I thought this was a great video. Also, the ‘88 Mustang T-top is pretty rare car too. ‘87 was to be the last year of the t-top but Ford built more t-top shells than they sold so the leftover bodies were built & sold in/as ‘88s. They wanted to push the units out so instead of cutting hardtop door window frames, ford used convertible doors so ‘88 t-top cars have flag style side view mirrors instead of the ones that stick out from the front corner of the window. I’ve tried to figure out actual build numbers for these cars but I’ve found a lot of different answers. One said as little as 281 t-top Mustangs were made for 1988 & I’ve seen that number span up to 10,001.
You buried the Lead....Whatever happened to those two FR500 beasts ? Are they sitting in someone's garage or parked next to the SR-72 in a desert in Nevada ?
One that probably should of made the list: a Mustang prototype by John Coletti from 98' named, 'The Super Stallion' A 5.4L modular blown engine making 500+ HP
Factually incorrect - 1998 was NOT the last year of the SN95, 2004 was. The facelifted Mustang running from 1999 to the 2004 model years, also known as the New Edge, was still an SN95, despite having completely different door skins, exterior lower body panels and rear quarter windows, it still had the same roof, body glass and interior as the earlier Mustangs.
Fair but that's like saying that 2023 isn't the last year of the S550 because the S650 shares the same core chassis even tho its a different gen - just easier to explain and differentiate by the bodystyles.
@@rarecars3336Even though I completely agree on the S650 being a glorified S550 facelift the fact is that Ford has changed the generation as per model year 2024 to S650. They never did this with the New Edge facelift of the SN95. That was just a facelift with no generation change, so all cars from 1994 up to 2004 are all one single generation called SN95 and its last model year was 2004.
I can tell when a TH-cam video is factually correct and when it's not. In the mid 80's my buddie had a 84 GT 350, t-top, 4-speed & at the time with the work done to it had 250 HP naturally aspirated & was very fast for that time. 😎👍
As a Mustang fan and enthusiast, thank you for educating me on these rare cars! It's amazing to see the reasons that go behind these rare Mustangs being built! They will always live on in the legacy of modern Mustangs! You never know what Ford can cook up next in terms of rare Mustangs. We already got the GTD rolling in.
Nice video. I am very familiar with the mustang's mentioned. Also wanted to let you know as slow as the 1984 1/2 GT350 it's still popular and a good collector car due to its low production of 5200 units. Now lastly 11 of those were given to fords upper corporate guys. Very rare 11 cars.
I remember that Car and Driver “test” between the Boss Mustang and the Camaro. It was supposed to be drag testing and handling. The Mustang won the drag race but they hurt the engine doing it so it only made one lap around the road course. There’s video out there of this.

I stopped to watch this video upon seeing the 84 GT 350 included in the line up. Sadly when it comes to rare Mustangs , especially of that era you missed the mark. How do I know? Because I'm an owner of the very rare 83.5 GT Turbo Mustang of which there were only 556 made. The GT Turbo was an early build 84 using the same engine as in the 83 Turbo T Bird but with less weight. It also made its way into the Capri Turbo RS. These cars made 145 hp that it true , but it was equivilant to the 302 V8 engine in the 82 Camaro and Firebird. It's lower weight made it very competitive with its contemporaries. The GT Turbo engine was also Fords very first computer controlled manifold fuel injected engine using 30 lb. injectors predating the 5.0 manifold injected engine by 4 years. The 2.3 Liter Lima engine could have very easily competed directly with fords 5.0 liter as Ford had already experimented with a double overhead cam version as found on the Volvo 2.3l engine to make easily 225 hp. but the car was more expensive to build with even the single overhead cam and poor sales of the GT Turbo were attributed to a higher price for a four cylinder engine making 30 less horsepower than the 5.0. This despite it being more in line with European style sports cars that I believe Ford was hoping to compete against with this idea. The GT Turbo was slotted to fit in between the 5.0 GT and the SVO of 84. But with only another 2700 more sold in 84 the GT Turbo was discontinued after that. That then makes this car an even rarer model that is so rare many people know nothing of its history.
God, I loved Mustangs. Very first car was a 1979 5.0 💩 poop brown. Was like a rocket. 1995 V6 5 speed...nice but nothing exciting. Then a 2002 SVT convertible. Loved that beast. August 1998 Car and Driver did an article about the Kenny Brown 289RS. They have 1/4 mile times, 150mph times, and a pretty unimpressive zero to 60 time. That car is very well known, and has been for a couple of decades
Used to work for the shop that helped build the Iacocca Mustang GT. They are quite stunning, especially the dark red/maroon one. They were sold with a Brake upgrade kit, and Whipple Supercharger but weren't installed immediately, as it was up to the customer if they wanted to add it.
It wasn't because it was "too dangerous" they didn't have a trans to hold the torque it was just a regular restricted 351 with 2 small turbos it didn't make CRAZY hp prob 350-400 hp at 500+ tq if I was guessing which was alot more than 225/300 of normal 5.0s of the day so the car obviously had traction issues and like I said no transmission at the time they had could hold that torque.
The G.T. 350, a name made famous in the 60's by Ford and Carroll Shelby, was given new life in March of 1984 with a production run of 5,261 cars. As a result, Mr. Shelby sued Ford Motor Company in April of 1988 for using the stripe and name.
I was not aware of the mustang getting a 10 liter Boss 429, I was sure that engine was out of production shortly after Nascar ban the engine, I went to Rousch Fenway Racing and did not see that car but, I did see a Mustang II with a 460.
Can you make a video about Roush mustangs , lots of cool cars there with limited production and especially the super charged, California special , Boyd coddington edition
Colleti was the boss at SVT but they farmed out a lot of work. I remember the magazine article and the engine was Roush built (and kept eating pushrods).
List video was great. Really liked the capturing of vehicle heritage encapsulated "rare" as it says on the label. No BS just a concise equality distributed content per list entry, free of bias (bias over time as technology increases means we can't compare apples with apples but you've gone about this in a way that seems fair and just. Well done. I enjoyed this compilation. Maybe perhaps you could branch out and look at the craziest performance shop after market deliveries of vehicles? Your mention of the Mustang Saleen or the Shelby SSC as whole episode focal points, perhaps? Maybe you've already done segments doing exactly that and I've just watched them yet? One of rarest Mustangs is the Saleen (pronounced Suh leen') wide-body from 1997 (not the S351). I know of only two produced: the Mystic example sat in the Irvine showroom for years, and the white example was parked outside the Saleen-Allen pit at Laguna Seca. It was also featured in their parts catalog.

In 1997 I talked to the Saleen crew at the racetrack and, if I recall correctly, the car had a 351W, a tight-fitting roll cage, Alcon brakes, and an IRS. At the time you could order the carbon body panels (fenders, quarters, hood, etc.) through Saleen.
Nice video - I remember all of those cars. My first car was a red 1984 Mustang GT. It had the red interior also. I think it was called canyon red - it was the brighter of the two exterior reds. Your engine images for the FR500 are incorrect and maybe you knew that. The DOHC engine picture is actually a SOHC engine. I had two IROC-Zs after the 84 GT, an 85 5.0 TPI and then an 87 5.7 TPI and both were yellow. The 85 was of course stolen and the 87 replaced it. After that came two LX 5.0 coupes, both bright red with black, 5-speeds. One was a 91 model that I eventually totaled unfortunately. I replaced it with a 93 and had that one for about 12 years. I had a red 97 GT after that and then a yellow 98 Cobra which I owned for 8 years. Those were the automotive glory days, ha.
I’m really surprised by today’s manufacturers NOT building quality & high HP V6s. Not just turbo chargers & nitrous. Good & strong factory V6 w/ high performance internal parts. Around 2000 my buddy in Brooks Georgia purchased one of Jeff Gordon’s Chevys. Had the absolute MEANEST V6 in it that I’ve ever seen. No BS w/ it, just a built V6 & done right by the pros. *Atlanta speed-tune shop (close to the speedway) testing the car out & it was putting down massive HP & good torque. Just sayin’- today’s manufacturers should be building these for our cars! The weight loss is a big plus!
Back when I read Motor Trend pretty regularly, they did a full story about the BOSS 10L Mustang, but that was the only one I knew about. Technically, Roush bored out the 429 block to 9.9L, but Coletti (the Ford exec behind the project) engaged in a bit of "creative" rounding (like when the 4942cc (302) V8 is rounded up to 5.0L) and christened it the BOSS 10L. And apparently at the end of media day at the track (and quite a bit of very hard driving by automotive journalists) the C6 transmission died. Ford just didn't have an "off-the-shelf" transmission that could handle that monster under the hood for long.
In terms of rare cars, please consider doing videos of the OTAS (some versions known as the Lombardi SS or the Abarth Scorpion) and the ASA 1000. I doubt one person in 10,000 has ever seen or heard of these two.
When the Iacocca Mustang came out, I totally wanted to mod my 08 BULLITT to incorporate the front and rear improvements to make it look even more like a 68 fastback. Unfortunately, parts weren’t made available for customers outside the Galpin sold complete vehicles
The disappointment from not seeing the super stallion, arguably the coolest modern mustang to ever be made but you did mention the 289RS, iaccoca, and the GT350. Any of those three could be knocked off in favor if the SS.
I remember some of those cars that were featuring magazines back then. I never thought of the experimental cars as rare because they were just engineering exercises rather than production vehicles. The rare car would be the 84 GT350. I thought they’d made more than 200 of them. I recall seeing more than a couple in my little corner of the Midwest. A friend bought one used - had the 302 4V with the SROD four speed. It was his daily driver as he continued to transform his 65 289 coupe into a drag car.
1st car was a 1990 LX 5.0 hatchback . Bought in 1993 for $5700. Back when 225 horsepower was a lot. Don’t think you can buy a 3 year old 5.0 mustang for less than 25-30K these days .

I worked for Mclaren Engines in Livonia Michigan when they were working on the FR 500 there's a good SEMA story on the show car. there were 3 cars 2 test cars and 1 show car the show car was 480hp.
Was the second test car black and how similar was it to the white one? I've never seen any pictures of the black one. I got FR500 wheels for my 2002 GT and learned a lot about the FR500 project from the web and the 02/2000 issue of Car and Driver.
Great video. Love Mustangs. Just some of the editing during the FR500 seemed not on point unless those other models were early versions. That would have been an iconic model if Ford had released it.
How about a history of boss 302... I thought about buying a used one a few years ago built in '14? Or '17....but kinda of a striped car.for.track and street use
I had a very rare Mustang. It was a 1978 Mustang 2 Fastback hatchback. 302 Cleveland, automatic with a shifter lever on the floor that looked like a jet plane accelerator. We put a cobra ram air on the hood to house the larger custom Holley carburetor. Wood Steering wheel, slightly dark red on the bottom, cream white on top, red leather seats, and bigger, fatter tires on the back. It was pretty fast and very loud, but got fairly decent gas mileage at around 20 mpg average (as long as it wasn't all city driving and I didn't gun it too much).
I think you did a great job for this video but I was looking for a special mustang some kid in my neighborhood had it I think I said coyote on the side and it was new
All these rare Mustang videos I have watched not 1 talks about the Super Stallion, SAAC Snakes or the 1988 built by Roush with a 5.8l twin turbo that produced 400hp.
I own 3 one is a identical home improvement Tim Allen, & the other 2 are convertibles one is the same as married with children & the other is a white with red interior white top 🏆

I remember driving the FR500 a ton in Ford Racing 2, that and the FR200 Focus were some of my favourites in that game!

The Boss engine was eating pushrods. You'd expect better from a Roush product but perhaps they hurriedly threw it together.

The Iacocca 45th Anniversary Mustang is why I ordered my 2011 GT500 in silver with stripe delete.

That 10l mustang was built by John coletti not roush one of those pictures is also of a Shinoda boss.

After that came two LX 5.0 coupes, both bright red with black, 5-speeds. One was a 91 model that I eventually totaled unfortunately. I replaced it with a 93 and had that one for about 12 years. I had a red 97 GT after that and then a yellow 98 Cobra which I owned for 8 years. Those were the automotive glory days, ha.
I’m really surprised by today’s manufacturers NOT building quality & high HP V6s. Not just turbo chargers & nitrous. Good & strong factory V6 w/ high performance internal parts. Around 2000 my buddy in Brooks Georgia purchased one of Jeff Gordon’s Chevys. Had the absolute MEANEST V6 in it that I’ve ever seen. No BS w/ it, just a built V6 & done right by the pros.
*Atlanta speed-tune shop (close to the speedway) testing the car out & it was putting down massive HP & good torque. Just sayin’- today’s manufacturers should be building these for our cars! The weight loss is a big plus!

I had a classic ‘66 Mustang with the 289 engine and had a ‘98 Mustang. Maybe I’ll buy another one someday.

Back when I read Motor Trend pretty regularly, they did a full story about the BOSS 10L Mustang, but that was the only one I knew about. Technically, Roush bored out the 429 block to 9.9L, but Coletti (the Ford exec behind the project) engaged in a bit of "creative" rounding (like when the 4942cc (302) V8 is rounded up to 5.0L) and christened it the BOSS 10L. And apparently at the end of media day at the track (and quite a bit of very hard driving by automotive journalists) the C6 transmission died. Ford just didn't have an "off-the-shelf" transmission that could handle that monster under the hood for long.
In terms of rare cars, please consider doing videos of the OTAS (some versions known as the Lombardi SS or the Abarth Scorpion) and the ASA 1000. I doubt one person in 10,000 has ever seen or heard of these two.
When the Iacocca Mustang came out, I totally wanted to mod my 08 BULLITT to incorporate the front and rear improvements to make it look even more like a 68 fastback. Unfortunately, parts weren’t made available for customers outside the Galpin sold complete vehicles
The body lines of the Iococca Mustang is what I had envisioned the “new” Mach 1 should have been…..a genuine FASTBACK.
The disappointment from not seeing the super stallion, arguably the coolest modern mustang to ever be made but you did mention the 289RS, iaccoca, and the GT350. Any of those three could be knocked off in favor if the SS.
Are s197’s with glass roofs rare? I recall that being an option but I’ve never actually seen one.
I remember some of those cars that were featuring magazines back then. I never thought of the experimental cars as rare because they were just engineering exercises rather than production vehicles. The rare car would be the 84 GT350. I thought they’d made more than 200 of them. I recall seeing more than a couple in my little corner of the Midwest. A friend bought one used - had the 302 4V with the SROD four speed. It was his daily driver as he continued to transform his 65 289 coupe into a drag car.

1st car was a 1990 LX 5.0 hatchback . Bought in 1993 for $5700. Back when 225 horsepower was a lot. Don’t think you can buy a 3 year old 5.0 mustang for less than 25-30K these days .
This is exactly why I’m never selling my 90 GT Vert. Paid $3200 for it 10 years ago, and it had 51k orig miles with a Tremec 3550 in it…
The FR500 is very intriguing considering I've been thinking about what would it take to extend the wheel base of my 2001 Mustang.

I worked for Mclaren Engines in Livonia Michigan when they were working on the FR 500 there's a good SEMA story on the show car. there were 3 cars 2 test cars and 1 show car the show car was 480hp.

Was the second test car black and how similar was it to the white one? I've never seen any pictures of the black one. I got FR500 wheels for my 2002 GT and learned a lot about the FR500 project from the web and the 02/2000 issue of Car and Driver.
Great video. Love Mustangs. Just some of the editing during the FR500 seemed not on point unless those other models were early versions. That would have been an iconic model if Ford had released it.
The 10L was not a Roush motor, IIRC it was a Jon Kaase racing motor.
How about a history of boss 302... I thought about buying a used one a few years ago built in '14? Or '17....but kinda of a striped car.for.track and street use

I had a very rare Mustang. It was a 1978 Mustang 2 Fastback hatchback. 302 Cleveland, automatic with a shifter lever on the floor that looked like a jet plane accelerator. We put a cobra ram air on the hood to house the larger custom Holley carburetor. Wood Steering wheel, slightly dark red on the bottom, cream white on top, red leather seats, and bigger, fatter tires on the back. It was pretty fast and very loud, but got fairly decent gas mileage at around 20 mpg average (as long as it wasn't all city driving and I didn't gun it too much).

All these rare Mustang videos I have watched not 1 talks about the Super Stallion, SAAC Snakes or the 1988 built by Roush with a 5.8l twin turbo that produced 400hp.
