I have watched hundreds of drumming tutorial videos and not one of them focused on the upward part of the movement. I've been really struggling with my double stroke roll and i suspect it's because the upward movement on my weaker (left) hand isn't coming up as smoothly and easily as my other hand. Left hand pushes the stick down rather than lifting it up as naturally as the right hand. This video is gold and extremely well explained. Thanks Phil. Subscribed. 👍
Thank you! I noticed this too and it’s why I decide to make this video! I hope it helps and thanks for the sub, I’m planning to dive into this idea much further soon!
You really summed it up @3:00 when you say that it happens naturally. You may not have realized it until later, but you were already doing this every time you play a quick fill that requires fast hand speed, you HAVE to lower your stick height, or you will be fighting the laws of physics. It’s also helpful to switch from upper arm and shoulder muscle groups, to lower arm (wrist and fingers) for the faster lower stick height stuff.
Fantastic! I jam and count in flattened oval shapes with the "beginning of the count being at the 12 o clock position(top of the stroke). This concept is great because it improves everything overall and is great for Linear jams too.😎
@philthebeat great lesson . After playing for so many years, I am I going in the right direction with my playing or am I in proving. I think the main thing for me is it is called Plying, not working, so if it feels good, groovy love the theory's. It like what freddt grubber said is the stck soled or does it flow
Ah yes! Absolutely, always telling my students to do this. Takes a while to get used to it and “accept the truth” and be honest with yourself, but totally worth it! 👏🏻 Thanks for watching 😁

I like thar the drums sound like what drums sound like in a room .
I actually forgot to press record, so they were meant to sound more “mixed”! Glad it sounds okay just through my vocal mic! Cheers 👍🏻

Absolutely, and increasing awareness in order to do these things intentionally leads to massive gains! Thanks for commenting 👌🏻
