Happy to hear another no-till success story! I was hoping the linked video would share details of the side-by-side experiment and its results, but then it was high-level organic vs inorganic gardening, backed by scary music -- a concise + quick intro into why so many people are proponents of no-till, but also QUITE the tone-shift after a typical, calming Roots and Refuge video, lol

Most people don't have a tiller, but many still 'fork' their soil, which is a more labor intensive version of tilling. It's the disturbance of the soil that is the key part in tilling/forking/turning the soil. Definitely agree Jess should do what is in her heart :)
I ended up getting sick at the end of July, including a hospital stay, and then couldn't lift anything once I was released. I showed myself some grace. I knew my health was more important and ignored my garden for a time. Yesterday was the first time I got to go back into my garden. Hornworms decimated my plants, other plants were dead or overgrown, some were setting new fruit. At first, I was devastated but then I paused, gently thanked each plant for all that it had provided, harvested what I could and made myself a lovely dinner from my harvest. There's always next season and I learned a ton. I just remind myself, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven"

Jess you’ve changed my life with little phrases like “turn your waiting room into a classroom”. I’m an impatient person but you’ve given me strength and validated the time before I can actively work toward my goals as learning time. I can’t thank you enough
I have never grown a garden until this year because there hasn’t been enough sunlight in our yard. We took some big trees down and I was able to grow a baby garden. I’ve learned a lot this year and will be expanding my baby garden to a kid size garden. I enjoyed canning and dehydrating a lot but realize that my yard will never be able to support all the canning id like to do. I vote chickens! That sounds like such an interesting journey to watch and learn from. Especially from beginning to end in Jess style. I would love that.
I struggled for a few years trying to grow a “typical” in ground garden that we tilled every year. It was back breaking hard work! And we almost never had worms. And we had tons and tons of weeds! It was never ending hoeing. I gave up gardening all together for several years. Then I started watching some TH-cam gardening channels, and I learned about raised beds and making my own compost. This was 2 years ago. Now I have all raised beds filled with my own homemade compost. We hardly ever pull weeds ( at least nothing like we did before). The first video of yours I watched was the one on how to make a trellis out of a cattle panel. We added a trellis to our beautiful raised beds this year, and now there is nowhere I’d rather be than in my garden! The raised beds we made all have little ledges around them for sitting, so it’s really easy to sit and tend the garden. Our beds are full of worms and beneficial insects that are a great delight to our grandkids. So, long story short - I vote for raised beds all the way! I would never go back to tilling the ground for planting vegetables. Charles Dowding is right 😊
Kristie, So much yes! Us too. Just thought we were incapable of having a nice garden. First year of raised beds went well and would love to do an in ground, no till bed. :). Such a huge learning curve.
I love my in ground tilled garden! I put down a bunch of weed barrier, and wood planks to walk between rows, and I do not get any weeds. Although, my raised beds get weeds, so I have the opposite problem..lol I also like that I don’t have to water my tilled garden very much, whereas if we don’t get rain, those raised beds are dry in a day with the Summer heat. So that’s definitely a daily chore with them. I still have both, but my in ground garden is my best producer, by far..:))
I think you should do a no tilled garden to be able to teach others 🥰🥳 . I love love love your vlogs I can’t say thank you enough for inspiration to grow everything 😜🤩🥰
I've had a variety of gardening experiences. This year I had two window sills as my garden and grew lettuce, dill, daisies and beets. I'm beyond thrilled by this gardening experience. Thanks Jess for promoting to start right where you are.
Thank you for the Give Yourself Grace pep talk. Older woman, divorced, early retirement due to COVID and am able to do 3 small raised beds right now. I needed to hear it was ok to just let myself do those and not struggle financially or physically to push it for more.
18:05 "In exact circumstances that I'm living in with the resources that I have and ability that I have what can I do now?" Life lesson for ever! I needed to hear this today, thank you.
A million LEARNING opportunities! You are right... try to GROW YOU OWN. So much VALUE, so MANY REWARDS. Start small but DREAM BIG. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Personalized gardening, that’s why we all love listening to you. Look past the “rules” and garden in a way that is realistic and joyful for who you are in your season.
Honestly, you can keep preaching thats same message until the cows come home. Because, you always seem to resist it, right when I need a little encouragement. So thank you 😌.
Such intuitive and inspirational words from one so young. I’m 68 and only wish I knew half of what you do before I was 30. Love you and Miah and your wonderful family. Bless you 💞
I love watching your garden videos... such wise advice from a beautiful young woman.. focus on the stage of your life, learn from your mistakes, turn your waiting room into a classroom... perfect! 😊 After many years of gardening we built raised beds, and I absolutely love them! Truly my happy place.
Thank God you have Nana & Poppy!!! My Grandparents are gone!!! My Parents are gone!!! Pull them to your hearts, & love them till time is gone!!! I wish I still had mine to hold onto!!!! 🌈😇❤
I would LOVE LOVE to see a no till method like Charles Dowding used! Watching the chickens used to help break down the soil, etc. is such a great educational and wonderful learning experience.☺️🙏
How can people possibly be mad at you? We all do what needs to be done. And over time we get what we want. 🌹🌹never be discouraged. This is indeed a work of Our Lord. Your family is incredibly blessed and I LOVE rhat.
”just learn with what you have in your hands” Thank you, Jess, I needed that. Tending to an elderly mother and doing my little garden, and learning to can food. I felt like I haven't had time to do it all well. But I can say, ”I have learned with what has been placed in my hands.”
Thank you for your words of wisdom, 43 years ago I had a had a huge garden and small farm in Kansas. I left there and pursued my professional goals, even became a CEO of a major company. Now, retired, I appreciate that self sustaining dream of raising food in my garden.
I like your phrase “turn your waiting room into a class room”. It’s very helpful and helps you to have hope, as there’s something you can do right now to start the process and be in a better place to succeed when the dream garden/farm comes along. I like your “partnering with the desires of your heart” phrase too, it’s another hopeful one. I’m currently growing all in containers right now, corn and tomatoes included 😁
"Tiller, NO tilling!" (In my Dora voice) Tilling disturbs all of the micro-organisms, cuts up the worms, depletes the soil of so many good things. I'm also a big fan of Charles Dowding. He sold me on no till gardening.
I loved your comment about gardening for the particular season you are in. You have inspired this 72 year old to do more with my garden than I ever have and it has really blessed me. I find I wish I would have done more earlier in life, wish I had a larger garden, wish we had a longer growing season....lots of wishes...but then I remind myself that I have what is manageable for this season of my life. And you have made it richer.
I love seeing all the votes for no till. I've been advocating no till to all my friends this year. So much better for the soil and easier once it's established.
What words of encouragement! I am in that season with three babies 4, 2, and 1. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, friend Jess. You are speaking to me. ❤️ God bless you! 🥰🤓
I think if you'd rather do a no till garden and build up the soil there you should do it. It would be just as interesting for us to watch as everything else you do :P
Thank you for reminding me to have kind thoughts for myself. Watching the TH-cam gardeners can sometimes set me up for a too lofty goal, but your candor and occasional "hot mess" in the garden really helps me realize that I am learning, and that just gardening and growing with whatever you can manage or have available, are the most wise and kind words to be offered. Thank you.
No till garden series of pretty much start to finish , taking up every aspect for all of us willing to learn.Up until this very moment you have done so well with it all.I send you my warm appreciation.
So this is one of the reasons you are my favorite TH-cam channel.... This video... and this attitude that you demonstrate regularly.... Thanks for the encouragement and edification and advice to move forward in any circumstance. Thanks for being so real! I've learned so much attitude from you this garden season which is really one if the biggest keys to really do this life long term!
Besides being such a wonderful teacher, you are the cheerleader that so many people need. Thank you for letting me personally know that i can do my gardens with what i have in my hands now. I don't have to have it all Now. Thank you.
Thanks, Jess. This was an awesome message. I didn't think it applied to me until you said until we die, we all need to eat. I am 65 and live in a rented condo. When I watch gardeners and homesteaders on youtube, I miss my house and land and big garden. But now you have me thinking more in terms of what I CAN do, rather than what I can't. Thank you! Love from Maine.
I was sent to your channel by Meghan Hughes about a month ago and I’ve been binge watching ever since. I really want to say this video could not have found me at a better time. I will be turning my waiting room into a classroom from this day forward. This can apply to so many things in life. I appreciate the conversations and ideas you open up about on this channel. You’re a very intelligent speaker and you make people wanna listen. I was already gardening before starting to watch your channel, but because of you & the knowledge I have now, I’m planting a fall garden for the first time this year. I can’t thank you enough for all you do. Not just gardening. Sometimes we all need these reminders in life but don’t put the effort to seek them out & I love how you sneak in these important conversations on a video like this. Thank you
Speak it girl! You just preached directly at me this morning as me and my 18 month old watched you this morning. I love you, your family and your vision and sometimes some people just need a little motivation to keep going on their own vision. Thank you for your motivation this morning. Thank you for reminding me that my current chapter is just a learning stage for my next chapter. 🙏😘
You are so wise for such a young woman. I Love to watch your beautiful spirit shine through your videos, thank you for sharing your wisdom. We love the back to eden garden method. This is our fourth year and we keep expanding each year.
I believe you should go with your heart and follow this education by example you've been graced with. Especially with the state of the world these days you and your family are an inspiration and Blessing. Thank you.
I’ve been so inspired to really get more educated about your lifestyle...watched tons of videos of people you have recommended but always find I prefer your approach and your kindness...thank you!
I love the black chicken with the top hat! I'm a city girl and I didn't know there was such a sassy looking chicken. She looks like she's getting ready for church! LOL! All I've ever seen are the brown chickens.
Thank you so much for your advice and wisdom. You said the exact words that I needed to hear. My youngest son is not yet 2 years old and he keeps me from being able to do everything that I want to do. I have learned a lot in the moments when I was waiting for opportunity to do something. I enjoy watching your videos and I very much look forward to reading your book.
Jessica I can't tell you how much you have helped me this year. You have encouraged me to build my garden. It did not do as well as I had hoped. I have used it as my classroom and will try again with a fall garden. The garden has been my place of hope. My husband is a hospice patient and requires a lot of my time, I am fortunate to be able to work from home and I am in my 60ies. But I have pushed through and built 6 4x4 and one 2 x12 raised beds. I did 3 4 x 12 in ground beds. These will bed converted to raised beds this fall. Learning everyday. Thanks for the encouragement.
My 70 year old waiting room netted me my 1st canned peach jelly using The Peach Truck box of peaches and like you, a great deal on strawberries which turned into strawberry preserves! You absolutely can use whatever place and time you find yourself in to learn and grow! Love your channel and y'all's sweet spirit! Blessings!
Love your channel. I have been vacationing in northern Arkansas with my 89 year old mother, she keeps looking for peoples gardens and produce stands for tomatoes. I keep telling her we need to visit roots and refuge for a tomato sandwich. Lol she is now watching your channel and giving you advice you can’t hear, and saying well I never knew that. Just to show you are never to old to learn. Keep on blessing and may you and your family always be blessed.
You're advice in this video is spot on.... So much to take from all that you have to say &share! Thank you! I appreciate you outlook for the future and the reminder to not forget to live for the now, be present to be thankful for our own stages in life....as different as they may be. 💚
I followed a few channels with this type of great advice! I started with what I had a few potatoes growing eyes! 😊 I have started with learning container gardening because of time and being in the desert, all I have is sand everywhere 🤣. Then I added a squash bucket! Basil! Thyme! A tub for cucumbers! Finally, so happy, I planted peas last night! My point is .. videos like these really help those of us who didn't know where to start! I started and now I'm addicted! Designing now and gathering materials for my first raise bed ... here 6 months later! Thank u! God bless you for these videos!
Excellent advice -“have grace for yourself for the season you are in”. That is a very tough and important life lesson. It’s taken me (and still working on it) a lot of years to start thinking that way. Thank you for sharing.
I am working my previously tilled bed toward a no till. I HATE the wild grass that grows knee high in a week. I love playing in the dirt. But, weeding can rob my joy. My cow panel tomatoes WERE THE BOMB. Thank you, I love your show. I am ordering your book for me & my 2 daughters who are also former black thumb growers. 💜💜💜🙏🙏🙏
As a person recovering from chronic illnesses, and probably never be 100%- that talk was very good to hear. I love my garden and I know it will be big and amazing one day
I'm in a very similar position I believe. I face fibromyalgia and blood pressure issues. Just remember to do what you can when you can and enjoy the time you do. I'm occasionally bedridden for a few weeks at a time but I still pushed for a major upgrade to my garden this year. Installed much taller raised beds, 30", and it's an amazing difference and is much easier on me to work in. Next year will be even better since my grow season won't be delayed by installation and I can start much earlier. Due to that time being bed bound, I missed the main window to string up my tomatoes so this year it was a jungle in there, lol, but still very productive. Remember to push yourself through funks but still recognize your limitations. Always try though and I wish you the best towards your goals!
I have two inground beds, for my big space crops. And they are no dig. I sometimes allow the chickens to till it at the end of winter but normally I throw some green manure crops in, chop and drop then add on well rotted horse poo, compost and tarp it to bring in the worms to do all the work. Then its a matter of planting it in 3-4 weeks time. So easy. Also (thanks to you) I have 4 above ground beds and will be adding 8 more. Hubby says thank you haha. I love working smarter, not harder. I live on a quarter acre at the bottom of the world (not quite, on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, under a volcano though) and I have all the fruit trees. I mean, ALL. The neighbours all think its nuts, no front lawn, back end of the property in trees and two beehives. I am an urban homesteader, doing all the self sufficiency I can while working part time and mothering 4, full time. Life is full and life is wonderful. You keep doing what you need to do and keep inspiring us all to dream xx
I bet more of your neighbors admire your efforts than you realize. 😊 🌱🍅🐔🥚🐝🍯 Many people are in awe of those who can and do garden, as well as those keep animals.
So good- thank you so much for the encouragement and “realness” you share! Have had all those feelings...it can be so difficult. Being real with yourself is a learned skill ! Especially in homesteading. Love this, Jess❤️
🌻❤️🌻❤️Love your porch railing. And look at all those beautiful seeds. I am the same I never see things that are right in front of my and tend to get frustrated so I stop pray about it and go back to what I was looking for and most of the time I can find it. 🌻❤️🌻❤️
I have been following since March, I enjoy your videos and learn a lot about gardening. This in my humble opinion has been one of the most heartfelt, insightful and down to earth video.
Seriously laughing out loud. “This is a two person job..” hahaha, not just the geese, but apparently carrying tomatoes 🍅 I’d personally go for the investing in the no till and building the soil.
I'm very curious about the no till method. Also, "turn your waiting room into a classroom" t-shirt idea...garden in the background with a garden stool/chair/stump.
I vote for a no till garden. It would be fun to see what you can build on the clay/rock. Also I’d love to see the process of it all. And Amen to grace for the season of life you’re in! Thank you for your encouraging words!
You really are an inspiration to me. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to be able to garden and provide for my family that way, but just have never been able to make it happen. You’ve really shown me to have grace with myself and just enjoy the whole process and we are now gardening our own food and planning for more growth in the spring!! Thank you for what you’re doing!
Thank you for everything that you share. I feel like we are kindred spirits and I am just currently in my waiting room! Your content and words are so lovely and inspiring, so thank you.
I love the message of doing what’s in your ability because that’s what I’m doing now! I’m only 23 and all I have is a small corner of the backyard to work with but that’s not stopping me from learning! I had so much fun growing tomatoes, jalapeños and cucumbers this year! I even got some Zinnias because I wanted some flowers. I learned so much and I can’t wait for next season!
I found myself rewatching some of your old videos today and it just made me so happy and hopeful to see how far you've come in just a year. I was watching work in your old greenhouse just wishing I could tell you all the big things coming your way, makes me wonder what bigger things are coming now!

Using the chickens to help build the soil sounds like a great idea to me
I'm a big fan of Charles too
Thank you for the Give Yourself Grace pep talk. Older woman, divorced, early retirement due to COVID and am able to do 3 small raised beds right now. I needed to hear it was ok to just let myself do those and not struggle financially or physically to push it for more.
"Comparison is the thief of Joy!"
I'd love to see the process of building a no till garden bed.
If you want to go straight to the source, Charles Dowding (no dig method founder) has a nice TH-cam channel where he explains it all!
Throw seeds on the ground, scratch them into the surface, water them. Also make sure that spot has enough sunlight. That's it~
Im actually subscribed to Charles channel. Jess ASKED which method we'd be more interested in seeing. Thanks.
European Preservation this made me lol
@@arikay8841 oh 😊 I wasn't able to finish the video yesterday so I missed that context. I'm sure Jess will cover it at some point!
No till! Love watching y’all. Thanks for all your knowledge. Can’t wait for your book! ❤️
Thank you! I can give myself Grace to accept where I am at now! 73 and still want to do it all but can be comfortable to do what I can!
You know your wonderful advise in this video relates to a lot of other tasks in our life besides gardening.
IT TAKES TIME TO LEARN EVERYTHING IN GARDENING
Honestly, you can keep preaching thats same message until the cows come home. Because, you always seem to resist it, right when I need a little encouragement. So thank you 😌.
Such intuitive and inspirational words from one so young. I’m 68 and only wish I knew half of what you do before I was 30. Love you and Miah and your wonderful family. Bless you 💞
God bless you all as well. Thanks for the devotional! Needed to hear that so badly and glad I did. Thank you.
I love watching your garden videos... such wise advice from a beautiful young woman.. focus on the stage of your life, learn from your mistakes, turn your waiting room into a classroom... perfect! 😊 After many years of gardening we built raised beds, and I absolutely love them! Truly my happy place.
Turn your waiting room into a classroom! This is my encouragement to grow alot in my balcony till one day I have a chance to grow in a bigger space.
Jess, you’re such an inspiration. You talk from your heart ❤️
I watched one of his videos and just did a no-dig corn bed. Will see how it goes.
This made me spit out my coffee 🤣
“We did it we did it we did it HURRAY!”
I feel the pain. I've been trying to make room for my fall crops because I'm just not ready to get rid of my summer ones! Oh the struggle....
What words of encouragement! I am in that season with three babies 4, 2, and 1. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, friend Jess. You are speaking to me. ❤️ God bless you! 🥰🤓
Great Timing of your perspective on dreams & doing what you can with what you have. Thank you. No Till is my vote.
Your so very inspiring. Love your channel. I’m 74 but I stil so much love gardening and canning . Love your garden, goats and children. 😊❤️
Love watching and learning new thing from you sweety thank you so much . GODBLESS you all
Hehehe! Flip that phone out and ask for a basket! 🥰🥰
Tangent away anytime Jess 😊 . You are a bright shining star 🌟 . You are truly inspiring, and I'm always grateful when you do monologue. 😁
I needed this message so badly today. Thank you, Jess. ❤️
You are wise beyond your years.
Blessings!
That was so good, Jess. Thank you for your tangents!! 😊 But somehow I missed why you don't shell peas. 😂
Did you rewatch to hear her more eloquent version of "ain't no 35yo Jess got time for that!"? 😊
I live the tangents. You speak from your heart to my heart in those moments. 💕
Oooo, tomato! Greatful for the time you spend with us.planted peas today. God bless.
You're advice in this video is spot on.... So much to take from all that you have to say &share! Thank you! I appreciate you outlook for the future and the reminder to not forget to live for the now, be present to be thankful for our own stages in life....as different as they may be. 💚
I learned yesterday that a person receiving food stamps can purchase seeds! That is wonderful! Fascinating.
Thank you for your wisdom of your reality! We all need to learn those lessons!
I have been following since March, I enjoy your videos and learn a lot about gardening. This in my humble opinion has been one of the most heartfelt, insightful and down to earth video.
This is kind of along the lines of "perfection is the enemy of progress." Right? I needed to hear this right now! Thanks so much!
Seriously laughing out loud. “This is a two person job..” hahaha, not just the geese, but apparently carrying tomatoes 🍅
I’d personally go for the investing in the no till and building the soil.
I feel the same way trying to get my new chickens with make 35 total now in our coop at night. Mine are stubborn and my old girls go right on up. 🌻🙏🏻
Pop ppppppppppppppp POP
You hit the nail on the head work with what you have not what you wish you had! As to the till vs no till do half and half and teach like you do!
I'm very curious about the no till method.
Also, "turn your waiting room into a classroom" t-shirt idea...garden in the background with a garden stool/chair/stump.
I got a dusting of snow yesterday. MT is awesome!💕
I agree with everything you said. Just do something instead of doing nothing. Bless you all 💜
Jess, you and Miah are so inspiring, and great teachers! Thank you!
I love you so much I don't care what you are talking about I'm there Blessings!!!
Wise beyond your years♥️
I vote for a no till garden.
I truly enjoy your "tangents" and listen to you talk about gardening.
Thank you for everything that you share. I feel like we are kindred spirits and I am just currently in my waiting room! Your content and words are so lovely and inspiring, so thank you.
But oh so fulfilling - 73 and still growing and share the bounty - even better. Just love the dirt!
Thank you for those words of encouragement, I so want to do everything immediately and become frustrated with myself.
