Richard Balthazar I know so many people who “did what made them happy” and now they are stuck at minimum wage jobs with 3 kids ..... I think people should go to school so they can get a part time job making ok money and use the rest of their time doing what they want honestly

REDD-IVEEE 🗣🗣🗣 Say THAT! Ppl complain so much. Try being BROKE! I can tell some of these ppl haven’t been BROKE before. Get your MONEY. You can really tell what stage in life ppl are in when they say these crazy things abt “do what makes you happy” nah, make your money first then do what makes you happy. Nurses make great money, regardless of how less they FEEL they make, MOST ppl are not making $30-$70 coming off a 2 year degree. Spend a couple YEARS BROKE and your perspective will change.
12 years as a RN. It was never my passion but I needed a way to care for my children because I was going through a divorce with no financial help. It has been so difficult especially the last few years. I’ve started to struggle with depression/anxiety. I’ve had many different roles from floor nurse to Director of Nursing and I’ve hated each equally... all the time crying out to God to help me... fast forward to 1 month ago.. I QUIT!!! I can’t spend 1 more day in that black hole.. I just got accepted to start Flight Attendant training.. way less money but my PEACE doesn’t have a price. I feel you 100%.. Good luck to you!! 😀

Good for you. And please, don't listen to people who try to shame or guilt you into continuing nursing because of the 💰. I have even been harrassed by thirsty neighbors and acquaintances who wish to profit from me by trying to force me to work for their family members who either are ill for free or pennies, or those who run nursing homes, or manage them in order to abuse me. Please avoid these people.
Im an introvert and nursing is so emotionally draining for me. On my days off all I want to do is stay shut up in my room because of how much talking I have to do

Don't you waste both by quitting something you've spent your life trying to achieve? Either way I get it, I just hope all the nurses in the comment sections who also want to quit find a job that's worth it. Especially after all the hassle they went through.
Coolspygirl no, you waste a life by doing something that you hate for 30 years just because you spent 3-4 years in school for it. There are other options in life and just because you choose a path doesn’t mean it has to be your only path for your entire life.

I Think that you should have been given a better advice : do not quit unless you have a back up plan. However if you really can t do something you should leave it. I say this because I suffer from depression and I left university because I was depressed( actually I already was before beginnig it and I had lots of up and down that at the end I was so sad that every part of my body hurt and I couldn t get up from the bed and everything was such a big deal!) . After leaving university however Ì didn t get better, actually I got worse because I didn t have a purpose, I was already ill and I couldn t find a job because I felt so angry, so sad, and suicidal. Every person I met in that period made me angry and I cried every day, and every person who talked to me made me cry...and I nobody was able to help me ( although I took some medicine!). One day my mother decided that I needed a professional help ( actually after the psychiatrist gave me a prescription and suggested I needed help), so I went to a psychologyst and that helped....I know my story in awful, also because I m Sad anyway and I m not going anymore to the psychologyst, so I like "alone", I would like that nobody feels in this way, and I Think that leaving university Played a good role to my health.
"But God"....the arrogance. Why would "He" allow it to happen in the first place if "He" were so powerful? What kind of silly God is this? Black people will stay cursed with this mindset. Most Christian black people's lives are in complete shambles. No accountability.
I remember my professor in my first year in college said to us, that if you went into nursing for the money, you will never be happy. I've been a nurse for more than a decade and all I can say is...she was right.

E U rn Im between being a vet tech and a nurse but honestly I think ima go to vet tech because nursing just came to me as an option when I was narrowing down my careers to my top 5. Like I never really thought about nursing until this year & I don’t want to be miserable and have to end up , quitting my job . Honestly I’m struggling with that rn :( ughhhhh
My Lord!!!!! When you said 'just because you can do something, does not mean that is meant for you', you are preaching it. A law professor said that in a seminar one day & it hit me like an AK 47. He actually said 'just because you can do something, does not mean that you should'. I knew from that day; I was done pursuing law. Now a bachelor and master degree later, I am going to pursue nursing. I have always wanted to be one, and after much prayer, I will do it. God gave me so many signs. Also, I do not think any of my degrees are a waste. Preparation is never a waste of time & God is always on time. Thanks for your story. You will be fine. You are blessed.

The sad thing is that 15 years ago, nurses had to use their brains. And the ones who made A’s in school were the worst nurses bc they were simply good test takers and there is a certain level of intuitive thinking that can’t be taught. Human anatomy may be an exact science, but human behavior is not. And 9 times out of 10 the “I got all A’s, and I never studied!” Types were either flushed out, or wound up failing the NCLEX or went into management.
That’s the problem with nursing today. The ones coming out of school with all A’s and no common sense are taking over as hospitals are requiring bachelors degrees. The ones of us who worked our way up from CNA to bachelors are trying to adjust to the dumbing down of nurses, and trying to keep 22 year olds who have never had a job, but think they know everything, from killing people. Tests prepare you for tests. Experience prepares you for experience.
Beatnik RN interesting point. I recently finished nursing at uni, and my course was different in the sense that we didn’t get many tests at all, just more assignments. Overall I found these to have little benefit. However some assignments, like ones where we critically appraised nursing practice or examined errors/adverse events that we witnessed on placement, I found very useful and insightful. At the end of the day though, nobody really cares about our scores. In fact, in Australia, there’s no NCLEX. Getting into a graduate program is dependent on your clinical performance on placement and your nurse referees - GPA doesn’t make much of an impact. If you don’t do well in one of your final placements, your employment opportunities are shot. Nobody cares about your grades. That’s how I think it should be. All my memorable learning experiences were on the floor as a student.

My mother used to always tell me go to school to make more money. It took me a long time to realize what my school counselor once said, "Do what you like best instead of looking at dollar signs." That is so right. I have quit higher paying jobs that I hated for lower paying ones just to have peace of mind, and this is coming from someone who loves the freedom of having money.

SAME 🙌💛 Been there done that. I've never been happier in my life than I am now and doing what I love here on TH-cam. Started 3 months ago & never looked back. If I had to spend the rest of my life sitting in an empty box doing what I love for free...I probably would. I did the $ things, and I remember that trap. Ideally, it would be good to be able to monetize your passion to make a living at least. But I agree with you, you need to do what serves your heart.

It's weird that I came across your video... as I'm sitting at home tryna figure out what is my purpose in life... what am I passionate about... why am I sitting here letting life pass me by without knowing what/where I want to be? I've always wanted to be a nurse but never pursued it. Instead, I got a Medical Assistant certificate and don't even work in that field. I'm praying and hoping that God will guide me in the right direction. As for you, don't feel bad about it. You deserve to be happy with any career you choose. It's your life :) Thanks for this vid!

I had to decide a career at 17 smh my parents drilled me to be a nurse it wasn't a joke. I just quit my first nursing job after 4 months and told myself to hell with it. I'm not happy at all. My sleep pattern is all kinds of fucked up, I'm breaking out more than ever before, I'm not eating right. I did 12 hr nights at a psych hospital....no. I'm going back to school to become a elementary school teacher best decision of my life. It's what I wanted to do it since I was a kid. I don't care about the pay. It makes me happy and even my professors see me strive in my classes
This right here is why parents need to pay close attention to their children and have very open conversations with them. They want our approval so badly and we have to let them know that as long as they are mentally and spiritually healthy that is there most important goal. The rest will follow.
I am 16 right now and I had to choose A CAREER AT 12. That's the school system in switzerland.
Hindsight is always 20/20. Sometimes you have to make a decision with the little knowledge you have and hope for the best and be willing to adapt.
Lotusflower, you raised a VERY good point. Deciding on a career path at 18 is crazy, and schools should be about giving students experience of various fields, and numerous workplaces.

I’m 44 and feel the same way. I’ve been through burnout to breakdown to just bleakness now. All I ever do anymore is play on my phone and wait for my kids to come home when I am off. I’ve pushed through for so long now that I feel like a part of me has died. Retirement is further away for our generation.
I worked with a nurse many years ago who got so over it, I ran into her sweeping the front door at Walmart. I asked if she was still nursing and she said “only if I have to. I’d rather sweep this floor all day for 9 bucks an hour than go back to nursing. Just waiting 5 more years to retire.”
I lost a lot of hope that day. And that was 6 years ago.
You’ll wake up one day and your whole life has passed you by. No one will ever treat you as well as you treated your own patients, and healthcare will cost twice as much.
It really makes the saying “No good deed goes unpunished” all too real. How many good deeds do you do per shift, and for how many years? It’s a lifetime of punishment.

Tj Guidry you said you work as a waiter now right? And same. I use to be materialistic but as I got older I stopped caring about that stuff and fully realized it has no true value.
I watched this 2 years ago before I started nursing school and even tho I’m graduating this year, I still feel the same. Gonna finish my degree and work enough to pay off my loans. It’s not a lot, thank goodness, and then I’m gone. This is killing my spirit.

I have a shit ton of friends in this boat and they do not want to admit it, they are only in school for nursing and/or only working as nurses for the money they have ZERO passion or common sense. At least you are honest enough to say you were wrong and that is all that matters!

Perhaps you need to be in a different type of nursing. There is so much more than Hospice, working in a hospital on a floor or wing, more than a nursing home, respite care center, or retirement center for that matter. There are positions with private doctors, nurses who do home care, others work with pediatricians, & there are school nurses too. MOF, I lived in this state many, many years ago after I was born then again while I was in school. After I moved back many years in the future after saying I'd never live in this state again, I did but I moved here because the man I had been dating & who had made the drive to see me more times than I can count or even remember on top of the times we 'met in the middle' and just got a hotel room b/c it was cheaper & we could each be back home sooner with less of a drive... we had grown close & our relationship deepened over time. He owned his business & with the type it was, he couldn't just pick up and move to a new state in a metropolitan city. Even if wanted to move his business, he couldn't get work where I lived b/c it was in a large city & the type of work he did wasn't done there, so I moved to be nearer to him to find out if we had any chance of making it last. We did & we have. My career was really fluid allowing me to work anywhere. After I went to work in this area and later decided to go back into an office, the corporation's in-house nurse turned out to be the school nurse of a school I attended more than 2 decades earlier! I had sent for my school records & wanted to make sure I had them all so I had my records sent from every school in every state I had attended. One night while going through them all, I found my friend & company nurse... I made a copy of the document with her signature & brought it with me the day after. We both had a great laugh about it. Now she was a corporate nurse but good at her job & she enjoyed it b/c it wasn't around sick people all the time, though she did give flu vaccines every year. I'd even go into the office to get mine.
I guess what I'm saying is this: It sounds like you love people. I've been around enough nurses in my life to know when a nurse absolutely hates the work & you don't sound like you hate the work; it's like you don't care for where you are working per se. Maybe you need to find a different way of doing what you do best.
After my oldest daughter wasn't happen with the way things were going, she began taking classes at the hair college (It is a Paul Mitchell school), she eventually took all the classes needed & went thru the lab time too then graduated, went for her state licensed, got it, & began working as a hairdresser but still worked in medicine & kept going to college. Today, she does hair at a respite center, does nursing at the respite center so many days a week, then takes care of an elderly woman who still lives in her home a few days a week, & she has created time to be more of a presence in her step-daughter's life, esp after she came to live with my daughter & her husband. Now my daughter doesn't have & doesn't want children; they can't have children b/c her husband had surgery to take care of that so they're on the same page & happy; hwr, there are no diapers, no chasing a toddler or being up all night putting an antsy stubborn terrible two back in his or her bed, but she does enjoy being a stepmother & being able to help this young girl get her life straight & work hard in school while, as a family, working on any & all remaining issues.
My daughter has a full life but it's one she has made to fit the things she likes to do. Part of that is working as a hairdresser in the respite center, which makes it so she enjoys what she does even more & the break between in-house hairdresser for the center, working at the center, working in private care, and working at a salon where she oversees other hairdressers while also working herself just fulfills her life too.
Life really is what you make it. I hope you find what you are seeking.
Your daughter & mine could be sisters. :) My (oldest) daughter loves medicine too. I think her ability to cross so many avenues of directly & indirectly serving as a caregiver thru the medicine at a respite care facility, as a hairdresser within the same respite care center, & thru her volunteer work where she comes in 1-2 or so times a month (across 2 of the center's facilities & sometimes she is able to come back to the 3rd that is near my home/her childhood home) where she comes out to sing to the residents. Bless her heart she even goes to the extent of doing her hair, nails, makeup, and dresses in period pieces & evening gowns to make it more special. Over the past few years, she opted to take on private duty, tho the elderly woman who hired her wasn't a stranger when she was offered the job. She knew her thru other residents (the company directs employees to call them clients rather than residents or patients) she has known for years. About the only sub-specialty she doesn't work is with Alzheimer's patients. In the beginning, it was more b/c she was fearful of Alzheimer's patients b/c the first patients she cared for with Alzheimer's were in the combative stage. Later, she came to understand & know in her head that the only reason people in this stage get like this is b/c they are more afraid of others than others are afraid of them. She's seen it first hand with a family member & a few aging friends who had/have the disease so she was able to witness the changes from the mildest of symptoms to the most severe where even the glimmer of recognition was gone. It's just one aspect of nursing care she doesn't want to work in with good reason.
It seems like we moms have the same great ideas. LOL! I did the same with my girls. The youngest doesn't want to work in medicine; hwr, there is a flicker of caregiver in the peripheral. She has always wanted to with women who have to fight for right to learn & live despite culture & religion. It has a lot to do w/why she chose cultural anthropology w/focus in middle eastern studies. Both girls have grown up supporting & fighting for those who have few to fight for them or with them. My husband & I chose to send the girls to public school (we have an excellent school district) while also home-schooling. It's given them the best foundation. I've fought with multiple (4 types) autoimmune diseases and damages they have caused to my body so I can definitely understand your extensive knowledge of the medical language. (I have a retinal disease w/optic nerve damage too; lost my license to blindness more than 2 decades ago, but I still retain light perception w/some clarity if one can call looking thru drinking straws w/saran wrap over the ends clarity... lol!) And you are so right on the point that automation will never take away our daughters' career. My MIL, other family members, & I have said the same many times too. It's about the best job security of any other field out there. I know I keep numerous specialty fields in business, as I'm sure you do as well. So sorry to hear about your accident. My oldest was t-boned too but thankfully the hit wasn't anywhere close to what you sustained. You are lucky to be alive! About a month before I was to meet my father-in-law for the first time, he was in a multi-vehicle pile up on the interstate. He wasn't able to stop before rear-ending a dump truck as the truck driver was trying to avoid the vehicle in front of him & in front of that one, etc... He died on impact and thru sheer divine providence, his wife (2nd wife; he moved out west & remarried after he & my MIL divorced, which is why it was about 10yrs before the chance came up to finally put into motion possibly meeting him) somehow survived though how is unbelievable. Sadly, she had to be put into a medically-induced coma to give her any chance of survival & even that sliver was tiny. It was almost a year before she had any knowledge that her husband died. While I was sad for my husband & his brothers, their kids & ours, I was happy for his stepsons. At least one of them survived. Best wishes & gentle hugs.

I have been a nurse for 5 years and I am quitting my job in 2 weeks to start classes to get certified in IT and get a better career. I hated most days as a nurse and it has been the least fulfilling idea of mine ever.

I was an RN for 20 years. Nursing is an art and a calling, I feel like I often hear it as a "default" profession. "I guess I'll just go to nursing school". Nursing school is hard to get into in most instances, and it is far harder to actually work as one. Even for those of us who love the profession, it is physically and emotionally draining to a level that many people will not understand. Nursing is not tasks or skills ultimately, it is clinical judgements made under very stressful circumstances. I don't believe any degree is wasted, and people get degrees in fields they don't end up working in all the time. I applaud you for being true to yourself, and I hope you find your long term passion as a career.

BBB41414 You said that eloquently. I left the hospital due to politics, red tape, bureaucracy, grip of insurance and Big Pharma etc..in other words too much BS! But I still cared for patients just not in the hospital...and I loved the hospital!!
I had a professor in college who in her last year of residency to be a doctor, decided she did NOT want to be a doctor anymore. I couldn’t believe how much courage she had to quit so close to the finish line, and she loves teaching and doesn’t regret it.- one of my best professors ever.

Thank you for sharing this! I’m one semester away from getting my RN and I’m about to quit. I love patients so much but the politics, shitty instructors, and emotional abuse from my school isn’t worth it. I felt stupid at first for giving it up now, but better than wasting my lifetime unfulfilled! Now I’m off to pursue a degree in social work.

Don’t let anyone call you a quitter either- because you haven’t quit, you redirected your path ! Spend time with wih the Lord and ask him in prayer what his purpose is for your life. Because his plans for our lives are bigger than our plans . it's says in the Bible to desire the Lord and he shall give you the desires of your heart.
This is true, and as a believer, I just feel that maybe everyone on Earth does not have a purpose. Some people like me are just losers with no calling, God does not send us a good husband, and we are just odd ball loner types. I think my purpose is to just be here working some dead end job until I drop dead. It sounds grim, but it is true. I quit nursing after 12 years. It’s truly a thankless job. You do not make enough money for all the responsibilities you have. Constantly worrying about losing your license over countless things. It was not worth it to me. It took me years to actually quit even though I knew I wanted to. Once I quit, it was so freeing. I always get asked if you were a nurse, why do you work here? People don’t get how hard becoming a nurse is & how miserable of a job it can be. I still pay student loan debt to this day. Listen to your intuition and follow your dreams. No regrets!

I think these comments let you know you are not alone. I spent 26 being miserable and abused in nursing. Spending my day off feeling awful and sick over the thought of having to go to work the next day. Many times I looked for jobs outside of nursing, but the pay wasn't as good, so I stuck with it. Seven months ago God put me in a spot we're I didn't have a choice. I have been in customer service ever since and excelling. People asked why I left nursing for customer service and they never believe the answer "to get away from the abuse." I recently went out with a couple of former coworkers, when I told them how well I was treated by my current employer, the looks on their faces reminded me why I had left. They were in shock and disbelief that your employer and coworkers would treat people like mine do. Yes, I make less money, but I am happy and content. For the first time in my adult life I am not hating going to work.

Omg, I have my degree in health administration and my true passion and when I tell people at my job that I want to become an airline pilot they say that I’m better off as a flight attendant, or what am I gonna do with my degree, and all types of negative remarks, trying to get me down and change my mind. i graduated a few years ago in accounting and finance from one the nations top Us business schools and was working for Goldman sachs. i am making over 100k but it has literally sucked the life out of me. I could not see myself doing this for another year and will be putting in my resignation after tax season and pursuing what i always wanted to do which is computer programming. 😁

Consider esthetics. Nurse estheticians are in demand. And you can even have your own non-invasive spa if you want. I am a certified Myotonologist (BSN). If I wasn't 61, it's what I would do.

I had an instructor tell me that they hope I stay and pursue a nursing career, that I would be really really good at it, they see me as a nurse; even my colleagues and friends say I would be really good at it. I was able to get a foot in the door to see how the business, politics, and ethics play a role in the position. I loved my coworkers and the place I worked at. I loved the feeling of being there for the patients and their families. I loved the money I was making. But there’s so much more to it than that and for me, the cons outweighed the good. Luckily, I’m still young and have no kids to take care of so a path change won’t take too much of a toll. Now I just need to find what it is I’m really called towards. NurseJen Keep with it! I love my nursing job and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made with my life. That being said, if you find it’s not for you, don’t feel bad about leaving the profession. Everyone has different passions, so if you truest feel passionate about nursing, you will do just fine. It’s such an amazing field and it’s such a cool job! Some days I feel like I’m fighting the grim reaper to save a life, other days I’m celebrating someone beating cancer or crying with them as they tell me about their struggles with addiction. Be kind, be understanding, always try and put yourself in your patients’ shoes. If people are mean or angry ask yourself how you might feel- empathize with them, let them know you’re on their side- you make a lot of strong connections with patients and family that way. I am no longer happy in this profession. My passion has changed. I’ve gave my all and I have nothing else to give to this profession. I too left my nursing career behind. It took me almost 8 years to realize that the only reason I went into the medical field was because I was told most of my life that that was the most stable job you could ever have in this day and age, and that I wouldn't make enough money and would never be happy doing what I originally wanted to go to school for, which was becoming either a veterinarian or a vet tech. SOMETHING TO HELP ANIMALS. I cared too much about what my elders and peers thought, and I gave up my dreams in order to become a nurse for fear of ending up a "failure." I let other people brainwash me and I don't know why!!! While I was in nursing, I was actually REALLY good at it, but I woke up every morning dreading my work day before it even started and for some reason it took years and years for me to realize that it didn't make me happy. It was like I was on autopilot. It was very hard to quit and leave nursing/medical field behind because like I said, I had been brainwashed into thinking my dream job was a losers job that wouldn't get me anywhere. I am now trying my hardest to go after my dream of helping animals and everything finally feels right in my life. If a job doesn't make you happy, it's not worth the money or the benefits.
Life is short and I would advise anyone who is unhappy in whatever you are doing to get out..Life is to short to be miserable...

I’ve been a nurse for 7 years! Started off as a Medical Assistant then a phlebotomist and then BSN. What upsets me about nursing is the black nurse can never be the nurse I am always assumed to be the “aide, or housekeeping”. I’m questioned more often about what I know then others. I’m always expected to do more or accept a higher workload or more complex patients that others don’t want to accept. I am expected to work through lunch and stay late more. I see black patients being treated as if pain doesn’t exist, we don’t get depressed, we don’t have anxiety or fears about surgery, recovery, discharge, new diagnosis etc. I wonder why many doctors, nurses and the world feel this way?

They are always looking at the black folk to fix situations with other black patients when they can easily just treat them like everyone one in the dang building.

When you realize while watching a video about ignoring signs that you yourself are ignoring the same signs.
You did the right thing. I just walked away after 22 years. Got tired of the politics, negative co-workers, unappreciative families and doctors. You walking away early is going to lead to a happy life. I couldn’t because I had a family and responsibilities. As a result I feel like I have wasted a lot of my life, but I was determined to not end my life being miserable and working in a very negative environment. Let me give everyone something to think about. Average age expectancy is 84 years old. Say you are presently 30 years old. That means you have about 54 years left to live on average. If you sleep 8 hours a day that is 18 of the 54 years that you will be sleeping, so you have about 36 years to work and enjoy yourself and everything else. If you work only 40 hours a week then out of the 36 years, approximately 12 years will be spent working. Now you are left with 24 years. Say you are showering, grooming and commuting 2 hours a day. That is approximately 5 years out of your life. Now you are down to 19 years to really live your life out of 54 years. This is why it is absolutely necessary that you love what you are doing. Your daily activities is what you are trading your life for, so we all need to constantly be vigilant of our time and happiness and say “no” to everything else.
And how pray sir, are you gonna pay for 54 years of doing exactly what you want, any time you want?

I would consider looking into other hospitals. Good coworkers mean the world and can drastically change your opinion of the profession for better or worse. Nurses do eat their young sadly which is why you need to show them that you're better than them. Walk in those doors with your chin up and show them how you are not intimidated by their behavior. @mun flawless Yes but you will be required by law to put in some hours of work and pay the fees for all renewals. This will all depend on the state you live in and their laws. You may have to call the Board of Nursing in your state to get the right answers.

Even if you do feel called to do nursing. Outside forces (management, government, hospital policies) can wear on you and make you feel like nursing was a mistake. Not everyone who quits nursing primarily went into it for the money
I know you regret it...your degree does not have to be a waste. You can make use of the degree in ways you may not have expected. Maybe non-clinical nursing like working for research companies as a nurse researcher...or writing...cosmetic dermatology...you don't even have to touch another patient again if you don't want to. It just seems like a waste to leave the profession and the years invested. But if you absolutely don't want any part of nursing...I support your decision with love. Nothing wrong with your decision. All the best in your career. When you find your passion or your path run like the wind girl.

Most people just go into nursing for the title , the bragging rights & money but they walk around angry at the patients , have no bedside manners, and seem to hate their jobs. But to be honest, it seems to be an issue in a lot of fields.. Teachers are leaving their professions, nurses, social workers.. it’s really strange, what’s really going on? @@Erinspeedy It’s not a judgement it’s an observation. Many professions nowadays seem to be saturated with angry people. I want to chalk it down to financial struggle and general degradation of life for the middle class but I also want to be 110% certain that this is the reason or at least the main reason for their anger. There could be other factors adding to this but yeah unfortunately people these days seem the most angry they’ve ever been.

I am an experienced RN and was in your shoes at the beginning of my career. People who are not in the field will never understand. Please don’t give up. Continue to seek nursing positions in specialties that appeal to you. Also look into Advanced degrees and certifications. You will find your joy and peace in nursing. Hugs from RN to RN.

This young lady is saying this profession is not for her and she's telling her to look for specialty in the field or go own to graduate level. She says the field isn't not meant for her and this person is telling her to go on to graduate level possibly Nurse practitioner or whatever. It's been 3 years when you wrote this comment but it's still relevant. I want to quit nursing school but I was pressured by my family and I graduated on a field who doesn't bring me any joy and I felt miserable and guilty because I didn't like it. When you graduate from high school you have little time to think what is the right path to chose.

This was me! I’m an LPN I have my associates in nursing. I failed the nclex RN 3 times. I only went to school so that I can make “good money”. I use to love helping my patients and they loved me, but I hated going to work! Ever since I was 15 I hated having a job, thought it would be different making more money!! I would get different nursing jobs hoping to feel better, I still hated it. I quit fall of last year! I am SO HAPPY AND FREE! I created a TH-cam channel which I love! I sell on EBay an Poshmark. It’s not as much money just yet, but I’ve never felt so relieved! I can’t imagine working in a career that I absolutely hate! I know God has a plan for my life!!!

I am a nurse and loved nursing and always wanted to be a nurse. I loved being a nursing student although it was the hardest thing I had ever done up to that point. But when I graduated, passed the NCLEX and got into the real world it was completely different than what I had expected. I have worked in different specialties of nursing and all of them that required direct patient care was terrible. The way nurses are treated in the hospital, nursing homes and home care is the worse. It was rare that I got the support that I needed to care for my patients when thing were in disarray. I encourage anyone that want to get into nursing to think long and hard and shadow nurses in various settings before making the final decision.

I’m sitting in the break room right now trying to hold my tears in because I really want to just quit! I became a CNA in 2018, finished nursing school last June (2021) and now I’m working in LTACH. Working in a pandemic showed me that mgmt doesn’t give a damn and these old nurses really do eat their young. My day went like this: I took an assignment and I found out that at 11:30 that there was no charge nurse. I asked the other nurses who were charge and they just looked at me. So I asked again. No answer. Ok so knowing that I’m 2 months in, they were trying to force CN on me. I called DON now she’s here. It really sucks. I was hoping for a rewarding career but this is not it.

How are things now?
I’ve been an LPN for three years now and I’m no longer interesting in furthering my career to be an RN. I’ve realized that this isn’t my passion and this career is affecting my mental health so much. I’m aware every career has stress. But what I experienced as a nurse was too much. It is not worth it at all. I love videos like these because it shows me that I’m not alone. Just a tip for any young person going into a field because their parents pushed or groomed them to be a nurse, doctor etc. Don’t do it. Follow your passion. At the end of the day, those pressuring you to go into the field aren’t living your life. They don’t know the stress, depression or anxiety you may go through. Live for you.

But the few patients you have in school, it doesn't prepare you for taking care of 40 patients. Im an LPN and I 100% agree. I used to get pressured from everyone around me to get my RN but something in the back of my mind was telling me it’s just not the right move at the moment. Thank you for sharing your story! I am an RN and currently possess licenses in LPN & RN. I have been practicing nursing as an RN for the past 16 years. I LOVED nursing, but lately, with all the changes in healthcare, the short-staffing, disrespect (from patients/families & administration) and unappreciated for the work we do, it has become harder and harder for me to go into work. I pray everyday for a "good day," but FOR ME, it just seems like there is always a challenges. At this point, I just feel "burnt out." I WOULD like to continue nursing, because I DO love nursing, just not what I am doing RIGHT NOW. I work on a fast-paced, high stress and high turn-over medical/surgical unit. The demands are so many and increasing, but they want you out on time, irregardless of what type of day you had, the short-staffing or how high the nurse:pt ratio was....AND they give you grief for any "incidental" overtime you end up doing, blaming it on poor time management. I'm praying for guidance right now and an open door of opportunity for a position and area of nursing that God wants me in. By the way, my grandmother, who is a devout, born-again Christian told me that, "The Lord" told her to tell me to not take this current position, but I was unhappy at the previous job and wanted to leave and was disobedient. I'm suffering for it now! Let's pray for one another my sister!

I'm in tears right now, my whole entire family is counting on me to go to nursing school and i'm going along with it but deep down inside I know that I don't want to do that. I actually got into a great nursing school last year but something happened and i had to completely stop. I believe that was a sign from God but then got brainwashed again by my family to the point where I started believing that even God wanted me to be a nurse but that's not the case. Girl. I am CRYING. I have and am still going through the same exact thing that you've been through. I did nursing to make my family and friends happy. I did nursing because it was expected of me, particularly in my culture. I had no passion about it and I remember just like you, i'd sit in my nursing classes and watch my classmates' eyes light up about nursing and I just remember being so empty, so lost, so upset. I would go home many days after class and just close my door and sleep. Just like you, I kept saying to myself, God if i fail this semester, it must mean you don't want me to be a nurse. But semester after semester, I'd pass (but barely) and now, I'm currently a working nurse. I've transferred from one unit to another in hopes of it "getting better" but it hasn't. And again, just like you, I'm putting on this facade in front of everyone around me saying that I love my job when I really don't. I dread every day that I wake up for work. Thing is, if I quit my job, I don't know what I'd want to do. I have a lot of interests but I don't know which interest to make a job out of. I pray that God has led me to your video for a reason. I'm quitting today after 4 months of doing psych as a new grad. I had 10 patients to take care of and most were aggressive males. Plus they told me I had to do charge nurse duties. Plus, it's not giving me any experience other than stare at a computer and almost get hit by patients. It was the only job presented to me at the time and it's night shift too 12 hr. Ever since I started night I've not been the same my body is so confused and I haven't slept well in 2 weeks. I had to give it up I couldn't do one more night anymore. I tried days it was even worse I wasn't improving at all on top of that. Quitting was hard at first but it was well worth it. I know I'll find another hospital job but for me I couldn't take going to a unit almost every day where most of the nurses looked down on me as some incompetent weak link. It was humiliating and embarrassing. I had to be honest with myself that I was simply no good at the job. It's not worth it. As a new grad, if you know you won't make it 6 months get the hell out early especially when you're still on orientation.

When I feel like quiting hear my patients tell me how thankful they are reminds me of what I came here for but that's really 2% of the entire day. Well for me at least

Girl you just ripped my heart out and stomped on it. This was literally me in 2015--almost word for word. I went into nursing because I came from a medical family and it seemed like the right thing to do. I only did well in school subjects I found personally interesting, which is why I didn't go the med school route. The pre-reqs were going to be so boring, I'd never have gotten the grades required to get into med school. So I went with nursing because I knew at least the classes would be interesting. I really enjoyed nursing school, but around my senior year it hit me that I liked nursing SCHOOL, but was going to hate being a nurse--but by that point, I was already three years in and it was too late. To make matters worse, I'd taken a second part time job my senior year with an airline and was like oh shit--I love this... I don't know that I'll ever love nursing as much as I love this... So I finished out nursing school, and like you, graduation day was one of the saddest of my life. I felt SO crap.
I didn't apply straight away to nursing jobs because I was also a competitive dancer and wanted to see if I could get into a touring show for a bit, just to get it out of my system before committing to real life. Well that screwed the pooch, because a year later, no one would hire me as a new grad nurse, who'd been out of school for a year. I ended up having to move states to get a job, and it turned out the job was a profit-driven (even though it was a non-profit, research hospital) hell hole. I lasted a year of having to supply my car with tissues to accommodate my crying on the way home every night before finally admitting I was just straight up in the wrong field. I had to go through all the phases you talked about... Grief, embarrassment, having to defend my decision to everyone I knew, being told I just hadn't found the "right" nursing job, etc. It sucked so hard.
In the end, it was worth it. I got re-hired by my airline, and now, five years later, I'm knee deep in a Masters of Aerospace Management program and I couldn't be happier.
Moral of the story is, if it feels wrong, it is wrong. Stop and think before you waste literal years of your life.

I believe you have been called to reach the hearts of people. Take your time, pray without ceasing, and walk the pace that God has set for you. It may take some time, but you will surely get there. Use this time to get closer to God. I've had some days where i felt so stuck, but I knew that to receive my breakthrough I had to seek the Lord. I am so proud of you for making this video. It is so crazy to me how I came across this video when I’m literally trying to figure out what I’m going to do with my life. Initially I wanted to go into the field of nursing honestly because of the money, helping people, and flexibility but recently doing more research about the downsides of nursing, I don’t know if it’s for me. I feel as though my parents are trying to persuade me to continue and pursue a career as an RN mainly because of the pay but I’m so confused. I don’t want to be stuck doing something that I will not enjoy for the rest of my life just because of high pay. Especially knowing that nurses have to do so much 😪😭

I can relate to this 100%. I didn't even start nursing school because of these same reasons. I've always known deep in my heart that nursing wasn't for me but so many people in my family are nurses so it was more-so like a "it's only right" kinda thing. But i couldn't go through with it. Just looking forward into my life, I knew I would be unhappy and miserable going to a job I hated everyday. I knew I wouldn't feel fulfilled but I was going through the motions anyway to make my family happy. As I finished my pre req's and was getting ready to apply to the nursing program I just had an honest conversation with myself and decided not to apply. After that I took about a year off to just find myself a little bit. I read, I isolated myself from everyone just so I could get a clearer understanding of myself,I wrote, I and I took up dance, something I've always wanted to do. I feel like everyone looks at me as I'm a failure or I'm a bum because I'm 27 and I don't have anything solid yet. I've also tried other projects that haven't quite worked out yet. But it's like you said, you honestly just have to find what your passionate about and figure out what's going to make you happy which is the hardest part. Your going to have to try, fail, try, fail until you figure it out. I feel like so many of us have be kinda brainwashed into a routine kinda life and we never really thought outside the box or some of us have been taught that outside the box was a bad thing. Most of us don't even know ourselves or know what makes us happy. Most of us have been taught that entrepreneurship, or if your career isn't bringing in a certain amount of money per year then your a loser. Anyway, I think it's really commendable of you to show your honesty. I hope you continue to find yourself and I hope you find your passion. It's never too late to start over ❤ Never give up!

I too have a degree in nursing that I'm not currently using though for different reasons but many a nights I came home feeling exactly like this thinking I can't do this for the next 40 years. There were aspects I really loved but many I didn't. Good. For. You. Making a choice to be happy in your life. Don't feel bad though, you gained so much experience in this journey so it wasn't really a mistake but a valuablle life lesson that will make you stronger and more connected. This is why I'm unschooling my kids, so they find their passions and nuture their unique gifts and don't feel like they have to live their lives jumping through someone else's hoops! L wood have you tried schools that have a multi-criteria process? Those schools look at not just grades alone, but patient experience too, such as at work or volunteering experience. Since you're a CNA, that can really work to your advantage! And you're certified, extra points for you! If you also have a previous degree, that counts for extra points too. Don't give up!

Quitting my NURSING CAREER COMPLETELY, despite being the best in the class and been well paid, , is the BEST thing I have done to myself. It was not easy though, but am so glad I set myself free.

For those who got their RN and have clinical experience you can become a nurse reviewer for an insurance company and make decent money. Just something to consider...it doesn't all have to be direct patient care

A nurse once told me that there is no nursing shortage. She said that if all the nurses that quit came back there would be no shortage. Nurses burn out in about 5 years. I’ve met nurses that shouldn’t be nurses....you made the right choice! God Bless!
Nursing has got to be one of the worst jobs ever, it's like constant babysitting sick people! I am happy for you that you stopped lying to yourself and are willing to make the leap to something else.
