I’m a new grad NICU nurse. If I could tell nursing students anything it would be to focus more on the knowledge that you gain rather than your grades.
Once you graduate no one cares if you got straight As or all Cs. In fact ALOT of experienced nurses say C students make the best nurses because typically those students have a better grasp on the content they just don’t test well.
I did NOT get straight As & I was the ONLY new grad nurse in my class to be offered a job in a level IV NICU. Test anxiety ALWAYS got the best of me during nursing school BUT I passed boards on the 1st try.
Do NOT compare yourself to your friends or other students just study hard & give it your best shot. Good luck to you all. Keep your heads up & do not give up!!!!! ❤️

When I was in nursing school I studied with a group of 3-4 girls and we would compare our test grades/ tests after the exam to see where we went wrong and essentially had a study session of 3-4 girls with the teacher comparing all of our exams. It was very helpful and not competitive at all.

I have been working as a CNA for 3 years and I'll be starting my first year of nursing school this September. Your second tip reminded me of the time when I was practicing CPR on my 2ft tall stuffed animal. It seemed silly but it helped. @@Alaynahh It is EXTREMELY worth it! I'm about to enter my 2nd semester of my BSN program, and I've been a CNA for 4yrs. Everything we went over my first semester in clinicals, was stuff I already knew from being a CNA/CMA (medication aide). It helped me tremendously, and its also a huge confidence booster when you already know the stuff and can perform it properly. Also, it gets you comfortable with talking to patients before you start school. Talking to patients is a learned skill.

Hey ya'll! Another tip that will help you get comfortable with medical terminology and patient interaction: work in a hospital if you can! I'm working as a patient transporter, and I always offer to help nurses and CNAs (no matter how dirty the job-literally). I'm building important relationships, and because I'm a helpful person to go to, they are happy to answer my questions, show me things, and explain what they are doing. I'm still pre-nursing, but this is making a world of difference. I plan to do transport for at least a year, then move up to CNA and eventually, RN! Thank you for these tips!

I struggle with comprehension and so I get a lot of extra help, extra time on exams. My school also provides multiple resources for students. They provide a coach who helps you with studying, time management, anything that you struggle with, they also have tutors that you can see once or twice a week for the semester, and an app you can download on your computer that you can take notes on it and it records the lecture. You just have to sign up for it before the semester, which I did!

Finishing up my AS in spring 2022. Starting nursing in between then and fall 2022. I’m excited but nervous given the fact I started at the worst time, during the pandemic. Everything was online. I graduated back in 2011 and having to start over and learn all of this information over again by myself was very difficult. I just hope as I go into nursing school I can gradually adapt to the environment and learn more easily. I’m so intimidated. 😩

Coronavirus really screwed me up. I was supposed to do L&D and Adult 2 but, now we are online for everything. Last term starts in July hoping to see the inside of the hospital.

How is your program going? 😊 And, did you have medical experience prior to starting school? Like CNA, PCT, Medical assistant, etc...
I have my bachelors (non-nursing) and considered RN-MSN, but have a really low cuml gpa. I'm starting an Associates RN program next month, Jan 21', then I'll bridge to at least my BSN. & I dont have any medical experience. I'm nervous but ready 😩😬

Hello I am currently in my 3quarter of nursing school and medical terminology is essential to better understand all the courses. Thank you so much for sharing this video it really is not explained in nursing school how important it is. This video is tremendously helpful and hope you keep sharing.

There cannot be enough emphasis on practice questions. You really do have to forget everything you knew about answering academic questions because NCLEX-style questions are presented at face value with the expectation that YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT ELSE you have to critically consider to get to the correct answer without being given every bit of information you'd actually have in a real-life situation. You have to draw from your knowledge to fill in the gaps for each specific scenario. It's so hard to explain in a way that gives a full picture of what that process is like.
Learning to answer questions is as hard (it was for me, at least) as learning the patho behind disease processes and takes discipline. You have to actively think critically, as in, make a concerted effort, repeatedly until it becomes second nature. I struggled for all of foundations and the first few weeks of med surg 1 at doing this before I started to get it. It's the biggest thing to overcome because you have to remodel your reasoning skills and the way you approach problems in order to read a situation and respond appropriately as a nurse (as opposed to a non-nurse). That's what these questions are aimed at doing. NCLEX review books are invaluable.
Good luck to you as you finish up! I'll finish in August (2020) so I have a little way to go.
And good luck to any future nursing students here. Nursing school will push you to your limits (regularly) but if you know without a doubt this is what you want to do, and you can keep yourself grounded and focused when the hard moments come around, the payoff is better than you can imagine.

The last one I totally agree on. I just finished up my CNA and in my clinicals, once I checked off on something, I was always running around for something to do. I was always asking the CNAs that worked there "what do you need help with?" I don't know if it was the willingness to learn or my ADD, but I learned a lot!

  • @ldetillion

One of the best ways to prepare yourself and get a grounding is getting your CNA/SRNA and working as a tech if/when you can! You'll learn a lot of basic skills, become comfortable with patients and get to watch nurses do their work in person.

I world also add, don’t be afraid to be wrong about something. These are opportunities to learn. Yes raise your hand even if you’re not sure if you’re right and yes absolutely volunteer to do things within your limitations as a student in clinicals and absolutely make yourself known to your professors and teachers early on, thank them, ask them questions and talk with them. Another things that helped me during my first clinical was self deprecating humour. My clients were mostly out at their ease by this. If you do all this stuff and others end up giving a hard time because of this, that’s a then problem not a you problem. And it may help to deliberately shield yourself from hearing about other people’s results in their schooling too just to keep your focus on you and your grades. No sense comparing yourself to others if your processes and practices are different. You’re in this program for you and your career not for anyone else.

Thanks for this video! It gave me a lot of new perspectives. I wasnt aware being a patient that a new nurse may not have put in an IV before. I had a new nurse blow my vein and accidentally stuck a swob stick up my urethra trying to get an amniotic fluid sample🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ needless to say I was mad at her. Now I feel bad about😩🤦🏽‍♀️
