Since you are so astounded and amazed at how well OCLP works, I surely hope you donated a buck or five to the OCLP team.
After all, not only have they produced a product that left you astounded and amazed, and gave new life to an old product, but you are making TH-cam content with it.
But sadly, 99.99% of folks just leave it at “amazed” and never think or care to support the teams that make the product.

Very fair comment, thanks for calling it out.
Now I must say that I’ve tinkered with OCLP a few times over the years, though never remember the releases coming out as fast as they are at the moment, also never seemed quite as easy as it was on this Mac mini before. But from memory, there are no options to donate on their official website, as I recall they only ask for old hardware if you have some hanging around.
I’ve never check for a discord channel etc so I’m relying on what’s on their webpage. Certainly don’t want to be dropping links for ‘buy me a coffee’ to someone who isn’t a legit person behind the scenes. If you are able to point me in the right direction I’d look at it and see if we can support them in any way(s).
Truly grateful for people like those that build stuff like this. Happy to give back and I honestly appreciate the call out on this matter.

First thing first: I totally agree the OCLP team has done a great job on this, donate if you can. I upgraded my iMac 12 (i7 3.xGHz, 256/2T fusion, 16GB memory) from High Sierra to Sonoma just a day or so ago, using release 1.2.1. Process was straight forward (I even used my hard drive instead of USB stick). My take at this point is I think Sonoma takes a lot more graphics power than some of these older systems can handle. For example, the much-raved full motion screen saver and wallpaper simply do not work on my machine. Simple video on TH-cam feels "labored" (fine on High Sierra). I think I am going to fall back to may be Big Sur and see how that goes.

…’donate if you can’t… honestly, who cannot afford $1-$3 (or their local currency equivalent)?. It’s not like the software authors are demanding $500, or a subscription at $50 monthly ….
If every person who actually used OCLP would donate $2, and every person who used it in a commercial money-making income way would subscribe for $3/monthly, the results would be most favorable for the Mac Community.

@techforlife91 OpenCore Legacy Patcher only works enough for a desktop screenshot; the only thing it does, is downgrade system libraries and drivers to shit, turning off system protection measures to achieve so. It is incredibly unstable from my observations. I advise against using your money on this, and instead buying a refurbished supported Mac, or building a hackintosh.

A few weeks ago, a neighbor doing a yard sale gave me a 2010 imac with a bad HDD. I put a 1tb SSD in there and gave the computer to my 7 year old son. He loves it. At first he was using it to play gamecube games. Now he's discovering games I own on steam that have Mac versions and started learning blender

I have a mac mini 2012 i5 16gb ram and ssd like the video. From my experience going through all the available version in oclp , Monterrey is the most equilibrated so far. Fast boot up and performance. Big Sur works pretty well too but too similar with Monterrey that is newer and more secure. I reccomend Monterrey so far

I think for me, even though I/we do use the MacMini a little more after Sonoma than we were before, we are still not working it very hard as there are other computers in the family that do more of the 'daily driver' things. For me, I have not noticed any drawbacks to using Sonoma on this but I appreciate your comments, perhaps I'll try to use it as a 'daily' for a week or so to see if I have a different opinion when it's actually my main device.

@@WhatTheFlash-cx6ox off course. Sonoma its beautiful and works amazing(incredible that a 2012 machine can handle a normal use) , but i noticed it a little bit laggy for example in things that has more gpu usage. I just installed Sonoma on a 2014 mini the other day, it worked great and even though it's a dual core i5 with 8GB of ram and a M.2 SSD I installed in it runs like a champ! The OCLP guys are saviors of Mac's going to landfills in this world. Considering Apple could care less after 5 years if your Mac is in a landfill or not since they'd rather just sell you a new Mac!

    • @WhatTheFlash-cx6ox

Did you get any issues during the install?
I am genuinely surprised how well it runs on mine, even started using it a bit more often than I did before the Sonoma install.
So for me, I used the Mac mini as a host when building my OCLP install disk.
Once in the recovery screen I wiped the existing disk as I didn’t need anything on it, so it was a clean install in my case.
That said I do use a Fusion Drive at the moment, which I don’t rate, but I can’t complain about its performance. The OS is installed by default to the SSD part and like I say, it runs really well for me.
If a clean install and no errors during installation doesn’t improve it, it might be worth trying a different SSD, even just a cheap one to see if that has a positive impact.

I spent two days trying to see the EFI drive option. It turned out that I was using a hub. When I plugged the drive directly into the back of the mac mini (it may be port dependent), it worked like a charm, until . . . . A few days later, I upgraded my Office 365 (web version), sometime shortly thereafter, I got the "grey box" when I wanted to highlight (i.e. click) on something. As one of the features I use the most, if forced by to revert back to OS 10.15. That is a story in itself!

What about updates post-installation? Are those handled like they would be on an official Sonoma installation? Is there any downside to doing this?

    • @WhatTheFlash-cx6ox
      @WhatTheFlash-cx6ox  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Updates are a point to be wary of.
I don’t really think there are downsides, to be fair. But updates can cause issues, there was an issue with 14.1 recently that cause some problems for early adopters.
I think this is one of those small print times where you probably shouldn’t be relying on OCLP on a computer that is your main source of income. So if you were a developer or something that is relying on that computer to help you churn out code in order to earn a paycheque, then you probably shouldn’t be relying on a free piece of software to keep you at the front of the update queue if that makes any sense at all.
For me, I’ve been collecting older bits of Apple tech mostly as it falls out of official support, not yet retro and the prices crash. I was picking them up and throwing Linux on them and then using them as hobby machines or giving them to family members that might just want some web browsing in the kitchen but don’t really want a new iMac or something.
I started experimenting with OCLP around, I don’t know, maybe v0.5.7 or something like that, at the time it felt like it needed videos for hand holding, it felt like there were things people needed to do to make it work well and even then, it could just fall over at any time - at least that’s how I felt about it, but I’m a long time Linux user so maybe I was just flexing on OCLP because the Linux experience on the same hardware was easy and rock solid.
But these later OCLP versions are night and day better than my early experiences. So now I’m trying the latest macOS or within a couple of versions anyway to see how the hardware stands up, if it’s good and the experience isn’t jarring then that’s the OS I leave on that machine, like with this Mac mini, but if it’s a bit naff, like the problems I see on my Mac pro 3,1, then that’s more of a windows or Linux system in my eyes.
If you have a Mac mini at a similar age to the one in this video, you should definitely try OCLP + sonoma. If you don’t like it, nothings broken, you can always go back to what you prefer.

@@markbullen OCLP 1.2.0 fixes the 14.1 screen bug issue by automatically installing KDKs for a new update you're installing which reduces the risk of running into issues. I recommend not installing any macOS update until someone reports an issue and an OCLP update fixes it.
