I'm about to start Spring planting here in QLD Australia. Our temperature for Winter only goes down to about 6 degrees Celsius at night, but can have still be up to 20+ degrees Celsius through the day.
When you talked about bringing a pen down to label things, I remembered a tip I saw that I think is genius. Perhaps you may find it helpful. Put a mailbox in your garden (or perhaps in that area) with small supplies that you often need there so you don't have to go back up to the garden shed for things. Ex: labels, pen, nippers, string, garden tape...le hori-hori, etc. My yard isn't big enough to need this yet, but once I have a big enough piece of land I'm all about it!
Same here. I have 2 peppers in a tray I never separated or put in the ground. I literally have a pepper growing on a pair of seedlings I did not want to throw out. 😂😂😂
Oh how I needed to hear that encouragement. I'm a first time gardener who lost almost all my garden (and roof) from a recent storm in Iowa. I needed to hear this. Gardening is a life long lesson that I've only just begun. We are optimists, we are life long learners, and hopeful day dreamers. Thanks Jess!

Your summer garden is finishing and here in New Zealand we are finishing winter and just coming into spring. So cant wait for our grow season to take off
I started my tomato seeds 31 Jul, indoors along with other vegies. Yesterday morning I finally put my tomatoes out in to the garden. All looking good, and so glad I started them off early. I still have plenty of time if something happens to them. Now I need to search out spots to plant all the vegetables (small backyard). Will have to find spots that are not normally a veggie garden bed. By the way, I'm here in South Australia.
It is so nice to hear you talk about the sadness that is felt when the garden is dying because I am totally feeling that right now. I honestly feel better knowing that I am not alone in feeling this way. I am by no means a first time gardener, however, this is my first year growing on this property, in a new state, and a new zone. I am originally from NW PA where the growing season is short, but beautiful and amazing. We have been living in VA now for 4 years and just bought our first home with 2 acres last summer. We had been living in an apartment for 3 years where I could only grow in pots on my patio, so when we finally found this house and property I was mostly excited that I could finally have a garden again! We are right on the cusp on zones 7a/7b as well. And even though I am not a first time gardener, I’m a little rusty to having a full on in ground garden and also, a completely different area....I am thrilled to have an extended growing season and have learned so much this year. This is actually how I found your channel this past winter when I was planning the garden to come this year. Because of you, I have grown things I’ve never grown before and I have learned so much, I have planted a second wave of summer crops and have my fall garden started indoors. These are both firsts for me that I first learned from you! I go out to the garden everyday and this week in particular I keep coming inside and telling my husband that the garden is a sad place right now and he gives me chocolate to cheer me up. I’ve battled pests that I have never battled before and plants have been eaten and things are dying. We have had a ton of rain and so many cracked tomatoes. We are planning on putting in raised beds next year to hopefully battle that? This is literally the worst tomato year I think I have ever had. And the squash bugs were absolutely insane this year. We also have had a large family of locusts living in our garden. -anyway, that all adds up to so many lessons learned this year. Thank you for doing all that you do! You and your family are such a blessing for so many. P. S. I am super stoked about your book and I am 100% cheering you on!
If you put the overgrown squash and zucchini in a food processor they basically dissolve into a pasta sauce or soup. I freeze them flat in bags like you do. After the aromatics, I brown the squash puree a little in the oil/fat before I add tomatoes etc.
The delight on your face is the same exact feeling I get when I find my lost Hori Hori knife a million times per season. It's my favorite tool 💚 and I'm always losing it! PS. I know how you love writing and are a wordsmith. I love your writing so with love, it's devastating not devestating 🥰

I smiled when you said you were planting more basil. Its so funny how as a gardener you can feel overwhelmed with a specific plant one minute then turn around and think i should plant more. I totally do the same thing.

I started my very first garden this year and I’ve learned a lot. The tomatoes plants I grew from seed and they did well. They became my babies and having to think about the end of their lives, my heart broke a little bit. Thank you for posting your videos. I’ve learned a lot.
Seasons of life are like the garden. Our 20’s,30’s,40’s are like spring and summer. Lush and bountiful and productive! I’m in my early 60’s, productive, but not nearly as beautiful and lush as summer 🤗
This is just what I needed to hear this morning. The time I have left is even shorter here in Chicago and my butternut squash and melon plants just refused to produce this year. But I've already got some radishes, arugula and broccoli rabe sprouting, some peppers and my tomatoes are still producing so there's consolation in continuity!
I, too, live in the Chicago area, a SW suburb, and some of my tomatoes did well and others, not so well! Part of that is my fault as both my grapevine and Wisteria plants took off like crazy this year obscuring part of my garden from the sun!! That being said the weather's been weird!
Hugs! I'm over here by grand rapids mi and I had one mini melon the size of a baseball it fell off the vine as the vine died last week. The 3 or 4 mouthfuls for hubs and i were tasty there is also next year(thats my montra) in another bed is the same melon with 3 golf ball melons. Im hoping for a long fall. Its been another weird season. But know that you are not alone I grew honeynut squash this year and out of 4 vines I have 9 set and hoping they ripen before any frost hits..
We invest so much of us in our gardens that we can't help but feel affected by the end of summer but this year I'm feeling hopeful because for the first time, I'll have a few crops growing into winter and I'm already planning for next year. Thank you for your time, knowledge and humour.
I pulled my garden last weekend to make room for the fall garden. It really is bitter sweet. Now I have visions of the fall garden in my head trying to map it out.
Jess, I just have to tell you. Thanks to you for teaching me how to grow tomatoes last year and this year. I am finally getting ripe tomatoes! Last year I got enough to can my own tomato sauces. I only had about 40 plants last year. But with the adage of you can't eat the leaves. I did the pruning thing last year and my living on the southern Oregon coast. Where it doesn't get hot during the day. An forget about it being warm at night. So I always had huge lush tomato plants and tomatoes that never ripened. Till you. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You also inspired me early this year to start all my own tomato plants and all my other garden plants. I also got my greenhouse done in april. So I increased the amount, planting 130 tomato plants this year. And a couple of days ago. I went out and picked a big basket full of beautiful tomatoes. Of all kinds and sizes. And I brought them in to my farmhouse kitchen. I looked around for a place to set them down. And I had baskets of tomatoes sitting everywhere. I said out loud to myself. Oh my GOD! My kitchen looks like Jess's kitchen with all her tomatoes everywhere! And if it wasn't for your ideas, this 60 year old would still be growing big lush plants with hardly any ripe ones ever! Saturday is going to be tomato processing day. Pulled 8 gallon bags of tomatoes out of my freezer too. Next year I will be growing even more. I'm hooked! I planted 17 of my tomato plants in my greenhouse. And all my pepper plants too. They are doing really great. All the rest of the tomato plants are being grown outside. And the outside ones are actually ripening faster. I'm even getting alot of ground cherries. That I started from seed because of how much you all loved them. I love them too. Going to save up a bunch and make jam. Also have 5 Kari melons ripening away out in the garden. Again, thank you so much for all your wisdom and ideas. Garden on everyone!

Your channel has been such a joy to watch this year and a true inspiration. I got myself three cattle panel trellises back in March for our Baltimore city back yard garden and the last month or so has been cucumbers galore and volunteer mystery squash as always. Last year we got a couple butternuts, this year it looks like acorn. 💚7b💚
Hey Jess, we all r saying that in the past few days... a hint of fall feeling! I just noticed what Jerimiah used 4 rails on yr new support around stairs. Great inexpensive idea painting them.
You would be proid of me Jess. I managed to save seeds from everything I grew plus some of my neighbors garden efforts. My garden was new because we just moved here so it was small. Neighbors had established beds. They shared with us. I asked if they seed saved they said no so I went through their gardens and showed then how and we allowed things to mature and then I went back and collected and fermented what needed and dried what didn't. We split all the seeds. So now I have a small seed library.
Very good showing how you tear the garden out! I am glad to know about the big sunflower roots and I will not try to dig out but cut and leave the root in the ground! My chemo has really messed up my gardening but husband has kept watered as much as he can! It's a lot! Blessings on all gardenersa
I love that we're always doing similar stuff in our gardens at the same time (more or less). I'm a smidge earlier/ warmer, but it's almost like a nice confirmation that I did the right thing. And since we're not that far apart in zones (I'm 8a), I still have time to go back and make adjustments if I forgot something or you remind me of a veg/fruit that I forgot. You're one of the very first youtubers I stumbled across when I first started wanting to learn about gardening. I have started planting my spinach, cauliflower and carrots with some flowers for my fall/winter garden. It was sad pulling out my cucumbers and some peppers. I had to trim my basil and I am planting my asparagus beans , I am in GA so where I live it stated the foods that I can plant in August. First time doing a winter garden. I don't have high expectations. Most of my tomatoes are dead except my cherry tomatoes. I live in the city so I have to container garden. I watched some videos you had about how you can plant in anything pretty much so I am making my own type of grow bags. I am planting in dollar tree fabric boxes you use for decorating and storage. This will be an adventure for sure! LOL. Thank you Jess for posting videos about gardening! My daddy had 7 large gardens growing up. We ate everything we grew, it was a wonderful time in my life! We also had a small bee farm and did honey. I had the best childhood!! You are raising your kids right. What you are teaching them now, they will rememthe rest of their lives! We grew up with God, family friends and FOOD. I am 43 and have been doing gardening on my own for a few years and your videos help me so much. Thank you and God bless you and yours.

I’m such a drama queen that I almost cried because one of my micro tomatoes was accidentally amputated...I literally have over a hundred tomato plants plus 60 or so dwarf and micro tomatoes but yeah... I got in a huff over one 😅 needless to say, I get moody until the fall crops fill in. Oh and I’m con fit-ing 🤔 some tomatoes today and that made me think of you 💚
I broke a branch off of one of our tomatoes plants and popped it into a vase of water. Once the roots started to grow I popped back into the garden. It is growing and flowering now. Hoping for more tomatoes before the season ends. I just could not throw the broken piece into the compost pile. 🤷🏻♀️🤪😃
You so right Jess. It’s hard. I’m older and a lot slower so I’m a little late planting my fall garden but considering I’ve never grown a fall garden I’m exciting. Im learning so much! My cucumbers were almost wiped out by a stray dog. They were barely hanging on and were stunted. They are now just starting to take off and I just trellised them. I’m hoping they last into the fall❤️

I just ripped out a bunch yesterday getting ready for my cold weather stuff as well. As a new gardener I'm still learning everything. I'm hoping to get some nice fall crops after a very successful first season 🥰
A lot of us here where I am have lost most of our gardens to the deer this year.😕😕 . I put up a taller fence and saved some things, but they are coming in late, so praying for a nice Indian Summer this year! My tomatoes are just now ripening! Put some root crops and red beans in for Fall, and look forward to next Spring here in n. Idaho!
Since summer started so late from me , my things are JUST starting to really produce . So I want to start fall stuff, but have no room! And I can't tear our my summer stuff early , that would be a waste of the imsane amounts of work I did all spring . Ahhhh
I have the same problem! No room for fall planting. I'm sticking some bush beans in the flower gardens where ever I can fit them. Planted some purple beans down the driveway. My husband thinks I'm crazy!

Its our first year gardening in central Arkansas and I was worried that I'd done something wrong as my summer crops die off, because I've heard how we have an extra month or so here in the south. Growing up, we always called broccoli “trees”. It was so fun! My brothers and I absolutely LOVE cooked broccoli (as well as breaded deep fried cauliflower).

This is my first year and live in zone 9A here in Houston TX. Had a bad summer and was not able to produce many of my plants. I am still working on my first compost pile and was wondering how much damage does it actually cost when throwing in infected or sick plants into the compost pile? Charles Downing says it's ok but many others say no. Living here in Houston I would assume the heat will kill any cross bacteria, but not too sure as i am still learning. Trying to figure out what to do with my dead summer plants with next years planting in mind. Please help! I have been following you from the start and you are very inspirational and I always look forward to all your videos! You are an amazing person and provide hope in so many ways. My summer garden was a big failure and disappointment. I did plant a couple of fall things but hadn't planned on doing much until I was inspired by your video this morning. I figured if you're planting all that with 70 days I could certainly do something with 90 days (zone 8a). Now I have replanted all of my spaces (1-4x8 raised bed and several containers).

Just a tip, I use a bicycle basket with hooks that grab over the handlebars to hook into the cattle panels while I pick heavy loads of food.
If you paint the handle of your hori hori a bright color it will be easier to find in the garden!
Pro tip.
Or wrap with neon duct tape. Won't chip off.

The way you’re talking about removing the garden, is how I feel when I have to “thin” seedlings. It’s so sad & wasteful.

We invest so much of us in our gardens that we can't help but feel affected by the end of summer but this year I'm feeling hopeful because for the first time, I'll have a few crops growing into winter and I'm already planning for next year. Thank you for your time, knowledge and humour.

I pulled my garden last weekend to make room for the fall garden. It really is bitter sweet. Now I have visions of the fall garden in my head trying to map it out.
Jess, I just have to tell you. Thanks to you for teaching me how to grow tomatoes last year and this year. I am finally getting ripe tomatoes! Last year I got enough to can my own tomato sauces. I only had about 40 plants last year. But with the adage of you can't eat the leaves. I did the pruning thing last year and my living on the southern Oregon coast. Where it doesn't get hot during the day. An forget about it being warm at night. So I always had huge lush tomato plants and tomatoes that never ripened. Till you. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You also inspired me early this year to start all my own tomato plants and all my other garden plants. I also got my greenhouse done in april. So I increased the amount, planting 130 tomato plants this year. And a couple of days ago. I went out and picked a big basket full of beautiful tomatoes. Of all kinds and sizes. And I brought them in to my farmhouse kitchen. I looked around for a place to set them down. And I had baskets of tomatoes sitting everywhere. I said out loud to myself. Oh my GOD! My kitchen looks like Jess's kitchen with all her tomatoes everywhere! And if it wasn't for your ideas, this 60 year old would still be growing big lush plants with hardly any ripe ones ever! Saturday is going to be tomato processing day. Pulled 8 gallon bags of tomatoes out of my freezer too. Next year I will be growing even more. I'm hooked! I planted 17 of my tomato plants in my greenhouse. And all my pepper plants too. They are doing really great. All the rest of the tomato plants are being grown outside. And the outside ones are actually ripening faster. I'm even getting alot of ground cherries. That I started from seed because of how much you all loved them. I love them too. Going to save up a bunch and make jam. Also have 5 Kari melons ripening away out in the garden. Again, thank you so much for all your wisdom and ideas. Garden on everyone!

I put in a big beautiful garden and what shocked me is how fast it's over. Luckily I found u and had learned to plant for fall🌱.

Your channel has been such a joy to watch this year and a true inspiration. I got myself three cattle panel trellises back in March for our Baltimore city back yard garden and the last month or so has been cucumbers galore and volunteer mystery squash as always. Last year we got a couple butternuts, this year it looks like acorn. 💚7b💚

You would be proid of me Jess. I managed to save seeds from everything I grew plus some of my neighbors garden efforts. My garden was new because we just moved here so it was small. Neighbors had established beds. They shared with us. I asked if they seed saved they said no so I went through their gardens and showed then how and we allowed things to mature and then I went back and collected and fermented what needed and dried what didn't. We split all the seeds. So now I have a small seed library.

Very good showing how you tear the garden out! I am glad to know about the big sunflower roots and I will not try to dig out but cut and leave the root in the ground! My chemo has really messed up my gardening but husband has kept watered as much as he can! It's a lot!

I love that we're always doing similar stuff in our gardens at the same time (more or less). I'm a smidge earlier/ warmer, but it's almost like a nice confirmation that I did the right thing. And since we're not that far apart in zones (I'm 8a), I still have time to go back and make adjustments if I forgot something or you remind me of a veg/fruit that I forgot. Thanks for all of your help. 💚

This video was great! I really appreciate you considering my request for the video and making it. I learned quite a few things about what to do when I have to take out certain plants from my little garden. You're one of the very first youtubers I stumbled across when I first started wanting to learn about gardening. I started a bit late this Spring, but I've learned so much from you and others in the garden community. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge and experience with us. We all really appreciate it.
I have started planting my spinach, cauliflower and carrots with some flowers for my fall/winter garden. It was sad pulling out my cucumbers and some peppers. I had to trim my basil and I am planting my asparagus beans , I am in GA so where I live it stated the foods that I can plant in August. First time doing a winter garden. I don't have high expectations. Most of my tomatoes are dead except my cherry tomatoes. I live in the city so I have to container garden. I watched some videos you had about how you can plant in anything pretty much so I am making my own type of grow bags. I am planting in dollar tree fabric boxes you use for decorating and storage. This will be an adventure for sure! LOL. Thank you Jess for posting videos about gardening! My daddy had 7 large gardens growing up. We ate everything we grew, it was a wonderful time in my life! We also had a small bee farm and did honey. I had the best childhood!! You are raising your kids right. What you are teaching them now, they will rememthe rest of their lives! We grew up with God, family friends and FOOD. I am 43 and have been doing gardening on my own for a few years and your videos help me so much. Thank you and God bless you and yours.

With basil, found out this year that if you cut it back close to the ground, it will regrow quickly with fresh new leaves.

I’m such a drama queen that I almost cried because one of my micro tomatoes was accidentally amputated...I literally have over a hundred tomato plants plus 60 or so dwarf and micro tomatoes but yeah... I got in a huff over one 😅 needless to say, I get moody until the fall crops fill in.
Oh and I’m con fit-ing 🤔 some tomatoes today and that made me think of you 💚
I broke a branch off of one of our tomatoes plants and popped it into a vase of water. Once the roots started to grow I popped back into the garden. It is growing and flowering now. Hoping for more tomatoes before the season ends. I just could not throw the broken piece into the compost pile. 🤷🏻♀️🤪😃
You so right Jess. It’s hard. I’m older and a lot slower so I’m a little late planting my fall garden but considering I’ve never grown a fall garden I’m exciting. I’ve learned so much from you this year and I thank you. I loved it when you said “We’re not just growing a garden, we’re growing a Gardner.” That’s a great way to look at it. That’s my new motto! Im learning so much! My cucumbers were almost wiped out by a stray dog. They were barely hanging on and were stunted. They are now just starting to take off and I just trellised them. I’m hoping they last into the fall❤️

I just ripped out a bunch yesterday getting ready for my cold weather stuff as well. As a new gardener I'm still learning everything. I'm hoping to get some nice fall crops after a very successful first season 🥰
A lot of us here where I am have lost most of our gardens to the deer this year.😕😕 . I put up a taller fence and saved some things, but they are coming in late, so praying for a nice Indian Summer this year! My tomatoes are just now ripening! Put some root crops and red beans in for Fall, and look forward to next Spring here in n. Idaho!
Since summer started so late from me , my things are JUST starting to really produce . So I want to start fall stuff, but have no room! And I can't tear our my summer stuff early , that would be a waste of the imsane amounts of work I did all spring . Ahhhh
I have the same problem! No room for fall planting. I'm sticking some bush beans in the flower gardens where ever I can fit them. Planted some purple beans down the driveway. My husband thinks I'm crazy!

Oh thank goodness. Its our first year gardening in central Arkansas and I was worried that I'd done something wrong as my summer crops die off, because I've heard how we have an extra month or so here in the south. Now i know I just need to be prepared to set up my fall crops. Priceless info. Thank you!

My grandson calls broccoli little trees. That how he started like them. He older now and just eats it.
Growing up, we always called broccoli “trees”. It was so fun! My brothers and I absolutely LOVE cooked broccoli (as well as breaded deep fried cauliflower).

First year gardener here: I found it amazingly meditative to take the cucumbers out. Felt like I was really getting ready for fall, and I'm so excited for our own Harvest Festival around October
This is my first year and live in zone 9A here in Houston TX. Had a bad summer and was not able to produce many of my plants. I am still working on my first compost pile and was wondering how much damage does it actually cost when throwing in infected or sick plants into the compost pile? Charles Downing says it's ok but many others say no. Living here in Houston I would assume the heat will kill any cross bacteria, but not too sure as i am still learning. Trying to figure out what to do with my dead summer plants with next years planting in mind. Please help! I have been following you from the start and you are very inspirational and I always look forward to all your videos! You are an amazing person and provide hope in so many ways. My summer garden was a big failure and disappointment. I did plant a couple of fall things but hadn't planned on doing much until I was inspired by your video this morning. I figured if you're planting all that with 70 days I could certainly do something with 90 days (zone 8a). Now I have replanted all of my spaces (1-4x8 raised bed and several containers).
