I was very sad and kinda mad that our WalMart store threw out all of their seeds one day without any notice or any reduced prices or anything and they even said it was a crime to try getting them out of the dumpster. Sad when people needed them and or they could have donated them to the local food pantrys too. Thanks for all the great tips for prepping for the upcoming season. I am a huge note taker so I will be all over this.....
I dumpster dive all the time. 🤷♀️ most cops are not going to bother you unless you're going to every single store & trying to resell or return the items for money/In store credit like some people do...
Resellers are required to dispose of seeds after a certain time. Make friends with your local agricultural supply stores and family run businesses. Sometimes they will donate them to city gardens and such.
With the unusally warm February we've had you can't help but to want to start gardening. I was surveying my garden beds and discovered many weeds starting to grow. Turns out when they're real small they come out easily so that's my gardening for now. It's actually good to go ahead and get these weeds out of the way.
I feel the same way! I live in Southeast Indiana and can't believe the temps/ weather. I heard geese flying north'ish twice this week (they actually looked a bit confused bur that's another story) 😆 It's giving me spring fever!

This time of year I'm getting seaweed from the beach and putting it right on top of the snow, in my gardens and compost. I have great results and I think it really eliminates most deficiencies in the soil.
Yes! I don't have sea weed in SE ohio but I collect all that slimy algae that grows in the pond. That stuff is great! All the nutrients in it is great 👍
I just gave the onion seedlings their first "haircut". They're doing so well in individual cells. It has also been nice enough to walk through the garden and think of ways I'm going to plant differently this year. I've also taken advantage of a few things on sale, like the compressed bags of ProMix and even a new Greenstalk tower. There's so much you can still do this time of year.

When the onion seedlings reach about 4-5 inches, you can cut them back to about 2 inches to encourage more root growth and tidier seedlings to transplant later on. Like you, I use Excel to keep track of the plants I want to plant, when to so them, days to maturity, germination time, etc.. I order seeds a season ahead. I'm a bit further south in central Alabama, zone 7B. My dining room table is covered with seed starting trays, seedlings, grow lights, thermostats, etc.. I am doing a spring plant sale starting April 1st, so I am growing hundreds of additional plants on top of my garden plants. The seeds I started are tomato, pepper, bunching onions, and Creole White Onions. As soon as I have more room, I'll sow seeds for Swiss card, Tokyo Bekana Mustard, Giant Red Mustard, basil and dill. In about three weeks, I'll be direct sowing seeds for carrots, golden beetroot, and radishes.
I also live in midwest Ohio. I have gardened outdoors for years with raised beds but recently I have ordered a 10'x6' greenhouse. I hope to set it up this week. I am starting some seeds indoors to prepare for the season. I look forward to following your channel since it will correlate with my schedule very well. Thank you Jenna.

I'm also in Ohio 6a zone now, formerly from Colorado. Although I've gardened thanks to my Idaho gram since I was 8 yo, now 71 yo! - Yeah, old ladies can garden very well thank you! - I've found your videos a delicious wealth of information - I'm more used to gardening at 7500 ft elev in Black Forest CO!!! There, I still managed to grow sweet corn & 80 lb pumpkins; was once called the "Black Forest Great Pumpkin Lady!" Way back. I've used so much of your great videos & information for starting seeds, I'm now on that seedtime website which I'm thoroughly addicted to now - so Thanks for that recommendation. I put all my seeds in their platform, now following the recommendations of when to start. A GREAT source of seeds I discovered, thanks to my new neighbor who's same age & total garden geek like me, your local library!! I'd never heard of seeds from your LIBRARY!! Wow! But it's great! I've already given them seed I collected from plants to give back. Not sure how many libraries in Ohio do this, but Greenville Public Library does. Also, as I was there, a fellow was looking at NPR website and a NEW drop dead GORGEOUS completely deep purple tomato just developed after 20 years of research. It is GMO, they crossed it for increased anthocyanins in the actual tomato (instead of just the leaves/vines which aren't edible). Which as a Chemist by education, found very intriguing! I managed to snag 10 seeds from the company who developed the seed! I'm going to grow those in my new garden spot I have to develop this spring. Will hopefully be able to post a pic of the results. It's simply called "Purple Tomato", it's NOT an Indigo variety. So Thanks again, look forward to what you post - how do you find the time!!!! In awe!!
Great to hear from you. I protect my row covers in a large (27 gal) black plastic tub with the yellow tops. Inside it I sprinkle in moth balls. Rodents hate the smell. For my lawn equipment including cars, trucks and tractors, I place moth balls in glass salt shakers (dollar store) and place them around the engine compartments (held in place with string). This prevents nesting and also keeps rodents from sharpening their teeth on the copper wiring. BTW, my barn is far more cluttered than yours, so rest easy. Kind Regards. Craig

YES! Onions had a ‘hair cut’ last week and now I’m pulling out tools to sharpen/clean because I don’t want to start seeds again until February. I SO want to start filling planters outside with fresh soil, but it’s frozen. Turning my energy to house plants - Thank you for this video! 😊

This is so timely. I just ordered some of my gardening supplies last night. I ordered my seed in November so I am all set there. I also ordered some tomato and pepper plants online to be delivered in May. I do buy some things started from the local farm market/garden center when it opens in April. I purchased a new raised bed and have put down boards and tarp to prepare the area for it. It is killing me waiting to put it together. Several times I have wanted to get it out of the box and start putting it together in the living room. But then I would have to take it outside and it is snowing like crazy in Northwest Ohio today so I will wait. I keep all of my garden stuff in my garage and unfortunately it does get out of control sometimes. But I am blessed to have 4 little granddaughters who think it is fun to clean grandma's garage. The break down boxes and sweep and organize everything. They are so sweet. When they are done I take them to the park and for ice cream. I think I better enjoy this while they are young. Eventually they will get older and it won't be so much fun. Love your videos Jenna. Now I need to plan out where I am going to plant everything this year. Thanks for the tip on the computer program. our winter was so mild this year the lettuce i planted in october is still going strong and just continues to grow . So i guess i got a real early start on my lettuce haha. Probably take them up when i go to plant my peppers, tomatoes and all that other good stuff.

Great advice Jenna, I am starting annual flowers, perennials and rosemary as they take forever to get going. My goal this season is to not purchase one transplant from a nursery.
Don't forget your sweet potatoes, they can take a while to get started. Peppers also take a long time to get going. It's so interesting the difference between zone chores! Thank you
I too love snow tracking! I’m finding out the deer are loving my flowerbeds and small garden near the house. I hadn’t realized that they liked cilantro. I probably won’t miss it 😂 but, they wiped it out.
Checking the garden after a fresh snow is a great idea. Hopefully we get a couple more snows this winter. I didn't even get things cleaned up in the fall so it looks so bad out there. Also my compost bin was full so I told my husband to just to throw coffee grounds and egg shells directly in the garden. He went a little overboard and now it looks terrible. Yesterday I looked at photos and video of my garden areas during the summer to make me feel better about how awful it looks now.

Started onions in 6b Saturday. Later than I usually do, but it's been a crazy month. This week, Ill get the celery and maybe some flowers started. I would like to replace some of my beds before the soil thaws too much. Some of my wood is so rotten, I think I can pull it off the sides like a mold and just slip a new bed frame right over it! Lol. I only use 3x5 beds in my small backyard, so it could be doable. 😂
I was snow tracking a few weeks ago and didn’t even know it. And our front door camera helps with this too, it showed how several deer had found a way into what we thought was a protected area. One minute pristine newly fallen snow, the next it’s a deer party. I was going to work on our taxes today, but garden planning sounds much more fun.
Last year I started 2 yards of compost and a yard of leaf mold. I just got some Red Mammoth Beet Seeds and am looking forward to growing 20# Beets! Hoping for a Blue Ribbon in the County Fair.
Oh those critters😂. I have to finish poultry wire around bottom of other wire. The bunnies aren’t getting all the lettuce and peas this year😅. We are kind enough to leave them live with the roosters. We locked the roosties in and when we opened the door out marched the 4 soldiers and a rabbit😂. So much information-thank you! Some seeds are so few in a pack that I feel reluctant to test unless they are in soil so I don’t waste them. Me being frugal😅. Hopefully we will get a barn soon as I would hang up all the garden covers. They are in totes and take a lot of room. Irrigation-😂 it was new last year and kept forgetting it was there and snipped a couple spots. I’m not starting seeds too soon this year, again being frugal. I don’t enjoy up potting and it takes too much real estate, money and care. Plan on adding germination days to weeks to start and that should get me to the right stage. Short season Z5a, WI. I keep remembering the late freak frost the last weekend of May last year and it was devastating and knocked everything to the ground including potatoes and killed a grape. I may have to start shading these plants to prevent so much growth as it was Hot last May. Who would have thought we could get a frost? Oh the dilemma of How Many! Always start too many! The people I give them to don’t complain though 😅. Like you and hot peppers 😂. I would like to try a low tunnel for peppers this year because they just start kicking butt and the fall frost gets them. Fall Planting-it’s all hands on deck starting June 1st! Plant, plant, plant and then start sowing fall flats by end of June/beginning July and start planting first week of August. Non stop. August 20th was too late last year for broccoli as I had to do a low tunnel, but I got them to the finish! They don’t do much in less daylight hours. The weather--it’s of great concern as the last two winters have been extremely warm. We always get a January thaw, but not for weeks on end. Last May fruit plants were too advanced to handle the late frost. This winter temps got warmer from Halloween to Christmas and then January had a week of subzero and quickly switched to rain and upper 30s and they think maybe 50 next week with predictions of above average into February. It is for this reason I have not done winter sowing as last year it was crazy warm and poor results. Lucky I saved some seeds of perennials and will plant indoors. I have noticed great results from those WS’g near large bodies of water and of course warmer zones. It’s just so fickle here. I think I will coin it ‘Spring Sow’. I will probably try a couple in late February into March especially vegetables, but not flowers I definitely want as I don’t want to waste seed. The seed knows when to sprout, but they don’t know they are in a mini greenhouse.😊 Cold stratification/cooling hours-Question-I can understand plants knowing how many hours they need of cooling, but how does a seed know? Or is the cold part of the seed hull breakdown? Just curious because I have seeds I just put in fridge as I know the temp will remain cold unlike outside and figure a quick cold blast should do. I would like to start some flowers that I usually direct sow as it takes so long and then the frost comes. Thank you for your time and Info! Always appreciated!!
lol, it might be a little early, but just yesterday I pruned the blueberry bushes and cherry and hazelnut trees. I also started building an additional composting bin to get more capacity. Hey, it wasn't raining or snowing, so I figured why waste a Saturday morning?
Rinne trap for mice works great. It's a lid you put over a 5 gallon bucket. You put peanut butter inside they have a little ramp, and they go up it and fall into bucket. No nasty trap.
I could hardly believe the cost of sweet corn seed when I went out looking to see what was available. This year I’m writing on my calendar when I need to seed my brassicas for a fall garden. My one year old granddaughter loves broccoli so I want to be sure I have plenty. My adult son and husband are working on getting my raised beds moved to sunnier spots and filling them up for me. I’ve got my winter sowing mostly done. I need to set up my indoor seed starting area. This is my first year at this place so nothing is set up. I need to find where I can get seed potatoes. So much to do and not enough time or energy to do it all.
I had a problem with birds eating my seeds last year and I went to Walmart before Memorial Day and they had already gotten rid of all their seeds!! They didn’t sell out, they got rid of them. Lesson learned!
You made me actually laugh out loud several times! If I was you I think that I would make the switch to the larger perennial bed area a priority. It would take a little off of your plate. My onions are doing well. I've not started anything else yet. I probably should have started some celery. Hmm. Anyway. You always impress me with how intense you are with your gardening. I used to do the garden planner stuff. These days I just do a quick drawing and label where I put what this year. Today was 50° here in Indiana. We moved in July and didn’t have a garden. So this year I’m soooo excited to have a good one. We painted our area out and plan to till next month. I’m so ready. Seed catalogs are worn out
p.s. my garage looks just like your garage/barn area and I did actually finally clean up mine a bit last week haha! - This is my first year taking gardening seriously. My grandmother and I use to all the time and it is something I really miss doing and want to teach good habits to my children now. I have a ton of space in my garage as I keep my car, outside. And as I was cleaning it up, I found a bin, so think I am going to try composting because I have been wanting to for years now and gardening. So wish me luck! Hopefully something sticks!

Tried to grow from seed inside my green house for the first time in December in New York. It took forever to grow lettuce and spinach. I put some Christmas lights inside to give it a degree warmer but still very cold. I may try to seed inside first then bring them out or seed them in October. Thanks for all you have shared.
Love the sparkly nails in the germination test segment. I just measured my veggie patch today to have a better guide for what space I will be working with. I'm almost looking forward to winter now as I have a couple of trees I want to move and doing so will provide a new space to shuffle some other gardening space around (likely a raised bed just for strawberries).
You should see all the cardboard I have stashed around the house! (I don’t have a shed) My seed starting racks are filled with overwintered peppers, eggplant and lemongrass. I did make room for onion starts and they’re doing well so far. I’m winter sowing peas and a few other things. Trying a new way… I have garlic all over my beds so I’m not sure I’ll have room when I need it. I’m trying to sprout slips for sweet potatoes and I already ordered seed potatoes to arrive in the spring. My projects are putting up a new raised bed and converting some grassy areas into cedar walkways. I also need to adjust two of my raised bed sizes. That’s the project I’m not looking forward to!
I noticed you got a jug of Agro Thrive. I just started using the general purpose Agro Thrive for my brassicas, herbs and flowers I started at the beginning of January. So far I am really liking it. My seedlings are thriving and although it smells when you open the bottle, I don’t notice a smell in my grow room .
One big new thing for me is that I now have an unheated greenhouse, so I'm going to need to figure out how that changes things as far as seeding this year. I'm still going to do my usual start times, with the exception of the brassicas which I'm going to do some earlier and later with a beginning of February, middle of February, and end of February with some in between to see if I can have a bunch of succession plants throughout the spring season.
I am very lucky, i have a store that carrys seeds year round. I buy the bulk of it first of the year online, but still buy quite a bit throughout the year at that store.
I have my onions growing and started a new type of oregano that hopefully tastes more like oregano than the stuff I've been growing. And I actually started chitting my potatoes back in Dec since the ones I saved for seed were beginning to sprout. I'm glad I watched your video today because when you mentioned spinach seeds not lasting long I couldn't remember ordering any. Sure enough when I checked I did not so I'll probably just try picking some up at the store rather than paying shipping again. I'm afraid mid-February into March is going to get cold and snowy this year and slow down our activity in the garden. Maybe I'm wrong we'll see.

Always informative... 👍 My tasks this time of year are simple since I have a small garden area. The main thing is to get certain seeds started, so onions (Candy) and carrots (crunch-a-bunch on your suggestion) are under the lights as I write this. I've also started Romaine lettuce in a medium size oblong pot and that will likely stay under the lights until it matures. As mentioned my garden is small, so I also have an abundance of potted veggies on the back patio, so it's coming time to empty the pots and clean up the patio in general. Taking inventory of supplies/needs is a wonderful idea and I'm glad you brought it up!! I'm notorious for waiting and then scrambling at the last minute. This coming week it's suppose to warmup a little (for late January) so will take up the irrigation lines and rake out some of the weeds and such from the garden and get an area ready for early spring plantings. I'm also going to look at starting some perennials from seed under the lights in Mid-Feb to get a jump on them. Jenna, you inspire so many people with your videos, it always amazes me how you come up with new content when it seems you've covered everything from A to Z... and yet here we are again with another timely and informative vid... I started my onions a couple of weeks ago, and they're doing great. Also, I'm trying winter sowing for the first time 🤞 Planted some lettuce that like the cold (Winter density and Arctic King) plus Parris Island and Tatsoi. I also went ahead and started some Grand Rapids and Salad Bowl leaf lettuces. I plan to put them in my cold frame (after I put it together!) Got lots of ideas, but limited space 😉

Wow, how big is your garden?!😮 I'm in mid eastern Ohio. A few days ago, my son and I cleaned up in front of our canning Pantry in the basement to pull out the indoor greenhouse, heating mats, grow lights and plug strip. Took it upstairs into the dining room to set everything up. I usually set up 2 of them but this year we have our veggies we grew last year on the racks of the other greenhouse. I will be starting seeds this week or next week. Speaking of my garden supply area which is inside my outdoor greenhouse that I built from 2x4s, 4x4s, lattice, pallets and plastic sheeting. It is a mess from last year! It definitely needs cleaned. One of my windows needs repaired because the glass fell out of it, My roof needs repaired because we have a walnut tree directly behind The greenhouse and decided to drop walnuts on my clear corrugated sheets and make huge holes in it. It's sort of my organized chaos! 😅😂😅😂 Haven't started outside yet to prep the beds, cover the ground or remove any dead plants from last year. Our garden is 60 ft by 30 ft. We also have four old vintage soapstone sinks that I use for plants. I figured out a way to repurpose them instead of them ending up in the landfill. They are sort of another way to make a raised bed. Most of them I have gotten for free and just spent the gas and the back breaking work to go pick them up. 😅

Darned if I didn’t find some new tomatoes to try. 🥴 Also getting ready to expand the garden, and transplant some Black Jewel raspberries. If ya wind up with too many hot peppers, like jalapeños, smoking them with fruit wood and sweet pickling them is pretty tasty. Great on pizza, scrambled eggs, or making a cream cheese dip.

I am trying Spoon, White Currant, and Queen of the Night tomatoes. I’m still doing the Amish Paste, San Marzano, and Kellogg’s Breakfast. I think you’ll like sweet pickling some of the peppers.
Just finished watching the rest of our video from the other day. Question. Can you trim everbearing raspberry canes and propagate them in the soil? I was going to try it inside this winter with a couple canes. I enjoy checking for foot prints and droppings in the snow, the other day saw the remanence of sparrow feathers from a hawks breakfast. Usually we have a ton of snow this time of year, so I can't even get to my garden without stepping though a ton of snow. This year, it's way to warm, the ground is muddy, and I'm just going through my seeds. I know we're going to get another freeze as MN weather changes so much, and I'm not risking planting to loose my seedlings.

I'm going to try growing an edible Hibiscus, also called Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) as my experimental plant this year! I try growing one weird variety every year and this is it. I'm in zone 7B so we'll see!
I cut back the long canes on a blackberry bush last fall, dipped the cuttings in root hormone powder, then stuck them deeply into a spare raised bed and watered them in. Inspected them on 9 Feb. '24, an unseasonably warm day for SE MI, zone 6. It was hard to tell if this year's side sprouts were just dormant and viable, or completely not viable, on both the parent plant and the cuttings. Have you ever treated cuttings this way in the fall, and has it worked well for rooting purposes? Thanks!
Seeds are all sorted for indoor seed starting and winter sowing, and my onions tray is started. Next peppers and kale. I'm feeling pretty on top of things and yet I am still behind...lol. No grow light station ready yet.
In the spring all my garden Beds are FILLED with rabbit poop 😂 it’s like they use them specifically as a litter box in the winter even even with snow it’s crazy

Just another reminder that gardening does not stop when the snow flies! Question: Where did you get your soil sample probe or have one you can recommend? Some out there are cheap and others are hundreds of dollars. Thanks so much for all your advice..
Exactly! My soil probe was a hand-me-down, but from what I can tell is similar to something like this: amzn.to/3Siouov I can't really see any reason that the super expensive versions would be needed for this application. You can also just obtain a sample using a hand trowel or shovel if you're careful.
I have nurtured an old tree stump, cut near ground level, with about 10 years of applying layers of rotted garden materials. It has completed rotted down now and soil is present that mixed in as the roots collapsed. It looks plantable this year (2 ft diameter) and I wonder if you or one of your readers has a suggestion for what would grow well in my attempt at a Zone 6-7 mini-hugelkultur.

With the unusally warm February we've had you can't help but to want to start gardening. I was surveying my garden beds and discovered many weeds starting to grow. Turns out when they're real small they come out easily so that's my gardening for now. It's actually good to go ahead and get these weeds out of the way.
I feel the same way! I live in Southeast Indiana and can't believe the temps/ weather. I heard geese flying north'ish twice this week (they actually looked a bit confused bur that's another story) 😆

This time of year I'm getting seaweed from the beach and putting it right on top of the snow, in my gardens and compost. I have great results and I think it really eliminates most deficiencies in the soil.
Does residual salt have an impact on the soil?

Yes! I don't have sea weed in SE ohio but I collect all that slimy algae that grows in the pond. That stuff is great! All the nutrients in it is great 👍
I just gave the onion seedlings their first "haircut". They're doing so well in individual cells. It has also been nice enough to walk through the garden and think of ways I'm going to plant differently this year. I've also taken advantage of a few things on sale, like the compressed bags of ProMix and even a new Greenstalk tower. There's so much you can still do this time of year.
What do you mean haircut? Like to eat or do you actually need to cut down your seedlings?
@@emilydurkin4217 I actually learned about this from this channel. When the onion seedlings reach about 4-5 inches, you can cut them back to about 2 inches to encourage more root growth and tidier seedlings to transplant later on. As it so happens, you can use what you cut as you would chives. They were tasty in a turkey wrap!

Like you, I use Excel to keep track of the plants I want to plant, when to so them, days to maturity, germination time, etc.. I order seeds a season ahead. I'm a bit further south in central Alabama, zone 7B. My dining room table is covered with seed starting trays, seedlings, grow lights, thermostats, etc.. I am doing a spring plant sale starting April 1st, so I am growing hundreds of additional plants on top of my garden plants. The seeds I started are tomato, pepper, bunching onions, and Creole White Onions. As soon as I have more room, I'll sow seeds for Swiss card, Tokyo Bekana Mustard, Giant Red Mustard, basil and dill. In about three weeks, I'll be direct sowing seeds for carrots, golden beetroot, and radishes.
I also live in midwest Ohio. I have gardened outdoors for years with raised beds but recently I have ordered a 10'x6' greenhouse. I hope to set it up this week. I am starting some seeds indoors to prepare for the season. I look forward to following your channel since it will correlate with my schedule very well. Thank you Jenna.

I'm also in Ohio 6a zone now, formerly from Colorado. Although I've gardened thanks to my Idaho gram since I was 8 yo, now 71 yo! - Yeah, old ladies can garden very well thank you! - I've found your videos a delicious wealth of information - I'm more used to gardening at 7500 ft elev in Black Forest CO!!! There, I still managed to grow sweet corn & 80 lb pumpkins; was once called the "Black Forest Great Pumpkin Lady!" Way back. I've used so much of your great videos & information for starting seeds, I'm now on that seedtime website which I'm thoroughly addicted to now - so Thanks for that recommendation. I put all my seeds in their platform, now following the recommendations of when to start. A GREAT source of seeds I discovered, thanks to my new neighbor who's same age & total garden geek like me, your local library!! I'd never heard of seeds from your LIBRARY!! Wow! But it's great! I've already given them seed I collected from plants to give back. Not sure how many libraries in Ohio do this, but Greenville Public Library does. Also, as I was there, a fellow was looking at NPR website and a NEW drop dead GORGEOUS completely deep purple tomato just developed after 20 years of research. It is GMO, they crossed it for increased anthocyanins in the actual tomato (instead of just the leaves/vines which aren't edible). Which as a Chemist by education, found very intriguing! I managed to snag 10 seeds from the company who developed the seed! I'm going to grow those in my new garden spot I have to develop this spring. Will hopefully be able to post a pic of the results. It's simply called "Purple Tomato", it's NOT an Indigo variety. So Thanks again, look forward to what you post - how do you find the time!!!! In awe!!

Great to hear from you. I protect my row covers in a large (27 gal) black plastic tub with the yellow tops. Inside it I sprinkle in moth balls. Rodents hate the smell. For my lawn equipment including cars, trucks and tractors, I place moth balls in glass salt shakers (dollar store) and place them around the engine compartments (held in place with string). This prevents nesting and also keeps rodents from sharpening their teeth on the copper wiring. BTW, my barn is far more cluttered than yours, so rest easy. Kind Regards. Craig

YES! Onions had a ‘hair cut’ last week and now I’m pulling out tools to sharpen/clean because I don’t want to start seeds again until February. I SO want to start filling planters outside with fresh soil, but it’s frozen. Turning my energy to house plants - Thank you for this video! 😊

This is so timely. I just ordered some of my gardening supplies last night. I ordered my seed in November so I am all set there. I also ordered some tomato and pepper plants online to be delivered in May. I do buy some things started from the local farm market/garden center when it opens in April. I purchased a new raised bed and have put down boards and tarp to prepare the area for it. It is killing me waiting to put it together. Several times I have wanted to get it out of the box and start putting it together in the living room. But then I would have to take it outside and it is snowing like crazy in Northwest Ohio today so I will wait. I keep all of my garden stuff in my garage and unfortunately it does get out of control sometimes. But I am blessed to have 4 little granddaughters who think it is fun to clean grandma's garage. The break down boxes and sweep and organize everything. They are so sweet. When they are done I take them to the park and for ice cream. I think I better enjoy this while they are young. Eventually they will get older and it won't be so much fun. Love your videos Jenna. Now I need to plan out where I am going to plant everything this year. Thanks for the tip on the computer program. our winter was so mild this year the lettuce i planted in october is still going strong and just continues to grow . So i guess i got a real early start on my lettuce haha. Probably take them up when i go to plant my peppers, tomatoes and all that other good stuff.

I’m finding out the deer are loving my flowerbeds and small garden near the house. I hadn’t realized that they liked cilantro. I probably won’t miss it 😂 but, they wiped it out.

Checking the garden after a fresh snow is a great idea. Hopefully we get a couple more snows this winter. I didn't even get things cleaned up in the fall so it looks so bad out there. Also my compost bin was full so I told my husband to just to throw coffee grounds and egg shells directly in the garden. He went a little overboard and now it looks terrible. Yesterday I looked at photos and video of my garden areas during the summer to make me feel better about how awful it looks now.
Winter sowing never let's me down as a newer gardener😅.

I start with my local library for seeds March - November I can get 10 varieties a month from them as part of their seed sharing program.

Started onions in 6b Saturday. Later than I usually do, but it's been a crazy month. This week, Ill get the celery and maybe some flowers started. I would like to replace some of my beds before the soil thaws too much. Some of my wood is so rotten, I think I can pull it off the sides like a mold and just slip a new bed frame right over it! Lol. I only use 3x5 beds in my small backyard, so it could be doable. 😂

I was snow tracking a few weeks ago and didn’t even know it. And our front door camera helps with this too, it showed how several deer had found a way into what we thought was a protected area. One minute pristine newly fallen snow, the next it’s a deer party. I was going to work on our taxes today, but garden planning sounds much more fun.

Last year I started 2 yards of compost and a yard of leaf mold. I just got some Red Mammoth Beet Seeds and am looking forward to growing 20# Beets! Hoping for a Blue Ribbon in the County Fair.
Oh those critters😂. I have to finish poultry wire around bottom of other wire. The bunnies aren’t getting all the lettuce and peas this year😅. We are kind enough to leave them live with the roosters. We locked the roosties in and when we opened the door out marched the 4 soldiers and a rabbit😂.

Some seeds are so few in a pack that I feel reluctant to test unless they are in soil so I don’t waste them. Me being frugal😅.
Hopefully we will get a barn soon as I would hang up all the garden covers. They are in totes and take a lot of room.
Irrigation-😂 it was new last year and kept forgetting it was there and snipped a couple spots.
I’m not starting seeds too soon this year, again being frugal. I don’t enjoy up potting and it takes too much real estate, money and care. Plan on adding germination days to weeks to start and that should get me to the right stage. Short season Z5a, WI. I keep remembering the late freak frost the last weekend of May last year and it was devastating and knocked everything to the ground including potatoes and killed a grape. I may have to start shading these plants to prevent so much growth as it was Hot last May. Who would have thought we could get a frost?
Oh the dilemma of How Many! Always start too many! The people I give them to don’t complain though 😅. Like you and hot peppers 😂. I would like to try a low tunnel for peppers this year because they just start kicking butt and the fall frost gets them.
Fall Planting-it’s all hands on deck starting June 1st! Plant, plant, plant and then start sowing fall flats by end of June/beginning July and start planting first week of August. Non stop. August 20th was too late last year for broccoli as I had to do a low tunnel, but I got them to the finish! They don’t do much in less daylight hours.
The weather--it’s of great concern as the last two winters have been extremely warm. We always get a January thaw, but not for weeks on end. Last May fruit plants were too advanced to handle the late frost. This winter temps got warmer from Halloween to Christmas and then January had a week of subzero and quickly switched to rain and upper 30s and they think maybe 50 next week with predictions of above average into February. It is for this reason I have not done winter sowing as last year it was crazy warm and poor results. Lucky I saved some seeds of perennials and will plant indoors. I have noticed great results from those WS’g near large bodies of water and of course warmer zones. It’s just so fickle here. I think I will coin it ‘Spring Sow’. I will probably try a couple in late February into March especially vegetables, but not flowers I definitely want as I don’t want to waste seed. The seed knows when to sprout, but they don’t know they are in a mini greenhouse.😊
Cold stratification/cooling hours-Question-I can understand plants knowing how many hours they need of cooling, but how does a seed know? Or is the cold part of the seed hull breakdown? Just curious because I have seeds I just put in fridge as I know the temp will remain cold unlike outside and figure a quick cold blast should do.
I would like to start some flowers that I usually direct sow as it takes so long and then the frost comes.

This week I have to trim my asparagus and remove a few fall brassicas that are finished. And getting beds ready for my mid February plantings.
lol, it might be a little early, but just yesterday I pruned the blueberry bushes and cherry and hazelnut trees. I also started building an additional composting bin to get more capacity. Hey, it wasn't raining or snowing, so I figured why waste a Saturday morning?
I pruned elderberry and blueberry and took hardwood cuttings of them to start in the house. 👍👍
I have been getting my stuff together to build a compost bin going to use it as a hot bed for seedlings. Hope! 😊

Rinne trap for mice works great. It's a lid you put over a 5 gallon bucket. You put peanut butter inside they have a little ramp, and they go up it and fall into bucket. No nasty trap.

I could hardly believe the cost of sweet corn seed when I went out looking to see what was available.
This year I’m writing on my calendar when I need to seed my brassicas for a fall garden. My one year old granddaughter loves broccoli so I want to be sure I have plenty.
My adult son and husband are working on getting my raised beds moved to sunnier spots and filling them up for me.
I’ve got my winter sowing mostly done. I need to set up my indoor seed starting area. This is my first year at this place so nothing is set up. I need to find where I can get seed potatoes. So much to do and not enough time or energy to do it all.

I had a problem with birds eating my seeds last year and I went to Walmart before Memorial Day and they had already gotten rid of all their seeds!! They didn’t sell out, they got rid of them. Lesson learned!

Today was 50° here in Indiana. We moved in July and didn’t have a garden. So this year I’m soooo excited to have a good one. We painted our area out and plan to till next month. I’m so ready. Seed catalogs are worn out
p.s. my garage looks just like your garage/barn area and I did actually finally clean up mine a bit last week haha! - This is my first year taking gardening seriously. My grandmother and I use to all the time and it is something I really miss doing and want to teach good habits to my children now. I have a ton of space in my garage as I keep my car, outside. And as I was cleaning it up, I found a bin, so think I am going to try composting because I have been wanting to for years now and gardening. So wish me luck! Hopefully something sticks!

Tried to grow from seed inside my green house for the first time in December in New York. It took forever to grow lettuce and spinach. I put some Christmas lights inside to give it a degree warmer but still very cold. I may try to seed inside first then bring them out or seed them in October. Thanks for all you have shared.
Love the sparkly nails in the germination test segment. I just measured my veggie patch today to have a better guide for what space I will be working with. I'm almost looking forward to winter now as I have a couple of trees I want to move and doing so will provide a new space to shuffle some other gardening space around (likely a raised bed just for strawberries).

You should see all the cardboard I have stashed around the house! (I don’t have a shed) My seed starting racks are filled with overwintered peppers, eggplant and lemongrass. I did make room for onion starts and they’re doing well so far. I’m winter sowing peas and a few other things. Trying a new way…
I have garlic all over my beds so I’m not sure I’ll have room when I need it. I’m trying to sprout slips for sweet potatoes and I already ordered seed potatoes to arrive in the spring.
My projects are putting up a new raised bed and converting some grassy areas into cedar walkways. I also need to adjust two of my raised bed sizes. That’s the project I’m not looking forward to!

I noticed you got a jug of Agro Thrive. I just started using the general purpose Agro Thrive for my brassicas, herbs and flowers I started at the beginning of January. So far I am really liking it. My seedlings are thriving and although it smells when you open the bottle, I don’t notice a smell in my grow room .
I'm glad to hear you liked it. I've used it in the garden, but this will be the first time I'm testing it on my seedlings.
One big new thing for me is that I now have an unheated greenhouse, so I'm going to need to figure out how that changes things as far as seeding this year. I'm still going to do my usual start times, with the exception of the brassicas which I'm going to do some earlier and later with a beginning of February, middle of February, and end of February with some in between to see if I can have a bunch of succession plants throughout the spring season.

I have my onions growing and started a new type of oregano that hopefully tastes more like oregano than the stuff I've been growing. And I actually started chitting my potatoes back in Dec since the ones I saved for seed were beginning to sprout. I'm glad I watched your video today because when you mentioned spinach seeds not lasting long I couldn't remember ordering any. Sure enough when I checked I did not so I'll probably just try picking some up at the store rather than paying shipping again.
I'm afraid mid-February into March is going to get cold and snowy this year and slow down our activity in the garden. Maybe I'm wrong we'll see.

Always informative... 👍 My tasks this time of year are simple since I have a small garden area. The main thing is to get certain seeds started, so onions (Candy) and carrots (crunch-a-bunch on your suggestion) are under the lights as I write this. I've also started Romaine lettuce in a medium size oblong pot and that will likely stay under the lights until it matures. As mentioned my garden is small, so I also have an abundance of potted veggies on the back patio, so it's coming time to empty the pots and clean up the patio in general. Taking inventory of supplies/needs is a wonderful idea and I'm glad you brought it up!! I'm notorious for waiting and then scrambling at the last minute. This coming week it's suppose to warmup a little (for late January) so will take up the irrigation lines and rake out some of the weeds and such from the garden and get an area ready for early spring plantings. I'm also going to look at starting some perennials from seed under the lights in Mid-Feb to get a jump on them.

I started my onions a couple of weeks ago, and they're doing great. Also, I'm trying winter sowing for the first time 🤞 Planted some lettuce that like the cold (Winter density and Arctic King) plus Parris Island and Tatsoi. I also went ahead and started some Grand Rapids and Salad Bowl leaf lettuces. I plan to put them in my cold frame (after I put it together!) Got lots of ideas, but limited space 😉

I'm in mid eastern Ohio. A few days ago, my son and I cleaned up in front of our canning Pantry in the basement to pull out the indoor greenhouse, heating mats, grow lights and plug strip. Took it upstairs into the dining room to set everything up. I usually set up 2 of them but this year we have our veggies we grew last year on the racks of the other greenhouse. I will be starting seeds this week or next week. Speaking of my garden supply area which is inside my outdoor greenhouse that I built from 2x4s, 4x4s, lattice, pallets and plastic sheeting. It is a mess from last year! It definitely needs cleaned. One of my windows needs repaired because the glass fell out of it, My roof needs repaired because we have a walnut tree directly behind The greenhouse and decided to drop walnuts on my clear corrugated sheets and make huge holes in it. It's sort of my organized chaos! 😅😂😅😂
Haven't started outside yet to prep the beds, cover the ground or remove any dead plants from last year. Our garden is 60 ft by 30 ft. We also have four old vintage soapstone sinks that I use for plants. I figured out a way to repurpose them instead of them ending up in the landfill. They are sort of another way to make a raised bed. Most of them I have gotten for free and just spent the gas and the back breaking work to go pick them up. 😅

Currently, I’m waiting on some new seeds from Baker Creek. Darned if I didn’t find some new tomatoes to try. 🥴 Also getting ready to expand the garden, and transplant some Black Jewel raspberries.
If ya wind up with too many hot peppers, like jalapeños, smoking them with fruit wood and sweet pickling them is pretty tasty. Great on pizza, scrambled eggs, or making a cream cheese dip.
Ooh- We've smoked and pickled our peppers, which I love... but never tried sweet picking them. That sounds amazing! Which tomatoes are you trying (I don't think you told me already, did you)?
I am trying Spoon, White Currant, and Queen of the Night tomatoes. I’m still doing the Amish Paste, San Marzano, and Kellogg’s Breakfast.

Just finished watching the rest of our video from the other day. Question. Can you trim everbearing raspberry canes and propagate them in the soil? I was going to try it inside this winter with a couple canes.
I enjoy checking for foot prints and droppings in the snow, the other day saw the remanence of sparrow feathers from a hawks breakfast.
Your barn looked like my basement a week ago, I did finally organize and clean it.

I believe you can, yes. I know they root readily when the canes bend over & touch the soil, so I can't see any reason you couldn't root cuttings.

Usually we have a ton of snow this time of year, so I can't even get to my garden without stepping though a ton of snow. This year, it's way to warm, the ground is muddy, and I'm just going through my seeds. I know we're going to get another freeze as MN weather changes so much, and I'm not risking planting to loose my seedlings.
I've never tried using seeds from the previous year, I always just through them out and bought new ones. I've been gardening for many years and you've just opened my eyes to germination testing. I love your channel!

Can you point me to where I can get that soil sampling gadget? Looking forward to spring. I'm going to try growing an edible Hibiscus, also called Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) as my experimental plant this year! I try growing one weird variety every year and this is it. I'm in zone 7B so we'll see!

I cut back the long canes on a blackberry bush last fall, dipped the cuttings in root hormone powder, then stuck them deeply into a spare raised bed and watered them in. Inspected them on 9 Feb. '24, an unseasonably warm day for SE MI, zone 6. It was hard to tell if this year's side sprouts were just dormant and viable, or completely not viable, on both the parent plant and the cuttings. Have you ever treated cuttings this way in the fall, and has it worked well for rooting purposes? Thanks!
I've not treated cuttings this way- but it seems to me that, in theory, it should work. I'd love to hear an update about how they do!
Seeds are all sorted for indoor seed starting and winter sowing, and my onions tray is started. Next peppers and kale. I'm feeling pretty on top of things and yet I am still behind...lol. No grow light station ready yet.

In the spring all my garden Beds are FILLED with rabbit poop 😂 it’s like they use them specifically as a litter box in the winter even even with snow it’s crazy
My sons dog does that. 😑

Just another reminder that gardening does not stop when the snow flies! Question: Where did you get your soil sample probe or have one you can recommend? Some out there are cheap and others are hundreds of dollars. Thanks so much for all your advice..

My soil probe was a hand-me-down, but from what I can tell is similar to something like this: amzn.to/3Siouov I can't really see any reason that the super expensive versions would be needed for this application. You can also just obtain a sample using a hand trowel or shovel if you're careful.

I have nurtured an old tree stump, cut near ground level, with about 10 years of applying layers of rotted garden materials. It has completed rotted down now and soil is present that mixed in as the roots collapsed. It looks plantable this year (2 ft diameter) and I wonder if you or one of your readers has a suggestion for what would grow well in my attempt at a Zone 6-7 mini-hugelkultur.
