Before the early 70s, women had to have permission from their husbands to get any kind of birth control . This song was revolutionary.
That seems so crazy now! It's infuriating.
I believe it depended on where you lived. It wasn't that way in my state...
Let's not forget how many "husbands" who didn't want to pay for divorce and spousal support had their wives commited to insane asylums so they could run off with Ms. Houchee Couchee ! My Aunty couldn't open her own checking account without her husband opening the account. She explained she had her own job and wanted her own account, the bank manager refused. She told him then you will see me everyday on my lunch hour standing outside this bank handing out notes to anyone who walks by of your business practices to women. After the first lunch hour the next day, he disgruntley opened her an account. This was early 60s in Calif.

I remember that and Loretta really cause a stir but she never backed down from any song she wrote. Even in places where it wasn't the law, that was the attitude of many doctors.
Loretta has had like 9 songs banned from radio play...but every one of those became #1 hit sellers...because she writes and records what she feels, and doesn't care who likes it or who don't. People in Nashville say she may be "too real". She said it's the only way she can write. She's 89 and just released a new hit album STILL WOMAN ENOUGH. Her motto is "Never quit working. Never retire." because she loves writing songs. She has over 1,000 songs she hasn't even recorded!
How I wish they were recorded. I love listening to her life accounts, she's just so blunt and interesting to listen too.

But I tell you that she sang to women who never ever realize that they could get the pill. She spoke to women in Appalachia she really really really made a difference.
She recorded this 5 years after the birth control pill became available and 2 years after Roe v Wade, so the song was very controversial at the time. And she was, indeed, describing what it was like for women as breeders. She was also a child bride, married at 13.

Yes it was controversial and banned there were different movements for women at the time. She WAS having babies by her husband too. The radio Stations had a problem with ( someone singing about birth control). But she got the last laugh.😆

This song was very controversial when it came out and there were a lot of radio stations that refused to play it. But it still became a classic. Gotta give props to Loretta - she truly was a force to be reckoned with!
Loretta Lynn says that by her count she has had 14 songs banned from select radio stations because she sang about life instead of what the industry wanted her to sing. She was telling the truth about what she was living and said that each time a song was banned it sold even better than before radio banned it, so she didn't worry if they were banned. She didn't see anything wrong with the songs, they were real life, but others felt they were scandalous for that time.

@@ladybhive1210 Yes "The Pill" was one of them. A few others were "Fist City", Rated X", "Don't Come home a Drinking", "Wings Upon Your Horns", One's on the Way". I don't have a complete list and I read about the 14 songs in one of her books.

My mother loved her, which surprises me in retrospect because my mother was very judgmental and straight laced. But Loretta was her favorite female singer.

Loretta Lynn is a country legend. She is a singer song writer who's music has spanned 6 decades. She was also friends with the great late Patsy Cline. Her younger sister Crystal Gayle also is a great singer. She grew up dirt poor & stayed humble & true to her roots. The autobiographical movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" is worth looking at.

Loretta was banned for this song. She wrote a lot of her biggest songs in the 60s and 70s.... the women's movement was taking hold at that time. Sexual liberation of women scared the hell out of the average man and most radio and TV stations were in their control at the time. She was groundbreaking for sure. Her music became more topical as she grew older and more liberated. And many of her songs were about womens' experiences in general, not just hers personally.

Ya'll need to watch Coal Miners Daughter the movie. It is about her life. She literally did not know about sex until her wedding night. That us how innocent, or naive, she was.
Loretta truly loved her husband so much. I remember when he passed away it was so sad. You'll understand their marriage once you watch the movie. Their relationship progressed with the times.
10-04-22 R.I.P. Loretta. She was my secret girlfriend ever since I saw her perform live when the Grand Ol' Opry road show came to Seattle way back in the 60s. Hard to believe such a remarkable music icon is no longer with us. Her presence will be greatly missed.

Shawn and Mel, FYI in reference to Loretta's "brooder house" - a brooder house is where young chicks are kept to keep warm until thy are no longer need the heat.
She also kept every gift a fan ever gave her. There's a museum at her ranch. Talk about her being real? When we toured her house she had the same kitchen table as us.

I remember when I was just barely in Jr. High, I heard this song on the radio. We lived in rural Georgia at the time.... A while later, I was listening to the radio and the DJ on the radio apologized for playing the song and said that it wouldn't be played on that station any more! That just made me turn to another station to see if they would play it! I finally heard it again and really listened to it and it was wonderful! Those self-righteous hypocrites were really torn because they loved Loretta Lynn but felt that the song was against their narrow-minded, misogynistic beliefs!

My great grandmother had 17 children...I had a doctor who had 14 children & my Avon lady ( in the 1990s) was pregnant with her 18th child. In the times of my great grandparents, folks often came from working farms and having many children to maintain the farms & passing them on to family was considered an asset for that reason. Also because in those days you could lose a child due to simple things like an injury or a simple thing like a kidney infection or illness/ virus (no antibiotics back then). My Avon lady & her hubby were practicing Catholics. She told me (in confidence) that she wanted her tubes tied after delivering the one she was carrying, but her husband said no & she was afraid to take birth control pills. My doctor told me that every time her husband (also a doctor) and her went on vacation, she always ended up pregnant (they were also Catholics)..she told me, she was going to tell him no more vacations!! SMH.
Our pastor Monsignor Tom is one of 14. He’s such a nice man and I like listening to his sermons at church.

When the pill came out it was a very controversial time, and this song was a rallying cry to many of the women in my mother's generation. They were so brave, and did so much to lay the ground work of many of the freedoms we as women today take for granted. I wish that their contribution was remembered more. Or that they would make a movie about that time period. Women's Lib was not just women in the street burning their bras and protesting. It was millions of housewives deciding that they wanted their daughters to have a better life. They fought and endured so much persecution just to be able to support their families and make a decent wage that was equal to the pay that a man received for the same job. They opened doors that we all just take for granted. Loretta was one of those women who was brave enough to speak her truth, while at the same time being a feminine and beautiful person.
This song created a huge wave in society when released, lots of stations refused to play this. Is said to be a turning point in women's heath and them taking control of birth control, once the control of their husband's.

I love ya'll reactions, especially the Loretta reactions. She my favorite artist. If you think this song was shocking, listen to her song Wings Upon Your Horns. She said after she recorded it Doo told her that was the filthiest song he had ever heard. Loretta music is very real and that's what made her the great artist that she is. I'm a superfan. ❤❤ but Ive only got to see her in concert once probably 6 or 7 years ago. The whole audience just sat there in awe. You just couldn't take your eyes off her. In most concerts people are talking, running to the restroom, running to get drinks...not at Loretta's concert. She was just sitting in a chair on the stage with her great band singing her sings and telling stories. All 5000 of us were just in awe with full attention on her. One of my favorite memories for sure.

What you hear is what we grew up with and we listened on the radio or a small record player that you put on one at a time (when we could afford the records). Not to spoil it if y'all haven't yet or still plan on getting to the movie, but a funny part was her parents had told her something like the way you end up pregnant is when the cabbages bloom or the leaves open up or whatever in the garden (because apparently the pill was new when she was singing but before that people often seemed to end up pregnant in the spring, like, EVERY spring because nobody had birth control) - and the funny part was, she had already had several kids and STILL DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER WHERE THEY WERE COMING FROM, and Doolittle Lynn came home and found her out in the garden cutting the leaves off the cabbages and asked her what the heck she was doing, and she was crying about being tired of having all these kids! So I'm sure this song was about her REAL life and came later after of course he had explained things to her and then she became a more famous singer/songwriter and birth control came along, so there you go! (LOL! But there she was, a MOTHER OF SEVERAL CHILDREN, out in the garden cutting leaves off the cabbages because she thought they were making her pregnant!)😂🤣

The main word I could use to describe Loretta is "FEISTY"... she'll tell you like it is right to your face. I've known several people who grew up where and how she did (coal country of TN, WV and KY) and they're ALL like that. No nonsense, no subterfuge, honest, hard working, God fearing folks who will have your back and give you the shirt off of theirs in your time of need.... and they are fiercely loyal friends. All that's asked in return is the same. And I wouldn't trade any one of those folks for all the money in the world.

So, people loved those songs but the radio couldn’t play them because of the governing agencies! Kind of funny thinking about it now since they have birth control commercials on television and divorce is very common now! 😂

Loretta stayed pregnant with her first three kids and her twins came along years after she became famous and Dew had to basically raise Peggy and Patsy. Loretta had to go to work. Her son Jack Benny an,d daughter Betty Sue are gone now to heaven. Her twins sing together and had a band The Lynn’s but I am not sure they still sing.? You should check out a song called "Portland Oregon." Its a duet with Loretta Lynn and Jack White from the White Strjpes. Loretta is alot older when they recorded this song. It sounds great though.

Ps that album dropped when my daughter was 7. That was her intro and she was an instant fan. I, lifelong. We took her to her first show when she was 9. Kind of at the end....then Loretta started playing a song i or two and then having her grandchildren come and do a set. Still amazing though.

I checked the songs but am assuming I may be adding to votes for songs already, although some are great but lesser known: "Honky Tonk Girl," (best version on Greatest Hits, it's on TH-cam. ); "When the Tingle Becomes a Chill," "Wings Upon Your Horns," "I Want You Outta My Head and Back in My Bed," "You're Squaw is in the Warpath Tonight," "Don't Come Home A' Drinking With Lovin' On Your Mind" and "You're Looking at Country." "Blue Kentucky Girl," I believe she covered, but not sure. Loretta has an anthology collection with covers of her friend, Patsy Cline's, songs and they are surprisingly good. Of course, "One's On The Way" was probably suggested. Later in life, Loretta and Willie Nelson have a duet called "Lay Me Down." It's gospel-like and very good. Strong vocals from Loretta. you need to watch Coal MIners Daughter its all about her life,and Hank Williams you need to listen to more of him he wrote all his music and some for others singers as well his life was tragic poor as can be and old black man in the south T top they called him told him he had a good voice and to sing while he was playing the Harmonica Hank was 12 and thats when it started he died at 29 on New Years Eve going to a concert in his car had a Heart attack he was addicted to pain pills because he hurt his back his gospel album is amazing
