Are German 🤔 discs good, for recording things I remember, using something similar to this, but it was a bit more complicating then Cool edit🎧, like I'm really good with cool 🎧 edit 1993☮️. Coz I been using it when i was only 9 years old. So for me to go to Audacity 🎧 , would confuse the heck out of me🤔🤷♂️.
The 💭German🤔 discs are the ones that have all different kinds of softwares. And Gizmo & GadgetsI think it even has a programs that has Synthesizers but the chances of me using it would be 🤔Terrible😂, that will only run correctly on XP 2002 sp3 since the day of Bi-Lo 90's, I'm Very Old School 🏫, the 80's music I wish I could copy them & my Vinyls and 300 cassettes & 36 vinyls...
This has to be the best tutorial for using Audacity with Windows 10. Thank you very much Craig. I have finally got round to digitising my record collection. Your tutorial was delivered at the perfect pace & was very descriptive. It was ideal for complete novices to learn with complete ease. Cheers, your a star. 👍
I am greatful to you for your thorough and simple to understand tutorial. My father recently passed away. During the 70's and 80's he directed a rag tag bunch of teenagers in a choral group. During that period, we recorded 3 albums at a local university studio. My father spoke during one of the songs while we hummed in the background. Thanks to your tutorial, I now have that song, and others, in digital form and am including them in a larger "movie" that will be played at his memorial service. Many of the members of the chorus will be at the memorial and I think there will not be a dry eye in the house, especially during that song; it was a favorite. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Great explanation. I had some old cassette tapes of my band rehearsals and converted them to .wav and mp3 files. I posted them to youtube about 9 years ago. 😊 I would suggest using 32 bit float, it will increase the dynamic range and prevent clipping.
Bro. This is BY FAR the BEST tutorial on this. I was doing this the hard way. Separating each file. Opening a new instance of audacity. Pasting. Blah blah. An album took an hour to do. I just did this method. Took 10 minutes! Too bad I found this video after my 400 album collection was done the hard way. However. Going forward this is my new method. I absolutely cannot thank you enough for this man!!!!
Many thanks Craig for the tutorial. Many of my vinyl records can’t be bought on Cd and this is a fantastic way of listening to my precious collection in the car on pen-drive and preserving my vinyl for much longer 👍
Hey Craig... Hope you are doing great! Nice of you to make all these videos to educate enthusiasts in your own nice special way... Keep it on and coming! Many best wishes & regards
Thanks again, I got an audio interface and tested it today. With your instructions it worked wonderfully. The sound is impressive. I hope I still have enough lifetime to digitize all my LP 🙂
A smashing video to help beginners get started, Craig, but I do feel that you left a rather important point out. The sound quality of the results you get is dependent upon the quality of turntable/arm/cartridge/pre-amp that you use for recording the record with. I have met a few people who seem to think that the quality of the vinyl playing equipment doesn't matter much because vinyl is not very good quality anyway ! Of course, we know that vinyl is capable of excellent quality when played properly on the best equipment but some people insist that they know different before they have listened. Perhaps it would also be worth mentioning that once the recording has been made that is as good as it can get, that you can not 'add quality' and improve the sound of an indifferent recording which has been clumsily been made with cheap equipment.
Craig - you mentioned in this video - that you were going to address eliminating the pops and crackles in another video - -did you ever do that - I can seem to find it easily. Thanks!
I have just finished making my first digital copy of a song. It was from a cassette, using a small boombox. I basically stopped your video as needed and did on my computer what you said and then continued. Took forever, but it worked very well. The song sounds better than my cassette copy. THANK YOU AGAIN!
Hi Craig, What a great video. I was searching for how to record songs from vinyls to computer, then I found your video. Your step by step instructions, espacially about the Audacity was really helpful. Many thanks dear brother.
Thanks for this. This will be a big project when I get round to it, I've asked my partner for a record cleaner for Christmas. Looking forward to it! I know I could just download most of my collection from Soulseek but this will be much more satisfying and give me a reason to listen to everything again.
Thank for this Craig, I finally decided to buy a turntable to listen to all my old '80s vinyl - I think I'll be following your lead - I've just downloaded Audacity onto my iMac... :-)
Thank you Craig. Your video has helped me learn how to rip my vinyl record albums to my computer, where I can easily transfer the mp3 files to a USB drive or even burn a CD. I picked up a used Music Hall USB-1 for $60, and it works really well. Thanks again.
Craig. Thanks for your rather comprehensive tutorial on archiving records (of course also all the others...:)). Just started with a Russian version of 1965 Rolling Stones record called Lady Jane, followed by John Cougar`s Americal Fool from 1982.... working with those seetings you recommend. Just amazing results! Thanks for sharing your ideas! Hello from Nürnberg Germany
I use a Sony CD Recorder RCD-W100. Over the years I've had three Panasonic PDR's and all were unreliable. But the Sony is amazing and the quality of this machine is quite obvious. When you've finished recording, just pop it into your PC and simply convert it to whatever media you like. Love your Videos.
I like how you record the music . In audacity I would not normalize but amplify to max -5. This way you still get dynamic range. I also have a stereo voice that sounds great and it made to split files while duplicating. I have not tried the file splitting feature yet.
I used to, and still do, record my lps on open reel tape. I do also record them on cd, but I like the sound of tape better when recording vinyl records.
I'm more advanced at this process than the audience that this is targeted to, but thank you for posting this. I recently did a search for like-videos to see what was out there and the few I found left a lot to be desired and weren't serious at all. Good job!
Awesome - thank you for this. Getting back into vinyl as my mother had asked me to a) clear out all the old records from the house as she's moving into a condo and has no room and b) transfer some of her favourites from way back into to digital files she can listen to without all the associated paraphernalia of a traditional 'hi-fi' system of yore. After reading up and obsessing over a reasonably good "budget" turntable I bought myself a Fluance RT82 (looks like you have one too?) which should arrive in a week or so. In preparation I have also watched your turntable setup video. Oh, yes - and subscribed! Looking forward to rediscovering the contents of boxes of records that have sat unused for a few decades.
I have a usb turntable and after I downloaded windows 10 I was unable to play and record records that I then sell on Discogs. I have read and tried for 8 months to get this problem resolved with no results. Until now, after watching this video I was able to stop using the usb plug and use the white and red cables that are connected to my turntable, and add the double plug female with the 3.5 male pin that fits into the back of the computer next to the sound plug. It now works Thanks for your helpful information.
Your videos are so helpful, I discovered your videos when I bought my audio technica turntable, and you really helped me set it up right, thank you. I record my vinyl, for my use of course but I also produce a three hour radio show that airs on our local FM station and use Adobe Audition for mixing my shows voice overs and songs. I didn't realize I might be able to label each song like you did here !! I love that and although I have Audacity too I am sure this feature is in Audition too. Awesome videos and thank you again !!
Wow I’m really glad you produced this video! I have been working on converting LPs to a digital mode and breaking down each file THE HARD WAY! Still more work to do, glad I can now go forward with a cleaner, easier method! Thanks!
Hello Craig, this has opened the door for me to have a lot of fun and to archive my records, Thank you for this and all the other video's. I have learned a lot from you!
This is great, I have so many records with Instrumentals and Acapellas of some of my favorite songs. Can't wait to try this, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Craig, Tony from the UK here, many thanks for that as I really didn’t understand Audacity at all! So now I know :) thank you I will be trying this soon.
Thank you so much, I did follow your instructions to the letter, all seems to be fine except that when I press Record in Audacity, I can hear Echoes, did I miss something. I would appreciate any suggestions how to prevent this. On play the Lp sound normal, just when I press record I can hear the Echoes.
Rega and NAD both make a direct phono to USB converter. I've been quite happy with the Rega, though the NAD is a bit more flexible. Both offer both USB and analog outputs.
Awesome Video - You have done a great thing in showing how to use the program Audacity. The features of putting labels and meta data, Excellent work and good teaching characteristic. I've used Audacity before and how it was too confusing - Simple instruction you have provided - Almost sounds like you were a teacher at one point to a school ??? Any how Thank you so much for bringing me up to speed in using the program Job well done.
I haven't started my vinyl collection yet but I have plans to archive my records as part of my ritual when buying a new one, especially if you're playing for the first time, I'm gonna make a lossless FLAC copy of it instead of tape because I don't have the means. It's more practical for me to archive it to my computer instead...
There is a digital RIAA conversion within Audacity. It is located in the effect/ equalisation settings. You can record directly from the cartridge via the computer microphone input, then add the RIAA equalisation. I have done this, but on my P.C.,the signal to noise ratio was bad.
Maybe I am old school, but I just burn my vinyl on to CD using a stand alone CD component recorder, just like I did to record vinyl onto a cassette deck back in the day. That being said, I can see the ease of editing advantage with using a computer.
I have had this software for years but never wanted to use it Much prefer analog settings . CDR copy is the easyist way directly but I used MD for a bit as CDs are very delicate , lost a few
Lov'in the T-shirt 👍 Fantastic tutorial. Have just started using this software and wasn't aware of a lot of the features. Going to have to go back and redo my records again and do it properly this time. Thank you 😊
I bought a device by ... Sennheiser? I forget. But, I could not get it to grab a signal from my receiver. I tried several outputs, including Tape Out, CD, and I think I tried AUX as well. Nothing. I finally got a signal when I connected the cables to the headphone jack of the receiver (via an adaptor), but only one channel was audible. I think I lack the proper outputs on my Denon receiver. UNLESS I'm supposed to connect it to my turntable instead, but I don't believe this device is comprised of a pre-amp?? So, I am looking for a solution that will receive the outputs from my receiver's Tape Out or Auxiliary connectors.
My two cents...I've used a couple of methods and programs. Early on I had a CD Recorder and would just rip that way TT to CD. Later on I had an Alesis ML-9600 HD recorder, that I used in my "home studio" for mixing/mastering. You could set the recording quality from 16 to 24 bit and 44.1kHz to 92kHz...lots of options. The catch was that you had to burn the tracks to a CD to get them off the internal HD. = I finally went the PC route. I've used PreSonus and Behringer pro audio interfaces and am currently using a Tascam (which has RCA inputs - the other two had 1/4" & XLR in's only). I have a TT pre-amp in between and the connection is USB. I use both Audacity and Vinyl Studio (a pay for program). They are both easier to use, but I find Audacity is easier for editing and VS is better for tagging. I do not like to use the click/pop removal options in either of the programs...I swear if "colors'" the music As for resolution for recording...I happen to use 24/96 (personal preference, and outboard storage is so cheap there's no reason why you can''t). I use dBPowerAmp (a pay for program) for converting files to MP3 for my friends and for my phone (always 320K Constant Bit Rate [CBR]). Like anything with tech tho' the only way to learn and know what you like/what works for you is to play around and see what you get.
Very good and clearly understandable tutorial video. Learned so many little things which i was doing in a very long way , in a short way now. THANK YOU!!
Easy and effective connection method is to connect the "tape out" jacks of your amplifier to your P.C. line in. This gives a healthy output voltage, includes RIAA equalisation from the amplifier pre-amp and saves disturbing existing connections. Another good tip is to clean your stylus before archiving every side; even better clean it before playing each individual track as detritus from the grooves will accumulate and seriously prejudice the reproduction towards the end of the record side. Also, if you're really anal, monitor on headphones and keep the speaker volume in the room at zero to minimise any acoustic feedback. Every little helps!Hope this helps.
I have a note about the sampling rate and bit depth sections. I reccomend to match the sampling rate of the sound card and audacity recording. Why? If bad quality resampling is done there might be hearable distortion especially at the high end, using 1 sampling rate for both won't result in any resampling. Bit depth.. With vinyl records, I wouldn't mind choosing 16 bits. About 65 thousands of values possible with 16 bit audio is plenty with imperfect audio format because of noise. But great video anyway. 👍
I run my turntable into a Presonus Audiobox 96 that was on special at Guitar Center last month. I was running my phono preamp (U-Turn Pluto), into it, but that caused signal clipping (apparently the Audiobox doesn’t like line level signals unless you run them through a direct box), but then I ordered some cables from Channel D so that I record The sound directly from the turntable without any kind of RIAA curve being applied. The vinyl ripping program I use (DCart10) has a virtual preamp so that I can apply the curve there.
Craig ! Hey buddy. Great video man !! Always excited to hear new videos from you. Audio Technica did come out with new 2019 LP120X USB. They do have updated specs on it and fixes issues that LP 120 had. Maybe in the near future that could be another video idea to compare these two direct drive players. Have a good one Craig ✌️
Regarding the USB audio interface- does it do an analog-to-digital conversion so that only bits are sent to the computer and theoretically no additional noise/ground hum OR does the USB carry an analog signal back to the sound card for the A2D sampling?
Hey, Craig. Enjoy your shows. I've set my AT-LP120 up according to your specs, and it's working great EXCEPT for when I try to play new LPs. I buy old records, clean them up with the Spin Clean machine that I ordered (per your advice) and they work and play beautifully, but new records? The stylus starts skating almost from the moment I set it on the edge of the record. All my setting remain the same, so It's got to be the record, right? Would appreciate any advice, and thanks for sharing your talents.
At Last!! A video about archiving, using Audacity, that's simple, concise and clear. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Now, how about how to use these archived files to burn an audio CD? Thank you again for throwing some light here. Sylvain G. Québec
NY NY JUNE 2020. I just replaced my 1980s entry level manual turntable, which needed repair. With new TEAC TN 570 is not bad overall quality as a manal turntable and it has digital out and preamp (don't need for regular listening use). As I have TASCAM 'pro' CD Recorder in my system, able to connect turntable optical out directly (bypass the integrated amp) to CD recorder. Working fine, making regular CDs but can also record mp3 CD. Strange thing is I do have to turn preamp in turntable ON to have a signal for CD recorder to use. I am going to reduce number of LPs I have.
Craig, I am having difficulty using Audacity 3.4.2 to archive my vinyl to my computer. The only way I am able to do it successfully is by using an audio interface (Behringer U222). Have you had any viewer comments regarding this issue with the newest version of Audacity?
Hello. How did you set the sound input in audacity to not go past -6? When I try there is no option to move the slider or limit the audio input. I am using an audio technica USB turntable. Thanks
Hi sir, how convert cassette into stereo wave file. I convert some audio file but i will get only mono type. I make a rearrangement whatever it maybe I will get only mono audio. but source is stereo version. What is wrong with this? Please help me sir .
Quick question, how do i get "true" stereo rip from vinyl through audacity? Even though i've checked "2 stereo channels" on the recording options etc & have the signal coming from a stereo output of my outboard mixer, the end result is always mono. My mixer IS going through a USB converter into the microphone channel on my laptop, because it's one of those laptops that doesn't let you record through the Mic input properly. Any info would be highly appreciated. Many thanks & good luck with your channel.
⚠⚠For those recording directly from Audio-Technica Turntables with a built in USB output⚠⚠SET THE SWITCH ON THE BACK TO “LINE”… Otherwise you will be stuck with an annoying high pitch background noise in each recording. It took me a few tries to figure it out
Thank you for the really good video. It's easy to follow, and since I'm really new at this that will be helpful. One question: Once the tracks are saved on your computer, how will I get them into iTunes? I've only ever uploaded from CD's or bought music from iTunes. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Nice review of Audacity ! now version 3.1.3 updated - Thanks much !! - Windows 10 Pro, now version 21H1 - Settings box looks a bit different from this video... as expected with Windows 😮
Craig.i hope you are still going? i've learn't a LOT FROM YOU, from setting up my turntable (technics sl-23 very old, 25 quid!!!..ortofon 2m red) i am going to try to put my vinyl on to my IMAC soon.. i've got 2 but. old hifi setup's that work very well, NAD 3225PE for the cd player & a mission cyrus one for the deck, into RAGA ELA speaker's..... KEEP going man. ATB ian from england essex. cheers.
I like seeing your process. I go a little nuts with it using my interface into Pro Tools, then using a light high pass filter and noise reduction plugins!
Hi Craig thank you very much for the clear tutorial I am watching from Belgium Europe. My turntable is connected to a Cocktail Audio X45 that makes the recording in "CAF" format. I then edit this file on my PC with Audacity to optimize it. I still have a question in connection with optimizing an LP recording: You use “Normalize” but in other tutorial I see people using the ”Limiter”. In your opinion which of these two is actually the best? What's the difference between these two? Many thanks in advance for your help. Paul😉
Hi, I'm using a video/audio grabber device. The recordings are distorted and crackly. I don't have the 'USB Microphone Codec' option on Audacity dropdown box. Just says 'Microphone (2- USB Audio Interface)'. I've loaded a Windows 10 audio codec pack but no change. Any suggestions?
Hello Sir I already have an empty Vinyl and MP3 file in my computer I want that audio file to be on Vinyl CD How could I do it? It’s my father’s voice and I wanna bring it to my Mom as a gift Thanks
Thats a LOT of settings & menues comared with the Analog VU meter & tape that I insist on keeping ? I do DJ mix tape still to this day without any computers in the middle . I just had to see all this & WOW all those software settings to copy music .
Kind of like picking the right tape, setting the bias, figuring out what noise reduction, and setting the levels. Once you do it the first time, you're all set for getting the perfect recording.
@@VinylTV33 Yeah , 3 head deck is best . There is a TH-cam Channel : Cassette Comeback here in the UK with Tony . He dose all good test tapes close up with a Dragon and other decks . Let me know if you like it
My enjoyment of music is better without pops & clicks, wow & flutter and tape hiss. Some say those add to the “warmth” but to me, it is like bird sh*t on the Mona Lisa. The process Craig described here allowed me to “free” hundreds of albums from record crates and let me enjoy every single track while driving, running, mowing, etc. It was worth figuring out and at the end of the day, the only setting that sometimes changes is the recording level, just like on your cassettes.
If only I had teachers at school with half of this dude's kind and enthusiastic passion.
This is the best explanation of recording, using Audacity I have seen.

Bob Adkins exactly. And it took forever! Lol. This video is truly an awesome resource. I can’t thank him enough

Hello from Nürnberg Germany
I've heard flac files made from a first playthrough of a vinyl and it can be pristine and amazing

The best video on this subject thanks and I wish you all the contentment you deserve
Seeing Winamp pop up there made me chuckle.

Excellent tutorial. I've been using Audacity for years, and didn't know half this stuff.
Great video, clear and steady away tutor for beginners, I learnt a lot from this guy. Thanks a lot.
Thanks! Just ended my Apple Music subscription and need to make mp3 copies of my vinyl . This video will allow me to do it!! Great job!
Wear it out once, you may experience a different warmth, if not, look harder. You Rock Out Loud!

I didn't like audacity free version. Seems to have it's limits. I use moo0 audio recorder version 1.49
JBL G Cool cheers I will take a look 👍🏻

Rega and NAD both make a direct phono to USB converter. I've been quite happy with the Rega, though the NAD is a bit more flexible. Both offer both USB and analog outputs.
You just helped me out big-time with this video.Seriously, thanks!🗽🛸📼
Awesome Video - You have done a great thing in showing how to use the program Audacity. The features of putting labels and meta data, Excellent work and good teaching characteristic.
I've used Audacity before and how it was too confusing - Simple instruction you have provided - Almost sounds like you were a teacher at one point to a school ???
Any how Thank you so much for bringing me up to speed in using the program
Job well done.
Nice and educational video Craig. Great work. Keep those videos flowing to us. 17 and regards to your family.
Thanks sir! Was able to get all my Pink Floyd LP's to FLAC. You made it so easy.
This would be good in a pinch, but wouldn't you rather send a higher level signal into your pc to avoid all the CPU noise and such?
Maybe I am old school, but I just burn my vinyl on to CD using a stand alone CD component recorder, just like I did to record vinyl onto a cassette deck back in the day. That being said, I can see the ease of editing advantage with using a computer.
I have had this software for years but never wanted to use it
Much prefer analog settings .
Thank you 😊
Great thanks. I can’t find your vid on removing pops and crackle? Is this yet to be issued?
I finally went the PC route.
I do not like to use the click/pop removal options in either of the programs...I swear if "colors'" the music
As for resolution for recording...I happen to use 24/96 (personal preference, and outboard storage is so cheap there's no reason why you can''t).
THANK YOU!!
Thank you - thank you! Your step by step instructions have saved me time & money. Super helpful!
At 19:25 what number is the level normalization mode set to. I cant see it the screen is to small.
24:13 WinAmp FTW! Oh my, is that program still around?
that shirt is iconic, it's badass, don't ever change it.
don't even wash it...
Sir! Thank you for all the great videos! this is particularly convinced me to use audacity over Logic!
Thank you for taking the time and effort to walk us through this.
How do you connect Nad 3020 amp. Do I use the headphone socket ot take out the links and use Pre Out ?. Loved the video.
What's the difference between the joint stereo and stereo settings?
Basically, joint stereo encodes both channels in the same stream, where as stereo encodes them separately. As far as difference, I've never noticed.
@@VinylTV33 Thanks for the info
Craig !
This was so helpful!! Thank you very much!!💪🏼😍
Off subject question please. What is the deal with the weight folks put over the spindle. Seems pointless to me. Extra strain on the motor.
Thank you soooo much!!! I was having such a hard time trying to figure out how to label each song!!
Regarding the USB audio interface- does it do an analog-to-digital conversion so that only bits are sent to the computer and theoretically no additional noise/ground hum OR does the USB carry an analog signal back to the sound card for the A2D sampling?
The audio gets digitized in your audio interface.
Sylvain G. Québec
Your explanation is spot on! Love it! Love it! Love it! I subscribed to your channel. Thank you.
It took me a few tries to figure it out
Exactly what i was looking for... Thanks!
Regards from Brazil
Thanks Craig!! I couldn't find the line in jack on my laptop but i was able to find it on my pc
I love the way you have presented it. It helped me a lot. Now I can digitize my tapes and Lps.
Thanks a lot.
Thank you for the really good video. It's easy to follow, and since I'm really new at this that will be helpful. One question: Once the tracks are saved on your computer, how will I get them into iTunes? I've only ever uploaded from CD's or bought music from iTunes. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Great video. Step by step guide makes things very easy. Many thanks.
Nice review of Audacity ! now version 3.1.3 updated - Thanks much !! - Windows 10 Pro, now version 21H1 - Settings box looks a bit different from this video... as expected with Windows 😮
Great tutorial on Audacity. Thanks for putting out here for us.
I go a little nuts with it using my interface into Pro Tools, then using a light high pass filter and noise reduction plugins!
thank you for the easy to understand information. Appreciated. Hope you continue to produce more content.
Hello Sir
I already have an empty Vinyl and MP3 file in my computer
I want that audio file to be on Vinyl CD
How could I do it?
It’s my father’s voice and I wanna bring it to my Mom as a gift
Thanks
@@shaun9107 I love that guys videos. I watch them all the time. He knows his stuff!
@@CraigTube well yeah he works with computers , I do not so whats your point .
Thank you this is the best tutorial on TH-cam best regards Mark
