Back in the day I charged an extra 1500 for those same stripes. Did a mustang in my garage Video on my channel. Charged 6000 and barely made any money. But did slightly nicer job.
$3,500 is a steal of the century! I recently got bodywork and paint done on my 69 Mach 1 and paint and material alone was $4,500 (Cali pricing). Enjoy what you have and looking forward to more of your vids.
I’m glad you did this video. I am still probably 18 months out on mine and I was reading reviews that I was going to have to spend $15-$20,000 but I don’t want a showroom. I want a driving job. I think you paid an honest amount and he gave you honest work, congratulations job well done
So many people say they don't want/need a show winning paint job then they expect it to be a show car finish when they pick it up. Thanks for the video.
I got the paint job I asked for (mostly). I told him I had no plans for showing the car, I just want to drive it, and I think he gave a fair deal (mostly). :)
That’s an amazing price even for a rough paint job. I literally just got my mustang painted exactly the same colors. Car was in 3 shops and I had to take it out of each shop…promises made and never kept. I literally couldn’t seem to find anyone willing to touch it for less than $30k. Of course that wasn’t in my budget. Finally found a similar backyard painter who was amazing. He gapped it, lined everything up, tons of bodywork and a nice paint job. 15k, 4 shops, and 1 year later I finally got it back! I was losing hope completely for a long time. It’s all about finding the right person and that is extremely hard to do these days in the trades.
Truth, I wish we had more options out there that didn't cost the same as a brand new car. Glad to hear you got your car back, hopefully you've been able to put some miles on it this summer. :)
The person who painted did an incredible job and a lot of work for the price. Cost of paint varies widely depending on the quality, brand, etc. I paint on the side and for what he did I could not have done. I was thinking at least $7000 with budget friendly materials. I would never go too cheap on any classic car. The car is meant to last and hold value. Even $12,000 would have been cheap with quality materials. A lot of body shops around me don’t do repaints but rather focus on insurance work. Based on the way you discussed your approach on what you were looking for… you did incredibly well. Beautiful Fastback!!!!
Hi Andy, you got a nice driver with a good deal on paint. Some others have commented, but I have a friend who is getting his Charger painted and the paint alone was $10k. Excellent video!
honestly, if anyone says anything negative about the price for that, they have no clue what goes into doing it. and kudos to you for being a down to earth customer, cause 90% of people say they aren't expecting perfection but will when the job is done. it's a hard business to do as i've done it for the past 15yrs on my own in my own "backyard" shop. great video and walk through of what it takes to get your own vehicle painted by others.
Andy, your a kind person, respectful. I think you got a decent price for what you wanted. I've got a 15 footer myself. An proud of it. I did paint an body work . Bless you
I wasn't opposed to a Maaco job at first, because I would rather spend the money on go-fast parts. But in the end, while it took longer, it seems like I got a slightly better paint job for the same dollar. :)
I just had a Ford Fairmont wagon painted that my grandmother bought new. It wasn't in terrible shape but it did need some tlc. $10, 800 bucks later I got my dream paint job. It took him 1 year. I know a wagon is a much bigger car but this was sentimental to me. $3500 is a steal for that car. Be proud of your car! I love it! Great lookin mustang bub!
I did 95% of the body work on my Fastback windows out, and took it to guy that had just put in a new spray booth friend of mine at work told me about Ed's Classics Hayward California. The car had been sitting for awhile after I was done with the prep, he told me it need to be sanded again, and sealed once more, so went down bought more paint and materials was about $400 for materials. Used PPG base and Five Start clear coat, was sealed in PPG Epoxy primer previous this. He painted it for $2500.00 but that was back in 2001. I've had quotes for another car I have that needed rockers, and some pretty extensive metal work otherwise, and then strip to metal on all exterior panels, guy quoted me 17k, after seeing his work, which was ok, but not quite to my standards, I stopped him after the cars metal work was done, and he had put epoxy primer on it, we settled on 10K for the repairs to that point. The rust repairs were pretty extensive, and even though I provided the new panels for the repair, it's a time consuming job at some levels. No rust, much easier job to do, but still every paint job is the result of good prep work. I spent almost 4 years off and on my Fastback working on the body, to be honest could have done a better job if I had completed all the work I did, but happy at the price point, and the paintwork can still be corrected at some point because you eventually get dings again !
You've done great. We can't all be Jay Leno. I'm slowly builing up my 2009 Mustang V6 convertible. That being said, I realize what I have, and what my max is for investment. I'm trying to keep it as stock as possible, and mechanically and structurally sound, while adding small mods... dual exhaust, front lip, side scoops, tailight bezels, black out deck lid, etc. I added strut and shock tower braces to stiffen the handling a bit. I even removed and repainted the front bumper cover in my basement. Anything I could do myself I've done to save $$$. Eventually it will need to be painted, but what I have is fine, and I don't stress if I get a scratch here and there. It's my daily driver, and I ENJOY it as such!
Baeutiful car, and great video! I worked in a body shop in the early to mid 80's and we were getting between 1-2K for lacquer paint jobs back then. As you realize, the prep work is what makes a great paint job. I have owned a 72 Olds Cutlass convertible for 30 years. It was an solid, original southern car when I got with 85% original paint. It looked good and people tought the car was restored but there were imperfections that bothered me. I saw a car at a local show with great paint and spoke to owner who gave me the name of shop that did it and I went to talk to the guy. This was round 1996. I explained I would remove the bumpers and all trim and reinstall. I was quoted 6250. I was too cheap to pay that and painted it in my garage myself and got good results in 1997. The car still looks great but materials alone were over 600 at the time. I believe you got a fantastic paint job for a great price in short amount of time. I'm into Jeeps now and painted a 90's Wrangler in my driveway last year. Material cost are insane now. You can spend more than you paid for entire paint job on materials alone for one car, with some of the top brands. Enjoy!!!
First of all, your selection of colors was the right choice. I love the combination. My old man recently had his C10 painted and went through a similar process. Told the painter he wanted a good paint job, but the truck will live outside (I know, it's a crime, but his garage space is limited...his truck is his morning donut fetcher and grocery-getter). The guy did a great job, but the paint isn't concours level but it's good enough and looks great. I think he spent around $5k. I think you got a great deal...and best of all, if in 5 years you decide you want that crazy paint job, it's not like you're undoing a previous $15-30k paint job. Drive the car, enjoy it, and like you said...don't sweat it when there's a scratch here and there! I'm picking up a 69 Mach 1 clone here in a few weeks and I'm struggling with the direction I want to go on the paint. The car is currently royal maroon, which is a pretty color, but I've always loved the Acapulco Blue, or even branching out to a more modern color like Sterling Gray Silver Metallic. I can't decide if I want to pay someone $10k+ to do a really nice job on the car, or if I want to invest in tools and attempt to do the entire job myself. I guess on the upside, if I try to do it myself and it doesn't turn out great, I will have paid the bill on some great lessons and have the tools to try again down the road. Cheers - I love your videos, keep 'em coming! 🙂
Yeah, that's a big part of it, I didn't want to regret my color choice with an expensive paint job. If I do decide to switch it up down the road, I won't be erasing $15k worth of work. That's a good way to look at it. If I had the space, I would have done it myself. Even if it cost me the same or more, I'd have the tools and some experience to show for it, which makes it worth it to me. :)
I had to paint my 66 2+2 twice!!! I paid one shop,, that had done great work in the past, to paint my car. When I got it back we found out that the shop had sent my car to another shop and it was a total crap job. So I had to find another shop. We did the same....ask others that recently had painted their cars. What we found was a Maaco shop that had a separate dept that did collector cars. Their main work was doing police and trooper vehicles. They took it down to metal as over the years it had a few paints. Ot took 3 weeks and I found no flaws for a DRIVER pant job it that amount of time. I did Avalanche Gray with Black stripes. BTW mine was $3500.....so inline with yours.
Wow Andy, I think you have done well, the paint job looks good, not a high end car show type of paint job, never the less, a good job for the money, i am a retired Panel Beater by trade and I painted my 66 Mustang Coupe myself, i painted the car in old Acrylic A type paint, i used 10 litres as i painted inside the doors and jams as well as i flow coated the whole car, that means i painted 4 coats and let it dry for a week and wet rubbed it back with 800 crid paper and give it another 4 coats in the same Wimbledon White, i spent a little over $3,000 AU just on paint and materials, so i think you've done ok, just enjoy your car mate. Cheers, Dave from down under.
You are in the right mind about things happening. I used to be very particular but as I get older I just want something that looks good but is a driver and be able to enjoy my vehicles and not get upset about things happening.
I paid $3,500 for a pretty decent paint job with minimal body work needed in the Portland Oregon area, but the guy is extremely difficult to contact, won't return calls, etc. It was a color change from black to dark green (1996 Volvo 850R Estate, aka Wagon). Full performance build, manual trans swap, new upholstery...It's making ~325 Wheel HP. Total sleeper. I need to get a 1977 Volvo 245 repainted. It'll be another performance build. White to Cumberland Yellow (orange).
Great video Andy! That is exactly what I want. A driver that I’m not afraid of driving. This was my mom’s car and really enjoy driving it. Hopefully someday I’ll be ready for paint!
Wow, you 1,000% got a great deal! Bonus is that it still does look good and if he did it right, it will actually last a long time. My full time job is working on helicopters but I do custom paint on the side. You could easily have $3,500 just in filler, primer, sealer, color, clear, consumables like razors and tape and masking, and also overhead such as air compressor and tool use and electricity and such. You can even have someone wet sand the clear down and do a flow coat over the clear and cut, buff, and polish it and it will look show quality. Trust me, heck of a deal!
Thanks! Don't really care about show quality, I don't want to be afraid to go near the car. Working on Helicopters would be Awesome. Sometimes I wonder if I chose the wrong career..... :)
Awesome video, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I went through the exact same process in my head when I got my car painted, good to know I’m not alone. Your car looks great and if I had a fastback I would paint it the same colors.
It's a fine line between a good paint job and what we consider more "show " quality. We all get so OCD about this ( me included ) I would say your car paint is high quality and you paid very little in my mind for what you got. I would love to find a guy that could do the job at that price. You got a " good friend " price. But better yet you trusted a non pro that delivered good results. That took guts. Congrats!
You got it exactly perfect for 3500. There are very few people out there that will paint anything for under 5k. It looks great and the painter did a good job
I'd described my paint job similarly. Unfortunately, I did not get that. I had orange peel on the deck lid along both rockers, to name a few spots. For me, it was a color change, scuff, and paint. It took the shop over nine months to complete the job, and I had to babysit. I also paid for additional things that did not turn out as expected, such as rolled fenders. Needless to say, after I got the car back from the shop, I took it back after it was reassembled. They did fix those issues I mentioned, but it was returned to me with a dented hood, WTH. They said they would fix it but I would have to take the car back to them in a couple of weeks. In total, I ended up paying about $8500, and they lost some of my parts. Yeah, it's not going back. Anyway, I think your car looks great. Keep up the good work.
Sorry to hear that it was a painful process, hopefully Karma will work its magic for that guy. I hope you're able to get everything like you want it with a different shop. :)
People dont realize just how much goes into body and paint. I sure didnt until i did it myself........ And all i did was manage to get it all one color. Satin black! Holy hell.
LOOKS GREAT! I HAD MY CAR DONE WITH LOTS OF BODY, ADDED A ROLL BAR, NEW FLOORS, FULL STRIP, PREP AND SAME PERIOD CORRECT NUMBERS MATCHING PAINT CODES AND COST ME 24k. I DO HAVE SOME GAPS, BUT I DON'T CARE. IT LOOKS MORE AUTHENTIC BECAUSE BACK IN THE DAY, THE GAPS WERE NOT PERFECT FROM THE FACTORY. I DRIVE MY TRIBUTE GT350 DAILY AND LOVE IT! INSTEAD OF SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY DOING A SWAP, I WENT WITH THE PRIOD CORRECT SETUP WITH THE 68 302 THAT CAME WITH THE CAR WHEN I BOUGHT IT IN 2006; NATURALLY ASPIRATED 750 DOUBLE PUMPER HOLLEY CARB, 331 STROKER KIT WITH FORGED INTERNALS AND REUSED THE CAST IRON HEADS.
That's a great price even for a dirt floor home paint job. A couple big glaring issues, it a normal thing to have to accept or have redone at a later time. He did a good job.
I started watching this thinking man this guy is taking forever, but after watching I appreciate the presentation. As others have mentioned, just quality material can cost more than what you paid. As a person who does body work some but understands it completely (and I have a 65 Shelby recreation also as well and am headed to paint with my 55 Belair currently)..PPG paint (gallon) for the 55 was $800 bucks-that’s just the paint and not any products required to mix and spray, and that’s just one of the 2 colors the car will be finished in. I am at $5k in all related paints primers and floor and undercoat paint..you got a great deal in your paint job. Hopefully repairs were done correctly and don’t “show themselves”…those were serious issues around the flairs that probably warranted quarter panel replacement (and maybe you did). I like the Shelby R type front valance and adding the tight fit rear bumper. You mentioned stripe perfection-worth noting for followers, real Shelby cars did not have straight stripes by design (can google for more info) and the GT350 rocker stripes should have oversprayed into the rocker areas.. I appreciate you not presenting your build as a recreation but rather a car that has everything youve loved about many different mustangs-this was your dream car and I get it. Great job. Really great looking car…I’ll be following.
The car looks great, and all the colors you mentioned are the same ones I like. I think you got a great deal, for comparison, I am paying $500, for prep and paint on that same front valance you have. My car is a 66 Wimbledon White coupe, with a Turquoise and White Pony interior. Enjoy the car.
That car looks fantastic especially for the price you paid. Don't be depressed about it, you said it yourself, you want a driver that you don't have to baby the hell out of. You got a good deal IMO.
I did a mustang several years back with the stripes just like that....it was apart. he paid me $6000 and I barely made anything worked on it 2 months. and made about $2000 after paying my help.....that was in my garage. There were several flaws in it but not so many. none like the one you showed in the beginning of the video. Video on my channel. 1000 a month is NOTHING...less than my monthly bills.
You got a smokin deal ! Cost me $8K here in So Cal for a similar job. I was quoted as high as $25K and most prices averaged around $12-14K. It's crazy !!
Great explanation of your new paint job! Looks great super deal on the price what you paid is what I have spent on my other Mustang's paint jobs over 25 years ago. The fiberglass hood on my current 65 cost me over $1000 to prep and paint and we have a body shop at my work. Thanks for doing these informative videos :)
Hey I think you did very well for your paint job. Don't sweat it. The car looks good and it is meant to be driven! Real Shelbys have paint chips. Drive the car and enjoy life and don't sweat it!
The Internet makes almost any car's paint look really good. You got a fair deal for a home garage budget paint. Very few car show spectators can tell the difference between a scuff and paint like your car, or a full bare metal perfectly gapped and worked high end paint. What most people don't understand is that quality materials easily cost more than what you paid for everything. Truth is that most enthusiasts are better off with even a good MAACO paint, or guy in his garage like you did. Most people want just good enough paint like you did so they can drive the wheels off their car and have no regrets about never winning a best paint award.
$3500!!!!! Awesome!!! Wish I was closer cause I'd look him ASAP!!! I'm doing all my own prep work and I'll be priming it myself. Still deciding if I'm gonna shoot the color or not. Thanks for the info!! Reassuring that there are some out there that will give you a decent job for a decent price!
I'd have painted the car myself if I had the space. I envy your situation if you're able to do it. I like doing all the work myself, plus gaining the experience, and I'd have all the tools in the end. :)
Owning a restoration shop, we avergae 10k for bodywork and paint. If a customer has done ALL the prep and all we need to do scuff and shoot, around 3500. Materials arent cheap. Im working on a customers 66 convertible, and we're 4g for materials after doing a full restoration. You got a good deal.
I live in St. Petersburg Florida and I restore cars and boats. Too many shop chest beat about using the "best" materials but really don't. You pay for Glasurit and get Transtar, or whatever. You pay for the shop to go to bare metal then epoxy...nope. It's to the point where you have to video or photograph damn near everything. Do you think I'm making this up?
Andy, it is a totally reasonable price. It looks fantastic as well. I always look for value and trade off for other things that are more important. Just a personal preference. Don't worry about explaining yourself to anyone.
Thanks. Its less about explaining myself, and more about trying to answer all the questions I usually get about everything I do. Trying to save some people their time. I agree about the trade-off thing. I'd rather spend the money on go-fast parts than worry about something like Ceramic coating the paint. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel Hey Andy, can you help me? I am doing a new carpet install and was also going to paint the interior quarter panel trims (where the round courtesy lights are located). I have the driver side panel off but the passenger side has a bolt further back near the flat back seat panel near the trunk. Do I need to take off the flat panel near the trunk to get to this bolt to remove the panel? I also heard that putting it back in is difficult. Thank you!
as someone who has painted several of my own cars in similar conditions, that guy put more than 35 shop hours into that I would guess, plus the cost of all the consumables (which is a lot) plus the cost of paint which ranges wildly. all in all, that guy put in a lot of hours for what he really got paid out of it. I'd say you got a great deal and it always shows up better on camera but it looks like like there was a lot of work put into the details even given the issues you've picked up on. hopefully it was a fair deal for both sides. looks goods though. remember, all we're going for is for the local guys to wander out of the bingo hall and see it across the parking lot and go "Who's rig is that? that your rig? looks nice" yep. that's my rig.
It looks a lot better than the factor paint that came on that car, you did well on the time frame also including the extra work. If you check the price of paint supplies and materials you’ll see you did very well on the price. Andy, you need to put your magnifying glass away and quit over thinking it, the car looks fantastic!
You got a great paint job for what you paid. I’m like you, it’s more important to enjoy than to worry about scratching it. Matter of fact my one year old dropped a screw driver on the car recently 🙃
I don't know how he did material and labor for that cheap. I just had my 1970 fastback Boss 302 tribute painted. There was no rust in the car and it only needed finish bodywork. I set the panel gaps and handed to the bodyshop in bare metal. Materials alone was over $7,000. Total was $30K. But the workmanship was top notch. They worked the dents out and didn't use filler. The car only had a skim coat in it. They did weld patches over my sail panel seams. The finish product came out great. I would love to have paid less, but I got what I paid for.
I didn't have the amount of work done that you did, and I wasn't as particular about the finer details, so that all helps with a better price. The car looks fantastic on TH-cam, but it 'ok' in person. :)
Looks awesome mate! Good price too! 💪🏽 I have a friend doing my mustang at the moment, from bare metal, every panel off and etched, high build, sanded and painted for roughly £4k here in the UK. Other shops wanted £8500 plus….
Great video Andy for the people who just want a driver. It’s hard to get a good paint job here in California for a decent price because the shops name is on that job. So they don’t want to do just ok work because it bad for business. I get it but it shouldn’t cost 30 grand and up to paint a car. In my opinion.
I started body and paint in 77 and stopped in 1990 after refinishing a 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom III that placed 1st at Pebble Beach. I can't see it from here, but I think you better jump up and down and click your heels.
For 3500.00, the shop didn't go to bare metal, did NOT use epoxy, 2 coats of paint not the standard 3, maybe 2-3 coats of clear (the low budget clear) and was not rubbed out. Very good job overall, for 25-30k the entire car has to come apart.
Cost of the paint is determine by the area you live, the work that it needed and were the paint comes from. Mine has been in the body shop for a year, one thing has led to another. Now we have to repaint, I am expecting a total of 15,000 for body work and paint, we know that want be the final price. I have been working on mine for 10 years. Has at least one you tube video done and my wife has the opportunity to drive it around Daytona race track. So, it is worth it.
Well I look around and I almost cried when I was looking for someone to paint my wife's ford. It was so much. So I just did my research and went to work and painted it myself. And it's been turning heaf . People can't believe that I painted. And I done it right stripped to bair metal and came back.
$3500 is very reasonable. When I went to autobody school Imron catalyst was $19.95 a quart. Materials are insane now especially here in SoCal where they tax you to breathe. By the way, if I remember right, the Shelby stripes taper slightly towards the front. My 65 FB is the Wimbledon White/ Blue GT stripes with the spinner hubcaps...looks like the GT40 of the same year.
I paint my own cars because I won't pay the cost to have someone else do it. $2,500 to 3,500 seems like a fair price. For basic, nothing fancy, primer, urethane base, stripes, clear and supplies $650-$750. is a good rough guess for materials. Looks good and your not scared to drive and enjoy that hot rod.
Having been in the restoration business.. I’ve learned great bodywork will make “ok” paint work look very good. Bad bodywork will make great paint look bad!
The greatest advertisement used to be word of mouth. Now, word of mouth only applies to friends of friends or some guy someone went to school with. I've painted for 40yrs. I understand exactly what you mean with not wanting paint that can't be scratched up. Speaking of Maaco, you can get a show quality job from them. They are known for the quick cheap paint job but they can do a very nice job if you pay for it. You get what you pay for. The older I get, the more detail I see and the longer a paint job takes. You'd be surprised at the 9 out of 10 people who say they don't want a show paint job expects it to look like a new car off the showroom floor. 25 years ago, the average cost to do a show job was 10-$15k. People ask me today how much a paint job costs. Every person says they don't want a showroom paint job, but they don't expect a flipper job. Every vehicle is different, and the cost depends on time spent on it. Most of my jobs start at $3500. Materials have skyrocketed. A basic job that has 100 hrs spent on it is at least $5000 in labor. That's $50 an hr. You got a deal at $3500. My Mustang is Wimbledon white also with red pin stripping. It's original paint but I'm debating spraying it. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters.
I think you got a really great deal for $3500! Perfect paint jobs are for concourse trailer queens. Drive the car, enjoy the car, and remember that each new chip or flaw tells a story of how you built the car to use it.
In california they wanted 10-30k to paint my 69 mustang.. had to take to Mexico to get it done (this was not showroom paint, we are talking about a daily use type of paint job)
I understand that location can play a large role in cost, but there are places in my town that wanted that much too. I had been looking for a painter for over two years by the time I found my guy, I hope he lets me come back with my next car. :)
Yes 3500 yoy did well. I painted my wife's car myself and I have over 3k in materials and I work on it everyday from August30 to finally painting it in November. But I didn't spend a extra few weeks on gide coating the car. . A d after spraying it I took 2 weeks to cut and buff it.
Hey man it's my first ever pait job. I have never done this before. I actually painted the top in my driveway. And the blue I sprayed in a freinds paint both. It is my first ever as fast as body works paint and all. But it's actually doing well in show here in Virginia. Hey, that's a sweet Mustang you have. Imy wife would love to have it. She is a Ford Lover. She bleeds blue like her dad. I'm a chevy guy and I'm in the process of building a 1966 c10 chevy pannl truck.
Dang, wish I had someone around me that would do that nice of a job for that price. I plan on buying a compressor and gun and learning to do it myself. Looks great Andy!
Don't give up on the DIY project. If I had the space, I would have attempted it. Not everyone is cut out for this kind of project, but there's enough TH-cam help out there and time is on your side, maybe you can give it a go. :)
Man, I'm looking for paint and body guy. Have some rust coming through on my 66'. I live in Sacramento and has someine quote me 15 g's. Thats insane to me. Gonna keep in looking. I've put a lot into this car and now it only needs the body and paint for it to be a excellent car. Thanks for vid.
I do all my own metal, bodywork and paint but for that price and the amount of work, I would consider having someone else finish my projects. I don't do work for other people but if I did, I would consider that price good for me and the customer. 13 weeks when he said 8 is not bad at all. Some shops can drag out projects 10x longer than they say initially. It's not like an engine repair that is well defined. It is a dynamic process that could have infinite outcomes. One unforeseen thing could add hours or even days to the process.
Agree to disagree about the timing being fair, the car sat there for most of that time without being touched. If he wasn't going to get started on it until 3 months after I dropped it off, I would have rather waited to drop it off until he was ready to work on it. But either way, the car is done and I'm 98% happy with it, so it's a win! :)
Nice. Just got a quote from my shop to repaint my car starting at around $10k but I'm assuming all said it done, it will end up around $15-20k. Like you, I have no desire for a wonderful paint job as I just want to drive the thing and not worry about it.
@AndyKruseChannel Yep, I originally thought I could get the hood fixed and matched and get the fenderear quarters rolled. The shop said since it's single stage metallic paint, it would likely be off and rolling the fenders would possibly cause some cracks and what not. So I'll be shooting it again with a better paint job. We'll see. Keep the vids coming. Cheers 🍻
Wow this is my vision for me, however cant afford it so I got a 07 Gt500 same color scheme love the car as well nice to see the stripes when driving it it.
Labor costs are a killer if you pay someone to paint. I spent nearly 11k on a convertible because of 160 hours labor and it is no better than your paint. You got a great deal. Now I have the time and decent equipment and will do all body and paint on my other car. No substitute for doing it yourself if you take the time.
I think you made out well. I have the same “driver” mindset as you about my 66. If it makes you feel better, I found a local guy to paint a new Shelby hood and fix a rust bubble on the lower front corner of each door, and said it’d be done that weekend. Fast forward 3 weeks, and he was about to spray the white, when we made a deal to add the blue stripes rather than taking it to a vinyl shop afterward. Month and a half of exchanging texts every week and him telling me he’s been painting but never done, I finally demanded a photo update, and he sent one that was not my car. Drove over there and confronted him about it, and he hadn’t touched it since the day he said he was about to spray the white. At this point the car looked worse than when k dropped it off, and rather than just taking it from him then, he promised to get it done in a week and a half. Long story longer, I dropped off my car May 9, and I still don’t have it back. For $2500
That was a rough story and it was not to far from my experience. I think my painter crammed everything (minus a few tiny efforts to get started) in to the final week or two. I wish you luck and I hope your car turns out better than expected. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel thanks. Gets better. Today was the agreed to delivery date, and now that’s come and gone. Hood isn’t installed, stripes aren’t painted, let alone the polish and emblems/bumpers installed. Called him out that everything keeps getting delayed from his own dates and how frustrated I am, and the dude has the stones to say he isn’t apologizing for any of it and just come get my car if I think he’s a liar. Literally is a liar, was already fraudulent, and now it’s two more weeks at least. Shame on me
I think you’ve done great Andy!! I initially wanted to do the Kona blue with the white stripes as well or the white with blue like you but with so much fiberglass I was afraid my gaps would look terrible so it just ended up black I just heard your price you paid. I paid close to what you did for just supplies.
I spent a bunch of money on an electronic Torque Wrench (from Gear Wrench) when I did the rod bearings in my M3, but I haven't needed anything that precise since. I've been using the one you can get off the shelf at Napa for decades for just about everything. If I ever decide to do internal work on my engine, I'll break out that electronic unit, but everything else gets the generic torque wrench. But if I had the budget, I'd probably look at what Snapon has for me these days. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel thank you so much! I bought a cheap Pittsburgh from harbor freight but I think I’m going to take it back and spend more money on one because I’m afraid it won’t be reliable enough for my engine or body.
Your car looks absolutely amazing for $3500, you got a great deal.
Thanks! :)
Yeah I was expecting it to be $10,000 at least haha
way beyond that.
Thanks!! :)
I’m glad you did this video. I am still probably 18 months out on mine and I was reading reviews that I was going to have to spend $15-$20,000 but I don’t want a showroom. I want a driving job. I think you paid an honest amount and he gave you honest work, congratulations job well done
I hope it doesn't cost you $15k for a paint job. If it does, its next stop better be SEMA! :)
If you can take it to Lincoln College in Tennessee they used to do projects for college students. It was hands on training.
Thanks!! :)
Hi Andy, you got a nice driver with a good deal on paint. Some others have commented, but I have a friend who is getting his Charger painted and the paint alone was $10k. Excellent video!
Thanks!
honestly, if anyone says anything negative about the price for that, they have no clue what goes into doing it. and kudos to you for being a down to earth customer, cause 90% of people say they aren't expecting perfection but will when the job is done. it's a hard business to do as i've done it for the past 15yrs on my own in my own "backyard" shop. great video and walk through of what it takes to get your own vehicle painted by others.
Thanks!! :)
Andy, your a kind person, respectful. I think you got a decent price for what you wanted. I've got a 15 footer myself. An proud of it. I did paint an body work . Bless you
Thanks! :)
A Maaco paint job costs like $3500 out here in California, you got a great deal all things considered. Keep the videos coming!
I wasn't opposed to a Maaco job at first, because I would rather spend the money on go-fast parts. But in the end, while it took longer, it seems like I got a slightly better paint job for the same dollar. :)
Who did the paint? And is he in SoCal? 😂 I could use him!
Dude, that’s a great deal! Guy did a great job ….you stole it! Car looks great
Thanks!
Thanks! :)
That's a crazy story. :)
You really did get what you paid for. Hope you really are happy! Thx for sharing your story. Wish more people would do that about paint jobs.
Thanks!
Happy enough. Good news is if I ever decide to switch up the colors, at least I'm not erasing a $15k paint job. :)
That is a great deal. You did well my friend.
Thanks! :)
Agreed, any prep work and repairs done before you take it to paint will equal a cheaper price from your painter. :)
$30k is a full, bare metal classic car restoration top tier paint job now..
Ugh.... I'd rather have go-fast parts at that price point. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel Right? I could Coyote swap and fastback convert my coupe for 30k.
More desirable cars cost more to paint (not really) that's the excuse ur going to hear. I restore cars and boats for a living NEVER trust a body shop.
Enjoy!!!
Yeah, it's crazy how much prices can differ from one place to another. I'd like to do my own paint work, I just need the space to do it. :)
Yeah, it's crazy how much paint prices can vary. :)
Thanks!
I would have liked to paint it myself, but I don't have the space. :)
You are in the right mind about things happening. I used to be very particular but as I get older I just want something that looks good but is a driver and be able to enjoy my vehicles and not get upset about things happening.
Couldn't agree more. :)
Sounds like your Volvo will be pretty nice when you're done. :)
Great video Andy! That is exactly what I want. A driver that I’m not afraid of driving. This was my mom’s car and really enjoy driving it. Hopefully someday I’ll be ready for paint!
Nice! Good luck with your project, I hope it comes out as you expect it. :)
Right on!
Congrats!
Thanks! :)
I think you got a good deal on this paint job. Not a show car but nice driver quality
Agreed! :)
@@AndyKruseChannel I would be happy to get a driver quality paint job like that for what you paid
Thanks for the video Andy.
You're welcome! :)
just to sand & shoot I would have charged more than you paid for all the work you said, you got a great deal. PS i live in the same state as you 👍
Yeah, I guess it's who you know. :)
Prep work is EVERYTHING for a quality, long-lasting paint job.
Agreed.
You got it exactly perfect for 3500. There are very few people out there that will paint anything for under 5k. It looks great and the painter did a good job
Thanks! :)
Dude!!! You got a bargain AND your car looks incredible!!! Congratulations!!!
Thanks! 😁
People dont realize just how much goes into body and paint.
I sure didnt until i did it myself........
And all i did was manage to get it all one color. Satin black! Holy hell.
Yeah, sometimes these can be very large projects lurking under the surface of "cool, I can knock that out this weekend". :)
You did great. That is a great price. The car looks good😃👍🏼
Thanks! :)
Thanks!
That's a great price even for a dirt floor home paint job. A couple big glaring issues, it a normal thing to have to accept or have redone at a later time. He did a good job.
Very true! :)
Awesome, welcome aboard. :)
Good luck with your paint, I hope it comes out like you expect. :)
That car looks fantastic especially for the price you paid. Don't be depressed about it, you said it yourself, you want a driver that you don't have to baby the hell out of. You got a good deal IMO.
Great! 😊
Andy, Thanks for sharing your paint story. I think it looks awesome.
Thanks! :)
WHO THUMBS DOWN ? IT IS A FIRST GEN MUSTANG YOU GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha, I think I have some haters out there. Or maybe they just don't like to rubbing my jeans on the new paint. :)
Yeah, it’s crazy how different paint prices and work can vary. 🙂
You got a smokin deal ! Cost me $8K here in So Cal for a similar job. I was quoted as high as $25K and most prices averaged around $12-14K. It's crazy !!
Yeah, it’s crazy how much these paint jobs can vary in price. 🙂
Thanks 👍
Drive it with pride, I think it looks terrific!
Will do, thanks. :)
...you got an amazing deal, exactly what you wanted and a very, very fair price.
Yes indeed! :)
Hey I think you did very well for your paint job. Don't sweat it. The car looks good and it is meant to be driven! Real Shelbys have paint chips. Drive the car and enjoy life and don't sweat it!
Thanks! Working on new paint chips, but it's soo hot right now that I don't want to melt inside my car. :)
Agreed. :)
$3500 IS 1990'S prices. It looks amazing for the money you spent.
I'm ok with that, I could go back to the 90s for a while. Maybe make a few changes.......
Thanks! :)
Thank you!
@@moviemark5464 Sorry, I do not recall the order in which the panels come out of the car and go back in. :)
as someone who has painted several of my own cars in similar conditions, that guy put more than 35 shop hours into that I would guess, plus the cost of all the consumables (which is a lot) plus the cost of paint which ranges wildly. all in all, that guy put in a lot of hours for what he really got paid out of it.
Haha, yeah, I'm usually that guy, but it's not the Bingo hall, yet. :)
It looks a lot better than the factor paint that came on that car, you did well on the time frame also including the extra work. If you check the price of paint supplies and materials you’ll see you did very well on the price. Andy, you need to put your magnifying glass away and quit over thinking it, the car looks fantastic!
Ha, that's tough to do, we tend to be our worst critics. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel But the main thing, we're having a good time and enjoying our cars!
You got a great paint job for what you paid. I’m like you, it’s more important to enjoy than to worry about scratching it. Matter of fact my one year old dropped a screw driver on the car recently 🙃
It's crazy that it has already been a year. Soon you'll have a new helper for the garage. :)
Good deal
Like you said- you got what you wanted
Agreed. :)
Excellent job. More than fair price. There were a lot of man hours to fix things before actual paint.
Thanks! :)
They fucked you on that mat’l quote.
I didn't have the amount of work done that you did, and I wasn't as particular about the finer details, so that all helps with a better price. The car looks fantastic on TH-cam, but it 'ok' in person. :)
Looks awesome mate! Good price too! 💪🏽
I have a friend doing my mustang at the moment, from bare metal, every panel off and etched, high build, sanded and painted for roughly £4k here in the UK. Other shops wanted £8500 plus….
Yeah, it's crazy how much the price can fluctuate from place to place. :)
Great video Andy for the people who just want a driver. It’s hard to get a good paint job here in California for a decent price because the shops name is on that job. So they don’t want to do just ok work because it bad for business. I get it but it shouldn’t cost 30 grand and up to paint a car. In my opinion.
Very true
I started body and paint in 77 and stopped in 1990 after refinishing a 1937 Rolls Royce Phantom III that placed 1st at Pebble Beach. I can't see it from here, but I think you better jump up and down and click your heels.
The problem with clicking my heels is the darn red, sparkly slippers don't do anything. :)
Andy looks awesome!! Can't see the paint flaws when you're driving it and that's all that matters! Enjoy that ride.
Thanks!! :)
For 3500.00, the shop didn't go to bare metal, did NOT use epoxy, 2 coats of paint not the standard 3, maybe 2-3 coats of clear (the low budget clear) and was not rubbed out. Very good job overall, for 25-30k the entire car has to come apart.
That's fine by me, more money for go-fast parts. :)
Ouch, I hope your car is at least $15k better than when it went into the shop when you get it back. I hope it all works out for you. :)
You were in "body shop jail" lol
Well I look around and I almost cried when I was looking for someone to paint my wife's ford. It was so much. So I just did my research and went to work and painted it myself. And it's been turning heaf . People can't believe that I painted. And I done it right stripped to bair metal and came back.
Yeah, stripping the car down to metal would have been great as there's a few issues I'd like to deal with, but the budget just was there. :)
Yeah, the stripes do taper, there's a whole page on the stripe widths at various locations that I gave my painter. :)
Andy.
I’ve been given 2 quotes to paint my coupe and it’s between 18k to 24 k AUD so I think you got a great deal.
Cheers
From Australia
Gary
Your car will probably come out nicer than mine, so maybe that price isn't that bad?
I paint my own cars because I won't pay the cost to have someone else do it. $2,500 to 3,500 seems like a fair price. For basic, nothing fancy, primer, urethane base, stripes, clear and supplies $650-$750. is a good rough guess for materials. Looks good and your not scared to drive and enjoy that hot rod.
Perfect, now I've got a backup painter if my main guy calls it quits. :)
You got a deal. Mine was $10k in 2000. I did get my GT350 rocker stripes painted on instead of stickers.
Yeah, but your paint is probably a lot nicer than mine, so there's that. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel it is 34 years old now, so starting to show its age enough so that I can drive it without too much fear.
Having been in the restoration business.. I’ve learned great bodywork will make “ok” paint work look very good. Bad bodywork will make great paint look bad!
That makes sense, my car is probably somewhere in the middle. :)
Awesome, thanks!! :)
I think you got a really great deal for $3500! Perfect paint jobs are for concourse trailer queens. Drive the car, enjoy the car, and remember that each new chip or flaw tells a story of how you built the car to use it.
Yeah, chips add character. I just want to drive! :)
For 3500 dollars you did fantastic 👍👍
Thanks! :)
Yeah, but I bet your car looks way better. And I bet she's happy, so it's difficult to put a price on that. :)
Great video! My sentiments exactly on my car and its paint. Far from perfect, but great from 10ft. Thanks for sharing!
We're in the 10-footer club!
Yeah, it's crazy how different the prices can be from one city to another, from one shop to another. :)
Those colors are sweet
Thanks!! :)
YOUR A FOMOCO GUY, GOODMAN !!
Thanks! :)
Great price for that paint job!!! I was quoted 15k to paint my 67 el Camino, that has very little body work needed.
Yeah, it's crazy how much paint prices can vary. :)
You got a good deal. Looks great.
Thanks 👍
Nice. Just got a quote from my shop to repaint my car starting at around $10k but I'm assuming all said it done, it will end up around $15-20k. Like you, I have no desire for a wonderful paint job as I just want to drive the thing and not worry about it.
Hopefully your hood will come out better on the other end. That was painful to watch. :)
Cheers 🍻
Andy that’s an awesome price and it looks really good. I’ve been quoted 8K plus.
I bet your $8k paint job would look way nicer, but not everyone needs that kind of work done. I'd rather spend the money on go-fast parts. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel yes, I’m still searching for a guy in the 3.5K range :) but no easy to find in California. I want to enjoy and drive the car.
Beautiful 🤩 I had a 65’mustang I had a 351 but got divorced had to sell it 😢
Yeah, sometimes we gotta take the "L" to get things done. :)
3,500 you got a hell of a deal. Kudos to your body man.
Yeah, I like good deals. :)
Paint job looks great, and the price was more then fair. Where are you located at?
Thanks! :)
I thought all along that this paint job was going to cost, $3500. Super Nice
Great. :)
Wow this is my vision for me, however cant afford it so I got a 07 Gt500 same color scheme love the car as well nice to see the stripes when driving it it.
That '07 is still a fun car to mess with, hopefully the HP bug doesn't bite too hard and you end up selling a kidney. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel lol enjoy your beautiful car.
I hear ya, I would have done the work myself if I had the space. :)
Just make sure you have a true 289 hypo engine
Nah, I'd rather have the engine I've got now. :)
You didn't put a 350 Chevy in there did you@@AndyKruseChannel
If only there was a way for you to see all the videos I have uploaded on my channel...... :)
Shame on me
For reference, I spent twice that on materials and paint.
Good to know. :)
I think you’ve done great Andy!! I initially wanted to do the Kona blue with the white stripes as well or the white with blue like you but with so much fiberglass I was afraid my gaps would look terrible so it just ended up black I just heard your price you paid. I paid close to what you did for just supplies.
Considering how my hood came out, maybe I should have done black too? That's the beauty of black paint, it'll hide those gaps so well. :)
I'd say you did really well. The shape those 1/4s were in should be way more than $500....
They were worse than they looked, dude helped me a ton with them. :)
Hey Mr. Kruse! Love the videos and advice you give out! I’ve been stuck on what torque wrench to get. Do you have any advice on a good torque wrench?
Wow, what a deal! Looks great. I’d love to find a similar deal in my area.
Maybe talk to people at local car meets and such, that's how I found my guy. :)
