    The F1 New has a hybrid shutter, which means that it can be controlled electronically, or, without batteries, mechanically. That's the feature that makes the F1 new so unique.

    Don't forget that the different focussing screens provide different metering modes! Average, partial and spot metering. They can be recognized by the first letter of the focussing screen (A = average, P = Partial and S = Spot Metering).
    With the power winder shutter priority shooting is also possible.

    The F-1 New shutter can continue to operate if the battery fails (15:30 in the video). Removing the battery will engage the mechanical shutter mechanism and shutter speeds from 1/2000 to 1/125 plus the flash sync 1/90 will work. The shutter button does loose it’s great feel in mechanical mode but limited mechanical backup is there if needed. The FD 50mm 1.4 is a great lens. I have used it on my Fuji X-Pro2 with a Novoflex adapter. It renders very nicely and is sharp even wide open on Fuji’s crop sized sensor. I think that I prefer the way it renders compared to Fuji’s own 50mm f2.0 (but the Fuji might be sharper). Thanks for the video.

    Before my m2 I rocked the F1-new and 50 1.4 combo for years. It was my go too for daily shooting, portrait and wedding work etc. An amazing camera to say the least. Loved the street work during your walk! Your work is improving by leaps and bounds! I love it!

      KingJvpes i loved slr’s, and honestly I hated rangefinders before the Leica. All of them I had ever used had broke on me before I could get the hang of it (4 Canon rangefinders, Yashica, Minolta, Kiev) . I went into Leica with expectations of hating it and selling it off, but realized that it was actually the perfect camera for me. Now I find it difficult to go back to slr.

    I really love this heavy metal beast of a camera. Especially in rain, snow or cold weather. I'm not sure if the film advance lever is actually plastic - if it's plastic, it is massive plastic ;-). 15:24 The New F-1 does have a kind of hybrid shutter: Shutter speeds from 1/2000 to 1/90 sec and B are mechanically governed. So they work without battery also. 16:07 As long as the AE Motor Drive FN is NOT installed, please make sure to put in the Rewind Coupler Cover. Without it, there will be a hole left in the bottom plate that can be seen on the right, and some light might get into the film chamber.

    I owned both Canon F1-NEW and Nikon F3. I got rid of the F3 6 months later. I found the F1-NEW much better. You my can feel the quality of this beast just by holding it. This camera will never die. I have also the Canon A1, FTb, and T90. All good pieces of engineering. The lenses are just splendid.This said, the F3 is still a legendary very good camera, I had good time with it during the 6 months I had it, but couldn't match up with the , F1 or the T90. Would have loved to keep it, but have enough cameras, with one unique set of Canon FD lenses, used by all my Canon camera.

    I still have my Canon F-1 that I bought new as a teenager in 1976. It was my first professional camera and I used it to photograph a few weddings and for travel. At the time, I wanted the Nikon F2 but it was more expensive.

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      qnetx haha any reason why you liked the f2 over the f-1?!

    • @qnetx
      @qnetx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Purely emotional. Many of the Nat Geo, Life Magazine, and Fashion photographers that I admired at the time seemed to be pictured with Nikons. I thought the Nikon F2 Photomic had a unique look that was aesthetically pleasing. Years later I used a Nikon F2 Photomic in the studio and I liked the way it felt in my hands, the viewfinder, and the sound and feel of the shutter. Today I have an F2 Photomic, F3 HP, F4, and an FM2 and my favorite between them is a toss up between the FM2 and the F3 HP. I like the build and feel of the F3 HP but I find the FM2 easier to shoot because the lit up LED meter on the FM2 is easier for me to see than the F3 meter and the FM2 is lighter to carry. The Canon F-1 is still much appreciated because it is a solid, easy to use camera and has sentimental value to me. I have the original version (not the N or New version).

    • @longde
      @longde 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      fun thing is that here my Canon F-1 (original model) costed more than the F2. I have bought three F2 in total these years, yet only one F-1.

      @sportsfanivosevic9885 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have both and the only thing better in the F1N is the brightness and exposure information in the finder. The F3 is so much better in the hands though because the Canon grip brings your fingers closer to the lens which causes rubbing with the fingers doing the focusing, very irritating.

    Nice video... Do you know where your light leaks are coming from? You're missing the Motor Drive cover screws, there are three of them, but the one under the rewind knob is the culprit. Those screw covers are very difficult to find. Put some gaffers tape over the cassette hole and maybe over the the one on the opposite side. BTW, there is a storage spot on the motor drive to put all three covers when the motor drive is on. The big motor drive has to have all three openings, as it can rewind the film. The smaller motor drive only needs the take-up gear access. The small motor drive I believe is 8 double "A's" and the big one is 12 double "A's" and it is 5 fps. There was a third motor drive that requires an external NiCad battery pack and I believe that could pull the film at close to 9fps. That one went well with the bulk roll film back holding 250 frames.
    I currently have two F1's, both the New version and I have the AE Finder, Eye Level Finder, Waist Level Finder with 6x magnification, and the sports finder. Just sold one of my A1's, so now I have 3 of those. Try and FL Lens, which is the older versions of the FD's. They have stop down rings on the lens. Try an FL 55 1.2 .
    Cheers!

    The New F-1 does have a battery, but it can operate without a battery for most shutter speeds. Something like 1/30th through 1/1000th. I forget exactly. The catch is that it cannot operate with a DEAD battery. If your battery dies, you have to remove it to access the shutter speeds cited above. Love your work. Thanks for sharing.

    I have the F1n and the F3, it depends on the shooter actually which one is better, but the F1n is more rugged you can use it as a weapon and i don't think you can damage it by doing that. I like the needle metering better too you know right away how much over or under expose your shots are going to be. The f3 is smooth in operation, lighter and better glass and more options. Good video dude keep it up. Keep the film shooting alive! 👍🏼

      @ZommBleed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      deej807 The A1 is much lighter and has all the priority features without having to add on other attachments. However, it's not a battle tank like the F1. (If you live in a very cold climate maybe the A1 isn't for you, many shooters report the A1 shutting down.) The F1 is definitely a Pro camera while the A1 is a consumer/prosumer camera. I have both. Either will serve you well but I think the F1 will outlast other Canons simply due to its over engineering.

I can turn the aperture ring on the lens, but the diaphragm blades never leave the full open position. As far as I remember, F-1 new could work without batteries, but only for exposure time between 1/60th till 1/8000th. For exposures below 1/30th you still needed a battery. Or was that applied to Canon F-1n, I couldn't tell...
    Anyway, I would urge you to try a third legendary camera camera from that time and class with removable viewfinder, the Pentax LX. If you have the chance to find it and money of course...

    Is there a significant difference between the f1N and a1?

    • @JerryMilton
      @JerryMilton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Day and Night. Owned both in the 80's. Still have the F1N. The A1 was an ALL electronic camera....no match needle. if the battery was dead, the camera was dead. The F1N can shoot all shutter speeds sans a battery...nevermind the interchangeable viewfinders on the F1N, but not the A1. The A1 was a "prosumer" camera. the F1N was a pro camera.

    Hey, I'm just watching your video now, thanks for the review, it's helpful. Did you ever get to do the comparison between Canon New F-1 and Nikon F3 ? I can't find it but maybe I'm blind :P

    F1 New works without battery just fine (B and from 1/125 to 1/2000 exposures), in manual and without light-meter of course

  • @Topsyrm
    @Topsyrm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Had 3 of these back in the day, still have my first one and a bunch of lenses plus motordrive. You keep calling it the F-1 New, is that an American term because I've always known it as the New F-1 which is what it is called on my original instruction manual. Whatever you call it you are right it is a tank of a camera and IMO better than the Nikon F3 and I have used both extensively Nikon was the work (military) provided camera my own was preference was the F-1, similarly the work MF camera was Hassleblad but I preferred the Bronica SQ-Ai and still have 3 of them.

    • @ingowalkerling5141
      @ingowalkerling5141 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were in fact three F-1 models. The first modell was introduced in 1971, along with the hole then new FD system. That was an entirely new development in the camera industry , since up them systems grew around a camera body... with all compromises within technical development. That disadvantage was avoided with the F-1 system out of one cast. In 1976 the first model was altered in some slight design changes (film advance lever, pc-sync connection, film memory clip and some minor interior changes). That was the F-1n.
      In 1981 Canon designed the F-1 completely new. That was named the New F-1, and the type you see here reviewed.

    I've got Canon AE-1 program , Contax 159MM and Canon F1 new. The AE1 and Contax are lighter and do 95% of what the F1 does. If you want lightweight street - go AE1 ; if you need the extra features go F1 but you'll defo pay for it with the weight difference. I agree about Canon being compelling for accessories - you can get just about anything for it cheap and most of the lenses and flashes are interchangeable between AE1 and F1. that light seal issue is easily fixed - you can buy kits on eBay to renew them. I've done that on AE1 program.

    Its not pure metal, but brass or copper stamped over plastic. Kind of a precursor to later composite plastics. Used my AE-1P forever then my A-1s. Never hot an F-1 but wanted one. Note that the F-1n still works without battery in mechanical shutter mode, but with some speeds restricted and no metering. I moved to an a7 II to best use all my FD glass. I miss film.

    Another good video and the growth carries on. I can certainly see what you are trying to do and overall you are doing brilliant but you need to ask yourself "Why?" more often. Can I ask why you pushed Acros? Especially with the interesting light you had, you have you sacrificed tonal range for shutter speed that wasn’t really needed. People were moving, but 1/250 would have been fast enough shutter speed. Push film in low light when you have to, not when you are using the best black and white film ever made for tonal range. You might as well have kept half the film cost in your pocket and used HP5 or TriX and then developed in DD-X, you would have had comparable results for far less money. Too many young TH-camrs push film without a constructive reason beyond it sounds a cool thing to do. Your photography has grown more than anyone I can think of on TH-cam, you have a true passion in your heart but try and get some of that passion in your images. Think about the story you are telling, if you find a place that’s great for a composition rule stay there a while and wait for something or someone interesting to appear. But these people have to have a little more than a frame within a frame or a leading line. You have to get something of yourself in the image, I don’t mean a selfie. The image with the bowl would have been great if you had got closer in, the newspaper was great (allowing for light leaks). Just look at the images of Robert Frank a phenomenal story teller with his images. Think of his Rolling Stones images, they were never the glitzy superstar images other photographers got but intimate shots that told a story of human beings. You always felt he was there with them, not 50 yards away. But a lot of his best early images were not super sharp, possibly because he didn’t want to sacrifice the tonal range of his film for a faster shutter speed? You are certainly well and truly on the right road, and you definitely have more natural talent and more drive than most on TH-cam.

      josue avellaneda yep, the F1 is a cracking camera but i prefer the size and weight of the EF, its aperture priority implementation is really well thought out and i prefer the metering system of the EF. The shutter speed dial is also much better, i didnt like the dial on the F1 with the AE finder it kind of got in the way and wasnt as intuitive. Its little quirks and foibles which can sway me to one model over another, they are lovely tools its just finding the one that fits your style. Cheers, jon

    Hey brother amazing video and stunning images. I am a new film shooter and I have a question though, in the daytime did you use AP/Auto mode and just let the shutter speed adjust itself while you were walking around? Or did you memorize a couple shutter speeds you needed for the sun and the shadows and then just switch it manually accordingly? Wondering which one makes better photos or if it matters. All the best man
