      for real, good mention. back when I bought my first plant pack, went to research what they sent (it was a sellers-pick type thing) only to find out some of the species were illegally invasive for my area. got rid of those and generally started being careful with my water change water, if you have terrestrial plants that's one way to use it up though.

    In high school we did the enclosed ecosystem experiment as well, but my teacher forbade getting fish. So instead everyone got mystery snails. By the end of the experiment, she felt so bad for the snails she ended up buying a 10 gallon to house all of them! There must've been 20 or something of massive mystery snails living in there. I don't think she repeated the experiment the following year lol

    Peace lilies arent the same as other lily species in terms of risk to cats and dogs (they are still toxic, but the animal needs to actually consume/chew on the plant rather than simply risk being in the room with the pollen or even water they are kept in). They are also really safe for fish tanks.

    I use a small variety of peace lily in small tanks. Smallest was 5g. Current 7g. There's no way I'd use one in a 1 or 2g container unless I'm prepared to trim the roots regularly. The roots on those things can get HUGE, and it'll fill that container very quickly. Like the fish isn't being short-changed on space. Peace lily won't hurt fish, Chris. Even all the 3rd graders were smart enough to know bettas were carnivores and would eat the plants and algae like the teacher said they would. The first thing that happened in most of the tanks was the snails went missing, then the betta fish. Somehow one betta fish survived in the bowl for 5 months with just snail as food, and won the lucky prize of being raffled to an 8 year old. (the betta fish died in a week of this 8 yearolds care)

    In the early 2000s you could hardly go to a grocery store without seeing a glass vase with a peace lily (often sold as "Betta lily"), and a Betta swimming around the roots. They were really heavily marketed as a complete ecosystem where the plant was supposed to clean the water and the Betta nibbles on the plant's roots. Seemed a bit fishy at the time, and now I see that the only way it ever worked was that Bettas are very good at suffering. Unfortunately the marketing was very successful and most normal people still think that Bettas are decorations because of the whole "Betta lily" thing.

    The more i look up house plant lists for aquariums I can say Yes, peace lilly is on the OK list, but obviously if you have cats or dogs most house plants in your tanks are to your discretion
    *also I'm a dumpster diver and the amount of pet store returns that get tossed have given me plenty free tanks, filters, food, substrate, pet beds, and costumes. It's crazy. And that's just at those stores.

    Here in PA we also have invasive species issues, and farther south in the Chesapeake Bay.
    Locally, there is an environmental education center with a pirhana mounted on the wall. It was fished out of a local lake... because some yahoo had turned their aquarium fish loose when it got too big. They of course would not survive local winters but, still...
    Red eared sliders are an issue here (the native painted turtle is pushed out and competed with by them).
    "There are 200 known invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay watershed like blue catfish, nutria, emerald ash borer and phragmites and 280 invasive plants in the broader Mid-Atlantic region like bamboo, garlic mustard, and Japanese honeysuckle."
    Some of us have been planting native species in our yards, eliminating grass (which is useless unless you're feeding livestock). It helps. You can also volunteer with local organizations who do removal of invasive species.

    A friend ended up with a 5g tank springing a leak when she put it on top of file cabinet (that flexible metal is NOT a solid surface, but she didn't realize that for some reason). The thought of putting something even bigger, much less hanging off like that one photo - nightmare material!

    • @drewzero1
      @drewzero1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My 20 long is on a metal file cabinet, but I bolted a 3/4” sheet of ply on top first to give it a solid base.

    • @emihayashi7725
      @emihayashi7725 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drewzero1 Thank you for sharing, I was about go move my tank onto a metal file cabinet. How do you bolt the plywood onto the cabinet? Mind posting a photo? Will the plywood stay in place without the bolts?

    • @drewzero1
      @drewzero1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emihayashi7725 I used countersunk carriage bolts (drilled holes through the plywood and the cabinet, then drilled larger holes partway through the ply to keep the bolt heads from touching the aquarium). I also put thick rubber washers between the plywood and the metal in an attempt to dampen the vibration. I've since realized it was way overbuilt for a 20 long.
      If I were to do it again, I'd probably skip the bolts and just use some kind of foam/rubber mat under the ply to keep it from slipping. The main thing is that the plywood should be at least slightly bigger than the top of the file cabinet, so the tank's weight is supported by the strong edges instead of the weak middle of the file cabinet's top. It's been a few years so I'll have to look and see if I have a photo from when I was setting it up.

      @emihayashi7725 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drewzero1 Thank you for the detailed description of the ¾" plywood attachment. I see it in my mind's eye without your photo. Yes, vibrations and jolts from opening and closing the file drawers might become an issue. Think I'll search for a wooden file cabinet or chest of drawers instead

    I have a severe allergy to team sports (school trauma, yeay!) but there are plenty of outdoor sports one can have fun with:
    ones I've done:
    Horsemanship, training wild mustangs, training goats. A couple decades of running small sled dog teams (bike-joring, urban mushing, easy with one or two dogs). Whapping lorge dudes upside the head with broadswords as a swordbroad (back in the day as a living history buff). Hiking. Kayaking. More kayaking. Solo kayaking. kayaking kayaking kayaking.
    Lying in a creek with a wetsuit and mask and snorkel amusing tubers floating by... (personal wild fish study.... ooo look a tthe giant honkin crayfish!). Learned something about the behavior of my fathead minnows in my aquarium and garden ponds. In the creek (Yellow Breeches in PA) they stayed near the bottom and worked the rocks (dodging in and out among them looking for food) in a ripping current I could barely walk against. Snorkeling is easy and accessible. You can also build simple underwater viewers to explore your local waters. Scuba is also fun.
    But the best: be a mermaid.

    Funfact, the idea of the fishbowl came from China. Though it was a ceramic bowl that was only used to temporarily display fish. People from Europe thought the fish lived there full time so started doin that with goldfish.

    To be fair, we do know that nymphaea are fine for aquariums. So odds are the peace lily would be fine. Doesnt make the setup good. No water oxygenation, no substrate feeding, improper column feeding, etc

    Peace lilies are totally fine for fish tanks, lots of aquascapers use them when they have terrestrial plants sticking out of their tanks. It’s probably the most commonly suggested plant to do that with next to pothos. They’re not actual lilies of the kind that are toxic. Have to admit….I’ve wished the Cheeto container was glass so I could aquascape it…it is a nice size 😂

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally wouldn't put much in one of those Cheetos containers, but that being said... If you don't mind the hassle of removing the food residue, because it is a serious hassle with most plastic products ngl, and keep in mind that those things are pretty damn flimsy so you wanna be really careful about putting pressure on them from the outside, they're not actually bad for housing inverts and plants, I have one that's only half filled that I've had for 2-3 years that i just put mud and water I collected from outside in and it's been fun seeing some tiny species of water beetle live in there for a good 2yrs but I haven't checked recently if there's any this year. This is closed btw, which is good because when it was first setup it had mosquitoes, but the branches sticking outta the water i stuck moss to ended up being the perfect spot for a spider to move in when i left it open for a bit so the winged pests didn't last long. I kinda miss the spider now but it disappeared a long time ago... ^^'

    Did the cheese ball container for a Betta. Worked FANTASTIC. Also had a filter, real plants, and substrate. Got a 50% wc every week with every other tank (the actual tank cracked. It was either the cheeseball container or death. I chose the cheeseball container.)
    It can be done, and it can be done nicely.
    I will agree though, not the peace Lilly... just, no. Stop. Get aquatic plants.

    Peace lily are not toxic to fish. Basically no toxic plant is toxic to fish. The reasons most plants are toxic to mammals are compactly irrelevant to fish shrimp and almost anything aquatic you will be keeping. There are some specific plants that are toxic to fish, and the only times you would ever encounter them is if you have an outdoor pond, or if you are doing aquaponics with tomatoes. Avoid tomatoes growing out of your tank and you will be ok.
