I once could not understand the appeal of this simple yet elegant line. But once you dig into its rich history a distinct story appears. I could make a whole collection just on Calatravas!
Great discussion. I'm not a fan of Patek's new design direction. There are some highlights (5172 and the Grand Comps), but generally I think they're starting to look bulky and obvious. You can see the marketing strategy made metal: "MUST LOOK YOUNG!!" Like a retired Swiss banker in a shell-suit, never good. Patek should lead, not follow. 'Calatrava' now stands for nothing as a range and a classical, refined, traditional aesthetic is being unceremoniously dumped.
Is the 5227 always engraved in the inner part of the hunters case? Ive seen a few on chrono 24 with a clear mirror finish and come with papers. Wondering if they are legit

They really need to update the 5196 with a see through caseback. I love the 6119 but its not a proper replacement hobnail bezel and all. I just hope the new one isnt too big.
The Patek 5524G Pilot looks very similar to the Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special 40mm. Both have several similar features especially the arabic numerals. Did Patek copy the idea from Zenith?
Amazed that no time was given to the 5212a Weekly Calendar. A Calatrava case with amazing lugs that combines a first of its kind complication whilst maintaining a vintage appearance that targets tue modern man. A classic watch right right, that remains the most interesting offering in the current collection. I wonder where the classic watch will fit going forward. Who wears such a watch as the 6119r? As a 40 something, I personally can’t see an occasion to wear it. Does fashion do a U-turn at some point from steel sports back to classic gold?
I was lucky enough to get one from an AD here in the UK. Just recently I've decided it's time for a change of strap-style from the factory brown calfskin. Right now I've got it on (I kid you not!) a vintage Bond Nato strap. I guess it wouldn't warm the heart of Thierry Stern to see this - but it actually looks surprisingly good :-P (I think olive green calf or goat leather is the way to go - but it's looking like I might have to have one custom made.)
@@antg.3846 not entirely correct….at least I don’t think it is. The 6007a limited edition is a Calatrava and in steel, hence the ‘a’. If I’m correct, technically any round case is classed as a Calatrava case design. On the official Patek website they do have a specific section for Calatrava watches. As you say, they are all in precious metal, yet many other watches in other categorizes are described to have a Calatrava cases (eg 5327 Grand Complication) It would be good to hear an expert define what it really means to be ‘Calatrava’.
@@antg.3846 Logically speaking you would have to be right. But the words "Patek Philippe", "steel", and "cheap" haven't gone together very easily since the 1950s. Nowadays it is even referred to as "the king of metals" in some Patek circles. Personally I prefer steel (genuinely!) just because its greater robustness makes for a better everyday wearer. Unfortunately this argument is now usually met with a skeptical and sardonic smile by Patek ADs... I got incredibly lucky when I was on vacation last summer - I was in precisely the right place at precisely the right time and was able to do a deal involving other purchases.
Tim is a legend but his choice of the watch he’s wearing is incomprehensible! Talking about Patek Philippe while wearing a hideous plastic watch! 🤦🏻♂️
Nah. That is just snobbery. There is enjoyment to be had at every price level and wearing something cheap is a good counterpoint to the subject at hand. I like the irreverence.
