  • Can the 2012 Mac mini still do 1080p video editing in 2020? In this video we show you the capabilities of a 2012 Mac mini that has an i5 cpu, 8 GB ram, and a slower SSD drive with 1080p video editing.
    As more and more people look to create a TH-cam channel they need a good system for creating videos. The question we answer in this video will be if the 2012 Mac mini is good enough to create 1080p TH-cam videos and will the experience of creating them be good or bad.
    Please watch this video to find out how good the 2012 Mac minis are at video creating in 2020. We will create a quick 1080p video and then show the render times for rendering the video we create. It will be a real-world example on the video editing performance of this older Mac mini and if it could be a good choice in 2020.
    Thanks for watching our videos covering older Apple products.

    For the love of God, finally someone that shows normal iMovie performance for the everyday home video editing. Not everyone is a full time TH-camr. Thank you!

    I've been editing video on my mid-2011 Macbook Pro 13" using Final Cut Pro X very quickly. The key is to choose ProRes LT for your render files in the project settings. LT are smaller files that these older systems can playback VERY smoothly. The i7 quad-core would be a HUGE upgrade for me!

    The 2012 i5 is a dual core, the 2012 i7 is quad core, I used both in the past for editing. The i7 was much better/faster for editing; however, both were hampered by a lack of dedicated GPU. I sold both sometime ago due to age, but I would agree, it can do editing for TH-cam videos. I'd like to see Apple bring out a new Mac Mini w/ARM and with a dedicated GPU in the future. Excellent video.

      Thanks Eduardo. Yes, the 2012 Mac Minis are getting up there but can still do basic editing. We will see how the ARM transition affects the older software and other things. It may be faster but will be interesting moving forward for sure.

    I just ran into your video and I gave some confidence on me purchasing this to just do some video editing on it. The person is selling me the one you recommend which is the i7 with 16gb RAM and also SSD plus he is throwing in the 1TB Hard drive that it came with along with some peripherals for $425. I hope its a good buy...lol

      Not a bad deal and I hope it works out good for you. It will have not issues with 1080P editing if you are using iMovie or FCP and even a little lite 4K editing should work. Thanks Jessee.

    I’m still editing with premiere on my 2012 Mac mini with Mojave installed. It is an i7 16 GB Ram with fusion drive. The fan runs a lot more after I updated and it’s slower now - I pretty much have to close most programs while I’m editing - suppose I could create proxies even for the 1080p files...don’t think this thing is going to hold up too much longer but it’s impressive how well this has done over the years.

      Thanks for sharing Josh. I agree if you are looking for basic editing this can do it. For more advanced stuff this is getting up there and now with no Big Sur OS it might be a good idea to look at a more advanced system. But, if all you need is basic editing, email, and browser surfing these are still very quick with an SSD installed.

    Local guy has the same model for $125 including corded keyboard and mouse. Another has an old Apple 23" Cinema Display for $80 OBO. I think I may actually have another Sandy Bridge i7 2600s CPU laying around here somewhere as well. My audio PC is has an i7, but it's dedicated graphics are sloooooow.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can. It will be slower than the newer macs but still works quite well. Keep in mind that if you go with the i7 model and like 16 GB ram it is a very powerful system. The issue will be upgrading the OS in a year when this model is officially removed from the OS upgrade list. It will still work but you won't be able to get the new OS each year.

    Just as a test I used my 2012 i5 Mac Mini with 16GB ram and a 512 ADATA SU750 SSD to edit a 4K video in iMovie. I'm using Catalina. I think the 4K is just 30FPS but the Mac Mini did great. I did this after the Mac Mini blazed thru 1080p a 60FPS. With the 4K it rendered the 5 minute video in 12 minutes. I was really pleasantly surprised. The CPU fan went from 1800 to only 1970 RPM. Craig I'm really liking your videos. I try to do for car maintenance what you are doing for computers. Check me out.

    Hi there Craig, I am considering to get a Mac Mini 2012 version. I was wondering what version would you recommend for me. My usage would be some iTunes (since I'll be adding songs from CD's onto my library) , it'll almost be primarily be used for iMovie since I want a video editing software and I think iMovie will suffice for me being a beginner, and then lastly it would be some type of photoshop/it's equivalent when I am trying to fabricate CD art covers for albums that didn't have a physical CD release.
    With this being the primary usages of the Mac, would it be better for me to get a i5 or i7 version and with what additional specs as well and if should try to get one that is quadcore too?

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it really depends on budget. If you can get a new M1 Mac mini for $659 or a referb at Apple store for $599 that is what I recommend since you then have many years of OS updates. If you are trying to get one for the $200s then maybe the i5 2012 but make sure it comes with an SSD and 8 to 16 GB ram and you should be fine for basic stuff.

      @Pedro Alves Thanks for the reply, I'm just not a big fan of patching unsupported systems because it can be a bit clunky installing additional security updates, plus I want a more powerful machine as well.

      For the cost yes but it will need an SSD and 8 to 16 GB Ram. Just note that they are getting older so you won't be able to update the OS to the newest version soon. But for the money they work great and as long as your software works on Catalina or Big Sur it should last a few years for you.

      Sorry but I don't use that but I can tell you most likely not great. The 2012 can run iMovie or FCP very good due to optimization but older Macs struggled with Premiere since it wasn't optimized back then. Now new macs can run Adobe great but back then not the best.

    Do you have any suggestions for good video editing software for a 2012 mini with 2.6ghz i7 and 16gb of ram, running Catalina? I just tried to use Premier Elements, because I was used to running it on my PC (which is also a 2012 computer, and can still render 1080(i) videos). But it crashed, and became unresponsive a few times. I wasn't doing anything fancy (just making a dummy video that only consisted of a couple of clips and nothing else), but I couldn't even get it to finish the rendering.
    Adobe lists a 6th generation Intel i processor in its system requirements, but it also lists that for Photoshop Elements, and that works very well on my mini.
    I may just go with iMovie, but am wondering if that might be lacking in features. Thanks for making this video!

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, on older Macs using Apple software really helps since it's so optimized. I would go with iMovie or FCP. I use iMovie and it may seem basic but with some practice it can do everything the others can. I did a few videos on using iMovie so check those out. For a software other than these I know that DaVinci Resolve software also works good on a Mac. Adobe wasn't optimized on the older MACs with no Metal chip but these others should work better for you.

    • @JeffMillerOnline
      @JeffMillerOnline 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@craigneidel thanks for the quick reply. I'm guessing I will default to iMovie, but I am intrigued by DaVinci Resolve. I fear that Resolve may be too powerful for the 2012 Mini, but I may just download it and see what happens.
