@@joshandcasey The man who opens the door at the airport for Nando and his family IS the real Nando. The doctor behind Roberto during the hospital scene is the real Roberto, the real Carlitos plays his father saying the names of the survivors (including his). And there are also some other survivors in different scenes, such as Moncho Sabella (during the scene where Liliana and Javier are saying goodbye to their children), Coche Inciarte (during the bar scene) and Daniel F. Strauch is spotted front row during the church scene. Also some survivor family members might appear in different scenes. Some survivor cameos were left out from the movie, including the ones of Tintin and Zerbino.
      Great video!

29:09 - because Nando Parrado is basically the epitome of a Big Damn Hero, he was constantly looking back while they were walking, making sure he remembered where they came from and what the mountains looked like. After he and Roberto were found and he pointed out the spot on a map the rescue pilots were like, nope, that's not possible, you haven't walked all that way. That's why he went on the helicopter to guide them - and obviously, the plane was exactly where he said it'd be.
These men are all incredible. I grew up on Alive (which is the Americanised version of this movie from 1993 and also the title of the first book about the events), and I'm so glad this movie finally told the story the way it deserved to be told.

The way he tells it in interviews, he didn't volunteer and it wasn't a choice, they just put him in the helicopter. The pilot was also concerned about flying above the altitude the helicopter was designed for and wanted to turn back, but he convinced him to keep going.

Some facts that wasn’t included or changed in the film:
    - Numa didn’t hurt his leg that way, one of the survivors said in his book that at night someone stepped on his foot and hurt his leg which lead to him getting infected (they don’t know who stepped on him because it was so dark).
    - Carlitos said that the reason they survived was because they worked together and trusted each other, he also said no one complained during the time they were at the mountains. No one was allowed to complain because technically they were all in the same position.
    - They pranked each other quite a lot during their time at the mountains, Fito made some of the survivors believe that another avalanche was coming a few days before their rescue. Some joked about their situation and the meat especially Carlitos.
    - Carlitos also said that although no one fought during their time in the mountains, there was some tension between a few of them because some would be just doing nothing to help and the others had to do most of work around.
    - They weren’t rescued on the same day, some were rescued first and the rest were rescued the next day because the helicopter couldn’t hold that much weight.
edit: what kept the real numa alive was that he really wanted to help, so when the others told him that he couldn’t help anymore he became depressed and due to infection also stopped eating because he had no appetite. he then died weighing 25 kg (55 pounds).

About cooking the meat: the fires they tried to light didn’t last long and even tho they did cook the first meat they ate, they noticed that 1) the meat shrinks when u cook it which means less quantity and 2) fats are cooked as well, and u need as much of anything when living in those conditions. So they decided ti eat it raw as to preserve as much fats and also have more “quantity” of it so to speak

“Fun” fact - nearly all of the survivors were regularly taking flights right after this (I think Bobby Francois was one of the only ones who refused to do it). In fact, Nando and Roberto went to the US by plane just a year after to promote a book about this story and Roberto writes in his own biography that during these flights Nando would constantly poke at him and ask if they should “get ready, just in case” 👀 the balls on those guys…

I've read and watched some accounts by the survivors, and the answer to them not lighting a fire is that; they did, a few times! They even tried cooking the meat once. But there wasn't a lot of materials they could use to make a fire as most of them were very wet and their fires never burned for long because of the brutal weather.
Also, they had so many cigarettes because two of the survivors worked in the tobacco industry and as there was a tobacco shortage in Chile at the time and most of them were heavy smokers, they brought a looooot of cigarettes for the trip hahaha

Of the survivors there are only 14 left of the 16. Two have passed, they are Javier Methol (the older gentleman whose wife died in the avalanche) passed in 2015, and Coche Inciarte (one of the rugby players who passed 2022).
You asked where some of them are today:
Nando Parrado (the man whose mother and sister died and one of the ones who walked out and who wrote "Miracle of the Andes") is an entrepreneur who runs several businesses and who is a motivational speaker.
Roberto Canessa (the other who walked out with Nando and was the 2nd year med student) is now a world renown pediatric cardiologist who operates on fetuses in-utero. He has also written a book titled, "I Had to Survive."
Eduardo Strauch (one of the men who cut the meat) is now a painter and motivational speaker. He also is the guide in a yearly trek that adventurers make up to the crash site. He says he still hears his brothers speaking to him from up on the mountain.
Many of the others became successful businessmen and others returns to the rugby club including Gustavo Zerbino (the other med student who helped Roberto).
A word about the cigarettes. Coche Inciarte was the one who packed them. He was taking them to Chile for his friends who wanted them as Chile puts a stop to the amount you can have. He was as he stated, "Being selfless."
Javier Methol went on to marry again, and have four more children. He never forgot his love for his Liliana. When he died his ashes were split and half were buried in a cemetery in Montevideo. The other half were taken back up to the mountain and scattered over the crash site. The same with Coche.
As for the smoking, a lot of the guys who did smoke said it stemmed their appetite so they weren't as hungry.
There are three of the survivors in the film. The first is Nando Parrado who holds the door open for his movie counterpart at the airport. The next is Carlitos Paez who plays his own father who searched for his son. Carlitos is the one who reads off the names of the survivors. The last is Roberto Canessa who can be seen in the white medical coat helping his film counterpart walk into the hospital.
Enzo Vogorincic who plays Numa Turcatti the narrator, was allowed access to the real Numa's home. Enzo was able to see Numa's bedroom and touch some of his belongings as he prepared for the role. The other actors were also granted special access to their counterpart's lives and homes.
Filming locations were in the Sierra Sierra Nevada, Granada, Andalucía, Spain. JA Bayona did go up to the Valley of Tears where the crash site is and filmed various things to be used as backdrops for the film. The sound engineer also recorded the wind and some of the sounds from the valley. Many of the actors also went up to the real crash site.

"Couldn't they have put on more layers?" They crashed late into the day on the 13th. They didn't have long to do much of anything before the sun set behind the mountains and the temperature plummeted. Only a few boys thought to grab some extra layers, but even that barely provided much protection in the subzero temps. There were some who weren't thinking straight right afterward and were in shock. They really didn't know what to do with themselves or how to process their situation. A few just sat dumbfounded on the snow with cigarettes and booze. Those who had more leadership qualities and/or had their wits about them (like Roberto, Zerbino, Marcelo, etc) were too busy helping the injured or were injured themselves. Trying to help people took priority over everything else and the leaders were putting those able to work to assist in the effort. So they had less than an hour before the light went out, the temps dropped, and everyone ran back into the fuselage. Most of the suitcases were used to hold back the wind, weighed down by the contents inside (although, not shown in the movie, the wind still regularly blew down their barricade, so they often had to rebuild it several times every night).
While there were some suitcases in the plane with them that first night, which they could have searched through, every time someone moved it bumped into someone else. The fuselage was crammed full of the bodies of the living and the dead, as well as broken seats and debris. Each time someone moved even just to scratch an itch or cough, that created a ripple effect and the injured had their wounds bumped. There was a lot of screaming and cursing that first night whenever someone moved.
They did put on more layers the 2nd day, but most of their clothes were meant for warm weather in Chile. They also had to use a lot of clothes as bandages and such. They were also splitting clothes from carry-on luggage bags between 27 people. And that was only a small amount. Several bags were sucked out during the crash. A lot of the luggage was in the back of the plane. When the boys found the tail they were able to bring back more clothes for everyone.

I just realized, watching this reaction now after watching this movie once myself prior, that the song playing over the film where they are all at the airport foreshadows Numa’s death later on in the film. In the airport scene the song says “we want u to dance” playing over a scene of Numa walking through the airport. And before Numa dies he says he wishes he can dance again before his inevitable death he knew was coming and that he was beginning to sadly accept by that point :( this movie man, incredible. The song itself too is almost as if the actors themselves, Bayona the director, the survivors, etc are saying we wish u could be dancing along side us today. We want u to dance. We so badly wanted u to live. But now we will dance for u and live in ur memory. Incredible.

    A few things:
Not all actors were Uruguayan, most of them are from Argentina, but none of them were recognized actors or had experience making movies. One of the actor was a former rugby player from Uruguay. They did a great job in adapting the rioplatense accent.
The guy that you identified at the beginning of the movie (airport scene) as one of the survivors was Nando Parrado, the one who did the last expedition with Roberto Canessa. In the movie, he is opening the door to his own family.
The guy that reads the names is not Bobby Francois (that’s the one you mentioned you thought it was). The guy that reads the names is Carlitos Miguel Páez, and he is playing his own father (Carlos Páez Vilaró) who in the real events read the names, hence the “Carlitos Miguel Páez, mi hijo” in the movie. He read his own son name that way.
Roberto Canessa (the other one who did the 10 days expedition with Parrado), also has a cameo. He is the one dressed as a doctor behind the actor that plays Canessa. Canessa almost died in that last expedition. He caught dysentery, that’s why he couldn’t get in the helicopter.
There were three medicine students that survive the crash. Canessa, 19 years old, second year of school; Zervino (he is the one that collects the letters and belonging from the deceased), 19 years old, first year of school; and Maspons (he is one of the three that spent a night outside - Zervino and Numa were the other two) who died in the avalanche.
The fire aspect was already covered in another comment, but I also need to add that they didn’t have that much to burn. They had nothing and in their mind, anything they burned could be useful in the next days, they just didn’t know how, so they were trying to keep everything. For instance, they used the cover of the seats as blankets, they used the cushion of the seats to protect their feet during the expeditions, you saw how they built the beds (hammocks) and how they created the sunglasses.
The movie was mainly filmed in Sierra Nevada, Spain. They only went to the place of the accident to take some footage to digitally change Sierra Nevada mountains with the Andes mountains. Only the actors that played Canessa and Parrado filmed a short scene there.
Pretty much none of the survivors suffered PTSD. They openly said that they don’t suffer from nightmares. They returned to Uruguay on a plane, two or three days after the rescue and they’ve been flying the world since then. One of them, Eduardo Strauch, says that he has always loved airplanes.
I agree this is the best movie of the year and it should be the best movie of the decade, too bad it did not get as many Oscars nominations as it deserves, but I think American people prefer war/Nazi stories than this kind of story. Did you see what I did there ?😉
On that same line I have to say, I liked your reaction but, there were too many analogies in your comment that it really did not contribute too much to what I expect on a reaction. You either talked too much or did not show your reaction on key scenes where the conversation between characters was very deep and beautiful. I would’ve loved to see some reactions on that (eg. Methol telling Numa he felt so much love when he hugged his wife and that he knew at the moment what his purpose of life was - this conversation comes from Methol’s own contribution to the book “La Sociedad de la Nieve” or when Arturo Nogueira is having that conversation with Numa about God, which in reality happened with Nando and Arturo was actually saying that he believed in God more than ever). Just some food for thought. I don’t get tired of watching this movie, it is sad but uplifting at the same time. It makes you appreciate all you have and force you to try to be a better person.

Maspons did go on that expedition with Numa and Zerbino. However he isn't the third Medical Student amongst the initial survivors (besides Cannesa and Zerbino)...that was actually Diego Storm and he was the one who felt responsible to keep Parrado alive during his coma. If he hadn't moved him further inside the fuselage and kept him warm at night through proximity/body heat, (while his brain injury/swelling healed) he would have died from cold.

yeah, those aren't product placements. the coke crates were actually the one things they did burn at first until they were gone and then the adidas bags were actually in the real pictures that they're recreating. this isn't a movie with sponsors. ja bayona had to fight for over a decade to get the movie they wanted to make (in spanish) made and netflix finally let him do it but they clearly didn't expect it to be as good as it is because they put all their money and oscar pushing towards maestro instead. if it was an english speaking movie, they probably would have had more faith and would have pushed it more because this has best picture written all over it and the snubs are insane. i'm glad they got two noms but god the score and sound editing and acting snubs are painful.
i clearly hold no grudges lmao

The actors were Argentinian and Uruguayan, but it's a Spanish (Spain) production. There was a crappy Hollywood version starring Ethan Hawke on 1993.
The choice of Numa being narrator is to highlight the "society", all of the ones who never left the mountain too.
They were stacked with cigarettes because brands are hard to find country to country, particularly during that period.
Today, no one would've survived the crash, October down here is spring, and due to global warming, there's no snow at that location in spring. Impact would've been fatal.
We're here for commentary, it's ok if you talk.

America did a movie about this tragedy and it’s called Alive. It’s an adaptation of a book a british writer wrote about this. Horrible. They changed some names, changed things that happened. Survivor didn’t like it and the families of those who died either.
Society of the snow is an adaptation of the book (same name) and it was written by an uruguayan writer who was childhood friends with the survivors and it’s the story told by them. Better book and better movie for sure

One last thing, I always found it interesting that the survivors still believed in god after this entire incident because if you think about it some people or at least most Americans would have become atheists after something like this, but I watched an interview a few days ago where Gustavo Zerbino said that even though they were in a horrific situation, their faith is what gave them motivation to live. I never thought of it that way until he said it, which is crazy because I am Latina and an ex catholic, I totally forgot that suicide is considered a sin in the religion and if they gave up without fighting for survival that would have be a no.

26:46 The oldest of the survivors was Javier Methol (1935-2015), who turned 37 on the same day that Numa died, December 11, 1972. The next oldest is Daniel Fernández Strauch, who was 26 at the time.
On the other hand, they were carrying many cartons of cigarettes because they knew that at that time there was a great shortage of tobacco in Chile, and two of the passengers were linked to the main tobacco company in the country, "Abal Hnos". Pancho Abal, one of those killed in the crash, was the son of one of the owners of that big company.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet or if you guys talked about it at some point, but the plane was actually located at almost 12k feet above sea level, because of this it is kind of difficult to light a fire due to oxygen levels, actually the scene after the avalanche they did not light up a lighter and they spent those days in complete darkness to avoid the fire consuming the oxygen so they can breathe themselves. A lot of the things they had were wet due to the snow too, that's why they couldn't really do a campfire. Hope this helps!

I was born in Uruguay where I live. I was at high school when this happened and I remember it vividly. The casting took about 8 months and the Argentinian actors had to adapt their speech to our Uruguayan accent which are slightly different from each other, but very distinctive from other accents.
There are many, many, countless reactions and reviews on the net about this movie. It's so shocking.
But the point I want to make is that most of them refer to the strength of love, religion, and friendship.
However, I see something different here. Hollywood mostly portraits two sides of the story - the good and the bad, the white and the black, the hero and the villain. This picture aims, as I see it, at showing that choral movies are possible. There’s leadership of course, but it shifts from one character to another according to the situation. That shows that a society can be horizontal and that leadership can be shared according to the necessity of the conditions and the capacity of the actors.
The fact that Numa was chosen to be the narrator is absolutely genius. He acts as a bridge between the ones who survived and those who passed.
Some people, for instance, Susana, Nando’s sister, had internal injuries but also got frost bite.
Pay attention to the music - it builds up the mood and the feelings of the viewers. Besides, the make-up was unbelievable. The movie was shot chronologically, meaning, once they started it went on along the story. The actors first had to put on some weight, and then, loose it, of course under the care of nutritionists. Some of them got to lose 60 pounds.
The reason why they had so many cigarettes on board is very simple. The effects of smoking were not known at the time so if you wanted to be ‘in’ you had to smoke. Besides, Francisco (Pancho) Abal was the son of the owner of the cigarette factory and Methol used to work there. So they took lots and lots of cigarettes to resell in Chile, right before the coup against President Allende, in Chile since there was a great shortage of them.
I’m stopping here because I can go on and on for ever. Just watch it and see it for yourself. You *WON’T* be disappointed.

Three of the survivors made cameos in the movie:
    - Fernando "Nando" Parrado: opens the airport door to his character at the beginning of the movie.
    - Roberto Canessa: Plays a doctor when they are received at the hospital because he is a doctor in the real life.
    - Carlos Paez Rodríguez: Represents his own father (Carlos Paez Vilaró) when he reads the list of survivors reading the name of his own son (“Carlitos Miguel Paez, my son”).
And they were there for 72 days. On the first day of rescue, they took some of them and a group of rescuers stayed who set up a tent a little away because of the smell. The next day they rescued the others.
    - The house where Numa arrives is the real Numa's house and the walker is a Numa's nephew.

Survivorman had an early episode about surviving a plane crash in winter, although his scenario was below the tree line so he had access to food and fuel. Defs worth a watch if you're interested (th-cam.com/video/4ntDFfgxKz4/w-d-xo.html) Some key points that I was reminded of in this movie is that A) Eating snow can hydrate you a little, but your body expends extra calories to warm it up which is extremely dangerous when you're already starving, and B) Working up a sweat in the cold is also really dangerous because your clothes will get wet and then your likelihood of freezing is even higher. I'm fairly certain that the reason most are Argentenian actors because there is a movie industry there, but not so much in Uruguay. Uruguyan actors/resses tend to participate in the industry there in Argentina.
Also, this isn't a hollywood movie; it is a Spanish movie.

Fun facts said by Carlitos, Bobby was that one member who had no hopes and didn’t participate willingly, they made him. They all had a pact that if they were pessimistic or didn’t do anything you didn’t get food.
The nonconducting sleeping bag was made by Carlitos. He gives it a human value (said in an interview), he is still proud of it because he was a spoiled kid before the accident and during these days he learned to sew.
Nando gave Carlitos one baby l shoe he had for his nephew, Nando said this was a promise that he would go back for it to give it to his nephew. In the movie alive or in this one they gave the shoe to another member not Carlitos, because other members needed attention too lol said by carlitos. carlitos got many things so that's why.
he was the youngest and made his goal to be the funny guy to keep the mood up.
I don’t know if the interview I’m talking about has subtitles but it was such amazing.
They also have a pact that no one can’t talk about who the first body they ate was. They all know but they can’t tell. Said in the interview too.
Coco’s mom was asked about the survivors eating her son, she said she understood and that she was okay with it because they all had a piece of her son
    Javier methol was the oldest.
Coche passed away last year from cancer and was the first one to watch the movie because Bayona wanted him to watch it before it was too late.

I know that y’all speak Spanish, but many of your followers do not, and you don’t have English subtitles on. Unfortunately, auto-generated subtitles only catch your speech, and not the move. I was able to follow along because I have seen the movie like 6 times already, but it made your video very difficult to follow for an American audience.

Great reaction! Thanks for pointing it out how strong religions are in South America, catholic religion to be more specific. Some reactors don't understand why some survivors didn't eat at first, but they don't know how it works here. Like y'all said, if it were americans, things would be different, they would propably fight more, eat it in the first hours lol, but the sense of comunnity and brotherhood is another strong thing in South America.
