 1200 but was considering this for a second to see if I could mix from both of them as easily. You're using red, green, blue rca cable which is the same as red, white, yellow rca cable, I'm guessing. I'm glad you didn't say plug the audio cable into the PC mic input (pink). I can't tell you how many videos say to do that which is wrong. It sounds like to me the best way to go when my stereo systems is far away from my computer to use method 2, and that way I can output to PC anything plugged into the receiver including turntable, tape deck, mini disc deck, vcr, dvd player, cd player, etc. Now I also output from my PC to my stereo to use the receiver's amplifier. However I have learned that you cannot output from the receiver to the PC and PC to receiver at the same time or feedback will result. You would have to have a way to switch between the two.

Enjoyed the video and well done. A couple of very quick (and free!!) improvements to your set-up spring immediately to mind though. Standing your turntable on your speakers is not a good idea; record players are microphonic devices and pick up ambient vibrations which degrade the sound. If you were to move the deck off the speaker and onto an isolating shelf you'd hear an instant and quantifiable improvement in sound quality as the feedback loop from the speaker through the turntable feet is broken. This will not only improve the quality of your recordings but also your general listening pleasure every time you play a record. At the same time if you were to move your stereo nearer to your computer you could usefully reduce the length of your recording lead; Any cable can only degrade a signal so the golden rule for any audio cable is shorter the better. The above cost nothing to try except a bit of time and trial and error so what's to loose? Hope this is helpful!!

@stringchild1 Thanks for the good words Dale! if i had an extra $200 to spend, i'd have that Pro-ject you have! the speakers are Sansui AS-200's that i picked up from Goodwill for $7 each. they are 3 way speakers with 10" woofers. the cabinets weigh about 38 lbs each.
the cart is the Audio Technica AT-440MLa, i bought it based in it's rave reviews, and tracking ability's. no inner groove distortion, i'm very happy with it.

What is the best way to transfer vinyl to get the best quality? I am about to begin recording my vinyl collection but debating on how to do it. I’ve got the audio technica lp 120 USB turntable with AT-VM95SH stylus. I have a Sony str-av1020 receiver. I can transfer the record straight to cd via an external cd recorder. Then import the cd into my laptop as a wave file using iTunes. I’ve always been happy with the quality doing it this way. Or I could connect the turntable straight to my laptop either through usb or to the mic jack and record that way without the receiver bc turntable has internal amp. I use audacity and export it as wave that way. I don’t use editing filters to remove pops etc…I think using filters takes away from the natural sound. Or I can use receiver and connect to mic jack on laptop. I wasn’t sure if it makes difference when recording to laptop if I should use receiver or internal amp with turntable. My laptop runs on windows 10 with the sound card that came with it. Could the sound card lessen the quality bc it is not a top of the line sound card? I thought still sounded pretty good. But I just want to make sure I’m getting the best results before investing lot of time. Could the sound card affect the quality whether I connect through usb? Hopefully this makes sense it’s just there are so many ways to record…appreciate any feedback. And by quality I am referring to the natural smooth sound of the lp. I know the stylus can make a difference and that is why I upgraded to the shibata. My lps are in great condition, every now and then there might my a pop or crackle but I do not mind that. I love lot of bass. I am kinda just leaning towards recording straight to cd recorder via Sony receiver but want to make sure. Any tips on scanning lp covers? I plan on doing it with gimp art and scanning in portions and then put together. If there is an easier way with great results please let me know. Thank you!

@gilmour509 The cables from the Numark turntable came into the source input of the BBE, and the source output of the BBE went into the phono input of the receiver. Finally, the RCA/3.5" jack came from the tape record outputs of the receiver into the mic input on my Dell computer. I just had to set the input type in Audacity to microphone and voila! I'm still getting bad clipping and the record level is set to lowest, and that's something I need to figure out. It sseems to vary with the vinyl.

It’s tricky to place you turntable on the speakers. The movement of sound waves will make your turntable resonate, which disturbs the smooth readout of your stylus, leading to distortion.

Yeah, but why use your computer speakers? Plug the line out on your PC - where the speakers connect - into the tape return (tape in) socket o your amp. Then by listening to "tape" on the amp, you will hear the sound your recording on your hi-fi speakers. That way anything you play on your PC like youtube etc come through the hi-fi. The PC will still record the record deck, but you listen to the sound 'through' the PC.
Also for making videos it's better to use 48K rather than 44 (CD quality)

@mr230889 rubbish. It's essential for a critical evaluation. Why re-amp a source, degrade it, make it mono and squash the hell out of it? each has an application and he's one of the rare people on line who will take this step. You have to be able to appeciate the difference!!! It's like night and day.

    Part 2
I had a jack that came with my Numark turntable. It had two RCA audio cables on one side and a 3.5" cable on the other. So since I figured that I can run it from the reciever to the computer, we put the RCA jacks on the "tape record" outputs (I tried other outputs but they sounded a little tinny in Audacity). After fiddling around a bit, we ended up getting some incredible recordings running through the BBE, which I didn't expect to be able to do! Thanks a lot for this great tutorial.

why don't you use the USB? Is it not reliable? The most direct connection without extra circuit travel is the best for transparancy and lack of frequency shaping.

After watching the tutorial, I see my suspicions were correct. You have to use a receiver to get a good and clear sound from the turntable. I assume the built-in pre amp that modern turntables include is not powerful enough. Am I right? Do you believe I could get a good sound if I plug the RCA phono jacks into two different mono channels of a mixer? I bet it will sound too low. I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks.

you could maybe make some links to the products in the description if you have an amazon affiliate type account. I want to record my records but I don't have the female audio plug wire. If there was a link in the description, I would go buy it from that and you might get a few cents on each purchase. I don't know how it works, but other videos have them. Thank you very much for explaining this.

@gilmour509 Oops, I meant 3.5mm, not 3.5". lol. Anyways, as a followup to yesterday, I realized today that I ran the cable through the mono mic input by mistake. I never knew there was a line in on my computer, so once I put the cable there, I got full stereo sound! Oh, and I was able to eliminate two other problems: the vague background hum, and high recording volume that couldn't be put any lower in Audacity. Now that the BBE works, it can kick some real butt! It was worth all the struggle. :)

    Hi Evan,
I've been using the USB output on my Numark turntable to record the sound in my videos for a long time. On the weekend, I set up the BBE Sonic Maximizer, and I was looking for a way to capture audio without using the USB cable because the BBE was entirely analogue. I remembered about this video tutorial, and, I will say, it saved the day for me! I watched the first two parts with my brother a few times.

Has your turntable been modded? I'm trying to find videos of LP120s that haven't been modified so I can get an idea what it sounds like. I'm looking at picking up one of these, but I've heard that even if you switch off the preamp, it still colors the sound because it's still in the signal path.
Basically what I'm trying to do is see if the sound of an un-modded LP120 is good enough that I won't have to modify it to get decent sound. If I have to mod it to get good sound, I'll just end up going with a Debut Essential or a Debut Carbon.

I you want to have some fun with this...Take out the preamp...Wire it directly to the tone arm...Use a real preamp. Take off the platter. Unscrew the whole motor and float the motor on some thin foam....don't put the screws back in. Put the platter back on.
Get a protractor a cartridge over hang gauge and a scale to measure the tracking force. Put some "O" rings on the tone arm for resonance reduction...Get the heavier counter weight. Get a heavy stand for the TT. Level the stand. Then level the TT. Get a record clamp. Get a second tone are that has a bush on it and grounds to the preamp...Vinyl has a lot of static. Raise the platter with some thick mats and a cork one on top....to get the tone are parallel to the record. Adjust the Anti-skate by ear...You can use a CD to do it...But I've found by ear is better. I'm sure I've forgotten something...But now this thing sounds Awesome!
