Just bought a used Mac Mini with the i5 a couple days ago to replace my completely maxed out 2010 Mac Pro. Wanted an i7 mini but the guy selling it had a price too good to pass up and it came with external eGPU with an RX 580 in it. Was a bit nervous I was going to watch this video and regret not holding out to buy an i7 haha. Looks like I made the right choice and saved some serious $$$. While I loved my old Mac Pro and could still edit 4K on it and did all the upgrades for airdrop, 128gb ram, SSD, RX 580, the dual 6 core Xeons became quite the bottleneck on a lot of things. My new Mac mini flies through exports in comparison. However when I’m exporting on the mini I noticed some sluggishness trying to browse the web at the same time. Something my old Mac Pro didn’t do. I’m guessing export on my old Mac didn’t use all the CPUs which left them free to be used for other tasks and my Mac mini has less cores that ALL get used when exporting.
It’s a more efficient CPU than the old 12 core? Interesting 🤔 since I hardly see the 2010 Mac Pro we have lying around get more than 70% CPU usage. Even that is rare. (:
ricky v yeah each core on the mini is noticeably more powerful/efficient. I’ve found most programs on Mac OS aren’t optimized to use more than 6-8 cores. So that 12 core on the old Mac Pro essentially just leaves unused cores open for multitasking which is handy, but I prefer fewer WAY faster CPU’s. Biggest downsides now are lack of expandable internal storage and not enough ports to connect accessories. My Mac Mini looks like a spaghetti monster is escaping out the back hahaha.

So to conclude the i7 isn't really worth it at all :O! I was also considering between both i5/i7 because i7 was said to be better for rendering. Unless you're a pro who renders over 6k footage, even then the i7 only seem to perform
That's what I'd buy...you just added another year performance functionality to your mini for a few dollars vs. the high cost of replacing the i5 sooner.

I’m really thinking about buying one but I’m worried about the temperature. Would be amazing to have a definitive answer about this. Thanks!

Thanks for the review. I came here just out of curiosity as I’ve not seen the Mac Mini & have only used the Apple tablets & phones. Your video was full of information.
I got the i5 since I needed to buy from third party and it was marked down $175 on Amazon, new. Not going to complain. Glad you have the i7 for the channel and that we got this incredible comparison out of it!
I disagree. While the i7's benchmarks don't look impressive compared to the i5, those extra seconds and minutes add up throughout the day, week, month....
I use a Razer Core X with a modest RX580. It saves about 30% of rendering/ exporting time (using FCP), which adds up really quick! I have the 2018 i7 Mac Mini, but it's still very worth getting an eGPU for me. However, I really do agree that for most video editors, the i7 is a must as a starting point :).
Yeah, it looks like they got the 8 GB model (2x 4 GB) and replaced one of the sticks with a 32 GB stick, which drops the RAM down to single-channel and cuts the memory bandwidth in half.
Love the videos with the mac mini... with an available gpu, its (next to the mac pro) the most versatile mac that can go from light duty inexpensive to a beast of machine with a 6 core i7, 32gb (or more) 1tb of storage, egpu, and any 4k/5k monitor. I personally love 2 x 24" UHD (2 x 27 is too much). Keep it up
Many thanks for the comparison. I've been looking at the MacMini simply for still photography editing. Looks like the i5 would do. So what is the minimum RAM you would recommend. You can self-upgrade RAM in the 2020 MacMini?
Great help. I've upgraded my 2008 MacBook Pro 2.26ghz Core 2 to a 1 TB SDD, 8GB ram and processing iMovie is painstakingly slow. I use it pretty much as a Mac mini, with external monitor, mouse and keyboard. It's great except for exporting video. The mac mini I7 may be a good performance alternate to getting another Mac Book pro, especially on the price performance.
Just bought a Mac mini i7. I have had zero Bluetooth issues. WiFi works great as well. I was honestly worried about it having issues myself, but I've had a over all great experience so far.
Thing is that not everyone has that problem. And now one can tell, how big the percentage of all sold mac minis is that have that bluetooth/wifi/usb problem.
It usually happens when the 2 USB-A ports are occupied on the far left of the Unit and also more frequently when you're running something intensive that occupies the majority of the system's threads and ram. It's such a major headache especially if you need to work with Zoom daily with headphones.
It’s really good and fast. 16gb of ram would have been fine but it’s great to have 32gb so my virtual machines are faster. I also installed windows 10 on it. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Mac Mini.

I have an i7 Mac mini and bought a eGPU enclosure, I sold it because i did not use it a lot. I bought a 5K iMac with 8GB Radeon 580 and now use this one for time-to-time video editing. The Radeon VII, which is unbelievable powerful, that was in the eGPU is now in my gaming PC. The mini is now just another pc in my house, my gf uses it as daily office machine and doesn’t need an eGPU... maybe my story is helpful for some of you, take your time and make your choice on your own.
I was hoping that the Mac Mini would be more than it was for the 2018 model but I still like it. I was looking to replace my iMac 5K and wanted to use my own displays. I would have preferred a larger enclosure to accommodate better heat evacuation and an upgradable internal storage option, preferably a couple NVME slots. 4 desktop style RAM slots would have also been great. They probably could have accomplished this in the same enclosure with an HC-NUC style external power supply, freeing up room for better cooling and RAM and SSD slots. That said, I was using my 2018 i7 Mini with 3 32" monitors quite successfully and then added a 4th by use of a Sonnet Breakaway Puck. The Mini can still be used as a hotplate however, it is great for cooking pancakes. They all seem to have a Apple design on them, a nice touch.
From a corporate background in the technical sector (going back to when main frames, yes main frames, were pedal powered!) you have exceptional presentation skills delivering vital, useful information in an excellent format. Kept my interest for the entire 9 minutes, when I would have to super glue my eyelids open during many of those corporate "deliveries." Oh, video format...also excellent. Coming from Mac Pros, I have no idea (nor does my partner) why I was even considering these little guys. Increase the height by .5 to 1-inch, bump up the cooling, upgrade the GPU (substantially!) Apple, and we'd have a use.
It comes with 2x 4GB sticks of RAM, and they replaced one with a 32GB stick to get 36GB??? Coffee Lake is supposed to have paired RAM running in dual-channel at 40 Gbps bandwidth, but when you do this your RAM bandwidth is cut to 20 Gbps. Who knows if this is how the 6-core machine was setup, and who knows how much it impacts performance.
@@sasha_kahlo Any paired upgrade would've been better. It might have run faster if he didn't upgrade the RAM at all. They said it never used more than 8-10 GB during exports in a comment below.
It's funny because there's no possible excuse for not knowing this. Intel has been using dual-channel RAM since 2002 when they abandoned RAMBUS. It's not the stupidest thing I've ever seen, but it's certainly going to keep me from ever taking this channel seriously.
Not really a great side by side comparison if you're going to compare using an eGPU, which pretty much does all the heavy lifting on your video comparisons. I had the i5 version, it was good... but then I switched to i7 and it felt like it responded so much better on pretty much everything, without any eGPUs, that's just makes sense if using video editing or applications like Blender. I ended up customizing mine a bit recently adding it to a custom case, with Noctua fans keeping everything cooler and 2 eGPUs along a few other things. Performs much better now.
Great question! What did you ultimately choose for yourself and work with music? I think i7 would be more correct - because DAW manufacturers write, Minimum .... But i7 - i9 is preferred! So it plays a big role for Music software / DAW ..
Simple answer, i7 has hyperthreading the i5 does not so for multithreaded workloads you're getting 6 extra threads. The i7 also has a 500Mhz higher boost clock so for single threaded workloads things will be a far bit snappier and if thermals allow multithreaded workloads will be better. Depends on the use case but for an extra £200, I'd just get the i7.
The 2018 Mac Mini was designed for 65W CPUs, and the i7 model is supposed to be 65W but actually has a TDP of 100W, so the i7 overheats and throttles down after about 10 seconds of running a CPU-limited multithreaded app.
The ram configurations for both machines were not optimal. Since you were not using matched sticks you were not using your ram in dual mode. That might have impacted your results.
Getting a Mac mini i7, 32GB RAM. Don’t like using my lower budget MacBook Pro for rendering or even a simple leisurely time with Sims 4. Heats up like a rocket. Not good for a little 13” laptop.
So, while this is informative, it’s a little bit conceptually flawed. The i5 and the i7 are vastly different in that the i7 has hyper-threading active. This is going to be huge for processing-intense work. BUT, Final Cut Pro X relies primarily on the graphics card which are the same in both models. Using an eGPU or upgrading the graphics card would show better results. The slide edge of the i7 in these tests is likely due to the slide edge of hyper-threading. Thanks for the video!
Hi, I have a 2019 basemodel Macbook Pro with 8GB Ram only. I plan to edit videos from DJI Mavic Air2s, if I purchase an eGPU like what you did here, will that be enough to process and apply color corrections? I want to know if there's no need for me to upgrade to the M1 Mac Mini.
Hmm. Your tests show a almost a 20% performance increase in the Sony 4k H264 to H264 conversion of a 9min video. A lot of any gain related to the source>result task. the I-7 didn't perform any better in some use cases, but when it did it gave a 15% to almost 20% boost. Not a big deal if you are working with a few encodes a week. But substantial amount of time if you are doing a few encodes every day for longer video's.
I asked one of your Mac TH-cam compatriots about h.265 encoding (I don't think he ever got back to me... if he did I didn't catch the notification). Specifically, I wanted to know if using an i7 would make a difference in h.265 encoding given the fact that h.265 encoding is done on the T2 chip rather than on the main CPU. If everything happens on the T2 then I would just get an i5 (or... GASP... an i3) rather than an i7. Do you have any thoughts on that?
I did do a few h.265 tests, and performance was pretty much identical. I didn't include the tests because h.265 has yet to be widely adopted as a standard.
@@MilesSomerville Thanks for getting back to me. So it seems that the T2 really does do the heavy lifting and if you are most interested in HEVC encoding that the extra $200 might be better spent elsewhere in your setup. Would you say that is a correct assessment of the situation? If so then good to know. Thanks again!

Great video.
thanks for the video, really helpful in me looking for a new machine
I am waiting for Mac Mini Pro with GPU.
Really good light in your videos!
Interesting and well explained !
GREAT VIDEO !
This is helpful. Thanks!
I’m looking to upgrade my ram. Is 64gb overkill? Should I just go for the 32gb upgrade
From a corporate background in the technical sector (going back to when main frames, yes main frames, were pedal powered!) you have exceptional presentation skills delivering vital, useful information in an excellent format. Kept my interest for the entire 9 minutes, when I would have to super glue my eyelids open during many of those corporate "deliveries."
Oh, video format...also excellent.
Looks like the i5 was similarly unmatched with 20GB total; 16Gb + 4GB. This is a terrible practice folks… match your RAM pairs!
It's funny because there's no possible excuse for not knowing this. Intel has been using dual-channel RAM since 2002 when they abandoned RAMBUS. It's not the stupidest thing I've ever seen, but it's certainly going to keep me from ever taking this channel seriously.
For the love of all that is good thank you 🙏.
Mac mini 6-core i5 or 6-core i7? Which one would you recommend for music production using software like Pro Tools and Logic Pro X.
Great question! What did you ultimately choose for yourself and work with music? I think i7 would be more correct - because DAW manufacturers write, Minimum .... But i7 - i9 is preferred! So it plays a big role for Music software / DAW ..
Based Mac mini 2018.
Are you planning on buying any cooling? The SPEED design one or that newer one that is much more expensive but quite elegant.
hi dudy, tks for the great video. What about replace a i5 processor for an I9 processor at Mac mini 2018...is that possible?
You have a bright future !!
Hi may i know where did you find a good used mini mac?
Thank you for not talking a load of waffle about the history of computing or the color of the box. Right down to the facts, great!...
I just got myself the Mac Mini 2018 with the i7 Intel chip. Is there a need to add an egpu for video editing?
@9to5Mac can you please review the Mac Mini hub/stand you're using?
Any major differences between the Late 2018 Mini and the 2020 Mini?
Hey miles, wanted to hear what you think about a Mac mini i5, on a benq 270c for photo editing. I would upgrade to 32gb and a 1tb .
Great content! My 16” MBP is basically my “Mac mini” once I upgraded to an UW monitor.
What eGPU enclosure is being used?
I just discovered Opencore a few days ago. Now I want to instal macOS on everything!
What are the hardware monitoring apps you were showing in the toolbar?

The ram configurations for both machines were not optimal. Since you were not using matched sticks you were not using your ram in dual mode. That might have impacted your results.
Getting a Mac mini i7, 32GB RAM. Don’t like using my lower budget MacBook Pro for rendering or even a simple leisurely time with Sims 4. Heats up like a rocket. Not good for a little 13” laptop.
Hi man. What brand of mouse pad?
Satechi
I would return it., the buy it again and wait what WWDC has in store. In the mean time you can look for a buyer.
Handbrake halves the time spent on converting a piece when RAM is doubled in my experience.
Buy Mini late 2012, upgrade to 16gb RAM, SSD 500 disc, and it works with Final Cut Pro and ProTools at the same time;-)
i3 vs i5? is is similar speed for regular day to day tasks such as browsing?
Hi, I have a 2019 basemodel Macbook Pro with 8GB Ram only. I plan to edit videos from DJI Mavic Air2s, if I purchase an eGPU like what you did here, will that be enough to process and apply color corrections? I want to know if there's no need for me to upgrade to the M1 Mac Mini.
FINALLY!!! Haha thank you for making this video!
So for video editing we just need about 16gb max? You mentioned that your RAM use was floating from 6-7gb. So 8gb system may not be optimal yet?
What keyboard are you using with the Mac mini?
What Mac app are you using to get those stats?

I love how I'm seeing this video pop up after 2 years of pondering between apple or pc for graphic design and random gpu dependent things and then going broke and finally mustering up enough cash to conveniently order an i5 2010 mac mini so I can at least have fun in blender lmao I ordered it like two or three days ago I shoulda did research and maybe it would've paid off
