the extra places are self fulfilling. If you already get 4/5 places then there is a greater likelihood of you getting further into the tournament and so cumulatively have a greater chance of getting another place. League Champions in many leagues have single places, qualifying rounds etc., so limit their chances to get far enough - and of course on their own - to get an extra place for their country
As a Real Madrid fan I'm glad that regardless of where we finish in the league between now and the end of time we'll always qualify for the Champions League.
@@mikem8211 besides the point, but it almost happened in 2000. In fact, Real Madrid finished 5th in La Liga, but also won the Champions League that season, so UEFA literally bent their own rules and Zaragoza in 4th were denied a CL spot for the following season in favour of Real. Now on the off chance it was the other way around (Real finishing 4th but let’s say Mallorca won the CL that season), I’m not entirely convinced UEFA would’ve took the same course of action...

The name of the competition should be changed to the European Premier Cup or some sort of alternative. Champions league should have always just had Champions in it.
Should just do a 64 team comp. 8 groups of 8, with at least one champion from each nation, and more spaces designated to the leagues with the strongest coefficients. Winner of each group automatically into the last 16, 2nd place into the 2nd play-offs and 3rd/4th into initial play-offs. Then you have more games between the big clubs with genuine rewards for finishing as high as possible (meaning less competitive games and tiring season), plenty of knock-out stage football, and also allow atleast 1 champion of every nation in Europe a fair pop at the main European stage. A proper Champions League.
So shall we extend the season then ? How are all these games going to take place along with your domestic league fixtures ? We already have domestic teams setting their stalls out to just qualify as also rans of their domestic league ! Livarpool won this back in 2019 having finished 25pts adrift of man city in their own domestic league to qualify ! How can you now ever be deemed the best in Europe in a comp that now rewards failier ? Whilst I agree with everything they are saying, using Scotland is a bad example. Celtic and Rangers have always had a free route to the Champions League. They pretend to care about all the teams around Europe that might miss out, but what about all those other Scottish teams that never get a shot? The fact is that all the leagues are broken and when money will always be the dominating fixture, it will never recover. You've only gotta look at the range of teams in European Cup history compared to what we get now.
It was much better when only the Champions were in it and the runners up had their battles in the UEFA Cup. Consistently having two teams from the same country in the final is a joke. Especially when the runner up from the league beats the champions
It’s not a competition of “best teams in country”, it’s now “best teams in Europe”… but I think it’s better overall when surprise teams go in & out. Stops big teams getting complacent and “voting” themselves back in - whereas it should remain based on how the 11 players in the pitch perform - not how the board rooms perform…

From 2024 Best 2 performing countries in Europe from the previous season will receive an additional league entry into UCL. Eng & NDL would be the beneficiaries if it started next season. This is much better than their original 10 year historical club co-efficient because it’s somewhat merit based but I still don’t like it 🤷🏾♂️
Have no problem with adding more premier league teams. Best league with the most top clubs. 2nd in a subpar league is a worse team than 5th in England or Spain. Period. I don’t like the new single group and ten random games.
The Conference League is also part of the design to morph football into a European league set up which will basically mean there is a three tier European system. Domestic football will get left behind. Bit by bit the European Super League will appear. If more of the smaller teams fold there will be no pyramid for them to climb anyway. Its been the European league for a while now they have just been afraid to call it that incase people woke up to where it was going so they stuck with the Champions League name.
UEFA and FiFA kicked up such a stink when the super League was proposed because it challenged thier monopoly and threatend their Money! Not sure what the confusion here is.. club coefficient is gone, it has been replaced by national coefficient.. if teams representing your nation start making their way in Europe, you get more representation following year.. what’s wrong with that? Better than proposed … United are 10th in league but get guaranteed spot no matter what idea (you can replace United with any club living on its history)
surely clubs the size of Celtic and Rangers (the inevitable teams that will finish 1st and 2nd) are better off in the top flight of Europe than 5th place in England… the fans and atmosphere isn’t comparable in the slightest. sure they’re not gonna be making the knock out stages consistently but players who come to Ibrox or Park head remember it for the rest of their life, you can’t say the same for a team like Leicester.
I get where you're coming from. However, you can't dismiss Rangers making the knockout stages every season given the correct finances. Celtic have q good track record of qualifying through groups as well.
@@RoobrtLiwanduski I dont disagree with that in terms of the competition being called the champions league but when you only have a ten team league like Scotland if the top two qualify its the same ratio as a twenty team league with the top four qualifying. All of a sudden Perez's plan doesn't seem as bad. Sadly, the people that were strongly against his idea, will not be against UEFA's. This is greed to the fucking core. It was already bad enough having 4 teams from one country qualifying, defending champions qualifying and now this.
Does Trevor not realise that its teams like his beloved Man City & PSG that have caused this. the extra places are self fulfilling.

Europes Elite
the past excitement of European competition is turning into another FA cup
Just keep the current format, it's great
i agree, but prob won't be much different really. Few extra large clubs at the start.
It was much better when only the Champions were in it and the runners up had their battles in the UEFA Cup. Consistently having two teams from the same country in the final is a joke. Especially when the runner up from the league beats the champions
I think it should be higher now, the competition has evolved, especially with Newcastle now. There’s easily gonna be 6 top teams battling
It’s not a competition of “best teams in country”, it’s now “best teams in Europe”… but I think it’s better overall when surprise teams go in & out.
