  • 🛻 Bromley High Street, 1986. Credit: Bromley Studies and Archives. The shops are shut meaning it was probably either a Sunday or in the evening. What layout changes has there been in the intervening years?
🛻 Well at the north end of the High Street, not much, its all very recognisable. The buildings remain, but pavements are now wider and deeper, street lighting has changed.
🛻 Market Square down to the Broadway, again very recognisable, but was pedestrianised later in the 1980s. Pedestrianisation has meant that instead of narrow pavements that unfortunately couldn’t cope with footfall at busy times, there is now an open space where everyone can stroll down the centre. It allowed for outdoor seating which wasn’t possible prior. It made room for Bromley Market to return Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and for public events that are often held in the Square and the street.
Other stuff we clocked in this footage:
🛻 Little Top Shop is where Card Factory is now.
🛻 Small Next where Hotter shoe shop is now.
🛻 British Home Stores where Lidl is now.
    🛻 Littlewoods.
    🛻 Odeon Cinema now Picturehouse.
    🛻 Safeway.
    🛻 C & A where Poundland is now.
🛻 Mirror fronted building next to railway station was occupied by a business back then.
    🛻 Blue and Yellow buses.
🛻 Blast from the past. Bromley South Railway Station stating 'British Rail'. Cars parked right outside the station.
🛻 The turning into Elmfield Road seemed tiny.
🛻 The Glades hadn’t yet been built, but the ornate church we often see in old photos, well that was already long gone in the 1980s. At Bromley South the Victorian buildings that hadn’t been demolished in the 1960s are still there today, or at least thier facade is. Bromley South Shopping Precinct, and the BT Tower was in this footage for a couple of seconds, but was demolished at the end of the 80s having been there for little over 20 years. #bromleyhighstreet #bromley #bromleynostalgia #bromleyhistory

Still looks very modern (except for the "Kinnock mobile" style busses doing the rounds!)
