this is so close to my situation. I went to college didnt know what I wanted to be. Graduated with a crappy GPA worked in the pharmaceutical companies for awhile. I decided to take all the required courses to get into nursing school by going to a community college, it took me 4 years to complete this. Because I worked full time and went to school at night and paid for the tuition out of pocket. I ended up taking two nursing entrance exams, Hesi and the ATEAS test. I applied to 30 schools and I got accepted to one. I am currently enrolled in nursing school and I graduate next spring, its hard to believe I have survived this. But if you want something bad enough you will do it.

Probably another piece of advice I can give to other people is when the people in your life does not support the career you want. They do not support your hopes and dreams, I hope you dont listen. Please go after whatever you dream and so passionately want to be. Because I went at this journey alone, I went through a divorce and among other life changing events and I could of stopped in the middle of it all even during nursing school. But I didnt and for alll of those people that were against I will succeed and they can live with the fact they had nothing to do with it, and I will get to live with all the benefits of my hard work. So again if you want something bad enough you will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

I wanted to give another update. I passed my NCLEX on November 2nd. I am officially an RN BSN (nurse). I have gotten a job in the south and moved and started a new job a new career in a new state. I hope my story along with Karlas inspired someone to start this journey.

I am so happy that you still became a nurse! Because that kind of advisor isn't a real advisor, she is supposed to e supportive and help you get to be a nurse. My advisor, when I went to community college, helped me try to get there and got me take the classes I needed to get there. Even though I backed out of community college because it wasn't what I was looking for. I was the same as you after I left, thought I could just work and not worry about school until I realized years later that I do want to be a nurse too so I decided that I wanted to go to vocational school instead!
But everyone is proud of you that you followed your heart and you finally got the career you wanted.
I subscribed to you today and your videos are so helpful, and they inspire me even more! I can't wait to start nursing school and become an LPN! Thank you so much! ❤️🤗

I can relate. Years ago when I attempted my nursing prerequisites my instructor told me to pick a different career. Fast-ward now in my late 20s I stopped letting other people’s opinion direct my future now I’m passing my prerequisites with As and Bs, not to mention my A&P passed my A&P 2 with an A. I apply this fall. My early 20s just wasn’t the right time for me to even be in college lol. But I have also learned the hard way, that no one is you, they don’t know your capabilities, and I stopped letting other people’s opinion based on their own capabilities affect my goals or plans. Yes nursing can be hard for some, but doesn’t mean it will be for someone else. Yes most get rejected from nursing school, but that’s them not you. I wish I had my mentality now back then.

Great video! Your story relates to me and inspires me so much! I started university right after highschool in a program that my parents wanted me to do (biomedical sciences). I had no passion or desire for it and quickly realized the program wasn't for me but due to cultural pressures, I stayed. I spent the next 2 years trying to cope without telling my parents I was failing a lot of courses and wasn't doing well before I finally decided to withdraw and found the courage to let them know (IN MY FOURTH YEAR). I always had a passion for help ing others and knew nursing was what I wanted to do from early on. After getting rejected 3 times into different nursing programs because of my low GPA, I was so close to giving up. My twin sister seemed to be doing so well and felt like I was a let down to my family. Just last week, I woke up to an email saying I finally got accepted into nursing for September 2020. I'm so excited for this new journey! There's 2 things I've learned through this experience- everything happens in it's time and it's never too late to do what you love

Girl, you're literally me. I truly needed this video because right now, I was so indecisive about pursuing a career in Nursing. I've done medical since I was 19 (I'm about to be 24 soon) and I was so discouraged by it. I would take frequent breaks from school and from working in the medical field, but I never saw myself wanting to go for in any other degree. I would always ask myself, "Is this truly what you want to do?" or "Could you actually do this?" And for a fact, it is something I see myself doing for the rest of my life. I was never the best student also but right now I'm busting my ass in school so I can apply to the nursing school of my dreams. Thank you so much Karla for this video, this was literally the inspiration I needed and you truly are an inspiration sis!

I can relate to the advisor story. I’ve been trying to build up my gpa with taking all these pre reqs for nursing and I decided to finally meet up with an advisor to see the next step and she nearly made me cry in front of her. Since it’s community school you don’t have a set advisor (at least for me) so the first one basically told me to do one thing while the one I was seeing now had a whole different plan. She told me that I am no competition to the other students and to just give up at this point. Word for word. Since then my motivation hasn’t been great and that moment is engraved in my head but I am still trying to make it to nursing school. This gave me a little bit of hope

      @karlaholloway7682  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I’m sorry that happened to you. You should use that as a positive thing. I hope you continue with your dream regardless of all the struggles. You can do anything.

I am currently applying for colleges and I got my first denial. I was so hurt and it made me doubt myself even more I have a very low self esteem and I hate it. All of my friends are an A’s student and I am no were near that. There was times were I thought I didn’t fit in with them until now. I can relate so much on this video. My counselor also told me that she doesn’t think I’ll have any chance to be a nurse due to my grades. This video gives me so much hope and faith it also keeps me motivated. Thank you so much.

This is so so inspirational. When I was 5 I remember I used to play doctor on my mom and dad. My mother died at age 8 and that even motivated me even more. I wanted to live for my mom and become what she couldn’t. I went to high school and doubted myself SO much. I thought I was too dumb to even apply. After high school I applied and got in (but their acceptance rate is like 95%) I’m at a community college now and will graduate in Spring 2021. As of right now, it’s just getting myself to finally go!!

your story is so incredible and inspiring to me. I am currently a freshman at a community college and my first semester i literally had no purpose, and i took which ever classes i was suggest to take. I took college algebra (passed with a B), English 120 (passed with an A) and italian 120 which i also passed with an A. I was too afraid to go to a UC because i didn’t want to leave my mom and sister behind but then i realized that i wanted to have a purpose in life. i always knew i wanted to be a nurse since i was 14 but i was scared to commit due to self doubt and a lack of support from my mom. it took me 2 months ago to realize what i truly want for myself bc whichever decision i end up taking will affect ONLY me, not my mom nor anyone. i needed to secure my future and most importantly protect my dream, no matter the sacrifices i have to make. now i know for certain that i want to become a CRNA and i must complete so many pre- requisites before the fall of 2022, because that’s when i plan to transfer to my dream school, UCLA. I have to get into UCLA first and finally submit my application to the UCLA school of nursing program. My counselor also told me that nursing school will be hard and i could sense some doubt in her voice about me getting in but i’m motivated more than ever to prove her wrong and show her that anything is possible if i work extremely hard this year, and so i’m hoping to take 3 summer classes to finish quick and another 4 this fall. 🤍 i know i can do this, but sometimes i doubt myself of whether i’m smart enough and i compare myself to the other transfer students who are competing against me for the position and are most likely more intelligent than i am. I just hope that in the end i end up being accepted into UCLA and the school of nursing. your story touched me unlike any other and now i have twice the encouragement i so looked for and needed. i’m happy that you’re finally where you’ve always wanted to be. wish me luck! 🤍

Hi, Wow!! I am so glad I stumbled upon your video! Girl, this is exactly what happened to me too. I was so excited to see this counselor because she was African American and I instantly felt like she would have my back after I gave her my story. And she said the exact same thing, told me to look into “behind the scenes positions” and “aim lower”….. counselors really have no idea how much power they hold in their words. Thank god my aunt became a counselor at this same school and took me all the way through obtaining my bachelors in Gerontology and now I’m applying for masters in nursing as a Deans Honors student. I almost want to go back and talk to that counselor and tell her not to destroy a person doing their best to succeed.

I am currently going to a university and I’m taking the prerequisite classes for the nursing program I’m trying to get into. I just finished the fall semester with a 3.09 GPA and a cumulative 2.3 GPA. I got a C In anatomy, a B in my anatomy lab class, a B in PSY311 child development, and a A in eng101 . I turned in my application for the nursing program 2 weeks ago and will know something in a few months on if I got accepted or not. If I do get accepted I’ll be starting in August of 2023. The reason my cumulative gpa is a 2.3 is because I attended the same university last year and didn’t do great and didn’t like the major I chose. But i decided to come back in 2022 to decide what It is that I really want to do and it was nursing. I’ve never in my life got a 3.0 on anything and I’m super grateful for it. I always just told myself “stick to the plan you knew it wouldn’t be easy” and I’m doing everything possible to get accepted. Chemistry is my biggest problem. But I plan on doing my best, and praying for good news! Always remember you got this ♥️

Im at minute 6 crying because the same thing happened to me today. Its my first year in college, came in undeclared, had a zoom meeting with my couceler and im telling her how i want to go into nursing. She said those exact words about my transcript. Those grades i worked hard to earn had made me happy but she made them to be low and not enough to even get in. I really cried afterwards and doubted myself but i really want to do this and i will, so i completely relate to this and Im glad to see you still made it even through the hardships.

My story is so similar. I'm a single mom of 4. I teared up watching this because my pain is still so raw. I went on youtube and watched hours and hours of study videos for nursing students, It made all the difference because I never had a study background. My word of advice to anyone out there is to keep pushing. Going to school for something you love gives you such motivation to overcome obstacles. Give this gift to yourselves. Love to you

Omg!! I can relate so much. I did bad in the first few years of college. But I sent my application a week ago, and I’m just telling myself “they will not accept you. There’s no way. Your grades are not acceptable.. Don’t get your hopes up.” 😭😭 I just want to be prepared for the disappointment and heartbreak. Ugh. People tell me I’ve done a lot, that I should be proud, but I still feel like it’s not enough. I doubt myself a lot.

I genuinely finally decided to pursue nursing last month and getting ready for pre-requisites. Part of the reason I am so terrified of nursing is that I don’t think I’m smart enough. In high school I was always a B+ or A student but I am TERRIFIED that I won’t be good enough and I don’t want to hurt anyone in the process. I’m also a DACA recipient so I’ll be paying for school out of pocket or with a personal loan. This video just gave me the strength to keep pushing. Thank you 💜

Cc Counselors are the WORST. I went through the similar process. My first semester of college he told me that with my C in algebra I would not get in. From there it all went downhill my pre-req grades were crap because I thought so negative. And then you have everyone in these clases who had 4.0s and super rude and competitive. I had really good grades in the clases that that weren’t pre-reqs. Once I graduated with my AA I realized that nursing is my calling however with a 3.0 my only way of getting in was a private university. I got in and am starting core in January. I hope to make good grades finally now that I am truly passionate about it. Thank you for your story, you are so incredibly inspirational to me.

You remind me so much of Becky G, so Gorgeous!
I'm a pre-nursing student who is deciding to switch careers so I have no medical experience. I plan on leaving my current job to focus on school and I am taking the biggest leap of faith because I am also a mom/wife who provides for the family. Lately I have been battling whether to follow my dream and go straight for the ADN program at my community college or to take a step back and start off with the LPN program. My area has so many applicants that I know it's already super competitive! I'm wondering if doing a bridge program LPN to ADN might be the best route? The advisors/counselors i've spoken to, haven't been the most encouraging and have made suggestions on looking at other options than nursing. I know with all my heart this is what I want and what I am made to do. I'm trying to stay as positive as possible and trusting God to lead my way.
Good Luck to everyone also on their journey to becoming a Nurse!

Hi Karla! Thanks for your video! Even though this was a while ago, I can relate to this 100%. I knew I wanted to be in the medical field when I went to college but no one really guided me with resources and things so I ended up switching by major like 4 times and ended up graduating with a BA in Spanish because I had a minor in it and could finish my 4 years with it. Don’t get me wrong, I love Spanish and I love how diverse it is but in my 4 years at college, I really wanted to go into the nursing program the end of my sophomore but I was told I couldn’t do it due to my GPA and grades. I’ve been wanting to finish my pre reqs so I can apply for nursing school but idk what holding me back, could be money or just the anxiety of not doing well. I want to start this summer so I can attend nursing school, I always wanted to be in pediatrics because I love kids and growing up, I loved my pediatrician and nurses but your video gives me hope and the guidance I needed. Thank you for that and I hope everything is going well for you still! God bless!
