You know, I lost my mom a few years back, and yesterday would have been her birthday. I think this would have been a nice thing to watch together. She got me into gaming, and she loved RPGs. She even drew her own accurate map for the original Final Fantasy on NES. Thank you for uploading a nice gift for her. You guys are great.
I remember when my grandparents visited my home, my mom warned my brother not to show them Mortal Kombat. But my brother did anyways and my grandmother found it fascinating.
My mum loved mortal kombat, we used to play together.
She was so good with Sonya, goddamnit.
Gunstar Heroes is indisputably one of the best games on the Genesis. The music is great, the game looks awesome, and it's got some fantastic controls. So when I tell you that Treasure wound up making an even better run-n-gun with Alien Soldier, you know it's gotta be stellar.
If you like Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier and ever wondered how those games would've worked in 3D (and on Nintendo consoles), check out the Sin&Punishment games on the N64 and Wii!
@@thestripedmenace I agree 100% that Gunstar Heroes is one of the top games on the Genesis. And I also agree with this reply. At the very least, you MUST play S&P Star Successor if you like Treasure games.
Editor Dylan never fails to make me laugh, sometimes in hysteria. Dude makes comedy gold!
So glad to see Gunstar Heroes in the spotlight. Definitely one of the best games on the Sega Genesis. I personally rank it just as high as Sonic 2 on my greatest games of all-time list.
Gunstar Heroes was one of those games that I rented and had to own. To this day it's my favorite game on the Genesis. As someone who had dumped quarters into Metal Slug, it was the perfect home based compromise, and just as fun. I still own copy with the case and the original Fruit Roll-Up that came with some Sega games
Literally the series I look to every Friday, great work Jared, Dylan, and the rest of the NitN team!
Mortal Kombat is Here POGGERS!!! Sub Zero was my favourite in this game. I also loved the original Gunstar Heroes 😊
I gotta say that Gunstar Heroes is one of my all time favorite 16 bit games. That stage select music is an absolute banger. And I love the run and gun game play with all of the explosions and tons of enemies to blow up. And it's honestly one of the more accessible games of the entire 16 bit generation being one of the very few I can beat without cheats. Easily in the top 3 of all time genesis games. Oh yeah, and Mortal Kombat was pretty damn influential. I personally like the more recent mortal kombat games more than the recent street fighters but the classic street fighters usually are more fun (by a slight margin) than classic mortal kombats. Although, no one can deny mortal kombat 2 or 3 is the best choice for a 16 bit mortal kombat.
Gunstar Heroes kick ass. 😀👍🎮
oh jeez, MK is taking me back. my dad got it for me on Genesis during the media uproar. i was so pumped to see that our local newspaper ran an article about it...and included the codes!! he snipped that and saved it for me, wish i had those today!!
Mortal Monday was an amazing time. If you werent there, I dont know how to describe what it was like. The hype was incredible.
Dude I remember Rocky Rodent! That game was awesome. You brought back a huge wave of nostalgia when you showed the gameplay!
Same here! That game was a genuinely fun time!
One of my favorite games as a kid, my mom and I would play it for hours. I remember getting past the construction site one time and being so excited lol
Yee haww!
On Mortal Kombat here in the UK to help promote it they had a whole episode of the UK video game show Gamesmaster to showcase it with Daniel Pesina and Elizabeth Malecki playing the Genesis version on the show.
Mortal Kombat was like the forbidden fruit of gaming. MK2 was huge when I was a kid and my parents forbade me from playing it because of the violence. When they realized that didn't work, they got me MK3 for the PC. Good times.
No shit...I have the same exact story. Couldn’t play the second one on my genesis but mom eventually bought me mk3 for DOS.
I'm so very glad that Treasure managed to get games made. They are up there as one of the game developers that made banger after banger with few, if any, real stinkers.
I remember seeing MK1 the 1st time in the arcade at my local bowling ally. Completely. Blown.away. some older guy there just killing it....had never heard of it before that. And SO many hours spent playing Mk2 at sleep overs..... thanks for bringing up these memories
So glad this series is still going, because now we're getting to the REALLY good stuff.
My first encounter with Gunstar Heroes was when my friend rented it, strangely from a guy who rented games out of the back of his car, we played it for hours and have always loved the hell out of it. To think we almost never got it.
I had the SNES port and my neighbor had the Genesis port, and we both preferred the Sega port because the uncensored stuff of course, but the controls were much more responsive and flowed better on the Genesis.
With Mortal Kombat 1 around the corner, this is the most perfect timing an episode has been.
MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAT!!!!
FINISH HIM!!!
FATALITY!!!!
FLAWLESS VICTORY!!!
Happy Friday!
"Your mom would hate you if you played this game!" cracked me up. So much '90s 'tude it even defeats unconditional love!
First time I saw MK1, I was at a local pizza place and heard a bunch of noise going on in the arcade; my curious kid self peeked in and saw a bunch of teenagers crowded around a single machine so I stopped and watched what looked like a playable Ray Harryhausen movie come to life as this four-armed guy just beat this yellow ninja guy to death; after the kids left I spent my quarter trying out the game and had a ton of fun with it even if I didnt know what was going on. I told people at school about the game but they'd never heard of it- not until the home console launch on Mortal Monday did people really know what it was all about.
Mortal Monday is immortalized. Any kid growing up in the 90s knows that date by heart. It was bigger than any other day, excluding Christmas.
Mortal kombat!!!!!
TEST YOUR MIGHT!!!
I actually look forward to "now in the 90's" every friday... damn Jared, good job.
Also I got Rocky Rodent from a friend on the school yard...I felt like it was not bad
My first Mortal Kombat experience will always stay with me. I first ran into it in a Wal-Mart when they were cool enough to have arcade cabinets. I popped in my quarter, picked Sub Zero, then Mom approached asking what I was playing. I thought I was dead since she'd bought into the violence thing, but upon seeing it herself she said it wasn't bad at all and that I could play it no problem. Gamer parents rule, man.
Mortal Kombat! Hell yeah, been a fan of this franchise since it’s inception and I vividly remember playing this very first one on my old friend’s PC, arcades and on my Sega Genesis with the 32x. Scorpion and Sonya were my main in the very first one. Nice having the Genesis Abacab album art while saying the blood/fatality cheat code, btw, it got a chuckle out of me as a fan of the band Genesis.
The Mortal Monday commercial was the first time I heard the "MORTAL KOMBAT!" yell.
I was so happy when former WWE Superstar, Batista, shouted "MORTAL KOMBAT!" for the Mortal Kombat 1 reboot trailer.
Sonya was best because you could just cheese her ring blasts to take down Goro
One thing to note, since it's easy to forget, is the Genesis Mortal Kombat, even if you discount the blood and not having as nice graphics and sounds, it straight up felt better to play even with the 3 button pad because the SNES version had awful input lag.
Yeah, this one is an odd miss. Nobody considers the SNES version the superior version, unless they're just button mashing.
Yeah, Genesis ver flowed like butter. Blast processing. Plus the sound track was awesome.
Oh yes the Kombat of Mortals, a series I know well lol
Gunstar Heroes, one of my favorite games from my absolute favorite developer, Treasure. Each game they made is truly something special and unique.
First time I heard about Mortal Kombat was my buddy telling me he played "Big Trouble In Little China: The Video Game"... I eventually realized he was talking about Mortal Kombat when my local bowling alley got a cabinet.
Mortal Kombat-Mortal Kombat 1 what a series blessed to see it all I’ve seen all of gaming from 1980-Now
Oh, God, I'm old. I'm just 42 but I feel like I'm 80 when I see stuff like this. Animaniacs premiered the same day that year. We're all old!!!
Love that he put up a picture of Abacab by Genesis when he read the ABACABB code
I was and am not good at fighting games but I definitely spent a roll or two of quarters at the arcade just because Mortal Kombat was the kool thing to do. It is crazy to still see it going today. Thank you all for the work every week, and double thanks for the shoutout lol!
I don't remember where I first was, but I do remember one time when I rented it. I used a VCR to record myself playing the game before it went back to Blockbuster. The next morning, I played the tape while pretending to play, so my sister would come out. I then announced, "Ooh, I should get breakfast. I'm gonna put this on auto." I then set the controller down and let the tape keep playing. She was completely mystified, it was great.
Mortal Kombat 1993-2023 30 years of greatness
like he said.....OH SNAAAP!
I was in school in the Navy. I was the only guy in the barracks with a TV and SNES on my floor. I became very popular in my class for a while.
And the new MK1 just came out yesterday in 2023. Flawless Victory!!!
"He's in the pink!"
"The mustard is off the hotdog!"
It is not just you, Dylan.....
I remember seeing that Mortal Kombat commercial on TV, and my older brother not believing me. It was so satisfying when we got a copy of Mortal Kombat, and I got to give him this smug look.
Also, hell yeah to Gunstar Heroes. I can't how many times we rented this.
I remember getting this game on the day it was released. Couldn’t wait to get home and play it. Definitely wasn’t disappointed.
That was a pretty good "Come here!" impression, Jared.
Man I love Gunstar Heros. Played the shit out of that on the Genesis as a kid.
It still remains as amazing now as it did back then.
I still vividly remember running to Blockbuster at 8 years old to rent the Super Nintendo version of Mortal Kombat the week it came out, taking it home, popping it in, turning it on, and... the title screen for the Home Alone game popping up. I was woefully confused, wondering if it was some gag like the Ghostbusters 2 screen at the beginning of the NES Three Stooges game. But nope, full Home Alone. We took it back to Blockbuster, they looked at the cart, and saw that the screws were tampered with, with the previous customer swapping out the chips. Took a few more days before I found a copy of an untampered MK at another Blockbuster, lol.
I remember back when Mortal Kombat came out. I hadn't had the chance yet to see it in arcades, and my parents wouldn't let me rent it because of its reputation. Then one day there was an accident that damn well could've killed me, and not only did I get to stay home from school that day, but my mom took me to the video store to rent me any game I wanted. I took 200% advantage of that, and rented Mortal Kombat. Only to get home, and be disappointed that the violence didn't live up to my expectations built up from all the hype, not knowing that the uncensored blood was hidden behind a cheat code.
I'm with editor Dylan, Gunstar Heroes is one of the best Genesis games out there. The gameplay is fast and tight, the multiplayer is a blast, and the OST just *SLAPS!* I still listen to it all the time when writing or driving.
Rocky Rodent is what I consider a hidden gem on the SNES. The hair-based weapon is very unique with the several hairstyles, but also the game has many memorable and off-the-wall moments, including: sprinting on a highway (and overtaking a bazillion cars in the process), exploring a ghost ~apartment~ (instead of the usual ghost house), using your hair to play friggin' basketball, and the game over - in which Rocky collapses, becomes an angel and ascends to heaven, complete with church music.
Speaking of music, the dramatic theme of the final level is engraved in my mind.
I played the Genesis port of Mortal Kombat religiously as a kid, loved that game
I'll always remember this commercial for the rest of my life.
The first time I saw Mortal Kombat 2 was when I was 5 years old. My older brother called me over and said "Hey, watch this!" He then proceeded to do Reptile's fatality (the one where he eats the opponent's head) and I ran out of the room crying because I was so scared.
Funny that right when you said "mortal monday" I got the ad for the new reboot which also features shouting in the street. XD
Mortal Monday was probably the biggest gaming event since Sonic 2uesday and rightfully so. Releasing the game on 4 consoles simultaneously was a big deal. I remember playing the Sega CD version that came out a year later and was let down by the insane loading times, which made me go back to the Sega Genesis version.
Also, may be a hot take, but the Genesis OST is my favorite Mortal Kombat soundtrack. Matt Furniss did an amazing job and he composed some other amazing tunes like in Wiz N Liz, Boogerman, Mickey Mania, and Lost Viking. It stays from the original but I'd argue it's more memorable.
Raiden’s and Sub-Zero’s fatalities on the SNES were still pretty cool.
I remember a friend that always chose Sub-Zero for MK II because the ice grenade fatality was the only one he could do consistently.
I remember when I first saw the first MK machine: it was with my dad. He use to go bowling on the weekends with his work buddies. I would tag along and watch. But, I really was there for their arcade corner. He would give me $10 and let me go crazy. So, one weekend, we went to that bowling alley and it was when I first laid my eyes on the MK cabinet. There were two cause of the popularity. At that time, I couldn’t get my hands on it cause it was always crowded with other kids, waiting in line, getting their quarters in to button mash. It was at that same bowling alley where i got to experience how to get to reptile
I fondly remember studying Nintendo Power's coverage of the upcoming Mortal Kombat game. I practiced Sonja's move sets with the SNES controller while waiting for the game to come out. My brother rented the game (he was definitely the better gamer of us two I will admit) and I stunned him on how "easily" I was trouncing him on the game. He got rather frustrated with me and I did admit that I practiced ahead of time to do what I did. Good times.
Glory unto Editor Dylan, and Now in the 90s!!
I don't even know how many times I rented Mortal Kombat from Blockbuster back in the day. My group of friends and I spent hours playing it and figuring out fatalities. It was THE game at the time.
"...equally incredible Mortal Kombat movie..."
You're goddamn right it was incredible.
I remember this day in 93 very well. Me and my friends played this game to Fatality. Then it was 2 then 3.
Mortal Kombat: Kome for the Gore, Stay for the Lore!
I feel incredibly ancient right now after my nine year old saw this and thought the Mortal Monday ads looked silly, not understanding why it was such a big deal. Just gonna move on to funeral planning videos for myself after this.
Let's not forget the DULLARD debug code for the Sega Genesis MK port. It made it so much easier to encounter Reptile.
I know the first time I played MK I didn't understood you needed to beat the opponent before you could do a fatality. I picked Scorpion and intended to block+up,up my way to victory.
This show makes me feel old and seen simultaneously! Love it though
Gunstar Heroes is my favorite game on the Genesis. It was in heavy play when I hung out with my one friend who had a Genesis. We would keep tossing and catching the die on Black's stage over and over for laughs.
It's strange to see how much has changed with the violence in Mortal Kombat back then with what we have now. The outcry of "violence in video games" back in the day seemed so overblown, but it has a legacy to live off of
Imagine going back in time, and showing the people of the early 90s what Mortal Kombat would eventually become.
I had Mortal Kombat on Game Gear first. I used to know the blood code by heart. I later got the SNES version, and honestly didn’t care that the blood was missing. It was a good time either way.
Man, eventhough I’ve seen the Mortal Kombat commercial and heard the song so many times, it still gives me goosebumps.
I only Knew Mortal Kombat from the Arcade so I had no idea about that shift in gore.
Keep it up Editor Dylan.
Ooooh. That's why mortal kombat released their new game the same day as the original.
Mortal Kombat. I remember seeing a group of folks around an arcade machine playing it. They had a monitor above the arcade displaying exactly what the players were doing.
Great memory! I was sixteen and it was my first midnight release. Hanging out in front of Wal-Mart waiting.
Thank you for brightening up my fridays.
It's so crazy cool that Mortal Kombat 1 came out the week the very first game released. I had the Genesis version, but had no idea how to put the blood code in, so instead of ripping spines... I uppercutted them high in the sky... I would figure the blood code out eventually, thank you gaming magazines. 😁
The first Mortal Kombat blood cheat code lives rent free in my head
Gunstar Heroes just oozes 90s Coolness. It has that classic action anime aesthetic that I wish would make a comeback.
Im gonna say it….
*MOOOORTAAAALLL KOOOOOMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!*
Gunstar Heroes is a classic. Treasure was a master of game development and made some of the best games ever
Animaniacs also premiered the same day on September 13 on Fox Kids when Mortal Kombat was released for home consoles on Mortal Monday.
I played Gunstar Heroes as my first actual gaming date, as in "Game and chill" with this one girl in college.
Good times and fantastic game.
that iconic "Mortal kombat" yell still gets me hyped for mortal kombat
Another week, another awesome video. Thanks guys.
Oh wow, Rocky Rodent... played it a lot at a friend's back then, but never could remeber what it was called. Thanks for the reminder.
Mortal Kombat on Game Gear is surprisingly solid for what it is. It's missing Kano and only has two stages to fight in, but the fighter sprites translated far better onto the thing than expected, and it has a blood code just like the Genesis. It's probably not worth playing today, but it's a little better than you might think.
The Game Boy version, though? Yeah, burn it to the ground. Not even the ability to play as Goro makes that thing worth spending time on.
Mortal Monday! I remember my brother driving me to the mall, we got it on the genesis
GUNSTAR HEROES!!
A great game~ Played it with my brother co-op, the number of times we got into wars of throwing each other at things.. or just used it tactically, when we actually worked together ;D Such great memories!
I was in 8th grade on "Mortal Monday." My Dad let me stay home from school to play Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis all day! My Dad's so cool! 😎
Dylan basically did a Fatality on the LaserActive.
Still playing Mortal Kombat to this day
I always enjoy watching this show every friday.
Of course your gonna go with Mortal Kombat, cause that’s the year that defined the 90s gaming as a whole. This game impacted me as a kid, and it still does today.
"Legends of the Ring" sounds more like a high fantasy game than... a boxing title.
And all us SNES owners gleefully took our copy home only to discover it had been neutered.
It hits harder when you remember the commercials.
Mortal kombat! DO DO DO DO
Love the series keep it up!
