@@kart182 True, but I think a lot of it has to do with perception of value. The Prius analogy actually somewhat works for Louis Vuitton bags, which are thousands of dollars for what amounts to a PVC and brass handbag. I think there are many people who care more about feeling rich and demonstrating wealth than they do about what it is they're shelling out money for. I.e., so long as the Prius has a designer hood ornament, people will buy it.

It will never be in my price range but nor is the Mona Lisa or a brand new Rolls-Royce Phantom , but that has never stopped me from appreciating their existence as an object to look upon. Glad they are now 39mm.
A friend of the family owns the older Calatrava, i think 33mm and my dad who isn't a watch person, who probably thinks Blancpain is something you need medication for and Bell & Ross is a comedy duo was asked how much do you think it cost, nearly had a heart attack when told.

Great video. I’m definitely buying a Patek 5231G when I reach a financial goal that I have in mind. But I love watches and you’re right if you don’t have that much appreciation for watches or the budget you could buy a Grand Seiko and be just as happy or if that is out of your budget you could buy an Orient and be thrilled. One of my favorite watches is a diver from micro brand called Lorier (which sell out fast) because it has a look of 1960s Omega and Rolex which remind me of the watch in Goldfinger. Watches I feel are a very personal thing.

If you can spend 40 grand on a watch comfortably, go for it without thinking about it. But if you're someone who'll be saving up for it, there's always going to be just a little bit worriness in the back of your mind if something remotely were to happen to it. Nathan made a very good point about owning original pieces that inspire other brands to make similar pieces in the same style segment at a lower price range (in this case the Orient bambino and the Seiko Cocktail time are what come to mind). I'm a fashion designer and absolutely adore craftsmanship and tradition that is put in to produce quality products of any kind and even though it's not even in sight of my affordability right now, I would definitely love to own one someday even though if it's second hand. If you truly value the brand and it's heritage and love dress watches ; go for it. It'll be worth it.

The cost of wear is probably free if you sell it eventually. Watches are the ultimate way to look your best and have someone else pay for it, if you buy the right watch. Patek is 100% in that category so if you can front the cash, you will get most of it back when you sell.

The latter does this even with its base models, while Patek goes “over the top” with finishing on its complicated movements (not the base calatrava). A cell phone tells the time, can call almost anyone, connects to the internet and TH-cam, streams live TV, tells you the weather, has games, has banking, etc. I like my pocket watch just fine, but I hope that if I decide to drop thousands of dollars on something that serves no real purpose beyond being a cumbersome way to tell the time, my family calls the mental hospital pronto. • @themoderndandy713
      @themoderndandy713 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Pocket watches have almost always been acceptable for black and white tie. It more had to do with formality back in ye old days when wristwatches were new and casual. I've heard the rule of never wearing a timepiece with evening formalwear, and I really have no idea where it came from; even in the Victorian era, men were wearing timepieces with white tie.
The idea of the rule is that there should be no concern for time at an elegant, formal event, but there are seemingly obvious reasons why this might not be true. Say you're going to the opera - you probably need to know when to arrive, when it starts, and when to catch your ride home if you're not driving yourself. As a groom, you might need to be able to move things along at your wedding in a timely manner, which is better with a watch than a phone.
It's more important to match the formality of your watch to your outfit - sport watches for more casual outfits and combinations, dress watches for combinations and suits, black dress watches or pocket watches for black tie, and pocket watches for morning dress and white tie.

@@themoderndandy713 Thanks - that makes sense. I will say that wearing a wristwatch with black tie just "feels/looks off" to me. Maybe because it lessens the right-left balance in an outfit that is otherwise free from distractions/patterns. Maybe it's the visual weight of the double cuff + cuff link that I wear with a black tie. (I don't have a single-cuff black-tie shirt) I don't have a great reason other than to say that it's a personal preference, not adherence to a "rule."

@@mitchmitchell9588 Yes, Mitch, I was assuming "for" was the word your so-called auto-correct replaced with "fir". Funny, my and everyone else's auto-correct replaces non-words with real ones. Yours apparently is enhanced to replace for with fir? Try again. You're digging quite a hole for yourself!

So a Rolex that can go anywhere and do anything and last just as long but cost half to a third isn’t worth it but a precious metals tea and crumpets watch you wear once a month for 30k is worth it!?! Come one. Also did you even touch one in real life for this video? That looked like stock or borrowed footage. Did you actually wear one? How do you review something you never even wore?

Our friend @FedericoTalksWatches sent us a few Calatravas to use for the video. Raphael has previously stated his views on Rolex here: www.gentlemansgazette.com/7-reasons-id-never-buy-a-rolex/?

think about it like this; a pair of nike running shoes that are made in china is going to be 1/40th (or whatever) the price of a bespoke leather oxford made in italy by the finest shoe maker with the best materials. Does this mean that the nike shoe is bad? No. You wouldn't wear the oxfords to go running would you? The rolex is a more utilitarian watch designed for harsher conditions.

@@Jairseph I disagree with your analogy. I own these watches. The Rolex is like a classic penny loafer. Well built and can go with 90% of what you might wear or do. The Calatrava (not to be confused with PP sport models) are basically like ladies stilettos. Stunning but really only appropriate is VERY specific situations. Any one (including me) who has tried to daily wear a calatrava will tell you don’t. Unless you don’t mind spending a few grand and about 2 months every year servicing the thing. My issue was that this channel thought Rolex was “not worth it”. Fair enough. Lots of folks feel that way. But to turn around and say a PP Calatrava is worth it? Seems inconsistent. Also I don’t think they even had one for the video. I don’t recall any of them wear one. All stock images. I could be wrong.

    Worth it? No.
Probably a little better built than a Seiko, at 100 times the price…

    1. Nothing is heirloom piece. The future is getting simpler, more convenient. Your heir prefers fitbit, smartwatches
    2. Watch out for the word “cost no object”. This is what drives up nouveau riche’s market & put common sense aside
    3. Some nouveau riche said “it’s a conversation piece”. I’d say it’s your personality, your charm, that makes up the conversation. Not the watch, for sure
